I haven't been posting Elephant Town pages to Instagram lately, because I was hung up on the idea of getting this page completely finished first (if you'll recall, I posted the digital draft a few weeks ago when I shared it with y'all, because I didn't have time to properly finish it!).

Here's a comparison of the two:

I'm not sure how many of you have noticed, but I'm using a very faint color for each character's linework. Miranda's is a soft dark gold color; Kris's is dark violet red; Paul is blue, and Berto is green. It's REALLY noticeable when you see the effect next to a page with black linework (like the one on the left)!

The black linework really pops, but I still like the dreamlike quality that comes from that slightly-colored linework. :)

So, just for the sake of clarity: the left page was drawn and colored entirely in Procreate with black linework, and the one on the right was inked with black ink on paper, scanned in, and colored (including changing the linework to that soft gold) in Photoshop.

Really I could just do all this stuff digitally and I'd be the only person who cared, but I wouldn't get to enjoy that sweet sweet inking stage, and I wouldn't have original artwork of each page afterwards. ;)

I also made a few adjustments to the pages following this one - including giving the anemone a mouth (!!) - but I'll repost those here when I have the high-res versions finished. I hope you don't mind basically being my editors on these pages; you're seeing them before I tweak them for the website, and then I'm sure they'll go through a final series of edits for the book in about a zillion years!

Here's an imbedded version of the final page, in case the one up top isn't ideal for your viewing platform o' choice!

I'm off to go sledding for an hour or two. If you were in the path of the east coast snowstorm, I hope you're finding a way to enjoy it!!

They both look nice, but the gold lineart does pop!

I'm curious about your process, why did you ink it (and colour it) in Procreate then, if you were going to ink it traditionally anyway? Was it to finish a presentable version in time for your patrons?

Monica Gallagher

So beautiful! And hats off always to your methodical processing! <3

Oh I normally don't go through all that trouble. In this case, something - I think it was the studio tour? - kept me from inking my digital pencils, and I just decided to skip the inking stage and see if I could hash out a decent digital coloring job with Procreate on the pencils. The pencils almost always look so close to the inks (as evidenced above!), I figured I could share what I had as an update here, then go back and properly ink + Photoshop the page (hi res!!) for the website & book later.

(Oh pfft, you guessed it in the last sentence, I skipped right over that! YES.)
