Michael hinted to me that taking last night off from figure drawing would be just fine with him, but I had a heck of a day yesterday, and all I wanted was to get lost in some brushstrokes.

Luckily, he was just fine with that, too.

Five minute warmups!

I wasn't sure if my wrist would be okay to press a pencil or pen to paper, because your dear narrator here got into an impromptu arm balance the night before after sipping mojitos with Luke, and was lost in thought about something unrelated to said arm balance, and toppled over into a nightstand. I came out of the ordeal with a small goose egg (a duck egg?) near my elbow and soreness in three other seemingly unrelated areas of my arm, and a weaker grip strength than usual.

So for my first two warmups, I used a water soluble pencil held at a low angle over the paper, which has a lower impact on my wrist. I used a brush loaded with water to smear the pencil lead, but there was a learning curve that I was too impatient to learn, so eventually I just used grey and black colored pencils on those two last ones.

For the final long pose, I wanted to abstract the body to fit into the confines of the paper:

And here's the process from there!

And the final scan:

Overall I liked the way it came out! Going over the red fabric behind her one more time after it dried was totally worth the effort (it's also something I can do during our 5-minute breaks, when the model's in a robe warming her fingers near an old electric heater).

Here are some closeups!

Micheal pointed out, in the least creepy way he could, "That's a good boob." I agree. The boob is pretty great.

I realized halfway through coloring the legs that I could just keep the back leg one color and the front leg another color and it would be way more interesting than painting them both the same color. Pro tip! Different colors be more interesting than same colors!

And here are some fingies:

I liked the silly red outlines on this hand. :)

It *is* a good boob. Also good hand and knee, but especially foot and curve of belly (I like the way you capture the inner weight of flesh). I hope your egg doesn't hatch into anything too toxic… x

I noticed the red outlines of the hand in the foreground, before I’d read on to where you mentioned it & I thought, “ooh, I love it when that happens!” Maybe that was merely an artistic choice, but I initially assumed it was you capturing that fun visual phenomenon where the color from a brightly colored object “spills” (reflects?) onto other parts of our viewing area. There’s probably a science word for that… off to find out!

Yes! It’s a type of optical illusion called, “simultaneous contrast.” Fun!

I love the stretching and proportions you went with! The knees are also amazing, but I think my fave this time is the huge swath of light on her leg, like she's just glowing with it.
