Look, coming up with a new title for each of these posts is a chore, you're gonna get a few dad joke titles in there.

We had my pal Annie in last night! And Annie is SUPER thoughtful about her poses - she knows I prefer to get the feet and knees in there because I want the challenge. She knows I LOVE foreshortening (getting it right feels like a magic trick!). And she knows I HATE drawing... backs.

But she knows I need the practice. So, after some 5-minute warmups...

... she gave us... HER BACK.

(The one on the right was my first sketch, which I used as reference later for the values; the little one at the top left was the second one I drew, to be used as guidance for the FORM, because I wanted to exaggerate the pose a bit more.)

I got some pretty good process shots this time! For once, I liked my final sketch better than the earlier practice sketches.

Final scan!

So, here's how I DIDN'T completely fuck up the back this time: I have this little post-it note on my lap board that says "pay attention to the SHAPE of the HIGHLIGHTS," and that note has been there so long it's become as unnoticeable as the brown grain of the board. But, this time, I paid attention to it.

Here are some close-ups for ya.

I was REALLY happy with that foot on the left and the little smidge of blue at the ankle! That felt very right to me for some reason.

The process shots I took miraculously lined up very well, so I made a tiny video of them all together and posted it to my figure drawing Instagram account (yes, this is my go-around for not understanding video file formats, sorry!!). Go give it a look if you wanna see the piece grow before your very eyes!

Oh, and of course, the original's available for sale. Remember to use ARTNERD50 at checkout for your 50% off!

The titles for pretty much all of my photographs are dad jokes.

I love a goodbad dad joke. Also the shoulders are so good on this piece! And that little bit of blue on the ankle really shapes out the bone perfectly, so good.

Is it just me or is anyone else having a hard time looking away from the violet shadows? there’s something so right about them, it’s like they won’t let go of my eyes. 👀

i really love how these turn out. Is it hard to get nude models where you're at?

Luckily we've got a good group of 5 or so who are reliable! I think it's trickier to find GOOD models on their first try: a lot of people think it's about being bold enough to be nude in front of a group, or that it's about being "beautiful." Being a *good* model involves staying still for long periods of time, getting back into a pose and suffering through the discomfort, and it's a bonus if they have an artful eye and can come up with poses that are dynamic and interesting to draw! A number of our models are also artists, which helps. :)

I'd assumed it was the former of just finding people willing to be nude in front of other people. We had a few models in a painting i took years ago at community college, but they wore underclothes as we had people not comfortable with nude models. I can't say I've ever thought about being a nude model before, but I think it would be cool in the sense of seeing what people do, like you.
