Happy Monday, gang! Despite the recent hiccup of unexpected Julie* Drama**, I'm plucking away at the first pages of the second half of Elephant Town and I'm on track to start dropping new pages next week!

For those who are new here:*Julie is my car, an aggressively safe and unreasonably chipper Kia Niro**the Drama is that the engine is dead and Suspect #1 is my neighborhood shop (the actual drama is that I'm a non-confrontational and nervous little mouse who's supposed to make them pay for it)

The first page gives away practically nothing, aside from Kris being very warm and unclothed, so I picked a couple no-spoilers panels from it to share here.

Here's a little gif of the process, from thumbnail sketch, to digital pencils, to inks, to flat colors, to rendered colors:

It feels so good to be working in ink on BIG bristol board again! My dailies are on little half-sheets of smooth, thin paper, which is like running with trainers on. I'm so ready to return to sexy variable-width brush pens on thick paper with a tooth.

Meanwhile, my camera roll is back to being populated with shameless reference photos of myself in various exaggerated positions.

And my drawing board is populated with copious scripts and doodles and ideas.

And now you know what that reference photo was for.

Looking forward to introducing you to the new character (doodled on the left with multiple hairstyles and looks) in a few days! Thanks for your patience with me as I try to get Julie back to her old singsongy self.

Cool! I'm happy you are getting back to the art you particularly love to do! You are a strong, independent person! You are BRAVE! You CAN confront the shop that damaged your car through negligence

Andy Ihnatko

1) Oh, boy! New ET! Can't wait! 2) If you removed the window slats and the rest of the context from those panels, you'd have the makings of a kickoff contest: "What's Kris doing?" I can think of six speculative answers.

Behind the scenes art is totally my jam!

Love the WIP sketches! the selfie is next level commitment! I can usually google the image/pose I need nowadays. but I still photo my own hand when necessary

In these sort of situations, I try to pretend I'm someone else arguing on my behalf. I'm WAY better at sticking up for my friends than myself, and I think most other people are too, so harness that!

"Binary's too mainstream" oh dear, this should be fun 😂

I am thinking they do not want to get on the wrong side of things with an internationally known artist who contributes to the local community. Who knows what havoc a few well placed and truthful signs might do to their business? Not to mention local print media! The news reporters love this stuff! "Local woman's vehicle damaged due to faulty maintenance by local auto shop's negligence." "Local auto shop loses business as no one wants to have their engines run out of oil due to their incompetence." You could make posters to help explain it to the slower thinkers? Or you could show up with a gang of "cousins" (you know, your people) to explain to the shop the legal, ethical and business reasons to hit up their own insurance company for the repair costs. (One would think they would insure against such eventualities and one hopes their insurance goes up if this is a repeated occurrence.) Something similar happened to my spouse's Simca, back in the '60s. If I remember the story correctly, they left the drain plug off (She didn't get a block before the red light came on and could see the trail of oil!) and they weren't very helpful until her father showed up, in uniform (Navy Chief) and started getting very loud, which embarrassed her at the time but got the results she needed. I think the Simca was cursed as it ended it's days being totaled by a fire truck, luckily no one was injured.

MINE TOOOO so I'm glad you're into it, too!

I've finally gotten to the point where I realized that I was spending more time SEARCHING for the exact pose I wanted than it would take to just take my own (I've started taking video instead of still photos, and just screenshotting when the right pose strikes). I think I've just gotten very picky!

dcorsetto

Haha I didn't think anyone could read that! It actually says NONbinary's too mainstream so she's gonna be extra wild.

I hate leaning on my tiny bit of fame in this town, but yeah, I hope at least one of them knows I could destroy their reputation in a heartbeat if that's all the leverage I have! Ryan's already insisted I have his mom call and destroy them over the phone, which she would enjoy, but I too have my reputation to keep intact, so I'm trying to buck up and do this on my own. (I've also considered going down there with Ryan himself, but I think a lawyer would be more useful.) As much as I hate that the intimidation of a Large Respected Man works, I'm glad it worked for your spouse! (Simcas are such cute cars!! Sorry it was TOTALLED!)

Omg I love the idea of taking video for action pose references!!!!! I was working yesterday on an illustration of a beefy Croc-headed warrior swinging a sword, and after wayyy too long searching for the right pose with the arm angles, I finally ended up using myself for reference. It was SO satisfying to get the forearm to look at least "good enough" since that pose has been stumping me for WEEKS (along with vacation and day-job obligations getting in the way)

Jaeger

Super excited for you about getting to return to drawing on the big paper!! Looking at that pic of the inks and seeing that subtle paper texture, I can really picture the satisfaction of blocking out those panels and making big bold lines with the Good Pens. Hurray for ET's return!!!

dcorsetto

Oh man, arms are the HARDEST!! (Imo!) Glad you got in there with the camera, congrats on getting it "good enough!" Yeah, taking video instead of still photos has been a total gamechanger for me. It's much easier to go through an entire pose (in your case, SWINGING a sword, albeit in slow motion) so that the pose feels REAL. Additionally, a lot of stock photos have poor acting. Like you can tell the models were told to "look natural" but then had to hold a pose long enough, or given too many conflicting prompts, that they couldn't balance their bodies the way they would if they were actually doing The Thing.

Yay getting back to it! And you can get them to pay for Julie, I believe in you! Bring Luke! ;)

"like running with trainers on" I understand each of those words, but not in that order. I thought 'trainers' was to Brittish what 'tennis shoes' is to American. I guess there probably are specific shoes for playing tennis. What in heck are trainers, and how does running in them feel?

dcorsetto

Oh my god, I've been using this phrase for decades and probably confused a LOT of people! I was thinking of the heavier shoes that we wore 30 years ago in my cross-country team; they made practicing a little bit harder, making us go a tiny bit faster on race day. I think they're called cross-trainers? I don't even know if that's a practice that everyone uses, or just one that WE used! Thank you for taking the time to ask, thus making me question this phrase that I've been using incorrectly all along!!

dcorsetto

We've joked about bringing Ryan because he's HUGE and takes zero shit, but he also has never had a license and doesn't know much about cars! (He'd still be intimidating, it'd just be privately hilarious to bring him to a mechanic's shop!)

dcorsetto

Okay, so after a tiny rabbithole search... I THINK I had that right, although it'd rely on the context that you wear super lightweight shoes when you race. So you'd wear your everyday trainers when you practice, and get used to the extra weight, and really FLY when you put on your sleek little racing shoes. Anyway, if someone's reading this and has a better phrase for "practicing something with an added handicap that you can remove when it counts," please chime in because I'm grasping for a phrase that I can't find!

Joe & Rebekah Bishop

I don't think you have been using it incorrectly, it's just a slightly niche reference.

Amy Crook

Just bring him to be Strong and Silent behind you, haha. And yes, always hilarious to take a non-car person to a mechanic as backup!

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Thinking of a mystery in a book that starts with "My roof was repaired by [So and so company] and it STILL LEAKS!" the mystery was the head of the company was "kidnapped" and you have to prove he wasn't (he staged it due to the bad press he was getting)

Oooo Faber Castell pit fude pens ❤️ There really is something about jumping back into real tactile media. Ink on bristol is *chef kiss* I always love seeing how the sausage is made because there's a combo of "hey I do that too!" and "daannnng that's a good idea how to figure out X" May the fury of knowing you are in the right fuel your car drama conquering! You may be a tiny mouse, but if Mrs. Brisby can do it, so can you!
