Hello and good morning! (Assuming I get this up early enough!) I had visitors from out of town last weekend, so I spent those few mornings hanging out with them instead of making daily comics, but here are the ones I did make!

Picking back up with that phone-free trip I made back in 2015...

I guess we just celebrated the ten-year anniversary of the Confederate flag being removed from that building in South Carolina! I was in a Pizza Pizza when I heard the news. (I guess I also missed the greater conversation about the Bill Cosby thing until after my trip? Apparently the NYT cover came out while I was unplugged.)

Here's the original art if you wanna own it! Scroll down for your 50% off discount for being a patron of mine!

I recently ran a teen comics-making class at the local library...

I FEEL YOU, KID.

Here's the original, if you'd like it! (Special thanks to Rachel at the Shepherdstown Library for having me!! And for backing me here, too! <3 )

I've been sticking to the rule that my phone stays out of my bedroom, which means I have some unconventional texting positions before I put the phone in the bathroom and go to bed.

Fennel made a bed out of the space between my slippers the other night.

Here's the original! The wording's a little different, but it's the same idea. :)

I'm just gonna preface this next one by saying: panel 3 is supposed to be me in the shower (I rushed it!). Anyway, this happened after I got home from yoga:

Anytime my cats do something that's in their nature, but annoying, I remove them from the situation, and then give them treats. Because, at the very least, they did a good job at being a cat.

Ollie would like to point out that he was hissing at ME for picking him up, not at the neighbor's cat. But I would like to point out that he started purring in my arms soon after I picked him up. SO. u_u

Here's the original art for this one! You can use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for 50% off, my thank-you for being a beloved patron of mine. :) (That works on any original comics art in the store.)

This weekend I'm entertaining a dozen cartoonists who are embarking on Shepherdstown for a comics-making retreat!! I'm excited! I don't know anyone except the organizer, my friend Shannon, whom I met at the zine fest in Staunton last year. I agreed to feed all 15 of us for three meals, even though I am TERRIBLE at cooking for more than 2 people! Wish me luck!!

I hope someone else makes you a meal this weekend. (And that it is edible.) See you next week!

There are strays, semi-feral and feral cats at my wife's care center. One tux I call Momma because she keeps the others in line. She's friendly (accepts tail hugs and scritches) and vocal. Most appear to be fixed. Some look like they've been in a fight. No cat rescues here that I've found for the 2 tux kittens who hide but will take the kibble. There appears to be at least 10 of them, 4 of which will approach me, the others stay out of reach. They share catnip when I bring it, but only 2 share the food, siblings from the looks of them. What they don't eat, the crows and laughing gulls scarf up. Am I going to be "that old eccentric cat guy", or am I already there?

Omg Good Luck with feeding so many people!!

I feel that first comic intensely. But I don't know how to do it.

I was trying to think of a funny collective noun for a group of cartoonists. It's a colony of artists, and a worship of writers, so since cartoonists do both, I suggest a "mission" of cartoonists. Good luck hosting your mission!

A caricature of cartoonists? An audience of artists? A dabble of doodlers?

A month without a phone and screens sounds impossible and wonderful

It was the easiest decision for me. My friends were in charge of my home and my phone while I was away. I had a stash of (Canadian) cash that I was ready to use. I had away messages. It was definitely what i would consider a sabbatical, but a self-funded one - I think having the means is the first big step, and at that moment, I had both the means and the drive.

A cackling of cartoonists. A clowncar of comic artists. These cartoonists do have a mission, though - they're driven!! - so that suits!

I want to write a book about the experience, and within that I want to give practical advice on how to do it, too - may I ask what would be the hardest part for you if you wanted to pursue a month away from your phone/screens/media in general?

I just asked Kenneth this question; may I ask what would be the hardest part for you if you wanted to pursue a month away from your phone/screens/media in general?

I also picked up my cat and he hissed at me this week! I'm so amazed that he's only hissing and not scratching or trying to get away. A second after, I could feel his body relax into me. (I picked him up because he wanted to run into the neighbour's yard, where a cat reigns that routinely beats him up. I like to think he knows I'm protecting him)

A month of no screens sounds very freeing, even though I would find it a challenge. I rely on my phone for the calendar and reminders, so I'd need a way to do that without one - I don't know if I could handle a paper diary. I assume a bonus would be reading actual books (rather than digital), because there was no other option, and maybe with a real flashlight, since that's another common use of my phone. But I think the hardest for me would be knowing that even if people were looking after devices and responding to things where needed, that I would probably feel compelled to deal with it all on resumption. Were you able to avoid that axe hanging over your head?
