As some had noticed there was probably a tiny bit too much bass for the indoor modes right now and indoor+ was too harsh as I had forgotten to add another filter. I have corrected for this now and should expect a new firmware with these issues already fixed within the next days so I can update the provided firmware file.

I wanted studio mode to be as close to neutral as possible therefore I went out to do some further measurements together with the KH80 pair and in the graph you can see that below 120hz I was about 0.5dB above the KH80 which are showed in black here, blue is the current custom studio mode. Keep in mind this is just a single measurement done with a sine sweep to capture the bass properly, there are some deviations in the area of 2-5khz visible here, which don't show up indoors and with averaged measurements, that's why it's so tricky to tune a speaker properly just relying on some single measurements and may also have been the reason why I had less energy in this area with my original tuning.

Hey Oluv, as always thanks for your effort. I do believe that Studio mode has to be as close to neutral as possible, with the KH80 as your best reference. Hopefully you can achieve a satisfying result, and looking forward for the corrections on the Indoor modes.

Hëllo, after installing the new firmware I have the same observations, the treble is slightly sharper and clearer, the bass is more emphasized. If after the improved corrections the treble is more velvety and the mids are sufficiently represented, it will be TOP. Even now I like the overall sound more than with the original settings. Thank you very much for your work.

Silent

i find studio mode a tad brighter than neutral, but it's very close!

There is some sample variation. I have 5 speakers now and they all differ like 3-4dB in the treble region which of course is sad, but I cannot do anything about that. What I will try is to achieve a better average for the next firmware maybe even adding a 6th unit.

I start to thinking my unit might be the quite old one, I bought it at October and do not think the new firmware suit my unit, every modes now sound really sharp and thin, the studio might and BoomxXX might be the only two that not sounded sharp to me.

Oluv do you know if the new firmware can be installed using a M2 MacBook running Parallels Desktop Windows 11? So far when I connect the cables the Media Tool does not detect the speaker. Unfortunately dual boot is not available for M2 MacBook.

oluvsgadgets

actually the original firmware has more treble boost, the new one more bass, so you seem to be hearing some contrary.

oluvsgadgets

Are you sure you are using a usb cable with data connection? Unfortunately I have no clue if it would work over parallels properly, that’s why I still got an intel MacBook instead to have a full windows option if needed

oluvsgadgets

It’s rather frustrating. My very first unit differs most from the others, the next 2 I got are pretty similar, the 4th one differs mostly in the 3khz region the 5th I just got the other day has least treble compared to the others, therefore I am thinking of getting a 6th one to have 5 production units which hopefully will represent the variation even better. My original pre production unit sounds worst with the new firmware, the others definitely improved although the last one is noticeably darker.

Rory

I was using an Apple USB-C cable and a Thunderbolt cable. I’ll pick up a new one and let you know

oluvsgadgets

Try seeking for usb cable with data connection

Recently I been using the UboomX in the quite close distance(50 cm) and mostly with studio or indoor, last two nights when I listen to the new version in same position it just felt either vocal hide behind or too sharp depending on the volume and I couldn't find the sweet spot. I will try to listen to it at living room, maybe compared to my second unit with the old firmware.

oluvsgadgets

At close distance you get a 3khz boost. The sound will change a lot depending on the distance and also angle.

Message to everyone: I don't know how it works on iOS (I don't use it), but on Android, each manufacturer — Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, etc. — by default enables some kind of nonsense for BT audio signal processing. For example, OnePlus turns on Dolby Atmos, Xiaomi does too, I think, and Samsung enables some kind of additional audio processing. So make sure everything is turned off, because no matter how well Oluv tunes the sound, with these gimmicks on, the sound ends up being — in the best case — like some loudness boost is turned on, and in the worst case (based on what I've heard on Xiaomi) it becomes completely unrecognizable :)

I found one big problem. Oluv's firmware, when connected via Bluetooth, works using the SBC codec, and there is no longer an option to select AAC. With the original firmware v0.46, it immediately switches to AAC. Could it be that some checkbox wasn't enabled during compilation? How is it for others with Android phones – which codec does it show?

PW

I'm using a Pixel 7 and it defaults to AAC if I have HD audio on in Developer Options. When I select the Bluetooth Audio Codec while HD Audio is enabled, I can toggle between AAC and SBC codecs

Jeff

@PW Same for me, no issue with AAC default on Samsung S23+

Raelin Trenta

Using a Galaxy A36, it defaults to AAC for me.

Gintautas Gečas

Very interesting — my OnePlus 11 only uses SBC and doesn’t offer any other options. With the original firmware on the Uboom X, it used AAC. So it looks like the problem is with my phone :) I’ll try connecting it to a different one.

So I put my two UboomXs with different firmwares and test them out in the living room, Quick impression: Once I put two speakers(one original one new firmware) close to each other, I immediately felt the differences. Yeah I definitely prefer the new firmware more, the vocal is more presented, there are maybe some of the part being too sparkling( the new studio is totally fine, but the indoor and especially indoor+, just not sure where is the problem), yet I am sure all three of the indoor modes is better that the old one. In the past I always tend to listen to the studio mode since i just don't think indoor and indoor+ is that great, and when I compared new firmware and old firmware the old studio is the one IMO being the closest one, the reason might be that it lack mid but at least it don't have extreme bass and treble. I am really excited the firmware can be improved more, and can't wait for the TWS edition.

oluvsgadgets

Actually treble is reduced for the custom firmware compared to the original one

Roman

Yes, but I meant your firmware 0.39 (0.41) vs. the latest 0.48. I also have one of the first units, so that may also have an effect on the sound character. Some of the first Uboom L units also have a different sound than the current ones. Earfun is probably optimizing (improving) individual speaker components. The newer ones simply have better treble with the same firmware.

oluvsgadgets

As far as I know there was just a single production run of maybe 5000 units, if there are differences that’s just sample variation. I highly doubt they improved anything afterwards . I suggested some improvements for the next batch but there won’t be any.
