Hello and happy Friday to you all! Sorry to be so late with this one; I have two unfinished dailies that need a lot of reference material before I can complete them, and I spent last night looking up photos, but then got totally derailed and sent myself down a Wikipedia rabbit hole until 2:30 in the morning. I learned a lot!! But I woke up mega late this morning.

Anyway, what did y'all do for Valentine's Day? Here's what I did.

Reader, I did all of them. (I did a pretty okay job on my hair, too!) And Luke's feeling better now.

If you'd like the original for this one, it's right here! Scroll down for your 50% off discount code, as always!

Last Sunday I had a very 1800s day, for the most part.

Pretty well describes my life here. A little pioneer life, a little sci fi tech. A lot of socks.

Original art's here!

By the way, if you're ever in Shepherdstown and you'd like to legitimately walk into the 1800s, visit O'Hurley's General Store. The clerks wear old-fashioned clothing (that's my neighbor Genevieve in panel 2) and the whole place looks like it hasn't been affected by the outside world in two hundred years. Especially charming at Christmastime!

The friend I was catching up with on FT asked me about having ties to two very different US states when I was a kid, which inspired this next one.

WHO WOULD DO THAT??? (Actually now I wish I'd gotten temporary tattoos of their faces, just to give her a jolt.)

I sent this comic to my family, and my mom and brother said they never talked about my tattoos, so I'm kinda rewriting history according to my flawed memory here. I'm probably the one who told her they were for her and Dad. But, I love any excuse to keep my mom's Maine accent in there, so "your brothah" stays.

Here's the original art! And here's a photo of the actual tattoos, if you're curious.

Pinecones, bluebs and Indian paintbrush for Maine; poppies and seaweed for Cali. I got them from Rebeka at Brass & Briar, which is in Portland, Maine (I was FIRST IN LINE when her books opened - she's popular and you gotta be fast!).

I wonder how many of you similarly-aged readers are familiar with some flavor of this issue:

WHO KNOWS. I'm hoping my push-ups are improving at least one of them.

Here's the original art!

Guys! I called an optometrist, and they got me in within 24 hours! I'm slightly proud of myself for being proactive on this, despite my phobia.

Here's roughly how it went.

I think I needed this woman's rip-the-bandaid-off approach, or I'd have overthought it. Here's the original art! Remember to use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout to make any of these $25 + shipping instead of $50!

So, the verdict on my eye is... shrug? The optometrist didn't see anything serious, but he also didn't seem to have much interest in figuring out what's going on, if I'm honest. The technician (woman in the comic) was wonderful, but the actual doc just sent me home with an expensive bottle of eyedrops for dry-eye. I used them this morning and it seems a little better? I can't tell if I'm placebo-ing this or if it's genuinely helped.

Either way, there's still a bit of cloudiness in the same spot. I dunno. I'll keep you posted!

During Art Night this week, I started working on custom "stickers" to add to my iPhone's emoji arsenal, if I can get them to work. They're mostly based on Pip, of course. My spirit animal!

I hate all of iPhone's hand emojis (Android has WAY better hands!) to the point where I literally avoid adding a thumbs-up to conversations just so I don't have to look at that crappy drawing! What were they thinking?! Anyway, if I finish these and they work well, I'll share them with you!

And one last fun thing I did last night...

If you're in my $5/month Art Nerd tier, you're already aware of my recent love affair with neon pink.

Last night, I treated myself to an experiment: mixing Nicker neon pink gouache with every color in my gouache palette. I was kind of shocked by how beautifully it cooperated with every single color! Even the GREENS?? (The circles are the base gouache colors; the squares are those colors with various amounts of neon pink added.)

I'll play with it more and then do a little special feature on it for my Art Nerds. (Art Nerd tier members also see all of my figure drawings, which, well, you can tell by the title of the last one that hot pink has been A Thing in those sessions lately! It's been a fun diversion from my usual color palette.)

That's it for this week's update! And I'll leave you with a question: if you could add (or replace) any emoji to your phone's emoji menu, what would it be? Maybe I'll add it to my list...

Have a lovely weekend, pals! 🌈

Laura Tripp

I need a better emoji for disgust. I feel like I've been reacting that way a lot lately

Josh Smift

Huh, do you have a trimmer specifically for pubes? I don't trim mine very often, but when I have in the past, I just used my beard trimmer. I guess that sounds vaguely icky, but like it's just hair! Also: My brain briefly confused gouache with ganache, and I thought you were making neon pink chocolate knickers, and was like what what what?

Boum

HAHA are those the things for the eye pressure? They blast air (?) directly into your eyeball? Yeah they're not particularly fun (but I've had eye INJECTIONS so, uh, they're ok in comparison.)

Lynn

I had a similar eye complaint and was also treated with eye moistening drops and I think it did help me. I was also super skeptical but it did help! Remembering to use them was the hardest part.

dcorsetto

It's not icky at all! People are so silly about this stuff. As if our head hair is any cleaner than our pube hair! (And yes, I have a very tiny little trimmer - it's a tricky place to trim!) Damn, hot pink chocolate pants. Yeah, I'm in for that, too.

dcorsetto

HNNGNGNNG EYE INJECTIONSSSSSS AAAAAAAA So, idk what this thing was, but she said it's a REPLACEMENT for the puff of air. It stays there for a couple seconds. Frankly I think the puff test may have been less bad?!

dcorsetto

That's promising, thank you!! I'm glad it's working for you! How often do you use those drops? I'm wondering if I should let myself just use 'em all day long... haven't had a chance to look up if you can *over* use them.

Amy Crook

you're gonna make me pull out my old zoisite & opera pink palette sometime and paint some more octopi or something with it. octopuses? whatever. I totally sympathize about the "is this problem better or did i just get used to it" issue, I figure whatever works, works.

Andy Ihnatko

I made an appointment with an eye doc because of some pain that didn't go away after a week. I loitered in the waiting room for like 45 minutes past my scheduled time, as expected. Then: I was seen by a junior doctor. Within minutes, I was seen by the eye doc whose name had been on the practice for twenty years. Within minutes, I was given the address of a university-affiliated eye hospital in the city (some 30 miles away) and told that they've been called and a Professor of Eye Doctory is expecting me that same afternoon. Soooo, compared with your experience…I…win? (Bad eye infection; the cause for immediate alarm and response was that the pressure of the fluid inside that eye was CRAZY high.)

Douglas Appelt

Heh. I loved the switch from pioneer clothing to "The Jetsons" clothing and back again in the Feb 15 comic. Great touch!

Crushbot (security*)

Thank you for going to the eye doctor, even if he was a douche about it.

Andy Ihnatko

I LOVE those tattoos! I know I'm not supposed to judge what anybody chooses to do with their meatbags, but I love tattoos that tick all of my favorite boxes like that: 1) Applied with perfection… 2) A gorgeous design… 3) …That is clearly is going to continue to look terrific decades after the link to the Instagram post has gone dead… 4) And is personally-significant, in an elegant way. That is, a tattoo sleeve almost has to be considered a piece of public art…and yet the meaning and significance of your sleeves is something _private,_ known only to you and to those you choose to share it with. For the record: my sincere reaction to a tattoo that fails on all of the above criteria is "I'm so glad you went and did something like this that makes you happy." I postpone the full-body shivers until I have a moment of privacy.

Andy Ihnatko

As you know, I live in a neighborhood that contains two or three excellent restaurants and a pizza place. Every Valentine's Day, the devil on my left shoulder suggests that I order a pizza, go pick it up, and then, as I walk past the clumps of couples huddled outside of restaurants, waiting in the cold for their tables, I pretend to be on the phone with my partner. "You're so right…I'm glad that we decided to just celebrate with a simple, cozy night in." The angel on my right laughs and agrees that this would be hysterically funny, but they're kind of obligated to urge me not to do things like this.

Lynn

I keep a bottle on my medicine cabinet and added them to my morning and bedtime routine. I also wear contacts, so just make that an added step to putting on and taking out my lenses. And I also don't get the oogies around eye touching because of years of contact lens wear, so I might have an easier time of it than you do. I also have a bottle I keep in my bag so I can use it when out and about. I can feel the dryness when I need to use them so it does remind me to use some.

Kit Sekelsky

Does the cloudiness have the same effect as when a flash would go off and you can still see the spot where it hit your eye after the fact? (Or, I guess, in this post-flash year of 2026, just like accidentally looking at a lightbulb) If so, I have THE SAME thing, along with a third specialist's best guess of something called "white dot syndrome".

William Cole

Yikes, but at least they acted with urgency.

William Cole

The tattoo story is adorable! And yeah, good call on not getting faces.

allanfranta

Get a temporary tattoo of their faces and put them amongst the flowers the next visit to mom and tell her you had some work done?

allanfranta

Oh and put the wrong face in the flowers!

Melissa Wilson

I’m so proud of you for getting checked out & hope the eye drops help! That said, I feel compelled to share something of a PSA… Not to freak you out unnecessarily (Know I hate myself, more than a little, just for thinking about asking this, knowing about your EYE THING & not wanting to risk traumatizing you, but)… Your concern sounds too much like my own early experiences with blurry-sometimes-floaty bits in my eyes for me not to wonder… Did your eye exam include a retinal scan? If not, you may want to consider one, at your next visit. Which should be sooner, rather than later, if the drops don’t help pretty quick. Retinal scans are not yet standard these days, so they can cost extra (mine’s usually $30) but it’s fast & doesn’t touch your actual eyeball & that’s how I found out I have a condition called POHS (which is common in the MS & OH valley regions, especially amongst poultry farmers, people who feed wild birds & gardeners. And I know we have at least one of those things in common). POHS is fairly easy to control, if you know what to watch out for, but left unchecked, flare ups can result in scarring & blindness, if you ignore them. As an added bonus of getting a retina scan, you get a pair of fascinating high resolution images of the insides of your eyeballs, which look rather a lot like nebulae. It’s both gorgeous and slightly gross. Maybe it would kinda be like getting to see the stars that Luke sees in your eyes? 🤩 Anyway, sorry for even mentioning this & possibly triggering another long night of researching on the interwebs. I hope this all turns out to be completely irrelevant information for you.

Tiffany Pincombe

Omg, that is the best description of an iCare tonometer I've ever seen!! Did you have to look up what they look like? That is brilliant. Although I'm disappointed to hear that you didn't feel like you were listened to at the optometrist.. grr.

Joanna

I would love to have a good emoji for a hug. It’s the thing I want to do most often when texting to friends a long way off

NJGR

Gah, anyone else remember how horrible AOL emojis were? I'm still traumatized from that, but I also have an Android and only hate the hug emoji here.

Akire Bubar

The thumbs up! But I also love your pointing up emoji - unlike the Android ones, impossible to mistake for the middle finger! I always worry that if I use the pointing up emoji someone will think I'm giving them the finger...

Dirk Bergstrom

My wife has a somewhat mystifying vision problem where distant object aren't clear, despite a new prescription. Her eye doctor has been pretty dismissive and un-helpful so I've been trying to get her to try a different doc. A couple years back I had some odd effects in one eye, which turned out to be Posterior Vitreous Detachment. Of course it started on Friday night, leading to a somewhat nervous weekend before I could get confirmation that it was minor. https://www.asrs.org/patients/retinal-diseases/9/posterior-vitreous-detachment

dcorsetto

omg HOW DID YOU SEE THAT?!?! YES!! I just fixed it on the original, thanks!

dcorsetto

A bit like that, yeah! Shit, I'm sorry you've got it, too!

dcorsetto

I did!! I looked at it once and was like "I AM NOT GOING TO MAKE UP WHAT THOSE PARTS DO" and decided not to look at it again... so I had to dig online, which was tough without knowing the exact name! I had the two parts mixed up in my head: the dangly vibrate-y thing was at the TOP in my brain!

Amelia Lewis

But how do you do it? Top of someone's head next to the back of someone's head going into their back , with arm and hand reaching up to cover shoulder blades? But even that is ... busy, and that's with the faces and other set of arms (mostly) elided. Mininamlist: two circles, one attached to an inverted U (other circle lies tangent to firs circle and top of one side of inverted U, then stickfigure hands?

Tim Pendergast

Ah, youth! Fighting that impulse to go to bed when tired despite the time. That went out the window for me when I turned 50. So many times over the last 10 years I was working that I came home from work and just nosedived into bed. It's always weird when you go to the doctor with what you think is a serious problem and the doctor fluffs it off. You should be happy but instead you end up aggravated! This also reminds me of our family doctor when I was a kid (pediatricians are for rich people!) who invariably had one of two reactions when you saw him: 1: What are doing here? 2: Why didn't you come in sooner? You could never hit the sweet spot! :P

Miranda Schubert

Haha I am detail oriented (just a tad undiagnosed OCD mayhaps)

David Neale-Lorello

If I'm reading the image correctly and your drawing of your tattoos in panel two of the second comic has you facing the viewer, you have your dad on the left and your mom on the right? If so, I have EXACTLY THE SAME THING! Except my tattoos are an elephant sitting on a stool next to a boy sitting on a stool next to the elephant and with his arm around the elephant (left/Dad; he collected elephant statuettes) and my mother's favorite silver bell (right; she collected bells). Next time I see you I'll show you!

Jay Moyes

I wish I had been in an artists's group therapy instead of trying to transfer for a bachelor's. I loved gauche, but I had been left with an impression that it was passé for fine arts and that acrylics, watercolor or oils were the way to go. I recently even saw Stefani Rabideaux use gauche on wood! I didn't even know I could do that!!!

Jay Moyes

As an artist, it's so nice to know I'm not the only one that freaks out over something touching my eyes. Not just medical stuff, but I've always had a hard time doing make up. "What do you mean I have to take this eyeliner pencil and draw on my eyelid!?? Who's idea was this!?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Minzoku Bokumetsu

you should also make those emojis into REGULAR stickers, too! =D

Trebuchet

Thank you for going to the eye doctor, I've been worrying about you. Sorry they weren't helpful. Now I'm still going to worry, but at least you've had some reassurance.

DHoover Art

My youngest has the same reaction to getting the pressure test at the eye doctor. He's had two eye surgeries and he handled those better than the pressure test. It's not just you!

pfreya

I’ve always wished for a “cheers” or “clink” emoji that wasn’t alcohol-based. My cousins grew up in the same pub-and-live music environment I did, but they’re underage (and think beer is icky anyway) so tea is the social beverage we share :) Also, love a Brass and Briar shoutout!! That’s where my partner’s gotten all her tattoos, and I’m heading there for my next piercing hopefully soon 😎

Erik Greenfrost

There are a bunch of bugs and dinosaurs and two different dragons but somehow no ferret (my fiancées affinity animal) - seriously?!?

Boum

Weird! I've never had that!

dcorsetto

I had to check, I couldn't remember!! YES!! Aww I wanna see yours next time I see you irl! Haha that's such a nesting doll of imagery for your dad.

dcorsetto

OMG yes. I can do mascara on myself (I have to kinda mentally check out for a moment, though) but HELL NO to eyeliner!!

dcorsetto

TWO!! EYE SURGERIES!!! KBJKLAJMAMDMUUFFU damn, that kid's brave! Makes me feel a little better, thank you!

dcorsetto

Oohh I like that! Maybe juice boxes to make it truly kid-friendly... how cool that you've got a connection to Brass & Briar!! Are you Maine-based??

David Neale-Lorello

Once you see the picture (it's from a postcard he had framed in his office), it makes sense, but it's hard to describe.

Michael Steamweed

I love the old-timey attire for the day's activities, except the cyberpunkish outfit for using high-tech. :)

pfreya

Yeah! Was born out of state but moved here when young, lived most of my life between the midcoast and Bangor. I didn’t know you had a Maine connection too until recently, it was a cool surprise seeing snippets of home appear in your dailies!

dcorsetto

Aww, sweet! My mom grew up in Mechanic Falls, just to put a place to my childhood Maine memories. :) Now we visit her friend in Turner when we visit.

Cat

I think you might benefit from taking a Xanax next time you have to go to the eye doctor. Just saying.

pfreya

Oh wicked, Andro county is so pretty! I remember schlepping up there as a kid in autumn (25 years ago!) to buy a tractor, got to play with a Very Good Dog while my dad did the grown up things. They’re off the beaten path of I95, but if you’re ever in Brunswick or Friendship there’s a seat by the fire pit for ye :)

dcorsetto

I'd never heard Androscoggin shortened to Andro and was like WOW did I go this whole time not knowing the county name?? 😂 I believe I've been to Brunswick - it's definitely been talked about before! I'd be chuffed to take you up on that one day!

Danielle Shuping

just cause you mentioned color, do you follow brush with Bekah on YouTube? she mixes old school (like 100+ year old paints) to showcase what it looked like, what kinda colors you can get etc etc. she's totes safe while doing it (although trolls & Stupids try to turn her into the authorities...) but it's absolutely fascinating to watch someone showcase colors in such a surreal way: https://www.youtube.com/@bekahart

Danielle Shuping

I love watching artists on YouTube because of the stuff they do and i'm always like "oh holy crap how the carp did you figure out you could do that???" There's a young lady I follow that paints on everything? purses, clothes, wood, whatever and it always looks so stunning. And the pottery people I follow are just like "meh. wanted to see what happens. f it!" Do you follow Scott Sava at all? He's dang encouraging...like a modern day Bob Ross, just without the afro. He's also on the spectrum which is nice.

Jay Moyes

First I've heard of Sava, I'll have to check him out

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Okay, dekstop Patreon has messed up somehow, bc I see different posts on phone Patreon, so somehow I missed this post?? (the one I commented on earlier about your shop content seems to be locked for me, so... Patreon gonna Patreon I guess)

dcorsetto

Ooohh this is very interesting! Thank you, Dani!

dcorsetto

I'm not sure how, but that post you commented on earlier was sent out to EVERYONE instead of just the regular $5/mo+ Art Nerd members at first! So, it's half "Patreon gonna Patreon" (because I swear I picked the right tiers to send it to), but it's also half "oh whoops let's put that behind the proper paywall," which was my edit an hour or so later!
