I was SO EXCITED to see so many Drive fans in the house last week!!

This is the project I teased last Monday: a guest comic for Dave Kellett's sci-fi webcomic Drive. I'm just drawing it - the 18-page script was written by another long-time webcomic creator whom, if you know Dave, you may also know, wink wink*.

If you're familiar with Drive, you're familiar with Taneel, their starship captain. She's generally a no-nonsense firecracker, but in this story, she gets to loosen up a little bit.

I took the liberty of crafting a new outfit for her, one that maintains the stiff professionalism of her everyday uniform and demands respect, but still gives her a bit of class and style.

It's yet to be seen if this outfit will be acceptable - I sent off the penciled pages to Dave and the writer Sunday, so we'll see!

Here are a few of my favorite closeups of Taneel (this is what my Elephant Town pencils look like, too - for some reason I find the red color to be soothing to work with):

(Blue drawing at the bottom is Dave's drawing, red ones are mine.)

And here's a script-censored full page to show you how I handle backgrounds in the penciling stage (attention: art nerds):

Just makes it easier to see what I'm doing.

Who's that floppy-eared, mustachioed, square-spectacled fellow? Why that's Daryl. I'll introduce him soon!

*Did you know that we're collectively referred to as "The Old Guard" of webcomics now? I hit the tail end of the Old Guard, much like I hit the tail end of Gen X. Forever a late adopter!

Re: Late adopter. I feel you -- I'm a late-Boomer (b. '62). Always felt late to the cultural party, even when you Gen-Xers started doing all kindza cool shit. (Insert rant about younger brother's taste in music, film, etc. that I disdained as a youth and now see was awesome.)

Ooh, I am just so excited for this!!

Drazi

Please don't remind me how long we've been around. It's slightly terrifying lol

Tudza

The uniform make over is just way classy. With that on she should be an admiral or something.

We're both Gen-X?! Cool! Whoops. I meant to say "Oh. I guess. Whatever." (shrugs, sighs, un-pauses Hüsker Dü on the CD Discman, sighs again)

*grunts acknowledgement, continues lacing up an old pair of Doc Martens*

Pavel Curtis

I'm so looking forward to seeing this!
