WATER WAITING—Extra Content from 2026-08-02

The last bag was the one that made Emma question her judgment.

Not because it was heavy, exactly. It was not. It was just awkward, dusty, and full of things that had clearly been sitting in the barn longer than she had been alive. Old cardboard. Brittle scraps of wood. A few pieces of broken plastic. Something that might have once been a feed scoop. She did not study any of it too closely.

She just tied the bag, picked it up, and stood there for a second in the heat.

The barn had no mercy in August. The air inside it felt trapped, thick, and old. Sunlight came through the gaps in the boards, bright enough to make the dust sparkle, but not useful enough to move the air. Emma could feel sweat running down her back and collecting under her hair.

Outside, the trash bin waited.

So did the garden hose.

She carried the bag toward the big barn door, then stopped where the sunlight hit the floor. The right thing to do was take the bag all the way out and finish the job. That was what she had meant to do.

But she had already filled four bags. She had swept. She had dragged old junk out of corners. She had done enough to make the barn feel a little less like a forgotten storage cave and a little more like something that might someday be useful.

The last bag could wait by the door.

Emma set it down and let go of the twisted plastic with a small sigh.

The hose was not far away. She could already imagine the cold water hitting her hands, then her arms, then the back of her neck. She could rinse the dust off before she went in the house. Leave the dirt outside where it belonged.

First, though, she looked down at herself.

Dusty shorts. Dusty legs. Dusty boots.

She would strip down to her bikini in the barn, then enjoy a few minutes under the hose. She’d start with her boots.
