GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller
Long ago, I promised I’d share a visit to Nesbit Park with you. Here it is!
Nesbit Park is right here in Bartlett, and it’s really not far from our house at all.
If you are looking for a solid escape into nature right in the middle of suburbia, Nesbit Park is a pretty good choice. It covers more than 335 wooded acres. The city lists about 11 miles of mountain-bike trails, plus roughly 2.5 miles on its running and hiking trail map. They are enjoyed by mountain bikers, trail runners, and hikers.
The only problem I can think of is the nickname. The trails are locally known as Stanky Creek. I think they need a new publicist!
The land used to be a family farm owned by Katherine Nesbit. Before she passed away in 1991 at the age of 98, she pleaded to keep it free from heavy development. Her final wish was granted—the land was annexed and preserved.
Today, the park is managed by Bartlett Parks & Recreation, with local trail groups and volunteers helping support the trails. It’s a really nice place to disappear into the trees for a while and forget you’re still in the Memphis suburbs.
Michael and I have been trying to make a habit of getting out just to walk. That’s been tough with all these feels-like temperatures pushing 100 and beyond, but early mornings have been manageable.
I suppose that’s enough nature reporting from me for one morning. We need to finish our walk, get home, shower, and actually get ready for work.
Let me leave you with a Bible verse, though…
Philippians 1:27 (NIV): “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then … I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.”
Maybe that fits a morning walk better than I realized when I picked it. We spend a lot of time asking where we’re going, but Scripture also cares about how we walk while we’re getting there. Whatever happens, conduct yourself in a way that reflects Christ.
That’s something I can carry down the trail with me today.
