jazz

perfect timing, i just finished ep 3

sean carter

finally... that end scene 'we didn't even kiss' BROKE ME

Mockingjay

Yesssssss been waiting for this.

Rebel Pilot

I hate this. I will have to wait till after work to hopefully watch it. I read hbo max will debut in 2026 in my country they better have this show and i will sub just for that, will cancel netflix instead.

Cheryl Wosley

On Behalf of all my fellow Canadians....... You're Welcome! :)

sean carter

also I don't think Ilya was jealous that Shane won rookie of the year as u said in the intro... Ilya shouted 'not everything is about you hollander' I think he is dealing with his own family issues as we saw in episode one.. Shane just assumed it was about the rookie of the year.

Kier

Shane clutching Ilya's jacket to his chest when they're in the stairwell after their first time like it just saved his life will never not get me 😭

Rebel Pilot

I really hope hbo fixes the darkening, the scenes arent this dark originally on crave

K

The way it keeps faking out a fade to black like any other show would do after the clapping starts and then it just fades into yet another different position had me laughing out loud

CG

I think they do it intentionally. It's a kind of micro-censorship.

CG

The scene where the stakes were raised.

Lisaaaaa

I thought i saw someone say they did? It looked better when i glanced at a rewatch at least

Fred Ferraro

They’ve already fixed it as of today.

CG

Or as I now call it. "50 Shades of 'Gurl.'"

Lisaaaaa

The ending broke my heartttt! Poor baby girl Shane

K

Keep and eye out. They just announced tonight that Netflix has agreed to buy Warner Bros and HBO/HBOMax

CG

I love how this episode, in particular, hints at the gooey core of Iliya. I find it super sexy that they show him to be a very thoughtful and considerate lover: "Are you ok? Are you ok?". All these little hints that he ain't the asshole he makes himself out to be and is actually quite (sticky) sweet underneath it all.

K

This and Episode 3 at the same time! That's my kind of tag team.

K

First we find out Justin Trudeau is bisexual and then Canada 🇨🇦 gives this damn show! We can't thank you enough.

Melissa T

Thank you for saying "no matter the sexuality" bc sexuality is truly fluid. I understand the desire for more queer people in queer roles (or in any roles), but there's been too much discussion about real people's sexuality when it's no one's business. <3 love y'all and your reactions!

Bradam Reacts

We’ve been filming some Skam reactions this week! S4 premiere coming up very soon ❤️

Jason Ryan

Just in time. Episode 3. 👌🏾 interested to see your reaction

K

The reaction to the rimming screams for y'all to react to Queer As Folk

Fred Ferraro

I think they were hooking up when they were texting for like two years. They just don’t show it because it would take up too much time but I’m like 99% sure they were and supposedly in the book they are I just wish it was more clear. It would be crazy if they weren’t. They just didn’t fuck for the first time for a while. I mean to keep that going for so long without hooking up I don’t know how they’d do it. They’d be seeing each other frequently and Ilya is texting him address and dick pics? I feel like that sold it for me. Plus they were way too familiar when they get together to have sex for the first time.

Sussu

i have to say, i'm glad i joined your patreon for this show specifically. i had faith based on your YT reactions that you'd have more to say than the average "wow this is so hot" reactor (which, valid lol) but i've really enjoyed hearing your comments on WHY the characters act the way they do beyond the physical relationship, especially considering you haven't read the books. glad to see critical thinking skills still exist in the context of making entertaining content online :D

Fred Ferraro

My jaw was on the floor. Every time I thought I could relax it was just a position change.

j-l

the way ilya keeps asking for consent and stops to make sure shane is okay is so important to me actually. CONSENT IS SEXY!!

Inna Kajaste

Okay I wasn't even gonna watch this reaction series (haven't read the books, haven't seen the show) but poor sad Shane has me SO hooked. I apparently love torturing myself with sad one-sided love. 😂😭

CG

In the book, they were not hooking up except for what we saw.

icyguess

The chair drag that makes history. Connor Storrie is a truly epic actor. So is Hudson, but Connor obviously takes his art very seriously and Ilya is his baby. He’s so kind and sweet irl it’s just gobsmacking how he transforms. Ghad I love this show sm ♥️

K

In Russia you gotta remember that Ilya's phone is probably tapped by the government spy agency. Despite conversation Shane was part of about how dangerous it is for gay people in Russia he still get up in thw space of the Russian man he's banging while in Russia.

CG

Rode em Russky

icyguess

100%. Ilya can act as tough as he needs to in order to survive and feel safe. But checking in like that reveals what’s underneath that armor. Kindness. Honor. An ego that isn’t fragile. And when Shane gently kisses his forehead it almost looked like Ilya was the one having a panic attack. Him being treated with care is not something he has had a lot of. Scared shitless, both of them.

Bridget K.

They did end up fixing it the other day. It's much better than it was. I'm not sure which platform they watched theirs on (or when), but it was only fixed about 2-3 days ago on HBO I think.

Bridget K.

The narration is 3rd person in both books, but book 1 focuses much more on Shane, and book 2 focuses much more on Ilya, so between the two, you get a better balance. Hopefully, we will see The Long Game adapted too (I feel good about it with the reception being what it has been). The other thing I wanted to mention about the romance genre in general is that almost all have a happy ending... so that's not really a spoiler but part of the social contract for reading romance. So most are a HEA (happily ever after) or at least an HFN (happy for now) resolution to the stories. I read a lot of very angsty romance books, but that's because I enjoy a book breaking my heart and putting me back together again by the end of it. (See definition of masochist). lol. But back to Heated Rivalry and the episode, they got me real good with Shane's "We didn't even kiss." Shane thinks about it in the book, but it doesn't appear as a text he types but then deletes. I really liked the changes they made to that scene. I just finished E3, so I look forward to your next reaction.

Mockingjay

Guys, I beg. Please read the book. The show is great in its own right, but the book is phenomenal. Hudson and Connor fell out of the pages, they are perfection in the roles. But please, read Heated Rivalry and then The Long Game. I know it’s hard to tell with how stoic Ilya is being, but trust me when I say… he 100% fell first. He is just scared to death because he doesn’t know what to do with his feelings. 🥺

icyguess

Yes. And in his way, he trusts Shane with something he’s never trusted anyone else with - his vulnerability and that huge heart of his. The cracks in his defenses is unraveling him.

Fred Ferraro

I also just have to add when Shane crawled across the bed I about left my body.

icyguess

They fixed it. I rewatched about 2 hours ago and it’s so much better.

K

It always cracks me up the way I subscribed to thinking that Adam was the hornier half of the couple but it's always Bradley the first one with his mouth open and tounge out 🤣🤣🤣

j-l

rachel reid wrote ilyas pov of the scene where he watches shane + what he was doing before he joined shane for the award show, i rlly recommend reading it https://www.rachelreidwrites.com/news/2024/3/24 he was not doing well 😭 😭 down bad

j-l

''English left Ilya. Everything left Ilya except raging lust and something sharper and more painful that he needed to ignore. “Why does it have to be you?” he said aloud in Russian. “Why are you so perfect? It’s fucking awful.” im SICK

Fred Ferraro

Yes someone had said that but they also said in the book you see a lot more so I interpreted that to mean that it happens more than we see in the show. I’ll have to go back and see what they said.

K

That arch!

K

We've all been there. Gratification and regret are best friends when you're a gay man in the closet.

Erica

Wait what ?! Justin Trudeau is bisexual ??? You’ve just blown my mind, I had no idea.

j-l

ilya might act all tough but hes actually terrified. the more he feels for shane the more he starts distancing himself which we see in this ep. when we see him be soft with shane those are true and honest moments, but he knows he cant have that and forces himself to walk away. although he clearly cant stay away lmao

j-l

exactly :((( when shane is being soft w him in that moment you can see he enjoys it but then his face changes and you can tell he panics and has to remove himself :( hes a soft scared boy on the inside i just wanna hug him

K

Yes! We should not be damaging that gay actors put themselves knowing that thwy would be either typecast in gay roles and rejected for straight roles because they are gay. Visibility at that price is not Visibility. What matters is whether the actors fit the role and of they are willing to be true to the character regardless of their real life orientation.

j-l

about the whole communication thing, we gotta remember that its not just that ilya is scared to talk ab how he feels, he also literally cant put his feelings into words the way he wants to bc hes not fluent in english. hes improving as we saw this ep but in ep 1 shane had to step in when an interviewer asked ilya a long question bc he got confused

Ivalani

And poor Shane had no idea and actually thought he was maybe calling him a slut lol. It's a bummer they didn't include at least one of those Russian sentences in that scene, it's a missed opportunity for sure.

Donna Borg

If i can recommend something thing to help you understand how Ilya is feeling at this point in time and his thoughts in that end scene in Las Vegas without having to read the whole book , is the author has a short POV chapter on her website that you can Quickly read and has no spoilers because it only covers that last scene. Its called Heated Rivalry: Las Vegas Remix . https://www.rachelreidwrites.com/news/2024/3/24 . Enjoying your reactions ☺

Kat

I am so loving this story, it breaks my heart because Shane really wants both the physical and emotional intimacy but right now Ilya can only give physical and clearly struggles with the emotional side. Ilya can come across as cocky and arrogant but he has such a sweet and gentle side too which I love. I hope that side will come out more as we watch. I love this show!!

Patrick

I don’t think there is a 2886 Beacon St. That would put it right near Boston College, where I went to school.

Adrienne Gosselin

Agh dang I hoped you guys would catch it after the fix! It’s so dark!!! HBO just fixed the lighting and I couldn’t believe how much better it was, you can actually SEE them!

Ingeborg

It’s interesting because in the show it really does seem like Shane really wants a more emotional connection etc. But in the book it’s a lot more nuanced. He’s very deeply closeted and he’s sort of mad at himself for wanting Ilya and also holds Ilya at a distance. So I guess in a way Ilya comes off a bit worse in the show while their (attempts at) causalness is more equal in the book if that makes sense.

Ingeborg

This always breaks my heart so much I CAN’T

Maria Stoycheva

I don't think native speakers always get this. This was a big point in the book but in the show people just hear his accent and don't stop to consider that if he has such a strong accent, he might not be fluent. As someone who has learnt many languages, when learning a language there is a long stretch of time when you can only say what you CAN say and not necessarily what you WANT to say. It is extremely frustrating and I forgive Ilya for being grumpy sometimes. There is nothing worse than wanting to connect with someone but not having the vocabulary to be your authentic self 🥺

Maria Stoycheva

I really love it when they incorporate these moments in the series. I want to hear Ilya speak more Russian in front of Shane. I'm a language nerd, so it is fun for me when media switches languages and forces me to start translating in my head 😅 but it is also very authentic to how we sometimes react. And people who only speak English cannot appreciate the freedom that speaking a rare language gives you. When I am abroad, I can shit-talk someone and they will never know. And I sometimes do! 🤣

VV

Don't know if it was already brought to your attention. You mentioned Canada being more progressive than the US in terms of gay marriage, they really are. So much so that Crave (Bell Media is the parent company) actually used government money (tax revenue) to partially fund Heated Rivalry! Such a progressive move!

Ivalani

Yeah, book Shane is much grumpier and less smitten, outwardly at least, than TV Shane. But I love TV Shane so much.

Anaïs

Ilya wasnt mad bc Shane win but bc he has to go home

Ingeborg

TV Shane is so endearing!

K

Yes, he meant it when he told Shane congratulations and then it was the same when Ilya wom the Stanley cup and Adam said he saw Shane go through all the emotions. He was so happy for Ilya and wanted to crack a smile but couldn't because he's in a room full of people that thinks he hates him. They really do carw about each other and are trapped in there circumstances.

K

And they're conservative party isn't trying to divide their people or shut down their government because of it. What a crazy concept!

K

They aren't going to use real addresses. That's like them using 555 for every phone prefix. There's no such thing.

Di

I love how wriggly you get while watching this 😂 I’ve read all the books and can’t wait for the rest of the series.

K

Ilya wants the emotional intimacy too but he's never had it so he doesnt know how to give it. And this is why you will often see gay men in generation gap relationships. Ilya and Shane being the same age don't recognize what's the obstacles and how to resolve them whereas if Shane was 5 to 10 years older he would know be better aware of what Ilya is going though because he's likely already experienced it and would know how to navigate and talk about it with Ilya and work though it. When you're the same age through you're stuck kind of having to figure it all out together at the same time with no guidance.

K

This comes up in the book and Shane does adress it. I hope they replicate it in the show. It's such a great moment.

Lina

There’s only one openly gay player with an NHL contract right now, but he hasn’t been called up from the AHL yet. It would still be a very big deal if it happened today! He went to Milwaukee Pride in his jersey this year, it was so great to see 😊

Edward

The author released the hotel room scene in Vegas from Ilya's perspective as a standalone chapter. There are no spoilers for anything else upcoming, just given you an insight into how he is feeling. Might be worth a short read: https://www.rachelreidwrites.com/news/2024/3/24

VV

They are both so talented. Jacob Tierney said he found it cute that Hudson kept Shane's socks on during sex because that wasn't planned. But Hudson was showing how reserved Shane still was. And the famous chin tremble while Shane is watching Ilya win his first Stanley Cup. I really truly believe that beyond their natural talent, Connor and Hudson have been so great with the physical little details because they both have created indie short films where they wrote, starred in, and directed. Short films require you to film in such a way that you get the biggest impact in such a short time on not a big budget... so EVERY prop and movement are extremely important.

VV

I think the Vegas bathroom and the stairwell are my 2 favorite scenes... Hudson kills it with his acting so soft.

antonio

Literally everyone wanted him to smell them lol

Israel

It’s sad bc it actually feels like a crazy concept to me 😭

Fiineval

Problem is that when Shane wants to comunicate he chooses the worst topic. Asking Ilya about russia and his family. Shane is fortunate to have loving parents and support system and sort of presumes it is the same for other people.

JJ

Keep in mind that the Vegas scene was on their first day shoot! Chemistry right from the start!

Maria Stoycheva

the book isn't just 3rd person omniscient. it actually switches between their POVs and you can very clearly see what each of them is thinking in every situation. it makes you immediately sympathetic to Ilya because it shows you that he is far more emotional that he lets people believe. Jacob Tierney went a slightly different route with the show and he let Shane be the obvious one and Ilya be the complicated one but I am sure that he has a plan for the audience to start seeing Ilya as more than a piece of (asshole) meat (pun intended, I guess?) and as the true Character. (Ilya, apparently, is in *every* book of the series - he's most people's favourite character, and, as an Ilya stan, I think there is good reason for that and it's not just his looks - he isn't even THAT good-looking in the books)

Maria Stoycheva

everybody did, yes (reactors). I didn't because that would have 1. broken his resolve :D and 2. lessened his power. and we needed the power dynamic strong, so it is more powerful when Shane flips it a second later ;)

Fred Ferraro

I said on twitter already but it’s the most unrealistic thing in the show so far. Rozanov is clearly a freaky slut and him not taking a deep sniff is just unbelievable.

Fred Ferraro

To be fair they need to be able to show people they care about each other without their inner monologues. So they give us that with the little moments with Shane like in the elevator or Ilya staring into space with a cigarette hanging out his mouth as Shane leaves. Stuff like that.

Henry Riley

No seriously, if god hates the gays, why do we keep winning?! 🔥🪭

Fred Ferraro

The bathroom was Hudson’s favorite of the season he said.

Karoliina

I can't scroll all the way to start but all those time jumps and texting in the start are the hookups they have had. When they are talking about worth the wait, it's the first time for penetration. This is clear in the book but remains more vague if you only watch the show. But they did meet when possible also leading up to the Beacon street backdoor meet up.

Karoliina

The chair drag was Connor improvising, it was in one of their interviews.

Rose

I will go to war for IR

Kier

This is correct, Jacob confirmed recently they were hooking up 3-4 times a year. I think the texts could have reflected this better, but they definitely were.

anni2004

The book switches between their POVs. It is interesting that you got the feeling that we are seeing more of Shane's POV. It is actually the same in the book. In the first part (which corresponds to the first episode), there are 3x more pages from Shane's POV than from Ilya's. In the second part (which is the second episode), it is not as drastic, but there are a few more pages from Shane's POV.

Christy

“You’re going to penetrate me but I can’t penetrate your heart…” thats a bar😫

Tonie W

Y’all match each others freak so well 😭😭😭 love it

Ingeborg

Absolutely! I just thought it was interesting how it sort of changes the dynamic a little bit! Not like a ton, but!

Amanda Brown

joined the patreon just for this, love this show and love you guys!

Arranit Malushaj

The oxygen left my lungs so quickly at that crawl, and the look on Shane’s face. 😫😮‍💨🥵

AK

In the book we get a bit more from Ilya's perspective which shows how much it's not just horniness from his side. Someone else pointed out how in the books you can tell when he pushes Shane to do things and is then kinda shocked when Shane is obedient and actually does what he's been asked to do:) That adds to the spice level in the books .. if that's even possible:)

Arranit Malushaj

“👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻” Not Ilya applauding without using his hands.

sirius

Yes and if you go to Rachel Reid's website, you can read Ilya's POV of Vegas! It gives you so much more understanding of Ilya and his thoughts and feelings and it just makes you love him so much. (if anyone wants a link to the Ilya's POV, lmk)

sirius

Ilya wasn't that upset about losing the rookie of the year award, like sure he wanted to win but why he was upset was because he had to go back to Russia and back to his abusive father and shithead brother And yes, if their secret got out, Ilya couldn't go back to Russia (he could literally be imprisoned for being gay. His brother is a cop btw, this was mentioned in the books. And well yeah his dad obviously wouldn't accept him) But he couldn't stay in US or Canada either when his hockey contract ends since he doesn't have citizenship. So yeah obviously the ridicule and the possible response from the fans and teammates and league is already bad enough for both of them if they got outed but Ilya has russia on top of that

sirius

6:57 ->Yess, really great takes about their relationship and very true. The sexual part was always there and the slowburn is about the emotional side and about the fact that even when they fall for each other, the public and their careers get in the way! <33

sirius

Yes and also with show Ilya you see mostly the side he shows to the public and can't really see how deeply he feels things because he doesn't always know how to show them and it's very subtle in the show whereas in the books we can see what he thinks and feels

JadedSims

The gasp at 9 😂😂

JadedSims

Also little fun fact, it mentions several times in both Heated Rivlary and The Long Game that Shane is turned on by the competition between him and Ilya, and how Ilya “rewards” him when he wins.

D0minique

I don't completely agree that the book is in the third pov. Yes it is, but in Heated Rivalry we see the world more like not through Shane's eyes, but in Shane's world. The world is quick and kind of upbeat, Shane has loving parents and plays hockey because he loves hockey (for Ilya it is also an escape). The Long game however feels like it would be in cloudy weather, with more nuances and the flaws of the world. I think there is not a POV, but the world building and view of the world is different in both books. But that is also logical because Shane has a 'normal and easy' life and Ilya's was with childhood trauma's. So the way Shane looks at world overall is very different than how Ilya looks at the world. It's still not from their POV but I do think Heated Rivalry is more writting around Shane or with Shane in mind and The Long Game more with Ilya.

Fred Ferraro

Man the only way to describe it was cock drunk. Like my guy wanted it bad. Like no one has wanted cock more than he did in that very moment.

Fred Ferraro

I would assume he could apply for asylum or something but that isn't easy.

Bradam Reacts

awww omg thank you!!! we love you too 🙂‍↕️🩵🩵

Bradam Reacts

i appreciate this comment so much. we love to throw ourselves into the show as much as possible and i'm so glad you're enjoying our reactions and discussions!! 🙂‍↕️🩵🩵

Sigrid

I do like the book but I gotta admit I was not very invested at the point where the show is currently. But this episode, and especially the ending with everything that happens in Vegas, form the bathroom to the hotelroom and the fucking texts that Shane write out... My god I've been devastated for a week!!! I can't imagine how I'll feel when we get to the parts of the book where I started to get really invested.

Sigrid

I think so too! The way Jacob speaks about the characters makes me think so at least. Like so far we have seen Ilya be at his sweetest during sex really, apart from the last scene where it seems like he is very purposfully not lettnig it become romantic the way it did before. He's harder to read, but I do think with what is coming the next episodes (4 and 5) we will be able to understand Ilya's feelings a lot better.

Gayle McGowan

The final shot of Ilya - the new cigarette not even lit and that thousad yard, blank stare. Both boys are going through it. Shane's pain is more visible while Ilya's is quiet and beneathe the surface.

Gayle McGowan

Not sure how many people are catching that Ilya makes his comment about the cup to tease Shane and break the tension because he sees Shane is nervous. He also likes to be a little shit don't get me wrong but he loves teasing Shane since he's so wound up all the time.

chickie

Yeah, I will say that you definitely do not get as much insight into Ilya's in the show. Not sure if it was intentional for the tv series or not. They allude to a lot, but the book makes it much clearer. The writer has a a short write up on the Las Vegas scene that is enlightening if you don't want to read the books yet, but want to see what lots of the commenters are posting about here. https://www.rachelreidwrites.com/news/2024/3/24

eyla.

Does anyone know if they will start watching Skam ss4 this month or next?👀

Bradam Reacts

We’re thinking of posting the S4 premiere episode this weekend! 🫣❤️

Rand C

I just finished watching episode 3 on Crave. Cannot wait to see your reaction!! 🏒❤️😍

Dee

Don't spoil the show for them book readers!

amélie

"Why is your penis on a dead girl's phone?" is and elite reference💀

Mark Edwards

Blown away by the new folks and increased activity these reactions have brought. Very happy for Bradam, our boys’ hard work deserves all the attention and support. I realize book fans might take issue with my POV but I agree with Brad re: the time jumps. They’re so extreme it’s tough to maintain suspension of disbelief. Of course the actors’ hot bodies distract enough to forgive such details. Still it’s a plot flaw. I can sort of see their E1 teasing stretching out over months, particularly since it’s established that Shane has never been with another man. But after that first encounter having years go by—nope, not believable. Admittedly I wasn’t under public scrutiny when I came out. Though I did have the fortuitous timing to burst from the closet just as HIV/AIDS entered stage left. The prospect of a fatal disease with each encounter vs. the media shame spotlight seem about even but maybe I’m drawing false equivalencies. Once I had an encounter with a penis in addition to my own there was no putting it back in my proverbial pants. I’ve seen the other comments here that the books have Jane and Lily hooking up more often than we see. If true, the blame has to go to poor scriptwriting.

AK

One more comment about the pressure on Shane as an Asian-Canadian player that someone pointed out online - in Shane's head it probably adds to the pressure of hiding his queer identity. It's almost like "I'm already different in one way, they won't accept me if I'm also gay". I think it's emphasized with all the conversations happening around all the endorsements he's getting.

Claudia Posch

My heart... The fucking yearning, the angst, the pain, the love. Both are down bad for each other, and I think they fell pretty fast. Ilya literally had them do an ad together just so that he had him alone for once. And babgirl will follow Ilya's commands to the end of the world. What a freaking show... Can't wait to watch more and see you react more XD

Phoenix Beifong

Love you guys. Can't wait for your reaction to episode 3. I laughed, I gagged, I hollered and I cried...

Amber

Love the Chicago reference you threw in there when Hayden was doing an impression of a reporter. The way he makes his voice sound, Chicago was immediately what I thought of too! 🤣 You talk about Scott Hunter & Shane being on different teams in the Olympics but they only play for on the same team once, Shane plays for Montreal & Hunter plays for New York. The scene where you see them on the same team in episode 1 was the All Stars game. Shane's apartment where they hooked up is not where Shane lives. Shane purchased an entire warehouse that had a loft apartment on the top floor, so he can hook up with Ilya in Montreal because Shane was scared of people seeing Ilya coming and going from his actual home. AND Ilya & Shane have a second book (The Long Game) so,🤞🏼 for at least a 2nd season. 🩵

Maria Stoycheva

Yes, I definitely agree. Ilya did it on purpose to break the tension. Not sure whether he was aiming to help Shane or himself, though - as we know, he's pretty gone by this point ;) right after that Shane actually got the upper hand, so ..

JustinThyme

Awesome video and reaction! So many of your comments made me laugh! Can’t wait for the next one!

Maria Stoycheva

Yes, he actually said it in an interview. He wanted Ilya to start out cocky and confident and stoic and slowly reveal the mushy interior. While Shane was meant to portray more of his internal monologues from the book, and so his face and body are more expressive. I think it is a brilliant idea because I definitely first got obsessed with Ilya for his bravado, and the audience of the TV series seems to be doing the same ;)

sirius

It's actually not even about the fact that they play for different teams in NHL. They are on different teams in the Olympics because of their nationality. Shane is Canadian, Scott is American! <33

sirius

I think you have not read the books and that's why the time jumps don't make sense to you. I definitely think this is a show best enjoyed by the people who have read the books

sirius

You missed a great line in 13:37😂 They are almost neck to neck in goal scoring and the reporter asked Shane what he thought about the fact that Ilya almost caught up to him and if Shane wanted to hear what Ilya said about it and Shane answered "Nah, I'll listen if he actually catches up" 😂 Also missed Ilya's "never in my life have I blushed, Russians do not do this" 😂

sirius

Love Bradley's "concent king" because that is a big part of Ilya's character in the books where he is outwardly cocky and a fuckboy but is a gentle and caring lover

sirius

Around 26:00 In the scene Ilya acts the way he does because he is afraid. He is afraid of two things. His feelings and attachment to Shane and well obviously the part about where being gay in russia is illegal😬

sirius

In the award seremony when Ilya said he was busy, if you wanna know what he was actually busy doing, read forward, if you don't, skip this one (it's not really much of a spoiler but anyway) . . . . . . . . . Ilya was "busy" in the bathroom having a panic attack about the fact that he hadn't seen Shane since the Olympics and that now he is about to see him again and he couldn't handle it :D

sirius

Fun (or not so fun idk) facts about the Vegas night . . These are from the books so be aware. If you have seen the Vegas scene, this isn't exactly spoilers, it's just giving a bit more insight on what they were thinking and feeling. . . Gonna be a long comment so feel free to ignore it if you are not interested :3 . 1. Ilya's first plan was to fuck Shane against the windows but he saw Shane be hesitant about the windows even though they were really high up so he changed his plan lol 2. It might seem like Ilya has the power in that scene and yeah kinda but that man is WHIPPED. Ilya would give Shane anything he asks for and Shane has no idea of the power he holds 3. The reason Ilya mentioned the Stanley Cup because he wanted to get Shane going. Annoying each other is their foreplay😂 that actually explains so many scenes and throwaway comments between them. 4. The reason they didn't kiss was because Ilya was afraid. This is a direct quote from Ilya's POV of Vegas: "The way Ilya was more tempted to gather Hollander in his arms and hold him all night than fuck him didn’t make sense. The way Ilya knew that if he kissed him he’d never stop didn’t make sense. He needed to be careful tonight. " 5. The reason Ilya didn't accompany Shane to the door was because he didn't want Shane to leave. His heart was breaking yk :') A quote: "Ilya kept his eyes closed so he wouldn’t need to watch him leave" Also a bonus quote from Ilya he said to Shane in that scene in Russian (so Shane wouldn't understand) “Why does it have to be you? Why are you so perfect? It’s fucking awful.”

David Lane

Ilya is actually an acronym that perfectly describes their relationship: “I Love You, Asshole!”

sirius

This comment might contain spoilers for people who have not read the books! <3 be aware . . . . . . . . I think the biggest difference between books and the show is how Ilya is perceived. In the books you know how soft he actually is, because we see what he thinks. Common misconception in show watchers is that Ilya doesn't care as much as Shane does but oh boy does he care In the show however you can't hear their thoughts so you can only see Ilya's facade, the outer shell he keeps on to survive. Maybe we'll see more soft Ilya in the future episodes tho

McQueen

Next episode is of my favorite character 🥰 sooo excited

Amber

I know, I was just clearing up that Bradley & Adam thought they played for the same MLH team.

Kristin

I figured it’s meant to look that way, so saying it’s different might kind of spoil the show?

sirius

Good point, I didn't think it was spoilers since it's known in the books since the beginning but I'll edit my comment. Thanks! :3 <33

Satu

The Olympics is a very tense time to be in Russia, especially when they are held in Russia. You definitely want to fly under the radar during that time. Russia has a pattern of invading other countries during the Olympics (in 2008 they invaded Georgia during Beijing summer Olympics, 2014 invasion of Crimea during the Russian Olympics depicted in the show, 2022 the full scale invasion of Ukraine during the Beijing winter Olympics) and whenever there is this type of hightened state activity Russia goes hard on anyone they see as opposing the regime... Ilia being cold and distant in Russia makes perfect sense and Shane has no idea how dangerous being gay/bi star athelete in Russia can be.

Satu

And getting this show at a time when we are fighting hard to uphold any of the rights we've gained as queer people in the recent decades. Give us all the queer joy (while this show isn't all joy for the characters it surely is joyful to watch 😅) to get us through these dark times!

Satu

I can't wait to see the softness being slowly revealed on screen!

Satu

Yes, it's 3rd person but not omnipresent, the narrator is more tapped into Shane's mind than Ilya's. Which works well since Ilya's wall comes down slower than Shane's. Same on the show.

Satu

I'm not sure how much the writer and the show runner have considered Russian politics (I do think they are doing a good job tho). But to be a Russian asulym seeker has been very difficult since the Russo-Ukranian war that started in 2014. Interestingly, Russia invaded Crime during the Sochi Olympics depicted in the show, and has a pattern of using the Olympics as a distraction when ivading countries (Georgia in 2008 Beijing summer Olympics, full scale invasion of Ukraine during Beijing winter Olympics 2022). So being in Russia as a gay/bi star athlete during the 2014 Olympics was very dangerous, the state would not treat you kindly if you were to "embarass" them with a scandal when they were hoping to polish their image while committing war crimes in another country. And with Russia breaking international law in Crimea, western countries have not been receiving Russian inmigrants with open arms since 2014 if even before.

Satu

I hope the hype the show is getting world wide shows them (and other countries with simila type of government funding for the arts) how profitable it is to fund queer art! 🙏

Clint

VITAL INFORMATION FOR YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE: THE ACTOR WHO PLAYS "KIP" IN EPISODE 3 OF HEATED RIVALRY IS THE SAME ACTOR WHO PLAYED THE ABSURDLY HOT MALE NURSE FROM OVERCOMPENSATING!!!!

Trine

will you be watching the final season of skam? I love you guys but i just need to know

G S

Oh this is FANTASTIC perspective -- not spoiler, but added depth. Thank you!

G S

I can understand your point of view, but I have a different one. I came out in the 1980's, too, and I also remember what it was like to be young and just cling onto the *idea* of a connection with someone irrespective of real obstacles. The timeframe seemed believable to me because I know what it's like to adapt to circumstances, and if you don't know that a relationship "should" involve seeing someone more often it's easier to convince yourself "well, maybe this is normal." I'm not invalidating your take, of course, I'm only sharing my thought process for why the time frame didn't seem unrealistic to me.

Kristin

Yeah they will.

Grace

To your comment about how it would consume your every waking thought. In the books it does consume both of them. At times they're both pretty miserable about it. Suffering in silence. So this push and pull you started to see in episode 2 is because of that. For example Ilya putting up walls and pushing Shane away is because it's painful. They literally spend almost 8 years yearning, pining, and only getting little bits of time together. Not even admitting to themselves how they really felt. Using sex and their brief moments together as a band aid of sorts to get them through each season/year. But when they finally give in and admit they're in love with each other it's like the dam breaks. You will see loyal, sexy, hot, devoted, committed, in LOVE Ilya. Everyone calling him a fuck boy with red flags right now will eat their words. When he is in it. He is IN IT.

Lauren

Shane's face when Ilya wins the Cup 😭🥹❤️ He was so PROUD of Ilya, knowing he just achieved a dream winning the championship🥹 someone on insta helpfully said that in the moment we see Ilya lift the cup, he yells " I did it Mama" and I cannot believe I didn't catch it the first viewing. now I am dyiiiiiiing 😭😭💔 They are both so down bad but Scared. To. Death.

Megan

Loving re-watching the episodes to see your reactions! Fun fact, parts of the series were filmed where I live. At the start of episode 2, the building Ilya is running in front of (Russia in the show) is actually across the street from me and where I take my dogs for walks. We walked through while they were filming set this past summer, though I didn’t know at the time what it was they were filming. When that scene popped up I was like, oh, I know that place, haha!

j-l

the time jumps are like this in the book too, its cause they only ever meet up when they play against each other. ilya hooks up with other ppl in between (tho he stops at some point cause he only wants shane), since hes bisexual hes fine hooking up with girls but shane is gay and cant just go hook up with anyone bc it could cost him his entire career. i dont think its unrealistic, theyre just in a scary situation and try to stay away from each other as much as they can even tho they dont want to. they know theyre safe with each other cause they know the other person isnt gonna tell anyone.

snallahej

“BACKSHOTS in 4K!” living rent free in my head for the week, and I’m perfectly fine with that.

sirius

Oh yeah!

M

Their acting is crazy. Connor as Ilya especially is ridiculous. Awards needed

G S

Thanks, @Jenni !

G S

I hope Bradam react to Elite and/or Olympo!

G S

WRIGGLY 😂

WE DIDN’T EVEN KISS 💔💔💔

Starter_guy

It is quite something to see how they develop. Having the starting scenes being Rosanov trying to get Hollander talking again after Las Vegas. We had Shane slowly lowering his defences, the cute moments with the chain biting, hoodie string and then the incredibly intimate time at Shane's and his reactions to Ilya definately show he has caught feelings beyond just hookups. We see Shane after looking content / a little bashful. After we have the Olympics and his concern for Ilya and after a long stretch where he is essentially ignored, he probably felt used / abandoned. We see Ilya win the cup and the conflict with Hollander, the quivering lip teary eyes. I think he gets overwhelmed, his feelings for Ilya, jealousy of a rival winning, sadness at being ignored but i think it ends on pride and then happiness for Ilya. Then the bathroom breakdown, he looked so upset at being ignored. I really hope Ilya has a good reason as it makes my heart break as I definately think for Shane it is becoming something more and he is struggling with the feelings. Whereas Ilya seems to just shut down / try to create distance while Shane has to dwell on it. Honestly agree with Bradley and would be fully sobbing if this was me 😅

Steph de Miranda

Dementia can make people incredibly mean and paranoid. I've been through this with a family member, I recognize that pain.

Starter_guy

After that kiss the Shane did on Ilyas head when he said was it worth the wait i assumed he had it down bad for Ilya 😭😭😭 i would be a mess

Jago BC

I'm dying waiting on your E3 reaction...!

Carey

Came here to say that! It's important :)

Grace

I think at this point they’re both still trying to lie to themselves that it’s purely physical but they’re clearly falling for each other.

Leo Grace

SAME i cant wait!!

Cyndy Delone

In the show that is Shane's apartment, it's changed from the book.

Carey

Omg I didn’t even notice!!

AmandaO

You need to rewatch it since HBO fixed the lighting!

Grace

A few notes for non-book readers. Do not read this if you do not want insight into Ilya and Shane. Just trying to give more context/clarity to anyone as obsessed as I am as we move into the 2nd half of HR. Happy (almost) Episode 4! 1. Svetlana (in the series) is on old childhood friend he occasionally hooks up with. It’s not serious. Ilya never gets serious with anyone else. He sleeps around because they’re young and not committed. He uses sex as a coping mechanism which he discusses in book 2 with his therapist. He’s different than Shane in that he’s bi so it’s easier for him to have casual flings with women. Shane is gay-gay. As Ilya says at one point. :) In the books Shane only has two other sexual experiences with men that were casual and not meaningful. And all of Shane's sexual experiences with women were not great. 2. I've seen a few people on-line call this porn and frankly that pisses me off. The books are smutty romance novels yes but their story is also a really beautiful love story. Largely told by their sexual encounters due to the nature of their relationship/rivalry/sexuality/age/walls. The sex scenes are ripped directly from the books and are actually meaningful to their love story and integral to the plot. I think they're beautiful and hot. We've seen enough straight boring sex to last us a lifetime. And I don’t see anyone calling that shit porn. :) 3. You have to also take into context the age and time they meet. They initially meet at 17 in 2008 and then spend 8 years pining, yearning, not saying how they really feel. NO ONE knows so they can’t even discuss it with anyone. They both spend a lot of time resisting it. The boundaries they are keeping off the ice is their immature attempt to keep this relationship purely sexual. In the books it’s an unspoken mutual rule. Ilya is not a fuck boy like some non-book readers are wrongly assuming. It’s their way to try and keep any feelings at bay because they both know their situation is impossible. 4. Ilya is a very generous lover. He would NOT have left Shane in that first hook up scene. As I have seen some people online wrongly assume. You can hopefully tell by now that is Ilya’s sense of humor. His love language is teasing and fucking with Shane. Competition is always a part of their dynamic and eventually a slight sub/dom relationship. 5. And the sex does not die down. I saw someone comment 'Oh I'm sure this is all we get then nothing after EP 1'. Um nope. LOL. It only increases in the series as their relationship grows and love deepens. So buckle up. You haven’t seen shit yet. The books are WAY DIRTIER and way more graphic and detailed. Jacob promised 3 sex scenes an episode and ALL of the key sex scenes from the books. Now that we see what great hands we're in with Connor/Hudson and Jacob's direction. I can't wait. Trust me. Have your fans out for the cottage episode. Dear god. The internet will explode. 6. People aren't wrong in that the first time they have sex it is more tender and intimate. Jacob made a really good change from book to series in that they sleep together pretty quickly in the books. He changes that in the series to spending 2 years texting leading up to their first time. Which only builds the sexual tension and yearning. By the time they sleep together in the series there are real feelings there. They’re both just hiding it in different ways. 7. The Vegas bathroom and hotel scenes and non-book readers not seeing Ilya's POV. Rachel wrote a POV of Ilya’s side. Read it sometime for full context. But dude was in PAIN. He was masking a lot in those scenes. He was just as scared, upset, and in love as Shane. That was just the start of their push and pull we see for years until they can both just admit to themselves and each other that they are madly in love. Aside from that the way Connor/Hudson acted their asses off in that bathroom scene made it feel way more heart wrenching than when you're just reading it on the page. It's become one of my favorite scenes from the series so far. P.S Oh and a few side notes. 1. This week we’re about to get jealous Ilya over Rose. And a few other firsts I won't spoil. It’s going to be painful but I CANT WAIT. 2. As a book reader this next half of the series is so fucking exciting. We know what's coming. This is at its core a deep love story that spans over a decade across 2 books. We're about to get all that comes with that. Just add super hot sex.

Rebel Pilot

well thx for the spoilers? only read your first point and you launch into book 2 and several plotpoints. Its spoilers. All of that. Especially in this genre were the discovery of the characters motivations and inner workings is the main draw. Romance isnt flashy and huge world twists. its the small stuff between them. Or About them. So you saying all that is a huge spoiler. (pls read this in a non aggressive tone... just to clarify) In general I see book readers jumping in so much when they need to let the show tell its story. We will get to see more of Ilyas emotional mindscape I am sure but its the discovery over time that will do that. Its part of the tension that we dont know these characters yet. And you put in spoilers for a book that is AT the end of all of the Novels. (as I have seen Ilya and shanes 2nd book is the last one) Edit: I want to touch on one point about the spice/smut of the show and how people downgrade it for that. It shows a lot of what we as societies value. Lets compare that to Game of thrones. A huge hit in mainstream. you see people beheaded dismembered burned, There is sex but a lot of it is non consensual and violence. Lets see to horror or action films were people are mowed down by the dozens in brutal gory ways. (Saw, John Wick, Walkin Dead etc.) all things we as society accept for 18+ year olds and then its edgy real. or just fun entertainment. Compare that to this show where the edge comes from these intense intimate scenes. Who were explicitly made with a lot of consent woven into (like so effortlessly it made it super sexy without feeling off!) Sex is so much more beautiful than the gore and violence, yet we treat it as sth to be not shown or as sth that makes a show less. And yes as you said this show uses all of its sex scenes to tell us more about these characters. In an interview Jacob Tierney the director said he did not want to go the routeof netflix and make sure everyone got everything even if you look at your phone once. Nope you got to lock in and pay attention in this show. The actors (all four for me considering ep 3) are doing an excellent job to convey their feelings on their faces.

Grace

I didn't give away plot points. Only giving context. You don't have to read my post if you don't want insight into Ilya and Shane. Happy viewing!

JessieC

Rebel-- I agree. There are far more graphic things that should make us much more uncomfortable than depictions of consensual sex. It's also true, though, that it's more socially acceptable to watch graphic violence than sex scenes that are this detailed. Honestly, they show not a lot while showing a lot, and that in itself is a weird thing to wrap your mind around. I admit that the way they handle the sex scenes throws me off. They're absolutely part of the plot, and not there just for the smut. I think just as you said, we're forced to focus on the entire show, even if it makes us uncomfortable, and maybe they're trying to make us face that discomfort. There are no vague camera angles; it's unavoidable. There are important details about their relationship, personalities, and experiences in every scene with them-- maybe even especially the sex scenes. The writing and filming makes it impossible to pretend we're not impacted by them. I do find it kind of funny though, because all of this makes it kind of an awkward show to react to in the format of something like YouTube and Patreon.

I should be writing

Gotta love how this is such a slow-burn romance with so much yearning and pining. But they've also been fucking the whole time. I really really like how the story continues once we learn more about these two and their reasons for keeping this to clandestine hookups even though they clearly both caught feelings almost right away. Thanks for the great video!

Henry Riley

Just wait till episode 3 🥹

Blake Rogers

Scott and Shane are only on a team together for an all stars match. Scott is on a New York team and Shane Montreal. I noticed you commented on them being on different teams for the Olympics.

IAmom

Rewatching (again) - can someone explain the hockey seasons? I am pretty sure I read somewhere that when it says Winter 12 it is late 11 early 12 and then Winter 13 would be late 12 early 13? I don't think time passes that fast - In this episode we go from Summer 11 to Fall 11 to Winter 12 - then from Spring 12 to Fall 12 to Winter 13 to Spring 13 to Fall 13 to Winter 14. Sorry if this is confusing :0)

Macie

btw when ilya wins the cup he says “for you mom”! i wish they would’ve included it in the subs

LiliaC

I understand Winter as November-February 🤷🏻‍♀️ Then Spring, Summer, Fall, etc. They are covering about 2 years in this episode.

sirius

I think he says for you mama or something in russian but yess🥹

sirius

Possible spoilers? Idk what counts as a spoiler so If I talk about anything that has not directly been in the first episodes, I'll put a warning <33 . . . . . . . . . It's ofc sad that Ilya's father has dementia but that bastard was mean way before having it, just saying😅 That man deserves all the hate

Timmy Gee

Can you guys read out the their texts In videos in the future - it's hard to see in your vids :(

Lauren

I know you guys are way past this but I can’t wait to watch the episode 4 reaction. 🤣 Also please don’t listen to the audio books. The guy doing them is horrible. (I’m not trying to be mean. It’s awful. 😢)

Celila

i so hope they'll record a new version with the actors 😭 can you imagine??

Marry

i didn’t know that!!! omg!!!

TheWhiteQuill

So we’ve had the cottage and ep 5… and I for one am glad they didn’t go as graphic in those. Not because I disliked the earlier sex scenes, they’re are amazing..but because it shows the progression of the relationship into something more romantic, when you don’t have the internal dialogue to play off. I like that the more intense sex scenes were the first four episodes. Doing it this way translates better on screen.

joshua

It took me a couple watches to realize Shane is not stroking he is fingering when Lyla is in the cuck chair and it made it hotter for me lmao

Olha77

his russian is just so good, almost no aksent

Jasmine Garner

You don’t like his narration with Yuna being southern and Rose having weird vocal fry.

Inna Kajaste

yea Rose's voice was the worst :(

Meghan

We are ALL unwell 😭😂😂🥵

Franky

the way shane look at ilya in the bathroom is heartbreaking .... but in the room, i believe Ilya is sure to have the uppr hand but Shane, oh shane, when he said "i need you", is Ilys's turn to struggle to resist him.

G S

I'm rewatching this for the third time now, which means I can appreciate some quippy background things that I may have missed in previous viewings. For example, the interaction between you two over the phrase "playing touching diddleys" needs to be put into some kind of edit. I fully died. 😂😂

happynatii

Got a sub just to watch this lol

Lulu

Acknowledgement of the power that bottoms truly hold 🫡

Lulu

Only regional and formal/informal differences! I love that they invested in the proper linguistic coaching rather than allowing it to slowly disappear through the series. Yes his English gets better, but to have Russian speakers hear it and think “oh this is an American child of two Russian speakers” is still such a compliment to the effort and work put in 👏

Lulu

It’s probably hard to focus in on every single time as a content creator, if you can afford any level of Patreon here I’d hope that you could find alternate means to watch the source material. Even scene by scene on YouTube can show them in a way you can pause and read. ❤️

Lulu

I cried when I realized this, I’d just finished the show and it broke my heart seeing Shane probably understand mama in Russian. And not being able to be openly proud of him.

Scott Ford

Thanks for fixing the subtitles issue.

Magical Adorabella

Ilya is going through a lot but don’t take it out on Shane. Shane has feelings for Ilya, it’s obvious.🏳️‍🌈🥺

Isak

This episode hurt my feelings. Episode 4 is out in Norway today, and I'm scared to watch it.

Lizzie

I listened to about 60 seconds of the audiobook and said NOPE. 😅

james

Fill us in once you are done. It is good but ramps the tension up for sure!

Kitty Betham

Hi - Love your channel - Vegas Bathroom scene/hotel room are my favorite - A couple of points from my POV. Bathroom - they both are very angry - Ilya due to family/Shane from being ghosted. BUT there is a trust between them that they can be angry with each other - it's fragile but it's there. Shane is baby girl - the way he melts when Ilya grabs his chin. [These 2 are the absolute best kissers I have ever watched - yes Adam, kissing is just so sensual. they make me melt] in the bedroom I wanted to comment about the briefs. to me, if Ilya sniffed them that would show attachment/affection to Shane. he dropped them as a form of dismissal to Shane. He was still taking out his frustration regarding his life. Unfortunately Shane is his target - again because he trusts him. Shane has still not picked up on Ilya's trigger points yet - he will eventually but until then- kings of miscommunication. I watched series first and then read the books - highly recommend you. Book club anyone?

Kitty Betham

Another point thatbis forgotten is that they met at age 17/18. They’re boys. Shane is still figuring out his sexuality. And while Ilya might know who he is, he is dealing with maybe first time deeper feelings for someone (those freckles 😘) that is why Scott/Kip story is good contrast to them.

Aaron Bland

I need you to be aware that "playin', touchin', little diddlies" has become such a vocal stim for me, it WILL end up getting me in trouble!

Gina Kern

Sh*t now I need to read the book…
