DRAFTING TABLE AWAITS—Extra Content

Hannah had reached that pleasant point in the morning when almost everything required to become a functioning adult had already happened.

The shower was finished. Her hair had been dried and encouraged into something resembling the style she intended rather than whatever gravity had proposed overnight. Makeup was done. Teeth were brushed. Somewhere along the way, she had even managed to get dressed—or most of the way there.

The coffee was nearly finished, too.

That was important.

Hannah stood in the bathroom holding the last of it in her green mug while mentally walking through the morning ahead. There was no job-site visit waiting for her, no client meeting and nobody expecting her to crawl around an old basement looking at structural members.

Today, the drafting table awaited.

She had engineering work to settle into, drawings to review and details that would probably consume several hours while making the clock feel as though it had jumped ahead in fifteen-minute increments.

Hannah rather liked days like that. Fieldwork gave her variety, but there was something satisfying about sitting down with a problem and gradually turning it into lines, dimensions, notes and something another person could eventually build.

First, however, there remained the minor matter of becoming completely dressed.

Her blouse was already on, though not particularly committed to the concept yet. The rest would take another minute or two. Then she would collect her bag, make sure she had everything she needed and head downstairs.

It was not an exciting morning.

No crisis had developed overnight. Nobody had called with an emergency. Nothing suggested that the day would become memorable.

And Hannah was perfectly happy with that.

Some mornings were allowed to consist of getting clean, getting dressed, finishing the coffee and going to work.

She took another sip.

Almost done.
