Happy Friday to ya! I just noticed that most of this week's comics have to do with love.

We had a farewell dinner for my friend Josie the other day. You've met her before (and also here); I wanted to make more comics featuring her this year, but I've only eked out a few because they require so much context, or fact-checking.

Josie is moving to Europe in a month. I'm both sad that she's leaving and relieved she won't be in this country while we ride the wave of gender chaos (among other chaoses). If you'd like to toss a few bucks her way to help her with the move, you can pitch in here! (She's already gotten the surgery mentioned in the Gofundme.) Thank y'all for caring about my friend. <3

It's easy to be sappy with your friends when you know they're leaving, and we said a lot of sappy things to each other on our pre-dinner walk.

I've learned way more about womanhood from her than I have from anyone in my life. (She's a science nerd, so she has to dumb down the technical stuff for me!)

This happened on my way to the farmers market:

Whitney's the only human I know who is so captivating she upstages her own dog.

This is in my wallet now.

This next one is a concept that felt like an epiphany when I realized it a few months ago. A painfully obvious one, but it took me 40 years to figure it out. (Apologies to anyone who doesn't wanna watch me make out with someone; this was a really awkward concept to draw!)

It starts with my favorite romance from Girls With Slingshots.

I was thinking about all the ideal romances I’ve read/seen in fiction over the years, and thought about Clarice and Joshua, and then realized… that’s just one writer writing a romance story. Whenever two characters are completely in sync, it’s because it’s the writer, writing to the writer.

This goes for friendships, too (Hazel & Jamie included). It’s so obvious, I can’t believe I never thought about it before. Whatever you do, don't idealize the almost telepathic communication between fictional characters, because they are LITERALLY inside each other's head: the head of the author.

(Here are links to the two GWS strips this is based on, in case you'd like to relive that moment!)

The original's for sale here if you really wanna sully that sweet memory of Joshua and Clarice kissing with an image of me kissing myself! Remember to scroll down for the half-off Patreon Exclusive discount code!

You're kinda seeing "how the sausage is made" here; I needed to get that comic out of my system before I could manipulate the same concept into something more accessible for the general public:

I'm still working on this concept, but I think this succinct version works. :)

Here's the link to the original if you'd like it!

And, by popular demand*, here's the last step in the How To Make a Bamboo Wattle Fence tutorial!

*all three of you who were interested, ty.

Just like inking a comics page, my favorite part of the process is always too short!

I'm putting all three of these ones up for the price of two, in case you'd like the originals! Don't forget to use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for 50% off, my beloved patrons!

I put together a little photo tutorial of how to make these wattle fences, so if you'd like to see 'em, keep scrolling! If you're like "wow you are REALLY into this and I am NOT," stop right here, and have a beautiful weekend!

HERE WE GO, let's split some bamboo babyyyyy!

I came up with a few different solutions for how to finish the ends of these, all of which were uhhh... adequate.

Really they just needed to be sturdy enough to lean some brown packing paper against (the step I forgot to take photos of!) so that the soil won't seep out between the slats.

Here's the frontmost bed, which will be PACKED with flowers!

And here's the whole garden, nearly naked, so you can compare it in June when it's grown in a bit!

I LOVE sugar snap peas but I only got 3 or 4 plants last year! This year I bought some Johnny's Seeds for the bed on the left, and ALL 40 SEEDS (100%!!) sprouted, which never happens!

Let's hope the slugs don't find out...

Happy weekend to y'all! I hope you find time to get outdoors for a bit.

I snagged the part 2 original at full price because you are worth full price.

William Cole

Apologies to the other two bamboo enthusiasts, but I grabbed the originals of those.

Michael Steamweed

Huh. The romance-author-writing-self-love-story thing makes a sort of sense....

Andy Ihnatko

If that card set takes the position "Wow! As a distinct sociological culture, Dads tell some AWESOME jokes!" then that's fine. If it's piggybacking on the pop-culture trend whereupon somebody feels embarrassed at having laughed at a silly joke and feels the need to deflect that perceived shame and malign an innocent demographic: FOR SHAME. (Said theatrically. Do not actually be ashamed, anybody.) Silly Jokes are a perfectly legit comic genre. One should feel no shame about telling them or laughing at them. Don't drag Dads into this: your mom and cousins and friends tell silly jokes just as frequently. And I BARKED LAUGHING at the Switzerland joke.

Bailey Doolittle

Can we, at some point, get a progress post about your garden's shape and look? You've taken some great pictures over the years, and it would be cool to read about your reflections on the whole project :)

Andy Ihnatko

Lately, I've been reflecting on the value of chores as a mental health tool. It seems as if people in a creative field, especially, need distinct, physical tasks in their workday. Something with a clearly defined mission, a linear, step-by-step process to follow, and a 100% tangible "look at this awesome thing I completed" thing at the end -- a result that can be seen, touched, smelled, etc. I've been trying to incorporate such a thing into every workday. Today's thing was the SPECTACULARLY successful eradication of huge bike grease stains from a bar towel. These things only cost like eighty cents to replace, but thriftiness wasn't the point.

Kevin Ruderman

SHKK! THWAK - I want to do this! Feels like an old Batman TV episode, KAPOW!

Hugh Eckert

Thanks for the dad jokes, now it's time to make my spouse giggle. And the love comics hit me in the feels... <3

M. Newton

Heh, every time I want to buy an original, someone's already snagged it. Danielle, if you did work more on your thoughts on writing romance into a comic or print or something, I'd love it. I've been exploring my own feelings on writing romance lately, so this one really resonated.

dcorsetto

HAHAHAHA you are amazing and I am honored and I'm so glad you got it! <3

dcorsetto

I, too, was tickled by the Swiss joke!! Also Whitney really elevates Dad Joke Culture by being a total babe and cool as shit, and this being her current Thing.

dcorsetto

Ooh tell me more! Are you talking about literal shape progress from back when it started to where it's been the past few years? Or something less literal?

dcorsetto

YES!! This is why I nerd out doing my bookkeeping for taxes. And my house gets MUCH cleaner when I'm busy procrastinating from a creative task that has no "correct" route. (Oooh your clean bar towel task sounds satisfying in that boring kind of way!)

dcorsetto

Ha HA, I thought my comics readers would appreciate the sound effects!

dcorsetto

Oh that's a relief to hear, because it's been on my mind a lot! Thanks for the encouragement. :) (Sorry you didn't snag an original! I hope you get one in the future that ya like!)

Tim Pendergast

I think you nailed why I'm not big on love stories: I'm not falling in love with myself at time soon. ;)

Andy Ihnatko

It TOTALLY was! The towel looked hopeless. But after a six-hour soak in Oxy Clean and a scrubdown with Dawn Liquid using my angriest laundry brush, it emerged from a regular machine cycle looking grateful and eager to return to a spot in the kitchen rotation. I hope the experience reminds me that there are times when I should walk an extra seven feet to fetch the paper towels, even if a kitchen towel is, quote, "right there."

Andy Ihnatko

Honestly, you gotta love anybody who keeps a stack of joke cards handy!

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Actually, the author self-cest part I knew bc whenever I get off—I MEAN YES I KNEW THIS PART FROM THINGS THAT HAPPEN

Bailey Doolittle

No that's literally it! I'd love to see where you started, also because I'm having trouble remembering haha.

Zuzia Oliveira

About second strip - I have a nervous dog and had this vision of anyone greeting me like that and my dog absolutely loosing her mind. She would never stop barking!

Melissa Wilson

Yes! My better half is cut from creative cloth & he really seems to benefit from some well-structured toil with observable results, when he needs to recharge.

Melissa Wilson

Oh, Josie, honey, I hear you… The struggle is real! ***likely TMI warning*** After taking continuous hormones for decades to suppress endometriosis & never having cycles, I finally got approved for a hysterectomy last summer (best thing I ever did for me) & they took me off the pills I’ve been on since I was a teenager. Now left to their own devices, my ovaries are having a field day & boy, the hormonal surges can make for an emotional roller coaster. 🎢😃🥺🤬😭🫨

Yfke

I love your friends 🥰

dcorsetto

<3 I sent this to her, and she said it felt really affirming to have something in common with a cis woman. :) Thank you for sharing this! (And I'm so glad you feel better!! Despite the roller coaster, of course!)

dcorsetto

Hahaha! Yeah luckily Polly is a very chill dog, unless there's a thunderstorm...

Melissa Wilson

Thanks for passing it along! 🥰 It’s affirming for me, too, to know there are other women trying to learn the steps to the interpretive dance, given all the things happening with our hormones. 💃

David Neale-Lorello

The piece starting with Clarice and Joshua reminds me of Jess Fink’s “We Can Fix It!” an equally insightful work and probably my favorite of hers.

Clinton Johnston

Hey, when is "The Secret Project" no longer a secret (and are you still up for returning to Elephant Town when it's out)? (If not, that's cool. It's been awhile, and artistic interests change. )

Boum

Re: the author falling in love with the author. YES, also: most of my characters are like me in some aspect, like I'm going to distribute my quirks and preferences between the main cast, but in The Jellyfish having two of them fall in love was pretty weird in retrospect!! I'm pretty sure I talked about that on a radio show and said "Basically this book is about me falling in love with myself". So, I'm glad I'm not the only weirdo hahaha

Tuspa Mouse

I want to heart each of these individually! I ran across a bamboo wattle fence here in Germany last week and thought "Hey now I know what that is, thanks Danielle!" (Speaking of which, if your friend will be in Germany, or really anywhere in Europe, I'm happy to be a resource for her as a fellow American expat)

dcorsetto

Ahh that's exciting that you saw one in the wild!! And thank you, she's moving to Hamburg and I really appreciate that! <3 Luckily she does have a pretty solid group of friends out there already. :)

dcorsetto

Hey Clinton! I'm glad you asked; I have some not-fun news that I haven't felt like sharing yet, regarding the SECRET PROJECT. On the bright side, I'm aiming to get back to Elephant Town by September!! <3

dcorsetto

I texted a photo of the comic to Jess as soon as I finished it, thinking about We Can Fix It! I told her that I know how to draw people kissing because of her excellent tutorial she put out ages ago, and asked if it was ALSO WEIRD to draw herself kissing herself for that book. She made the point that We Can Fix It is a comedy so it wasn't nearly as awkward!

Clinton Johnston

"Yay!" for the bright side. "Oh no!" for the other side.

dcorsetto

Yeah! I'm trying to focus on the bright side one!!
