GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

Tuesday lands here in SPI with a somewhat cloudy morning that’s supposed to clear up. The temperature should hit a high of 90°F today (just over 32°C). There’s always a chance of rain popping up, but it’s slim today.

I’ll spend the morning writing. Jason and I are meeting Naomi and Steve for lunch at Grapevine Cafe. They want to talk about condos they’ve looked at. Of course, tomorrow’s shoot will come up.

Steve is going to sit in on the shoot. He says he’s done that a handful of times over the years. This one will be different—Naomi will be modeling.

Naomi is starting to represent two relatively new models. They have some experience, but it’s limited and needs refining.

Nadia Belén Lozano is twenty-four and comes to us from McAllen, where she manages a small clothing boutique and has already modeled for some of its social media posts. She has a strong commercial look, an expressive face, and a natural sense of style. On Wednesday, we’ll work on variety—slowing her transitions, changing her hands, and letting each pose become a complete picture before moving on. I think once she sees how much one small adjustment can change an image, she’ll grow very quickly.

Danielle Amara Okafor is twenty-two and recently moved from Houston to Corpus Christi after finishing college. She played collegiate volleyball, so she’s comfortable with attention and knows how to carry herself confidently. Her challenge is that she follows posing directions very literally, which can make her look stiff or overly serious. We’ll focus on asymmetry, relaxed movement, facial range, and carrying one visual story from pose to pose. She has the presence for editorial work—I want to help her trust it.

It really feels crazy that Naomi is looking to AGI to help develop them as models. Tomorrow will be a first step, and my job is to help them take it. Stumbles are allowed because that’s how we roll—and why Naomi created the boot camp idea in the first place.

That’s all for now. I’ll be back later, so see you then.

FOUR AND A HALF MONTHS by Camila Lopez

I started working for SPI PD four and a half months ago. My first day was March 16.

I have different days off each week—sometimes it works out to three, even four days in a row. Today, I came to the beach. Turns out the rain found me despite that 12% chance.

One of the lifeguards came by just before it started. “Looks like rain…”

I answered before I could check myself. “Story of my life…”

I guess the clouds fit my thoughts today.

I’m renting a little house in Port Isabel that is more than enough for me. It’s not fancy. I keep it clean. It’s a landing spot on my days off and a place to sleep.

Since starting work here, I’ve been busy. I was given a special task to build rapport with teens living here. I had to learn all the businesses and get to know employees. It hasn’t been unpleasant at all.

But I’ve been so busy learning how to do my job and then doing it that I didn’t even realize I was lonely. Until today.

Something hit me along with the falling rain. I got up and stood staring into the distance as the past four and a half months replayed in my mind. Nothing has really been bad. It has just been incomplete.

I know a lot of people. But the closest things I have to friends are the sixty-something dispatcher and a few dozen teens who think my first name is “Officer.” My workdays are literally filled with people in the stores and on the streets where I patrol.

But…

I walked to the water’s edge and stood there, letting the waves roll over my feet. An idea began to take shape. Just as I stood between the beach and the Gulf, I felt caught between past and present—between what has been and what could be.

A thought formed fully.

I need to find a church. And make some friends…

LUNCH WITH NAOMI by Ailana Geven Keller

I’m here at Grapevine Cafe waiting on Naomi and Steve. Jason is running a little late, but he’ll be here shortly after they arrive.

We’re having lunch and talking about two things. First, they’ve found some places they’re considering buying. They want to show us pictures and talk through the options. Second, we’ll talk about tomorrow’s boot camp.

One thing I’m trying to get my head around is that Naomi thinks I can teach her things about modeling. Her claim is that she modeled so long ago that some of her experience is outdated because of how the industry has changed.

She’s talking about moving through the process, especially in the digital era, when a photographer can fire off a hundred shots in a few minutes using burst mode. The photographer can review the images, find the shot, and say, “That’s it. Next outfit.”

So, I’ll grant that she’s not wrong about that. I just don’t think it will take her long to adjust.

I’d say that if she were in charge of hair, makeup, and wardrobe, the faster pace might be a surprise… Just a thought.

The thing she keeps pointing to is that AGI creates a successful, high-quality, safe atmosphere during shoots. That’s why she wants to bring the new models here for the boot camp.

We get the quality, but not at the expense of the people producing it. She says she saw how I guided Jasmine, Sasha, Geoni, Kaylee, and the others through professional-quality sessions. No one cried. That, she says, is a good thing, and she wants to capitalize on it.

So, that’s happening again tomorrow. And you’ll get to see some of what we do, right?

I’ll be back tonight, so see you then.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

Maybe I should just accept that, on nights before big photo shoots, I’ll do my goodnight post sitting here on the floor.

I generally think of myself as easygoing and ready to flex with whatever happens. Maybe that’s fine for me when I’m the only one depending on the outcome.

Shoots like tomorrow’s affect a lot of people, and they’re all depending on what AGI does. I like coming over the night before and just checking things.

Tomorrow is not only a shoot but also a new-model boot camp. I get to teach and coach.

Naomi will be here, too. She insists that, at this point, I know more about being in front of the camera than she does. She told me to think of her as a learner, too.

That’s a flip.

Last week proved that a shoot can happen without me. Jason says the boot camp couldn’t. Not yet. He and Geoni are getting more confident teaching people how to pose. Jasmine and Sasha are feeling more confident coaching models through the wardrobe and logistics process.

We are growing into a strong team. And that feels great.

Yet, with clients waiting for the finished images, taking the time to make sure everything is ready makes sense. Lights… Cameras… All good. It should be a great day.

May you gradually become the best you possible. Push on each day and each week until you can look back and see how far you’ve come.

Good night.

Be your best you!

GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller. Good morning, Ailana. I think lunch is a great idea. Of course he wants to sit in. His wife is modeling this time. I'm sure they will have a very pleasant evening later. I wish them luck in the condo search. Very important decision, of course. The new models sound very interesting. Distinct personalities to fit a variety of poses. I think, Ailana, that you have reawakened Naomi's love for the artistic and fun side of modeling, not just her business side. Thanks for the preview. Have a great day!

FOUR AND A HALF MONTHS by Camila Lopez. Good afternoon, Officer. Happy sort of anniversary. At least you made it to the beach. As I said on IG, I really do like your swimsuit. The cut, the color. It, um, "suits" you very well. I see by your post that you have been contemplating your life. It seems to be a pretty good life. You need a spiritual connection and social connections. Now that you recognize this, I have no doubt that you can find some answers. You made me smile with your joke about kids thinking your first name is Officer. But I think that proves your rapport with said kids. Thank you for your post, Camila. I hope you find the connections you are looking for. Enjoy the rest of your day off at the beach.

LUNCH WITH NAOMI by Ailana Geven Keller. She is right, I think, about you being able to familiarize her with new techniques and practices. And this further strengthens an already strong partnership. So, enjoy your lunch.
