Chapter 3.1.68: ORDINARY DAY by Hannah Madison
Good evening! Today was an exceptionally normal day, which I have decided is something worth appreciating.
I went to work. I answered emails. I spent some time at the drafting station. I talked to Merritt. I drank coffee. Nobody discovered an emergency hiding inside a set of drawings, and nothing required me to crawl into a basement.
There was one moment of excitement—using that word generously.
Merritt came over to my desk looking for a dimension on one of the drawings I had open. I pointed at it. He stared at the screen.
“That says eight feet, six inches.”
“Yes.”
“You told me eight feet, eight.”
I stared at it.
Then I stared at him.
Then I discovered the little note beside my keyboard where I had very clearly written 8'-6". Apparently, sometime between reading the number and speaking it, my brain had decided six and eight were interchangeable concepts.
Fortunately, Merritt has learned that asking me twice is sometimes a valuable quality-control procedure.
There are glamorous engineering stories. That was not one of them.
The other news today is considerably more worthwhile. Paul has announced that the Pay It Forward Society project we heard about earlier is happening this weekend. There’s a church in the Bronx with several elderly members whose homes could use some painting here and there.
The plan is intentionally simple. Show up. Scrape or prep what needs it. Put some paint on walls, trim, porches or wherever it will help. Leave a few homes looking better than when we arrived.
I like that.
Not every effort to help somebody needs to become a massive undertaking. Sometimes a person has a porch railing that needs paint and can’t safely do it anymore. Somebody else has a Saturday and two capable hands.
Those two things ought to meet.
So that’s today. Very ordinary work, one temporarily confused engineer, and something good waiting for us this weekend.
Now I’m home, comfortable and very nearly ready to call the day finished.
Thanks for spending a little of it with me. See you next time.
