Happy Friday, earthlings and otherlings! And happy Dailies Day to you all. ☀️

I can't believe this is the first time this has ever happened:

He WAS harmless! Ron was pleased that he got to pretend to be a fireman for a day and save me from my ridiculous situation. Bless you, Ron. (Original art's for sale here!)

You may be asking why there's a lock on the OUTSIDE of my door. Back before I did daily comics, I occasionally made comics that I called "Stuck at 32." Funny enough, the last comic up there explans why I've had to resort to LOCKING the door from the outside every night so that Pip can't get into it. (At least I ditched the chain idea!) He's a genius, which is simultaneously cute and annoying.

Both Karli and Ryan's birthdays were last week! So for Art Night, I baked a cake for both of them. This happens literally every time I bake a birthday cake:

I mean, it always gets done, but you'd think I'd have learned by now! (Here's the original! Use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for your 50% off Patreon discount!)

I didn't take a final photo of the cake but I drew a baby heron on it with icing, because at the last Art Night we talked about how ridiculous baby herons look. Luckily Karli got a good photo before we ate it:

For a good time, look up baby heron photos.

I wrote a two-pager about BAMBOO (peak Danielle content), but it was really wordy and still only covered half of the process, so I'm keeping it out of this comics-plus-commentary feed down here! It's in the image carousel at the top of this page, though, so you can still read it if you want. It's sort of a how-to about harvesting bamboo and turning it into a raised bed for your garden.

Here's the one I made for my peas this week! (These photos kinda pick up where the comic left off.)

(Be sure to line it with packing paper so the soil doesn't fall out through the cracks!)

I love making these things but holy cow they're time-consuming! But, I repeat: I LOVE making these things. Weaving is addicting.

On Wednesday my brother and I had a nice sibling lunch in Frederick! It was gorgeous outside, we got sidewalk seating, I even found street parking right out front of the restaurant! And I got to share some good news about Julie (my new-used car that I got last year, for those just joining us):

Couldn't have not-happened to a nicer guy! (Brent drives all day for his job, so it's better that it happened to me, the stay-at-home cartoonist.)

My brother rules, he was chill and knew just what to do. There's a scrape on one side and the bumper came clean off with the removal of a few screws, so hopefully it'll all be a big inconvenience rather than a heartbreak. (I hunted for MONTHS to get this specific car, I don't want to go through it again!)

Turns out the entire bumper fits perfectly in the back! Poor Julie had to drive all the way home with her ass hanging out like this:

On that note, I need to post this now so I can call back the... adjuster (I had to look at my notes to get that title right, this is all new to me). I hope all of you have a lovely weekend, and none of you has your ass ripped off by a backing-up delivery truck!

I hope you got their license plate and other info so your insurance company can go after them! There's no way they didn't notice it happening. They probably thought you were nowhere nearby.

Dave Van Domelen

At least when a truck tore my bumper off, it was my fault for trying to squeeze between it and a concrete construction barrier. (It stayed just enough on to be zip-tied in place later, and several years later someone backed into the other side in a Totally Their Fault moment and their insurance company covered replacing the entire thing, effectively wiping out evidence of my own stupidity.)

Boum

But what about the truck?? Did they just drive away???

stevievanb

I'd a been like fuck the bubble wrap, Ron, let me out! The paranoid baby-proofer in me wants you to get a two-way latch or lock with a keyhole on the inside so you can free yourself in the event of a house fire, if this room is on the second floor or something. Sorry about your car!

Sarah

The old comic about Pip and the door made me laugh out loud

Allison Matthas

NOT JULIE!!! 😱 Congrats on paying her off though! 🥳 I just paid off mine too!!! Hope it's an easy fix...... The Niro's are scrappy so I'm sure she will be alright!

William Cole

Sorry about Julie's injury! I hope she has a full & speedy recovery. I am also very interested in further Bamboo Lore!

Hugh Eckert

Hope it's an easy and cheap fix!

Laura J Testa-Reyes

Shame about the car. Amazing that so much bamboo grows in your area that there is plenty. I was hearing about a zoo that was trying to source fresh bamboo to feed their giant pandas. Someone could make a good living doing that.

I didn't have space to really get into it in the comic, but the little guy on his phone behind me is the driver; all the info's been collected and the claim's in progress. I honestly feel for the guy; he was young, had never hit a car before, and had only been working for them for 6 months. Turns out there was someone behind him who was being a jerk to him about moving his truck (corroborated by multiple other diners in the restaurant, who went out of their way to tell me about it as I was walking back to the table!). He was so frazzled by her that he didn't see my car while he was trying to park his truck out of the way. Still technically his fault, but he had a pretty terrible day!

dcorsetto

Everything got sorted out! I'm lucky we were sitting right there!

dcorsetto

Hahaha! Yeah, I may need to work out a different solution for the lock.

dcorsetto

Aaayyyy congrats to you, too, Allison! Yeah, it feels good to have her all paid off. Of course, that makes this hurt just a bit more in a nonsensical way!

dcorsetto

Ooooohh you know that's all I need to hear! Thanks William!

dcorsetto

YEAH, part of the rumor about why there's so much up here is that Shepherdstown is situated on the Potomac River, and supposedly when the National Zoo started having pandas on display, they planted bamboo on the Potomac River down there to supply them for food. Some people say it crept right up the banks all the way from DC to West Virginia, buuuuuut I find that to be a bit of a stretch! Either way, I love a good rumor!

Becky Fish

Poor kid, that makes sense! I doubt he'll lose his job over this, btw.

Allison Matthas

It's not nonsensical. You finally didn't have to think about money toward her! And now you do (or hopefully not if the truck driver gave you insurance!). Plus, who doesn't dislike a time wasting set-back.

Ursus Ridens

"For a good time, look up........................baby heron photos." and I did, and I did. Oh my, I really _am_ old now, ain't I? Also, thanks for the bamboo planter instructions. I've lived in places where bamboo is invasive, but I don't see any at all here in New England, alas.

dcorsetto

Oh I hope you're right! He seemed really worried.

dcorsetto

Honestly, the time waste is my biggest fret. I rescheduled my Asheville signing for May 17; let's hope I can drive my own car!

dcorsetto

If it makes you feel any less old, Karli (the one who suggested the baby heron photos) is in her early thirties! She keeps us all young!

Andy Ihnatko

I mean, I totally understand Julie's choice to pin her elective cosmetic procedure on "post-accident reconstructive surgery." I just wish we didn't live in a culture that made ladycars feel self-conscious about their decisions to exercise autonomy over their own body panels.

Kevin Ruderman

Julie is planning to get a BBL! (Blue Bumper Lift)

Michael Steamweed

So sorry about your car! I sympathize...exactly 1 week (to the hour itself) after I bought my current car, someone t-boned me in a parking lot. Fortunately, both vehicles were moving slowly-ish. Other person had no insurance, but mine was fully comprehensive ('cause new car). Got a paid-for rental during the 3-weeks repair time, and the adjuster total was juuuust shy of "totaled".

Tim Pendergast

Sorry about your car, but lucky you to be unfamiliar with insurance adjustors, not that there is anything wrong with them, apart from them being somewhat glum, I just take that to mean you've never had an accident before. Also, I've heard that old bamboo will spout again if used as fencing/stuck in the ground. Not sure if that's true or not!

Lisa

I still think about that comic regularly and am glad to be reminded of it. I had interrupted sleep the past two nights due to one of my cats messing with my things. This reminds me to count my blessings that at least they don't know how to open doors!

Indira

Sucks about your car! When you posted about it on Instagram I was like didn’t you get this one fairly recently? Hopefully she’ll make a full recovery

Clinton Johnston

Yow! What a week!! (Be honest. Was there a moment when you thought, "Well, at least I have eventful dailies this week!")?

Meisterj

That's such unfortunate car luck but glad it's (relatively) minor

David Neale-Lorello

My ex-wife got big into invasive species awareness when we moved to Rockville, MD (a long time ago now) and, if I recall correctly, bamboo was (maybe still is?) just a really popular decorative plant that likes this environment. So, with essentially no competitors or animals that eat it, well, you know the drill... I can't promise that my memory is 100% on that, but that's what I recall and the source was reasonably reliable. It certainly is all over the place in these parts.

Laura J Testa-Reyes

That would make sense, like kudzu, which is also very invasive. Here we have Scotch Broom, highly flammable, though pretty.

Cathi Andrews

Sorry that Julie is in need of some insurance attention, but glad that all happened in your sight and can (hopefully) be sorted fully. I'd love to know how many of us clicked on the carousel specifically to read your Bamboo how-to? Anyway, I reckon you're safe in this crowd to include it in the write-up.

Leslie Carter

Agggh, the cars in our lives! Don't know which is worse, those crunchy accidents, or the games insurance companies play against us :( - I hope it all works out well for you and Julie!
