Happy Friday, folks! I've barely talked about Halloween here, even though it's been the focus of every little minute of down-time I've had all month. Luke and I are, as always, busy putting together our costumes for the big Halloween party at my house this weekend...

I didn't even consider a wardrobe malfunction. 😬 So confident in my sewing skills am I!!

I'll show y'all the final costume next week! (It's more PG than it looks, I promise.) (Kind of.)

Here's the original art for this one! Scroll down for your Patreon-buddy 50% off discount code!

As you may recall, Pip had an emergency vet visit this summer for uhhh... Supreme Constipation, aggravated by his steadily climbing weight. At his recent vet visit, he weighed in at 23.5 pounds and the vet said the dreaded word: "DIET."

So I bought one of those expensive fancy microchip-activated pet feeders, and programmed it so just Ollie and Fennel can get to the regular food...

I've never hit BUY NOW on an expensive piece of tech so fast. His emergency vet bill was $600, so I'm justifying the purchase by assuming it'll keep us from doing THAT again.

Here's the original art for this comic about my most annoying, clever, hefty and beloved Pip!

An update on my physical and mental status:

I caught what Luke had, but by the time I put the finishing touches on this comic, it'd passed by both of us. Luckily it was a quick & mild one! (Here's the original art!)

Regarding that very late puzzle sample...

A puzzle is something to do while you hang out with your friend, that gives you a sort of hourglass for how long you can hang out! Okay, maybe I like puzzles after all.

Do other puzzle people feel like it has an "hourglass" effect? It took us a little under 4 hours, which gave us plenty of time to talk about all the things we wanted to catch up on.

Here's the link to buy that puzzle, in case you missed it!

And here's the original art for the above comic!

And finally, here's one spooOOOooky comic to send you off for your Halloween weekend...

Epilogue:

FINE fine I'll do both, I'll do booooth.

Here's the original art for both of these! Remember to use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for 50% off, my beloved Patreon friends! Thank you for being here and supporting my extremely busy comic-makin', bench-paintin', golden-underwear-sewin' ass!

I realized this week that I forgot to share the results of our jack-o'-lantern night earlier this month! Ryan and I (respectively) put a few hours into shaving the pumpkin flesh down to make some creepy teeth:

Karli did a classic o'Lantern (top); Jon joined Ryan & me in our quest for piles of pumpkin shavings (the little cat in the moon from Sailor Moon); Allison did a lovely homage to our dear Steven who was taken too soon from us this year (bottom, in the hat)..

... and Leslie carved the teeniest pumpkin to nestle into the wings of this bird-shaped gourd:

Amanda whoops-ed the front of her pumpkin, so she did a quick job of the opposite side and carved a six-seven into it, hoping it'd make the kids cringe...

... and offered it as a sacrifice to the Squirrel Gods, because we knew they'd come to the front of the house eventually to eat the rest of them, but maaaaaybe an offering of free pumpkin stuffed with corn would keep them at bay a little longer (it bought us a couple of days!).

Here they are lit up!

Within a week, all the exposed teeth had been chewed out, and this week half of them have been dragged out into the street every night by the squirrels. Maybe next year I'll propose doing jack-o'-lanterns the week before Halloween!

I think that's all for now. I hope you get to eat a sensible amount of your favorite candy this weekend, and that you see some really good costumes on kids, dogs, or adults at some point!

I'll see you MONDAY for our much-anticipated return to Elephant Town! Have fun and stay safe, friends! πŸ–€πŸ§‘πŸ’œ

Thank you as always for the wonderful comics! Re: kitties who are very mad about reduced food... we've had really good luck with using automatic feeders for many tiny meals, including throughout the night. I'm not sure if the microchip feeder would accommodate that? I have two CatMate 5 bowl automatic feeders that I load up once a day to provide 8 small meals per day which might seem like overkill but which has completely fixed the yowling in wee hours problem. Good luck!!!

And now we know what Pip would do if he had human hands. He can wear a wristwatch with his original, factory-installed paws. But he _can't_ tap at the dial theatrically to underscore how impatient he is to be fed.

Daniel J. Hogan (danieljhogan)

We have 5 cats and I can definitely relate to the struggle of feeding multiple kitties, especially now that one needs specific wet food for his kidneys.

Miranda Schubert

We got that pet feeder! Also then figured out how to make it harder for the other cat to sneak in... (Built-in special button combos to make it so another cat can't stick their head in before it closes and have it stay open. And also a cover we found on Etsy to make the hole smaller, so he couldn't get in next to her either.)

One of the pumpkins on a neighbor's fence posts fell over and broke in half on the sidewalk. I carried it with me during my walk to the library and chucked it at the edge of the wooded area at the side of the building, to make the squirrels feel appreciated. I threw it in a high arc and, as I'd hoped, it smashed to bits in a most satisfying fashion. Perhaps this offering will delay the squirrel community's feasting upon the deliberately-decorative gourds in the rest of the village. One of the shops made a Dolly Parton scarecrow for the front door. They made obvious use of two pumpkins. I don't look forward to seeing a squirrel with its head buried in Dolly's ***s.

2026-11-03 01:00 The hourglass effect is real. Whenever I vist my sister (who lives abroad) for the holidays, we make at least one puzzle together while chatting, listening to a podcast and making or consuming food. It's such a nice way to hang out, catch up and also feel semi-productive, heh.

Yes, I totally relate to Pip wanting to be fed *now*. My cat is very determined that way as well.

The golden underwear brings Rocky (of the Horror (Picture) Show) to my mind. I can see sort of PG ways of doing that, too. I hope we see the final suit next week! I did watch the movie recently, after the passing of Tim Curry. I think that’s why it’s the first thing that popped into my mind! Could be something else, of course.

We had to do the same! Fastest door closing, the add-on to prevent sneaking from the side... but the "bigger" cat would still shove his way in and ferociously chomp even as the door closed. A cover to make the open smaller sounds like it would have been a good next step! BUT πŸ˜… we built what we call the 'kitten chute' - a cardboard flume-like frame which prevents the big guy from squeezing in next to the 'kitten' (she's 8 years old but still getting called "the kitten" πŸ˜†) and by the time she backs out of his way, he can't get to her feeder before the door is closed. So he's [mostly] stopped trying. (now I'll have to look for that cover on Etsy!)

Josh Smift

The golden underwear is great. :^ ) But if this isn't too nosy a question: What *are* you doing in the next to last panel of that one?

Amy Crook

Everyone in our house is on a feeding schedule but Mal, who spends a lot of time getting me to let her into the room where the food is, and out, and in, and out. XD Those feeders are dope but I can't imagine having 7 of them....

Luke Steichen

My money is on a Rocky Horror related costume, hence the golden underoos.

Babs New

I don't know if you saw my costume yet but it's my least PG one so far haha :]

Omg is this an annoying orange pumpkin??

Tim Pendergast

Never being a morning person, I learned very early on to feed my cats at night.

Aww, at your tribute pumpkin (and the li'l cutie!) I always time myself doing puzzles, got semi-addicted to "challenge" puzzles like the "mystery" ones that don't have the picture on the box, or ones with no edge pieces! I do say semi-addicted, bc they cost a lot for essentially one-time use (at least the "mystery" ones) and also what do I do with them afterward (esp. the one-use ones)... other than the ones with an image I love =D

Poor Pip 😟 While you're on a roll, wanna hop on a plane? There's a bathroom sink right here needing to be unclogged of hair…

Takanno

I do always enjoy your weekly comics, I'm glad you kept them up. I'm also really glad to hear the cars approaching sorted (fingers crossed) and wanted to let you know I'm very proud of how brave you were in making those calls, they are scary and difficult and you absolutely deserve your engine fixed free of charge just for dealing with that. Hope the gilded hotpants were a success, looking forward to an update next week :)

I've decided that a perfect merch companion to Lucy Bellwood's "100 Demon Dialogues" demon would be your "Life" critter. It should weigh fifteen to twenty pounds and have long arms so you can wear it with its arms wrapped around your neck.

dcorsetto

I had one of those 5-bowl feeders, they're great! Ahh I'm glad that works for you! I just started filling my cats' microchip-activated feeders at night so they'll be full throughout the night, that seems to be working for now. :)

dcorsetto

Hah! The cat-shape is hilarious! Fingers crossed Pip won't bully his way into the other cats' feeder (luckily he likes his own dry food!).

dcorsetto

Fair question! I'm pulling the crotch of the two sides (front and back) together to see where it should connect!

dcorsetto

The manual says you can program it for *32* different microchips and I about fell over thinking about having 32 ats!

dcorsetto

!! Do you have a photo on IG somewhere?

dcorsetto

That wasn't the intention but now I know what I wanna do for NEXT year!

dcorsetto

Holy shit both of those "challenge" examples make my head spin! Incredible!

dcorsetto

Wehh I just saw this!! πŸ˜™πŸ˜™πŸ˜™πŸ˜™πŸ˜™

dcorsetto

Hah! "Life Critter" would always mean well but just constantly leave you on the floor gasping for air.
