Figure Drawing for Cartoonists (pretty SFW actually) (Patreon)
Content
Our scheduled model had to cancel last night, but luckily my good friend Jason offered to pinch hit last-minute! This is the second time he's modeling for me this week, but the next time he models, I won't be drawing him; I'll be guiding a dozen other cartoonists while they draw him.
My friend Shannon runs this sweet group called the Comix Accountability Club, or CAC, which mostly exists on Discord. She wanted to organize a cartoonist retreat this summer, and asked if I could lend a hand making it happen in Shepherdstown (hello, yes, bring the cartoonists TO MEEEEE). They're embarking on my little town tomorrow night, and I'll be feeding them (!!!! NOT MY FORTE, but I'm gonna try!) and leading a figure drawing session on Saturday night.
Some of you may recall that I've led a Figure Drawing for Cartoonists workshop at SPX the past two years (it'll be available this September again!). I'll be dialing in and adding to that same workshop for this group of cartoonists this weekend. I'm excited about it!
Since we'll have Jason again as our model, I decided to use the long pose last night to sketch up some examples of how to use a pose in a more cartoony way (though you'll see that I barely deviated from my usual style, despite trying!).
BUT FIRST! Five-minute warmups!
After this I took a nice long time working up a value & style study:
And from there, I started riffing on the first drawing (I really only looked up at Jason when I needed a little inspiration from the muse himself).
I asked Jason to QUICK, give me an animal. He immediately responded with "BOBCAT."
Like I said, I didn't really go nuts with changing up the design, but drawing him as an animal is a start! By the time I finished the lil tail on Bobcat Jason, we still had 45 minutes left, so I dove into my usual watercolor mode:
Lighter than usual! This was only about 25 minutes worth of watercoloring.
I'm gonna keep these out of the shop for now so I can share them with the artists on Saturday. If I get any photos from our session, I'll share them here!
In the meantime, your Art Nerd Tier Exclusive Patreon discount ARTNERD50 still works for 50% off any of the original art in the figure drawing tier, so knock yer socks off (your socks will probably stay on, there are only a couple pieces in there!). See y'all tomorrow for Daily Comics Daaaaay!
