Good Friday to you all! I hope your days have been warming up (assuming you're in the northern hemisphere and you want that). It's supposed to be nigh-60° tomorrow before snowflakes reappear in my weather app (la la la not paying attention to anything after Saturday).

A few weeks ago, I started a couple of comics with Black History Month on my mind (I'm still working on a follow-up to this one). I'm curious how many of my white readers grew up in extremely white areas in the States in the 80s, and if they also had this experience, or if it was unique to Kemptown, Maryland...

I checked my yearbook before writing in Pip's part. TWO black kids!! It wasn't even that small of a school! (Panel three is a bit of a non-sequitur, but the point is meant to be that talking about BHM in class made me realize just how white my school was, for the first time.)

Here's the original art for this one! As always, scroll down for your 50% off coupon before ya buy any original art from the store this week!

Apologies to anyone here who has a loud vroom-vroom car, but...

Every person who revs their engine in my tiny quiet little town, I dream of following them home and just mildly annoying them while they're trying to sleep.

Here's the original art for this one!

Maybe it's because we're still in Hibernation Season, but I've been looking at my phone way more than usual lately. So...

Admission: I have NOT started my taxes. But I've spent less time on my phone! It works!

And it's very cute. And satisfying to wrap up. (Very important: it MUST be cute & satisfying. That's the magic ingredient.)

Here's the original art for this one!

If I was on a dating app I would use this next comic to describe myself.

And here are links to all of the things that that make up yours truly:

that excellent Beetle Bailey cartoon...

and the blog post below it, about punctuation (fun read, especially if you wanna know why a question mark is shaped like that!)

and the book I bought: A B C et Cetera: the Life & Times of the Roman Alphabet

and Laurie Spiegel (yes, you should look up her actual music if that kind of thing interests you, but her wikipedia page is just as interesting)

And here's the original art for the comic, if that flavor of nerdery suits you!

And to wrap this all up, a comic about the ongoing mystery of Danielle's Eye Problem...

WELP! I guess I paid for a second opinion? (My insurance doesn't cover eye stuff, except injuries.)

It's frustrating... both the optometrist and the ophthalmologist just seemed to blow off the whole reason I came in (if you need a refresher, it's in the third comic here). On the plus side, the ophthalmologist said I had the healthiest-looking retinas she'd seen in a long time! But: that does not help me, obviously. I got no answers and I still have this recurring fuzzy spot in the center of my right eye, and two professionals just think that's normal, I guess.

BONUS PANEL: the ophthalmologist was less than a mile from the best art store in the area, Howard's Art, so I treated myself to a visit. My old pal & classmate Robert Farmer works there.

I was excited to actually see what I had bought, several hours later when my eyeballs shrunk!

Pretty mild haul, but that titanium white gouache came in super handy later in the day! (You'll see why soon - I owe my Art Nerd members some pet portrait process pics!)

Before I forget, here's the original art for that last one! If you want me to include the bonus panel, mention it to me - I'll cut it out of the scrap paper I drew it on for ya. :)

Remember to use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for your Patreon-exclusive 50% off, for any art in the original comics art section!

This'll be the last week that I price these comics at $50 (which is just $25 + shipping for you, my beloved patrons, with that coupon code) - I'll be raising the prices from now on starting next week, so if you want any of my original daily comics art, grab it before March!

Til then, may your weekend be the perfect temperature, and may you be blessed by a cat's butthole.

Edit: Patreon's being wonky, so if you saw this Butthole Buddies photo scattered randomly somewhere in the Beetle Bailey section of this post, that's why! #️⃣💲⚡️❉💣⍰!!

I have Aetna Eye insurance, the $51/month tier. It really helps, and I can get glasses yearly!

Brendan

I dearly love Ollie's Little Stinker face! It's perfect.

Andy Ihnatko

Aww...! Pip needs reading glasses now!

Dave Van Domelen

Black History Month hadn't really caught on yet when I was in Catholic grade school. On the other hand, our history books (hand-me-downs from the public schools) predated the neo-Confederate backlash against the Civil Rights movement, so they had all sorts of juicy stuff about Reconstruction and Jim Crow and so forth that kids tend not to get taught in school anymore now that Texas and Florida control what's in everyone's American History textbooks. I mean, the World History textbook ended on two paragraphs about a developing conflict in Korea (1949), but at least we actually learned what happened in America in 1865-1945.

Jack Foy

I grew up about 25 miles southeast of you in the mid-eighties to early nineties, in an area that was still pretty rural but becoming more suburbanized. My experience was similar.

Andy Ihnatko

Probably 1/4 of my library consists of books I ordered when they were referenced by something else I was reading, they sounded really interesting, and I impulsively did an eBay search and found a copy for Cheap As Free. I am trying to keep reminding myself that "I'm banking them for when I have lots more time to read" is a sad, sad lie that book hoarders tell themselves.

Andy Ihnatko

Is there a unwritten industry rulebook for grawlixes? Like, does one try to suggest the actual curse words that it replaces, or ideally is it an opportunity for creative cussery in full imaginative bloom? I imagine that lifer cartoonists have certain dos and don't set in stone.

Miranda Schubert

I feel slightly better about my optometrist visit in the fall... I had pain in one of my eyes for like a month before I went in and all I got told was that I have dry eyes. I knew that, it has never caused me pain before. Happily, it fixed itself like a week later. But that was very frustrating.

allanfranta

Get Ollie some bagpipes (Or mouse pipes, thanks to T. Pratchett!)

William Cole

Re: Feb. 24, I am a very similar flavor of nerd! 🤜🤛

allanfranta

Had my eyes dilated at the Mayport, Florida naval base, oh way back in the 1970's (remember kids, I'm old) and they had none of those fancy paper sunglasses... Think Florida in the summer. Walking back to the ship, eyes heavily squinted (or skwinted) I see a shape on a bike, I noticed as it goes by that "Oh, My, that's a lot of gold on that sleeve..." turned around to see the base commander, eek, also turning around on his bike to admonish this lowly sailor for failure to salute, I showed him my eyes and said something like "I apologize, sir; but under the circumstances?" and made my escape.

Laura B

OH MY GOD, ACTUALLY IT'S BACK IN PRINT

dcorsetto

Ah I'm glad for you! It might've been worth it for me BEFORE I visited these two eye docs, but that's assuming Aetna would have even covered two back-to-back, nearly identical appointments. I bet it's a steal for people who need glasses, though!

dcorsetto

He doesn't even need them, he just thinks it makes him look smart!

dcorsetto

WHOA, that is WILD to learn about! Now I wanna get my hands on some of those books...

dcorsetto

I only recently learned about it!! I didn't know it was out of print OR that it'd been digitalized, thank you!

dcorsetto

I should know the answer to this, and I might find out during a burst of rabbit hole procrastination next week when I start my taxes...

dcorsetto

Oh, I'm glad it fixed itself!! But yeah, frustrating.

dcorsetto

I was thinking "isn't the Billy Ireland Museum doing a special thing on that book?" followed by "I bet it's back in print!"

David Neale-Lorello

It is often stunning to me how similar our flavors of nerdiness are. You hit so many dead-on in that comic! One of my favorite undergraduate classes was "Greek and Latin Roots of English." I know and love Laurie Spiegel's work (along with many other electronic musicians) and Beetle Bailey was a staple of my childhood. Thank you for existing and sharing your world -- I feel so validated!

Amy Crook

My life is constantly blessed by cat buttholes, lol, don't worry. Also I had a very similar experience with the smalltown post-racism wait white people exist childhood, but went to a more diverse high school that helped a little. It's been a process going from joke to woke I guess. XD

Rereally

I’m betting you’ve got floaters. I don’t know why the eye docs just tell you that. They’re usually harmless and eventually go away on their own. Since your eyes are supposed to be in great condition, it’s probably nothing to worry about. Btw I am not a medical professional.

allanfranta

Dammit Laura, I'm trying not to buy every book I want! ::: Sigh ::: I'll just put it on this list here...

Jenn Dahlke

Somehow I always forget that we grew up so close geographically. I was in Sykesville. (Live in Baltimore near BWI now.) The corn fields that i grew up near have now all been converted to single-family, detached housing of the expensive kind. Also, the sporadic blind spot in the center of the eye thing happens to me too. Various docs have claimed it's "harmless floaters" but i know what those are like and this blind spot doesn't migrate. Sometimes I'll be reading something and there's just a blank spot in the middle of a sentence, but when i look again from a different angle, there's a word there. It's really disconcerting and I still have no real answers. So if you find out it's something bad, please let me know.

TROUBLESHOOT

When I first went to get glasses they asked me what kind of work I do? “I’m an artist” he responded saying “ah ok so glasses aren’t necessary” :| huh? Shout out to doctors who actually listen. Hope you get closer to fixing ur mystery eyes! I’m loving your dailies :)

dcorsetto

Aww David!! Man, we just can't help having EXCELLENT (weird/niche) taste, can we? :)

dcorsetto

Joke to woke!! I never heard that one before, love it. :)

dcorsetto

I'm betting on that, too - this doc said that floaters are affected by GRAVITY (!!!!) and that they'll slowly float downward over time, so I have my fingers crossed... but I had to ASK if it might be floaters ("Could be!") before she said anything about it. I wish I'd thought to ask her how long it takes for them to move, so I can have some kind of guidance on how long to wait before I pay for an expensive THIRD opinion!

dcorsetto

Oh wild! Sykesville was one of those places I knew about, but always had to look up on a map (which I just did). The fields nearest my home are still fields, miraculously, but just ten minutes away the fields become 6-level (!!!!) attached housing. There's a Starbucks and weed dispensaries near my old high school, Urbana. I can't even drive over there, all the landmarks are gone and I get lost instantly. Your blind spot sounds pretty similar to mine. I did some reading yesterday and did find one possibility: retinal migraines (despite the name, doesn't always have a headache attached). Might be worth looking up! I do think mine are just floaters, but I wish I'd gotten more guidance from the doctor. I'm glad she doesn't seem worried, but I don't know what's normal vs. what I should be spending a ton of money getting tested! I hope yours goes away over time!

dcorsetto

The fuck, doctor!! Bluh! (Also, Maddie!! I didn't know you were here, I'm flattered!! <3 <3 <3 )

Hugh Eckert

Growing up in Northern Virginia was *exactly* like that. Also, I'm a nerd about languages, scripts, etc.

Sherri French

We're at least 90% sure there's a house of drug dealers in our neighborhood. OMG, the loud cars that come through going to that house are insane. They'll purposefully rev up and spin out right beside children playing in yards! Your wish to mildly annoy them is nicer than me. I usually shout that I hope they wrap their car around a light pole.

Christina

Thank you for the blog link and the ebay link - I just bought a copy of A B C Et Cetera - I am SO that kind of nerd!

Farel Dal

delightful and inspiring week of comics! good chuckles when your cat (ollie?) was attacking the string of the phone sleep sack in the second pic.

Alexandru Bucur

As a coincidence, I was just looking for inspiration at a blog about Romanian graphic design (mostly communist, some interbellum EDIT- located here, also in English: https://www.graphicfront.ro/ ) and I also just set an ophthalmology appointment (I need it because apparently chemo might have saved my life from cancer, but it changed my glasses prescription) . However, I read that blog post about interrogation points, and I'm sorry to say that is a bunch of bull - the "punctus interrogativus" is a medieval invention and has nothing whatsoever to do with the Romans.

Andy Ihnatko

He likes to be seen taking them off, cleaning them while adopting a thoughtful expression, and then putting them back on before responding to a question (such as "You know I've told you a hundred times to keep out of that, so why did you get all up in it regardless?").

Michael Steamweed

Page 3: If that's how we gotta hack our brains to stay away from the damn scourge, then by golly that's what we're gonna do.

Tim Pendergast

Beginning of the month I had a eye doctor's appointment and had my eyes dilatated and was completely snowblind as I crossed the parking lot! Even the pavement looked bright white to me! Thankfully I had parked very close to the door and was able to get my clip ons on before I left.

Iitu Ducin

PSA: you shouldn’t charge your phone in (or on) something flammable.

Stormsdream

And they ruled out little bits of crud on the outside of the eye? Nobody suggested warm compress a couple times a day or over the counter preservative free eye drops?

Teeceemcg

Thank you for the thought of "who to blame" for my naive view of the world. I also thought that we were progressing beyond blind racism (I mean, we elected a black president, twice!). Since Trump and the Republicans gave the bigots permission to really let it hang out, I have been living in a state of shock. I had no idea the depth and vehemence of the hate that exists here. I genuinely believe in and try to live by the golden rule ("Treat others as you would like to be treated"). I think that covers everything.

dcorsetto

Oh wow, yeah, my wish to mildly annoy them is appropriate for MY experience with the vroom-vrooms that tear through town every so often. Sounds like your wishes are equally appropriate!

dcorsetto

Fennel! She is the most "cat" of my cats - the boys seem to only proper Cat Things when they're desperate. ;) Thanks, Farel!

dcorsetto

WHOA!! Chemo can fuck up your vision?! That's wild... glad it did its other job correctly! I didn't know the term "punctus inerrogativus," thanks for adding that one to my vocab (for the next five minutes. I know I'll forget it). I did a shallow dive on this one - are you talking about the little medieval horizontal tilde-squiggle? I wonder if new information came out about the history of this punctuation AFTER that book was written (the book I bought, which that blog post is basing its information on) - I think it's from the 90s, and I have to be reminded sometimes how long ago that was!

dcorsetto

Aw they didn't give you "COOL" temporary sunglasses?? I liked mine so much I kept 'em! Lucky for me, both of my appointments were on overcast days, so having my pupils enlarged just made them seem a touch cheerier.

dcorsetto

It's a pretty consistent location in just one of my eyes, so I'd rule out "crud." I was suckered into buying a bottle of expensive preservative-free eye drops from the first guy, but I don't even have any of the symptoms for that, aside from the occasional blurred vision... but again, it's in a consistent isolated spot. I'll keep using them regardless, because that's the most I've ever paid for .33 fluid ounces of glycerine!

dcorsetto

Honestly Tom, I was equally naive. I knew bigotry still existed, but I didn't realize it existed in such a large percentage of the population.

Tim Pendergast

A lifetime of going to the eye doctor and this is first time I've heard of such a wondrous thing! Might be because I wear glasses, but they never offered me any before I started to back in my 20s.

dcorsetto

Come to think of it, neither did the ophthalmologist! Glad I kept the ones the optometrist gave me a week earlier! Not coincidentally, the optometrist went on and on about the importance of UV protectant eyewear, so I guess it shouldn't surprise me that he gave these away to all his patients.

Tim Pendergast

I guess since they asked me if I minded having them dilatated they figured I could handle it unaided! 🤣

Yfke

Excellent use of cat pictures in this one! On top of the art, obviously, which is always excellent as well. Thank you for the word "grawlix" and the links (I too am that flavor of nerd, I guess!). 😁

Stormsdream

The instinct is to trust what the expert is recommending. Mine said to use Refresh Plus Lubricated Eye Drops. Crud can seem to appear in exactly the same spot every single time, but year, follow the specifics of your situation to decide what to do. My experience with eye doctors is they all tend to be, "Eyes are tough. They'll fix themselves, but check back in 7-10 days if the issue persists."

Alexandru Bucur

Yes, more specifically one substance in particular called Cyclophosphamide. This was during my first line of chemo, when they used the more aggressive substances and, without fail, as soon as it entered my bloodstream, by vision would get blurry and I'd start sneezing uncontrollably, something which went away in about ten minutes, but after every time, I could tell my vision was just slightly worse. This all stopped when they switched to other, less toxic drugs and they did as soon as they were sure I wasn't going to expire dramatically right then and there, which had been a real possibility - I went from basically no symptoms to "abdominal tumour so large it presses on the nerves and blood vessels in my left leg so that I can't stand and I'm in constant pain" in about a month and a half. That's why it's important to get regular bloodwork done, especially if you have cancer in your family, because if they hadn't caught it I really wouldn't be here today. But moving on to merrier subjects - Yes, the medieval horizontal tilde-squiggle is exactly the one I mean. I haven't read the book, so I don't know what it says but I grew up in a town which dates back to the 6th century BC and Greek and Roman ruins were everywhere, including plenty of (mostly funerary) inscriptions and took four years of compulsory latin in highschool so I know for a fact the Romans didn't use any sort of punctuation - in fact they didn't even use pauses between words, most of their inscriptions are in what's called "scriptio continua" so basically just an unending string of letters. On later inscriptions you will find dots, squiggles or geometric shapes in between the words, but nothing you'd call actual punctuation.
