Hello, and happy Friday to you! It's Dailies Day, my friends.

Last Saturday, Baley, Amanda, Karli, and I spent the day in Frederick, hitting H Mart, JoAnn Fabric (RIP), my go-to antique store, and the Common Market. We found a treasure trove of delicacies at H Mart, among them...

Just goes to show you that the AI overview sometimes neglects to include the MOST DRAMATIC potential medical side effects.

(We all checked in the next day, no one's nipples exploded.)

Luke and I went for a skate-walk together the other day and bumped into:

AND I DID.

When I started renting this house, I had the mindset that it wouldn't last forever. I'd leave when when I found something better (I didn't, and probably never will!), or whenever the owners kicked me out. But a few years ago, something in me shifted - probably when I started gardening - and I began to let myself see it as MY home. I knew that was a dangerous idea, but it was tasty.

It's probably for the best that I'm back to my old "who-knows-how-long" tenant mindset, but feeling settled sure was nice while it lasted. I guess it's an appropriate era to feel unsettled in, anyway. (The usual "gestures everywhere" gesture.) Here's the original art for this one!

Speaking of unsettling, I saw this from my kitchen window...

THIS HAPPENED AGAIN FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF YESTERDAY?!

Honestly, who's crazier, the woman who is spending hours of her life pleasantly flitting the pages of a big softcover book across her fingertips, or me, the person staring at her through the window, seething, drawing a whole comic about spying on her?

Anyway, here's the original, in case you found something relatable about this comic and want it!

My neighbor Joanie is organizing a Pride Parade in Shepherdstown (June 1st if you're nearby and wanna come!). She asked me to come over the other day to discuss an idea she had.

I thought we could all benefit from hearing that.

Joanie's backyard is usually filled to the brim with rainbow flags (she was good friends with Gilbert Baker). The original for this comic got a tedious colored pencil treatment! I'm going to see if Joanie herself would like the original before I offer it up for sale.

We stayed there for HOURS in the sunshine with local pals. Totally worth it!! (I worked on the stickers all day yesterday to make up for it. Tell ya about that later.) Here's the original!

Everyone's talking about the Economic Blackout Day we're having here in the States today, so I wanted to write something that parallels that. The intentions of the blackout are a bit vague, but I believe it's meant to generally "stick it to" the billionaires, the large corporations.

If I may offer an alternative to spending ZERO money, I recommend you spend money at a local, non-chain store today. And use cash! Here's a comic about local stores AND cash, before I continue to bend your ear about it:

All caramels are GOOD caramels, but the ones at Dogwood General are THE BEST CARAMELS.

Before I go on, here's the original for this comic! As always, remember to use the coupon code DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for your thank-you-for-being-a-patron 50% off!

Okay, last bit about using cash and shopping local: this economic blackout thing will affect big businesses, but only for a day. If you'd like to join me in making a lasting impact, go out to a small brick-and-mortar (NOT a large chain), and pick something that can replace a corporate/Amazon purchase that you make regularly. Replace your regular fast food indulgence with a taco from the local taco stand. Buy handmade soap from a small gift shop. Buy one big piece of meat from a local butcher. It'll be more expensive! But you're putting that money back into your zip code, and helping a small shop near you stay in business.

(Hot tip, btw: I've been buying my eggs for $5 a dozen from local farmers for years. Unlike factory farms, they haven't raised their egg prices recently, because they haven't been affected by the bird flu. So if you don't want to pay $8 a dozen at the grocery store, hit up a local farmer and ask how much their eggs are. Then, consider buying eggs from them from now on - work it into your budget if you're able.)

I may go on about this in a future comic - I have a lot of opinions and suggestions to give on the topic of small business support and cutting yourself free from paying corporations to remain on top! But I'll try not to overwhelm you. (Also I hope you already know that this is a privileged take - if you can't afford to lose your grasp on lowest-price corporate goods, I hear you! But if you can, please do.)

The longer-form comic I started with last week's dailies is still in progress, by the way. Surprising no one, it's about gender. You'll see it when it's done, but it may take awhile to finish - I have more thoughts on the topic than I thought I could fit into these tiny pages. Also surprising no one!

Anyway, happy Spend Money At Your Local Non-Chain Shop Day! And if you have nice weather coming your way, I hope you'll spend some of it in the sunshine. MECK GARDEN MECK GARDEN MECK GARDENNNN

you can avoid the AI overview BS by including the F word in your search, jsyk :)

dcorsetto

THANK YOU!! I hope it works (without giving me weird results) - we tried to turn off the automatic AI and it didn't work!!

Dave Van Domelen

Maybe it was a Choose Your Own Adventure book? :)

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

Aaah I *did* see you at Joann! I didn’t want to intrude/be That Guy, but here’s a belated ohmygosh-hi-and-I-love-your-work!

Pete Jordan

Just a few days off ten years in this rental house; it's *home* damnit, but the owner is liable to die before we do, and we"ll be out… But yes, support local stores. Also local *venues* not owned by fecking TicketGouger!

Rob

Hm, searching for “opticians f*ck” gets a lot of very specialized sites.

Michael Steamweed

The last panel in that 3rd page...yeah, do we need to call in a Book Wellness Check? Check its pages, look for any inappropriate dog-earring, that sort of thing?

dcorsetto

WHAAAAAAT!! Ahaha I wish you would've said hi! I love That Guy, tbh! I hope you found more cool stuff than we did! (I was there for rainbow fabric for the aforementioned pride parade, but they were wiped OUT!!)

dcorsetto

Ha!! That's such a good question! Although each Adventure would have to be like a sentence long; she did NOT linger on a page long!

dcorsetto

Oh WOW. My personal Venn Diagram of the "opticians f*ck" results I just got are two circles a hundred miles away from each other.

Becky Fish

But no AI overview! ;) I think you can use other curse words, but I'm not sure

Kiera Kalleberg

You can also add -ai to the end of the search!

dcorsetto

Oh my god that is SO EASY why didn't I know that, thank you

Amy Crook

we really do need to find a way to stop buying from big corps, but our small town is way more suburban and other than restaurants it's been hard to find non-corporate options that we have time/energy to visit. my new habit is to treat myself once a month to something i've been wanting from an etsy shop or other small business online instead!

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

We found some good fabric but most everything was like “oooh enjoy this whopping 10% discount on stuff you don’t need” so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We live downtown, so odds are good I’ll have another chance to be That Guy someday! 😁

dcorsetto

I hope you dooooo!! (And yeah, same, I promised a great selection of art supplies to my friends and we were like, oh, 10%, womp wommmmp.)

dcorsetto

I think that's a good alternative in your situation! (Hot tip: Etsy has become the opposite of what it used to be - which is why I left it - so if you find something you like on Etsy, it's worth searching to see if the shop has an online storefront NOT on Etsy first. Sometimes I DM an Etsy seller to ask if they sell elsewhere first - luckily Etsy hasn't cracked down on DMs with questions like that, ha!)

At the risk of annoying you with useless spitballing, if you have roommates, perhaps it would be possible to pool your resources, borrow and beg from everyone you know, and make your landlady a rent-to-own or purchase offer, or even to incorporate it as a co-op. I don't know how much the house is valued at but it might be worth exploring very fully what it would take to make it into a forever-home. Would it mean using a spare room for a season arts residency space? Perhaps developing some of the yard with an additional tiny home or multi-use/teaching space? Is there some kind of loan program if you committed to restoring it if it's super old? There's no point in being house-poor or rent-burdened if you can help it, but maybe there's some angle that's worth exploring. My (extremely generous, commie) landlady just passed away recently and while it sounds like we can stay in this (very cheap, frustratingly sub-standard) apartment while her daughter figures out if she really inherits it or whatever, I am not looking forward to finding a new apartment in Seattle.

dcorsetto

I'm open to spitballing! I have considered going in on the house with others. And the original owner - the current owner's late husband - was one one of the original members of European Parliament (!!!) who spent his last days traveling around the UK speaking out against Brexit. So I will definitely bargain with her a bit first! You're right about making the space more of a community-use space, as well - I like that idea and I hadn't considered the added value to the town if I were to do so. Thank you. :) It'd be worth asking other residents about restoration loans, but I've never heard my property manager mention it for the repairs they've done, nor have I heard neighbors mention it. The rent is super, super low compared to the worth of the house and what she could be getting from me, so I've always been itchy about owning the house (and all its silent issues that manifest in 200-year-old plaster falling off the wall, etc.). But I guess now's the time to start asking about that kind of thing. I'm sorry to hear about your newfound purgatory, and the passing of your badass landlady!! We need more of those! Sounds like you're in exactly the position I'll be one of these days, and I don't envy you. Best of luck to you and your roommates, and I hope it works out that you can stay, sub-standard or not! <3

stevievanb

We have at least a year, probably! Maybe we'll qualify for Habitat for Humanity after our second kid is born, but it's a long wait list. You might look into that as well for the long term--most cartoonists can probably qualify.

Tim Pendergast

Stuck at home today, so instead of shopping local I donated to the NH Food Bank.

Blake C

I really want to get a hard copy of that first one to give to my favorite Indian restaurant in town.

I'll second Danielle's comment. A lot of creators and artisans have either left Etsy or have diversified into other markets (e.g., their own online shop) to ensure that they aren't left stranded. Etsy has been changing their policies a lot in the past several years, and sometimes it's detrimental to people selling. They're really trying to compete with Amazon more and more. (Cindy Lou Who on here and on social media often writes about this topic.) I am a supporting member (and buyer-only) at the Artisan Cooperative, which is an Etsy alternative, but there are other groups that have started up to be better to the creators than to the shareholders. -jess

Chris Mac.

One of the things I loved about visiting Shepardstown was that exact feeling like all the money I spent there went back into the store I bought it from in a very real sense. its one of the things that really made me fall in love with the town.

William Cole

Maybe she was doing bibliomancy!

Dirk Bergstrom

I live in Silicon Valley, and around here it's already the Cash-Free Future you've read about. The same $20 sit in my wallet for a couple months at a time. Almost all the farmers at the five different local markets we go to take Venmo and/or tap-to-pay. And many businesses that no longer accept cash -- my regular bakery/coffee joint, part of a five-store local chain, has a "no cash" sign on the door. I mean sure, plenty of places & people are still using cash, but it's no longer a part of my life.

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I'm sad about Joann, even though I haven't actively done cosplay work in some years (and was the only reason I went, haha... just hate losing a source) I don't think single-day boycotts work, since that basically says, "take a day off between busier days before/after the day of the boycott" and also, as WEB BROWSERS are showing, it's incredibly difficult to find anything free of problematic things, since even things that start out good suddenly get turned around on a dime when That One Guy steps in and ruins everything. (That One Guy is increasingly ACTUALLY one guy, which is pissing me off, but I literally can't do too much else to boycott him.) I did at least follow the spirit of the boycott, since our single planned expense was to get Friday Takeout, and I put in a suggestion for the local family Chinese place (and paid with a $100 bill I'd saved from some physical cash we got as a wedding present back in the day, since I forgot to withdraw anything from the bank). So, can't say I didn't try. I just wish our local farmers' market wasn't a FORTY-FIVE MINUTE DRIVE to the nearest pickup.

Minzoku Bokumetsu

*fact-checks self* oh, ok, looks like there are LOADS of places closer, just that they're "come see what we have" vs. put in an online pickup order also, closing before we wake up on weekends, haha X_X

Minzoku Bokumetsu

meant to comment, if that were me, she would be reading the owner's manual trying to figure out WTF is wrong with something going on in the car

Neighbor Joanie suggested making a comic about gay superheroes so you made one about her. Sounds like she qualifies as a superhero to me!

Andy Ihnatko

Today I observed one of our first signs of Spring: the guy who keeps bees had his "HONEY AND CANDLES" folding sign at the end of his driveway. And I used to buy most of my eggs at local roller derby matches! A very nice blocker on our hometown team kept chickens. I'd IM her the day before and then we'd swap empty egg cartons for full ones (plus cash).

Tanzerine

Glad to see the suggestions for filtering out the AI search answers - basically it just feels to me like another ad I have to scroll through to get the real answers, sheesh. I had a yes-no-yes thing about Friday's blackout day: my neighbor announced she'd be performing at a local venue (yay!) but then I realized I was supposed to not spend any money that day (boo!) but I rationalized it by going anyway --local talent AND locally-owned business -- and paying with cash. Yay!

Ursus Ridens

Thanks for the helpful words, stevieanb. And sorry for your predicament. A few years ago a longtime Seattleite friend had to abandon that town because housing costs were rising too fast for a widower on fixed income. (He often referred to "Our Amazon overlords." as the main cause.) He went back to Chicago where he'd lived for a while when younger and where, he said, he got twice the space at a third of the cost from a friendly (commie) landlord. My friend's gone now, alas. (But he liked Chicago.) Keep looking and keep coming up with those ideas! 'cause there are all those _below_ median-rent places, after all, and the PNW is, ahem, God's Country.

Ursus Ridens

MECK GARDEN ?? I can easily understand the MECK part, but the snow is just now melting here in New England*, so no garden yet. Grrr. *I was going to call it "Niflheim" -- you know, the land of the Frost Giants. But that actually starts somewhere in upstate New York.

dcorsetto

You know I love this. :) (And you felt correctly!)

Theadora

Looking for the "good" ending? ;-)
