I still made it to my parents' house last week for a post-Christmas celebration! And came home to this post-Christmas "celebration."

Fennel has started love-biting the tender part of my arm in my sleep! Just to add to the list of telltale signs. Thanks, Fennel, merry Christmas.

I spent two hours on the first daily of the year, just to kick the year off right! (It's marked 12/31, but I draw each day's comic the next morning, so this was my first one of 2024.)

Pip didn't actually puke. He can hold his liquor.

And I did like the year I started for me.

For starters, Monday fell on the first of the year, and we decided to have Art Night as we always do on Mondays! No one was hungover. Being responsible-ish early-middle-age people is great.

I switched using one and two fingers on this comic! It's wild, that middle finger gets in the way and swoops my lines in unwanted directions sometimes. But lettering and drawing straight lines requires the support of that middle finger, and unfortunately, using just my first finger made my wrist hurt by the end. I've been mindfully switching to one finger when I need to get an expression right that I'm not quite getting with two fingers, but I anticipate I'll mostly stick to the two-finger method.

This has been Overthinking Your Drawing Process with Danielle Corsetto. Thank you for reading.

I dunno what I was expecting, but I was definitely expecting it to be BETTER.

Here's a petty comic about not getting what you absolutely do not want:

In case you missed it, the list of artists that Midjourney uses to train its "AI" on* was released, and it's a real roller coaster! It is VERY WEIRD (but not surprising) to see so many of my webcomics peers on there, but then also weird because of who they didn't include. Randall  Munroe of XKCD is on there, but Lar deSouza isn't. For that matter, Andrew Wyeth (one of my favorite artists) is on there, but his father NC Wyeth (who I would've guessed was on there, based on the vibrance of the colors that Midjourney spits out) is not.

Anyway, nobody WANTS to be on this list, but nobody wants to be catcalled either, and in short I'm glad I'm not on the list, but pissed that Jamie is. If you wanna support Jamie's work elsewhere, he's on Patreon and you can follow him on Instagram! He also puts out some really high-quality YouTube videos.

*I'm pretty sure this is still not ACTUALLY "AI," we just keep calling it that because it's scary-powerful. It's not actually intelligent. Intelligence is what made the people on that list worth being trained on.

The internet says surimi (imitation crab meat/crab stick) is the "hot dog of the sea," but I beg to differ. Luke is spot-on.

Speaking of fishballs, do you know Fishball? Her comics are some of my favorite on the Internet, if you've never read them!

One of my 2024 resolutions is to share one of my dailies on Instagram every week, just to let people know I'm still alive. It's a real cobweb show over there right now.

I'm gonna make this first-of-the-year post public, as well; if you're visiting and you're not a patron of mine, but you want to be, you can join as low as $2/month and keep seeing my dailies every week! I'm on hiatus from Elephant Town until sometime in February, but you'll start seeing those pages as soon as I start making them again. :)

And to anyone who joined just recently, thanks for hopping in! I hope you like cats.

Yeah, the Midjourney list is weird. Our two favorite list entries are Ryan North and Ryan Sohmer - go figure. (We're guessing that Sohmer is on the list because they only took the first of two names listed for LICD and/or LFG, which also explains why Lar wasn't on it.) I, too, didn't make the list - which makes loads of sense as that would have meant that they were scraping the bottom of the barrel (as my last comic stated).

dcorsetto

Ooohh, good point on Sohmer! I didn't even think about looking for his name, that makes a lot of sense. Makes me wonder if by Ryan North they trained Midjourney on his dinosaur clipart, or actually Erica Henderson's art.

dcorsetto

She DID!! She also dyed it again afterwards, though. (She's going through a phase.)

kaitou

I'm guessing the Erica Henderson art. But I wouldn't put it past them to scrape the clipart. (Did wonder about both.)

There was a huge set of threads on Bluesky. Not so much on Twitter/X.

David Neale-Lorello

HNY Danielle! Thanks for making my year (last and this) better!

Jamie Noguchi

Thanks for the love, D! I reached out to that law firm that issued the complaint so we'll see if that goes anywhere. There are 16,000 artists on that list!!! I'm super pissed and kinda feel a bit helpless, but we keep keeping on because that's all we know how to do. Which is also kinda concerning

My spouse can't tell the cats apart when it's dark in the room but I can: Kaylee's shoulders are broader and her tail is thicc and shorter than Buzz's, my slender, svelte little monster with a looooong tail. Also Buzz is the one who usually turns off my CPAP by stepping directly on the button, Kaylee is the one who wants to be *between the humans*, and Buzz is the one who alternates between sleeping on spouse's feet and attacking mine if I dare move. The things we put up with for the love and purrs X-D

Margreet de Heer

Love these! I'm in at the 2 dollar level now!

What a start. The ai trash is everywhere. I hope they go broke. I wish Vincent would go under the covers with me, but I'll accept how often I can use his butt as a pillow because he shoves his ass in my face and by my head all the time. I haven't read anything on Webtoon in forever, I've been reading a lot of gay comics on Lezhin recently, but I enjoyed reading Fishball's comic a lot.

I think I see the problem with your new laptop - you forgot to order it with NEW AND IMPROVED internet... :D

dcorsetto

I get lost in all those add-ons!

Much of Adulting is actually self-parenting, isn't it? The purpose of 80% of what I do in the kitchen is to just make it easy to throw a proper, healthy meal together later in the week. I stop _just_ short of leaving a note on the fridge door with reheating instructions, signed "Love, Mom."

Andy Ihnatko

I'm both intrigued by the potential of generative art as a legitimate creative tool (particularly how it could empower people whose imaginations far exceed their technical skill), and pleased/adamant that the legality of these existing AI models is being tested in court. Worldwide, courts are already unanimous in the conclusion AI-generated works aren't entitled to copyright protection, which is very encouraging. I hope we're headed towards a "reset" of the technology (so to speak), where all of these models are rebuilt and trained solely from material that's either in the public domain or has been properly licensed for that purpose.

Honestly I just want everything that's created via prompt & learning to be very clearly credited to the program that made it, not just the person who wrote the prompt. I wonder how our feelings toward human-made art and writing will shift once the use of these prompt-to-product services becomes ubiquitous; maybe we'll see the imperfect, evolving, single-style artwork of a human as something precious and beyond our grasp.

Andy Ihnatko

I imagine (but am not predicting) that the field will settle into two types of uses. One kind be fully-automated, "insert prompt, receive art" AI. Civilians will use it the same way that they use stock-image libraries today, except the software will generate "photo of an office worker destroying a laptop inside a microwave oven" instead of doing a keyword search for existing images. And there will also be software that simply feels like another part of an artist's toolkit. Like, you need a street scene in two-point perspective for your background, so you take a bunch of cans and boxes out of your pantry, arrange them on a table like how you want the buildings and street and cars and people to go, take a snapshot with your phone, and then tell the AI "The Cheerios box is an office building; the kosher salt box is a drugstore, put a car everywhere you see a playing card...every Lego minifigure should be a pedestrian..." Etc. etc. I don't think handmade, single-person artwork will ever become quaint or rare. I think once everything settles down, it'll be much like how iPad artists are still drawing by hand, with a pen...except that the pen is how they tell a piece of software where the pixels should go and what they should look like, instead of the tool that actually lays pigment onto paper. (But for real? Who knows.)

happy new year! mmmfishballs. tbh Instagram is basically unusable now, for every post i actually wanted to see i get at least one ad AND at least one sponsored post, so there's literally no reason for me to check it anymore.

Kevin Ruderman

Andy: New fridge door note: "Salted Cheerios" is not a meal. "Love, Mom"

dcorsetto

I feel about the same way. Idk when this happened, but at some point last year I switched my viewing experience over to watching stories 90% of the time (instead of scrolling, for the reason you mentioned) - it's so much easier to swipe past ads on stories, I just got used to using IG that way. I think I've kind of gamified the experience - if I want to see what my friends are up to, I have to machete through ads to get to them. It's weirdly satisfying? Ugh, I guess they got what they wanted outta me!

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I sifted through that list a little, and ARIN HANSON IS ON IT?? LOLOLOLOL

Tudza

You manage to get all the stuff you needed off the old laptop?

dcorsetto

Easily! Deactivating Photoshop was easy, and I use Dropbox for cloud storage (it's basically my entire "hard drive.")

Tudza

So prepared. Respect!
