I may have mentioned before that I host an Art Night (aka drink & draw & snack & socialize) every Monday night with my friends, where I try to avoid doing "work" art, and just do "play" art.

Lately I've been trying this fun little exercise where I place colors right next to each other on my paper with watercolor, and seeing where it takes me.

This was painted on a block of Fluid watercolor paper, which is absolute trash. Don't be fooled by the pretty front cover. Don't buy this shit unless you want the splotchy "little kid painting" look that you see here.

I decided to use straight black paint on top of this, which is a color I've been brainwashed into never using.

(My professors weren't wrong; you should only use black if you really want a flat black, like this. If you mix your own black, it'll be super rich, so it's worth learning how to do!)

After I did this little exercise, I promptly forgot that the paper is total garbage, and used the same paper for my next practice: a strong silhouette of a horse (I was a horse girl growing up, so I can still draw a horse from memory easy-peasy), filled with fractals of color right next to each other:

This was a super fun experiment! I wanted to flow sections of analogous colors (very similar colors, like blues + purples) into each other to see how it'd look.

I find this sort of thing really satisfying, so here are a bunch of closeups:

Once I had the horse down, I decided to zero in on Le Season and make some Christmas trees:

I've still been trucking away (no pun intended, he never owned a truck) at my dad's now-belated 70th birthday gift:

Fingers crossed it'll be done before Christmas! I'll show y'all the final cars once they're all done, of course.

Wish me luck with these last three slick-looking (kinda boring imo) vehicles!!

Love the trees! Might try and copy them for some fun with pencils 😄

I have now watched videos on mixing black! How to make the absence of color with colors. A concept I had never thought about before. I love your Art for the art and I love that your posts make me think about process.

A horsie *and* a car! You truly are a masochist. :-) Nice job on both. (All you need now are hands, a bicycle and a crowd scene.)

Douglas Appelt

The one with the black background really POPS. Love it1

William Cole

I love all the Christmas trees!

Jessica Bernard

I would literally purchase that horse, it's gorgeous and whimsical and I'm in love.

And I adore all of the trees you made 💜 Merry Whatever!

I loathe the idea of getting a new car just bc they all LOOK THE SAME so what's even the diff

If you ever publish an (adult) coloring book in this style, I would totally buy it, just saying…

Wow! I love these so much! Well counterintuitively, you've now convinced me I need to use that cheap watercolor paper!

Steve Boyko

I love love love those trees!

Theadora

Ah, but for artists, black is not the absence of color, but *all* the colors! It's only for lighting techs that black is the absence of color! ;-)

Kevin Ruderman

Dear Theadora, Spooky! How did you see into my very soul? I may have pretended to be a computer guy for lo these many years but in my heart of hearts I'm still a techie on my high school stage hanging Lekos and Fresnels. If you need me I'll be in the back of the auditorium running the 2x24 dimmer, cross-fading two scene preset board. Gawd I loved that thing. Being a stage tech was probably the starter drug for why I became a computer guy. :-) Be well. Regards, Kevin
