Hello, my Friday Flock! Here's a fresh batch of dailies for you. Maybe you dog people on the east coast can relate to this first one.

It's as if dogs have been marking everything with invisible ink this whole time, and suddenly I have a pair of secret glasses and I can see them all.

Piss is everywhere.

Here's the original art, if you'd like it! Scroll to the bottom of this post for your 50% off coupon, as always!

Soup party was a roaring success, but I had important decisions to make beforehand.

I think Ollie and I interpret the message of a bowl full of dead ladybugs a bit differently.

Here's the original art for this one!

I had this weird dream the other day and now I'm gonna make you read all about it, and it's two pages long.

But there's a great benefits package.

Here's the original art!

It's weird how specifically I remembered the hippos; they were made to look like they were submerged in water. Did I see this somewhere? Here's the closest thing I can find with a quick image search.

And to clarify, going to an indoor pool would be the last thing on Ryan's list of birthday wishes. That job, however, might be up his alley.

This next one might feel familiar to you.

Anyone else feeling this? I swear yesterday was also Friday.

Here's the original art!

The reason it might feel extra familiar is that it was inspired by this comic from last year:

These months sure do be giving hibernation.

This last one was inspired by all the leftover soup we've been eating post-Soup Party! (And also my ability to anthropomorphize anything.)

I dunno, man, I don't speak Spoon. I hope they're alright.

Here's the original Spoons art! Remember to use the coupon code DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for 50% off any original art in the store!

Kinda proud of myself for finishing six pages of dailies this week and finishing my Hourly Comic Day pages! Which are here, in case you missed 'em! (And it's a free post, so you can share with your friends if you know people who like mundane autobio comics!)

All the pipe drama is over and we're finally in thaw-out weather... for now. Forty feels like a beach vacation. Hope some of you are enjoying the thaw, too!

Oh man, I get so up in my head about not rotating out the dishes--I always put clean silverware on the bottom of the stack, clean cups in the back, etc. When my daughter and husband help with dishes she does this half the time and he never does. Our poor anthropomorphized utensils and dishes never know what's coming!

Ben Hatke

Gosh I love your dailies.

Hugh Eckert

I rotate dishes and silverware... not so much bowls, as we have a very eclectic selection of those, size/shape wise.

Smith

I feel honest guilt if I don’t rotate the dishes…also, your dailies have become an anchor point of joy for me.

Miranda Schubert

Working from home, I spend a lot of days in my pajamas. Kudos to you for actually putting on real clothes for a couple hours!

Gal

There’s a great Israeli children’s book about anthropomorphized dishes and utensils! Unfortunately I’m not aware of an English translation. Illustrations are great though. https://nypl.overdrive.com/media/3341322

David Neale-Lorello

Back when Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show, he told a joke that has stayed with me decades later (for whatever random reason): "It was so cold last night, this morning I saw a dog stuck to a tree." I'm glad Quetza's piss is warm enough that that doesn't happen. Also, I totally do that with spoons, too.

Andy Ihnatko

Yeah, I've really had it with this winter. I needed to cheer myself up a little, so I plotted a graph of the daily rate of change in sunset time. It wasn't enough to know that days have been getting longer since December…I needed to see that they're now nearly a minute and a HALF longer every day!

William Cole

Our silverware has, over many decades, become a mishmash of assorted sets and mysterious orphans. There are very clearly Good Spoons and Bad Spoons. I've been known to root through the whole stack to find the last clean Good Spoon.

William Cole

I feel uncomfortably seen by the February comic. Also, to clarify, is there actually a Goodwill Pool, or was that part of the dream logic?

kaitou

That's just the dog version of social media. They do a lot of pissposting.

Mads

I've been off work recovering from a broken hip since the end of October and stuck at home most days. I'm going back to work this weekend. The last three months have been one big blur.

Jack Foy

Wait, people don't put the clean dishes on the bottom?

Brendan

Well, based on the comments, our tendency to run through our dishes prior to running the dishwasher isn't typical. It does avoid leaving anyone out, though. (and avoids either of us having to touch Wet Things and make Bad Sounds washing by hand)

Mrs

I've been neglecting my bottom spoons too. Same for plates and cups by the way... 😆

dcorsetto

Hahaha that is very generous of you, thank you! 😅

dcorsetto

Oooo that cover looks beautiful, though!

dcorsetto

Definitely dream logic! Seemed like something that could happen, though. As evidenced by your sincere question.

dcorsetto

And considering how coo-coo bananas Quetza is for sniffing piss and doling it out, it's just as addictive as social media.

dcorsetto

Oh my god that sounds excruciating, I'm sorry!!

dcorsetto

I bet going back to work actually seems like a pleasant thing by now. I hope?!

dcorsetto

It's just me and sometimes me & Luke, and I wash dishes by hand at least twice a day, so we don't go through all of them! Except on Mondays, during Art Night, the luxurious excuse for me to run a load of dishes in the dishwasher. u_u

dcorsetto

Depends on the household size and whether you have/use a dishwasher! I can't stand a sink full of dishes, so I hand wash at least twice a day.

Amy Crook

Those bottom spoons should appreciate their quiet lives, but I suppose it's nice to be wanted for something. I have my own set of silverware because I'm picky (and I had it before I moved in), and so even less of those get used. Poor things! Except the butter knives, this household goes through butter knives like mad.

Hazel

I've had the same thoughts about my spoons, and deliberately jumble them up every now and again to encourage variety

Andy Ihnatko

Now that I think of it, you've come up with a good, empathetic reason to let dishes and utensils in the sink for a few days. It shuffles the roster. When you diligently wash and put away things as soon as you're done eating, none of them turn into Disney heroines, singing plaintive, Act I solos about how they're never put into the spotlight and allowed to truly shine…

Tim Pendergast

You do the dishes before you're totally out of silverware? Fancy! ;) I dry my silverware by just standing them up in pint glasses and long ago stopped putting back in the drawer, so every spoon has an equal chance at glory! The joys of being a 62 year old bachelor. :P

Chris W.

Easiest way to ensure that all your utensils get equal time is to take them off the top of the stack and, once they're washed, put them back on the *bottom* of the stack. (I do that with bowls, too.)

Chris W.

You could just put the dirty dishes and utensils directly in the dishwasher and run it when it gets full. (Give them a quick rinse before putting them in if they've got food all over them, of course.)

Chris W.

I was going to say you must have a lot of pint glasses, but then I noticed the "62 year old bachelor" part of your post, so I guess you just don't use much silverware.

Michael Steamweed

Pay toilets? I was quite surprised when I saw that in Europe (well, the first time). One euro coin per stall entry? WTH.

dcorsetto

And this is what began Andy's Tower of Dirty Dishes...

dcorsetto

Find your joy where you can, man!! My joy is in having an empty sink, like a total square. :p

dcorsetto

I actually agree with the concept! I first encountered it in Germany and the bathrooms were clean and maintained. That said, $4 for a basement Goodwill bathroom seems sus.

Margaret Lutz

Are the benefits free bathroom visits?

Michael Steamweed

Yes exactly! Four dollars? In this economy?? Just for restroom access??? :O

Susy

So I tried scrolling the comments of the last few weeks first before making this comment, but there's just too many. Has anyone pointed out to you yet that those are not ladybugs? They are asian lady beetles and they can bite. It's rare, mainly because once they start coming in our homes they pretty much die in about 24 hours in my experience. I also wonder about the cutlery at the bottom of the stack so I try to rotate through once in a while. Stay Warm!

Smith

Thank you.

Tim Pendergast

I collect pint glasses, but one will hold 8 pieces of silverware no problem!

Ash

If I write a comment, but then change it before I post it, I’ll try to reuse the original letters “so they don’t feel bad.” Also, if the pool makes your eyes burn, that’s not chlorine. There’s probably a lot of chlorine *too* but that’s because of the rest.

Katherine Sippel

I feel slightly less weird for always putting my clean silverware and dishes on the bottom of the pile, so I get uniform wear.

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I was debating whether I should've posted anything anywhere about the anniversary of "and that's January" but then it became past January, oops (I bought the original and that's in our bedroom lol)

Minzoku Bokumetsu

also Spouse rotates our plates (new ones go on the bottom) so I've been TRYING to do the same with the cutlery and glasses, too, but Spouse hasn't bothered with that, hmm

Minzoku Bokumetsu

also curious if you actually read text in your dreams like is in your comic, since a lot of the ones I record are ones where I've read something very specific, since apparently MOST PEOPLE DON'T READ IN DREAMS, which is weird! I even had one just recently where I was aware I was dreaming and HYPERFOCUSED on some words (actually a manufacturing code) and started writing down what I read (in-dream) before "waking up" and seeing what I'd written was gone (I did not actually wake up then)

Iitu Ducin

Wait, people actually stack their spoons and not just throw them in?!

Indira

Happy to read so many comments of people who also rotate their dishes!(although I admit I’m not as strict about it with cutlery, but I often neglect dishes so a lot of them get used anyway)

Pocket Vinyl (band) & The Touring Test (comic)

I also anthropomorphize the cutlery. I find it's easier to switch around the rotation if every spoon is a different kind of spoon. The randomness feels uniform, and each one feels special to use in a way that invites small change with each meal. And it has the added benefit of making sure all the spoon voices in my head are satisfied. And no, of course I don't also do this with every other thing in our home.

Yfke

That first daily reminds me of when John Lennon said, “You must remember this, a piss is just a piss”. - I don’t think he was aware of how much dog piss is around us all, though. 🤔

Blair Riddle

I store my spoons (and forks) sideways pulling from one end and restocking on the other so they cycle through evenly. That way no one is jealous.

dcorsetto

Yup, they're definitely the Asian lady beetles! I actually made a comic about the Asian lookalikes last year! I did a shallow dive, by which I mean I didn't like, read academic papers or anything, just looked up the history of them being imported intentionally to the US, and their effect on the environment... and decided that I like them just the same as if they were native ladybugs. I'll just be sure not to handle them in a way that'll get me bitten!

dcorsetto

Omg Ash that is very sweet of you to think of the letters. 🥺

dcorsetto

Ooohhh I didn't remember that you had the original!! Also, thank you, I went looking for that original to see if I'd sold it yet and was hoping I hadn't just lost it. ;) Glad you have it!

dcorsetto

I've heard that people can't read in their dreams, too! It's often difficult, but possible, in mine.

dcorsetto

I have a wild variety of dishes and mugs and I love having unmatched sets of like, teacups and stuff so I can pick one that matches my mood/guest. :) Hehehe and yeah, same.

Chris W.

I have one from back when Paul Lynde was the center square in Hollywood Squares ('70s). He remarked that he knew a fellow who was "half black and half Japanese: every December 7th he attacks Pearl Bailey!" No idea why that one has stuck with me that long...

Lauren Fotiades

I am pretty sure that the research literature on dreams is just very, very limited. Like, not only does it suffer the usual psych research problems of "wow, all our test subjects are college undergrads", but I think there's just not much even of that. So much of what "everyone knows" about dreaming doesn't apply to me and, I've found out through informal surveys, many of my friends! I not only read and write in dreams, but occasionally it's even in non-English character sets. I think that there are a lot more of us than are generally known about, but I don't have a good way to get us into the dream science literature 😂

Minzoku Bokumetsu

oh, I dreamed of a hilariously weird Monopoly board modification that I just HAD to recreate IRL, including for what reason the deeds were on the board and IN JAPANESE (though I missed the PARAGRAPHS of text on Free Parking, since heck if I was going to remember ALL of that) https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/627010556_25715119521432191_3391167485963031515_n.jpg?_nc_cat=100&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=127cfc&_nc_ohc=i4AnW_MMIsgQ7kNvwFSZ8uT&_nc_oc=AdlnD3T4zc63HqoZ1_8YLbrAKYtl6EjfdxT1-6zaqQOvSpSM41LlidiWc5hwSCK_1bzLoanguOm5agDmhFD58q70&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&_nc_gid=Waijq1h7teH0ds24zBH2wg&oh=00_AfvVhIbWd6aGg0rSeuwPMzgtesdv9nOSIf8J96HV05Aw_g&oe=6998824A
