GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

When chaos and an unexpected storm are raging, things tend to go unmentioned. I’m going to try to lay out the events of the next few days that aren’t part of the Ryans’ now-amended adoption plan.

Today is Tuesday. (I checked.) There’s work to be done by all.

Tonight, Jasmine and Kaylee fly to Seattle for a shoot on Wednesday. They return Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, Sasha and I are going to sit down, conference-call Naomi, and get agent agreements executed with the X-Team models Naomi is turning over to us. For now, that’s Meredith, Evelyn, Rebecca, Danielle, and Olivia. Naomi won’t sign with us herself. Naomi says she’s on the hunt for a few more faces who can bring different looks to the team. I guess we’re all standing by for that.

Thursday, Naomi has a shoot lined up for AGI Creative. Mostly studio, but some location work. I’ve talked Evelyn and Olivia to come to the studio for a couple hours to go through the process once or twice. Otherwise, it will just be us AGI Creative people—Jasmine and Kaylee will be back by then—plus Kiriana and the ladies from the clinic as time permits.

Friday is a travel day. Sasha and Jasmine have planned a trip to San Francisco. It will be just Sasha, Clay, Jasmine, Jason, and me. The Ryans will be dealing with Aria’s adoption process. Emily wants to stay here—you know…Kel will be here—and Izzy, Geoni, and everyone else staying on the island will supervise her.

We’ll be in San Francisco through Tuesday the 25th and travel home on Wednesday.

By then, the adoption preliminaries ought to be in their final stages, with Aria possibly arriving to begin her placement the following weekend.

Other than that, I suppose it’s business as usual.

Whatever that means.

A SISTER by Kel Ryan

I wish I could tell you how I feel about learning that I have a half-sister and that she might be coming to live with us. Moreover, I wish I knew how I felt about that. Work in progress.

Emily has no doubt about how she feels. But maybe she needs to adjust. Just a little because…

I’ll just tell you what went down.

We were sitting here doing math modules and had gotten to a stopping place when she looked over. “Can you believe it? We’re going to have a sister.”

“What?”

“If Aria gets adopted, we’ll have a sister.”

I spun that around a little, then said, “I don’t think that’s how it works.”

She shrugged. “I mean like not on paper. But like family.”

“Emily, there’s a major problem with that idea.”

She frowned. “How so?”

“If Aria is your sister and if she is my sister, then that makes you my sister, too. Like the transitive property in math or something.”

She paused and tried to buy time. “Wait… Let me think about that.”

I kept going. “I don’t want to be dating my sister’s sister.”

“Okay, wait! That’s not what I meant!”

“It’s what you sort of said.”

“I need to reword it.”

“Yeah, for sure!”

She really didn’t give herself enough time. “Could she be both of our half-sisters without us being siblings?”

I’m still trying to sort that out.

She changed the idea to a question. “So you get a sister and I get what?”

I said the first thing I thought of. “An eight-year-old neighbor.”

“That’s boring. There’s got to be something better. I want it to be something special.”

I couldn’t think of anything to call it, but I could see what it could be. “It will be special. I’m sure of that. You’re going to make it special.”

She nodded. ““I was about eight when I gave up on ever being adopted. My mother got me back when I started first grade, but you know that didn’t last. Back to foster care for me. She’s going to be so happy.”

I smiled. “Yeah… we’re going to make sure of that, right?”

She rocked over into my shoulder. “Bet.”

JUST LOGISTICS by Mateo Alvarez

When I got on the bus to go home, Brooks was already seated. I slid in beside her, like I did yesterday and most days last spring.

She was holding her phone and looking out the window.

“How was your day?” I said.

“Fine.”

I felt a vibe but didn’t know what it was about. I had something I wanted to tell her, so I just went for it.

“I want to tell you something.”

I think she rolled her eyes. “Okay…”

“Angelique and me have first and second periods together… Environmental Systems and Art I. We noticed yesterday. Today she said, ‘Can I just walk with you so I don’t look like a stalker following you?’”

“Naturally you said yes,” Brooks replied. “Why are you telling me this?”

I checked myself, ’cause it seemed like I’d done something wrong. Then I answered. “I wanted you to know ahead of time. Like, it’s just logistics. We got passing period to get to the same place… I wanted you to know about it.”

“So you can walk her to class and I won’t think you’re cheating on me.”

“Cheating? I wouldn’t even call it walking her to class. Just going to the same place.”

“That’s walking her to class.”

I paused again. “Brooks, what’s going on?”

Then she showed me a Snap she’d saved on her phone. “If you’re going to break up with me, just tell me.”

“Break up? Brooks…”

This time I know she rolled her eyes. “What?”

“I’ll just tell her to walk by herself if you think I’m cheating. I… It would kill me if you broke up with me. And it hurts that you think I’m cheating. Who sent that?”

“Lucía from Youth Group.”

“She’s always stirring things up and creating drama. I’ll tell Angelique she can walk by herself.”

Brooks stared out the window for, like, a month, then she looked down. “Don’t do that… Whatever.”

“Brooks…” I started to tell her that lately I’ve been imagining what being married to her will be like, but I chickened out. “…I’d never do anything to mess up what we have. It’s, like, everything to me after God.”

“Okay…” She shrugged. “I was scared.”

“Don’t be. Please…”

“Okay.”

I’m not letting this end here, but for now, that’s where it is.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

Welcome to the worst Good Night chapter in ages. I couldn’t even decide which robe to wear.

Jason solved the dilemma with some quick thinking. Also, welcome to my closet again.

Tuesday was good. I worked. Emily did schoolwork. Jason started looking at San Francisco for content ideas for when we get there.

Here’s a twist… Josh is usually the lead writer for what he and Jason create.Josh will be in the throes of working on Aria’s adoption, so Jason is dragging Clay into the process.

“Just help me take good notes,” he said.

Clay agreed. “We can pull it off.”

So, tomorrow… I told you the plan already. Jasmine and Kaylee fly to Seattle. Sasha and I work out modeling agent contracts for Naomi’s X-Team.

I guess all that’s left is for me to hang these three robes back up and call it a day.

May your routine days be productive and satisfying and may they lead you to peace, joy, and prosperity.

Good night.

A SISTER by Kel Ryan. Hey man. I can't begin to imagine what you feel. Ailana probably can, though. Emily, too, from her side. Wait. What?? Um, Emily, you're having an episode. She can be something special, but Kel is right. She can't be your sister. She will definitely have a special connection to you, but that's not it. I like eight year old neighbor. Emily, um, let's stick with that. For now. Thanks.

JUST LOGISTICS by Mateo Alvarez. Mateo! Hey! Um, wow, you are caught in a web.Honesty and up frontless should get you out, but proceed very carefully. A girl from Youth Group should be better than that. Hmm. Reassure Brooks. Then, maybe, Brooks will confront Lucia. Good luck, sir.
