This time we will listen to the searius in our living room, where I usually demo all speakers so this should give you a better idea about the real performance. After further listening side by side with the Helsinki I decided to adjust treble afterwards for some additional clarity and match it closer to the Helsinki which also improved off-axis performance. I think it sounds more coherent now.

Keep in mind that in reality the actual listening levels are lower than demonstrated in this video. As my voice appears much louder due to the proximity of the microphones in my ears, the speakers seem to play at a lower level than in real life. If you turn the Uboom X to exactly half volume with indoor mode it should give you a good idea of the real levels played here.

My original DOSS Soundbox XL definitely sounded better than the replacement they sent me on warranty. Also, Indoor+ would have sounded more comparable than just plain Indoor mode on the Uboom X. Still, pretty impressive for such a little speaker without dynamic EQ!

oluvsgadgets

Indoor+ has lower bass and treble boosted, indoor should be more neutral.

Josh Barrie

That may be, but Indoor+ also has more sparkle and that wider soundstage/stereo dispersion. I always preferred it, as regular Indoor mode just sounded so plain and uninspired comparatively.

The only "bad" thing I could hear was that against the Flip 6, female vocals sounded quite covered. Otherwise it fared really well against the other speakers.

Quite impressive work so far. Congratulations. I'm looking forward to order one or two units a soon as possible.

Boosting the treble more than what was shown in this video sounds like a good idea actually because Helsinki still had that extreme clarity effect while being transparent enough, just please don't overdo the upper treble and keep this transition from mids to treble smooth like here. But it might be too much bass and treble in tws use case for example so I would really like if two modes could be implemented, this "allround" setting and "studio" or "tws" which could be closer to Neumanns and ment for 2 speakers or just a completely neutral setting for on axis use so you wouldn't need to compromise as much. Performance on higher levels is already good now (maby slightly increasing 100-200hz region is possible when close to maximum if 80-100 doesn't work?) and sounds much more serious than the Flip 6, again this deep bass is the real deal here, something truly unique for this size especially when combined with such a natural sound. Maby it won't move as much when all of the components are inside because it will be much heavier... Regarding the name and logo, I actually like the Searius and especially that star, maby make the star logo 8-pointed or something and silver colored because Sirius A is blue-white colored irl to make it signify the theme of the speaker where honesty of the sound is such a priority that even the logo is realistic to some degree... and ofc shiniest star with the shiniest sound Also, all of this is so interesting to me that I'm enjoying this hour long video so keep it up and good luck with further refinements

Wow Oluv, this is fantastic! The speaker is very good and the bass is so full. I am really impressed with the level it can go down to at 45 Hz. Please, could you include the Xiaomi Sound Party for a future test comparison?

oluvsgadgets

I am worried about the bass in final units but the other sample that broke had everything inside and a very similar bass response. It just didn’t play as clean. I will check everything once I get further samples. I readjusted the sound and made the response more neutral with a treble boost that is still less than the Helsinki but allows for off-axis listening to be more neutral now. I am pretty satisfied now as I also managed to thicken up bass and improve high levels even more.

oluvsgadgets

I dont have it anymore as it was too boomy and too large for my liking

Richard

i highly suggest you get 2 for 1 ear and 2 for the other and another pair for the guest bathroom.

Richard

TLDR: i think "his" living room is not the best listening situation for this speaker, when being recorded. it sounds covered because, in comparison, the flip is boosted in upper mids . and the video compresses the frequency response quite ab it as usual. also i figured the HRTF asmr setup of his microphones, tend to catch the droning of the room, instead of a direct bass of the speaker of what you'd typically experience reallife. i suspect there is a middleground though that could be fixed with a "sweeter mode". the vifa helsinki also tends to shout louder because it's simply boosted. another case may be, since the speaker plays down to 45hz, it could simply be an acoustic depth issue with the microphones having issues retrieving the "gap" between both woofers where it sounds correct again IRL.

Richard

let's not forget that different rooms promote different reflectionpoints and roommodes, that can boost or lower specific frequency areas. there is no way a speaker can always sound perfect by default, since it also needs adjustments to the listening room. there is no most reliable way to get a good measure, but to average to each condition/location or do manual labor.

Richard

Oluv I'd suggest to test the speakers in a different location. the livingroom is not doing your recording a favor i think.. the bass drones into the room and doesn't give the right impression of what the ears would typically experience i think. Maybe it's time for a pool setup again? i remember it sounding quite good from the old videos.

Richard

i suspect the xiaomi soundspeaker will sound less refined in the hi frequency spectrum and bloated in the lowed mids. it sounds very similiar to a jbl fip 6 gg with some flaws.

Richard

in terms of judgement from what i could gather, the searious speaker could need a "shouty sweetness" mode to the uppermids so it gets a tiny bit more comparable to the vifa helsinki. looking at the comments, i think this is what most people are looking for in this comparison since the "female voice" not sounding forward enough against the jbl, was a complaint

Pienso que el sonido debería ser limpio y apenas agregarles algunos matrices para q no pierda la fidelidad del sonido original. Saludos desde Perú

That looks like a great product. I would personally think if it had one extra setting for an indoor+ even if it meant it couldn't play as loud or as deep, that the speaker would be more versatile and appeal to a broader market. I thought that was one of the most innovative best features of the uboom x, that people of all tastes could experience a high quality tune and not just an eq setting as we all know you can do a much better job that any of us.

John

Also what could be very exciting is if this speaker can be a success for you and hope for one day a larger version. Slightly bigger than the boom 2, slightly smaller than the JBL xtreme and have the similar sound profiles as the uboom x. I would imagine that could be a game changer if you could have say on the driver choices and amp/DSP chipsets.

oluvsgadgets

It’s somewhere around 5khz but the woofer plays higher, I had to fool around to avoid any broader gap neither any bump off axis.

J

My personal opinion, I don't really care about off axis performance. I would love the sound to be amazing when listening to it from front, as I think thats what these small speakers are good at and mostly made for. If I want a omnidirectional great performance I would buy some minirig or something you know?

oluvsgadgets

And you think the Minirig will perform better? I think I showed how both performed in a previous video

J

But it could sound even better on axis when not taking off axis into account, that was my point. Not which sounds better now

oluvsgadgets

Actually no, as the performance off axis affects how it sounds an axis as well at least to some degree. If you have issues off axis on axis wont sound good either, simply as the speaker projects the sound into the room which affects the overall perceived sound.

. fankyy

I think he meant that if treble gets boosted too much to compensate for off axis listening, it will be too much at on axis listening for some

oluvsgadgets

It’s still less than the Helsinki with boosted mode, you can check the KEF which has treble rather flat if it’s too much

. fankyy

I mean the helsinki sounds impressively clean and resolving at lower volumes, but I probably couldn't listen to that at higher volumes on axis. You found a good middleground with the tuning as presented here, I don't mind a little 12-14k sparkle, so it's quite perfect without further boosting. The KEF Muo definitely is a joke in terms of bass performance and the price they ask for this mice concert..

. fankyy

Since it lacks dynamic EQ, it would still be worth considering adding 2 or 3 modes: one for lower level and/or off axis listening with the slight boosted treble some mentioned, while maybe even trying to squeeze out even more or lower bass (since it's not meant to be pushed in that mode). Then your perfected default tuning as the middle ground, and then one mode with flat treble or overall soft tuning, for longer listening at higher vol. on axis without fatigue, while still keeping the same bass of your default

J

Indeed! And limit the deeper mode in loudness to prevent distortion or breaking the speaker.

. fankyy

I liked the DOSS for its rather unaltered bass response, it was quite easy to get lower bass out of it, without having to fight against the typical DSP (or passive radiator) massive upper or midbass boost all the mainstream speakers have in that size. Of course it has it limits and always needed 3rd party PEQ to really shine, but for the price it was quite something, when used in a corner. Unfortunately the later units got continouisly worse and battery depletion was an issue. But other than that, this speaker would've been amazing price performance if we ever had DSP access to it

Josh Barrie

The OG Soundbox XL was freaking amazing! It had such clarity and played very deep. The issue was, my original would literally walk itself off the counter/surface and fall into the floor (due to inadequate feet/surface area + bass)! After a few of those drops, it ended up breaking the charging port so I could no longer charge it. They agreed to send me a replacement under warranty, and the new one was different (built better, no rattling parts/frame, softer touch buttons, more secure feet, different charger and barrel, etc) -- but it sounded completely different in a bad way. It lost the deep bass and clear highs, increased midrange muddiness, just much more muffled and less dynamic without extending as deep. I was severely disappointed...

Ricardo

The Vifa is just incredible, yes its much bigger, yet, the clarity and separation is very noticeble, yet Searius is so impressive specially for its size, defenatly better than all the rest and in my opinion the Vifa should the gold standard reference for your tunning

oluvsgadgets

With my latest settings they should be much closer although I havent boosted treble as much

Ricardo

Searius is very nice and impressive, top 3 for sure on its category, but I have to say, Vifa Helsinky tuning is so perfect to my taste, also, you can hear that is a high quality speaker. The sound of the instruments and voice come out as if its playng live next you... sometimes is not just a matter of tunnig or boosted treble, sometimes is the quality and capability of the speaker to reproduce the sound of the instruments as if they are being hit right next to you.. Also the fact that is a 10 plus year speaker
