Happy Friday evening to you! These would have gone up earlier, but I forced myself to finish setting up Photoshop on my NEW LAPTOP so I could use the screen mirroring option to tweak this week's comics using my iPad, which took ALL DAY. The setting-up part, not the tweaking on my iPad part! That part was fast. This shit is MAGIC.

(Pip helped.)

Would my $5 Art Nerd tier be interested in a little demo of which brushes I picked, and how screen mirroring works between devices? Say something in the comments if you're in. :)

Here's a dreamy little pair of comics to start us off:

I've been scooting around google street view a little too much.

I find the topic terrifying.

It was a VERY cute posh little collection, but the word "aroma" could have been a bit more pronounced. They did smell nice. They tasted like nothing.

Does everyone call this the fucking Hamburger Menu? Am I just old??

Okay I know but it is COMFORTABLE, like I don't wanna get out of bed comfortable!! It should last me a couple more years. (I'll tell you the same thing about my 16-year-old car.)

"Grown-Up Hazel" borrowed from this old GWS strip, wherein Hazel's good fortune parallels mine starting here.

And I didn't do a daily this morning because... well, because you'll find out next week. :) Have a lovely weekend, patreon pals!

I call it a hamburger menu, but also I'm a Web developer so I don't think I count.

Drazi

Yah, it's a hamburger menu. Yah, I agree. I don't know why they named it that either. How do you rinse out something upsidedown?

Dave Van Domelen

Wisdom is also closing your eyes and tilting your head back before closing a sack of cat food or one of those big bags of breakfast cereal.

dcorsetto

I completely get it - three thick lines look like bread, meat, bread - but I have never ever heard anyone use that term before now! Ah, good question. I forgot to draw my other hand below the spoon, flushing the underside of the spoon with reflected water.

dcorsetto

oh motherfucker I was HOPING you were joking

dcorsetto

YES. This is exactly in the same category. Correct.

Thomas Blanc

Sorry, but I don't get the last case of the 3rd strip. Wisdom is...? That must be US related and I'm not from USA.

dcorsetto

Oh yeah, I didn't consider that. Retirement fund.

sjlxndr

The number refers to a section of the tax code; it's a retirement account (tax deferred savings/investment)

Thomas Blanc

Thank you Danielle and Stephen!

Ken Carlile

It took me a _long_ time to figure out what the heck a hamburger menu is (and I'm an IT guy). And I agree, it's a stupid name. :)

Miranda Schubert

Came here to say almost the exact same thing! Twinsies! Really, I hear it called a hamburger menu all the time, but I try to resist because I think it's dumb. I tend to go with "menu button" until someone is confused and I have to be more specific... But yeah, definitely common in web developer lingo.

Miranda Schubert

Oh, now this one I hadn't heard before (as a web developer). Less common, I guess.

Félix Saparelli

the names come from google's design language; also lesser known is the meatball menu (no, still not kidding) for the horizontal version

pfreya

Yeah, mobile dev here agreeing — it’s goofy! Not sure who leaked all our trade lingo, but I’ve been seeing “hamburger menu” and “meatball menu” popping up everywhere recently. (Which is extra alarming, since *everyone* knows the three-dots-menu is a falafel menu, smh)

Amanda Perkins

I was today years old when I learned the term "hamburger menu." So. Not just you.

Nancy H

I've been a tech writer for 10yrs and our pages have a hamburger menu but I didn't know it was called that until last year. :p in the club.

pfreya

Would love to see a demo!

Tim Pendergast

I think the hamburger menu has been called the stack menu a couple of times but it seems mostly in our wonderful post ASCII world people just insert an image of it rather than calling it anything.

Jason

Ok, now you know about the hamburger menu. Time to look up the rest: kebab menu, meatball menu, and waffle menu. I swear I am not making these up. 🙂

Jason

The kebab menu, for example, is three dots stacked vertically and the meatball menu is the dots running horizontally (I called that an ellipsis menu before I knew the name, because I am a nerd.) Not that any of that helps anybody in conversarions, because very few people know they are called that. 🤣

David Wright

I've had dreams (although, not recently) in which I jumped over something and then decided I could stay in the air -just- a bit longer if I needed to, and it's a big bush, so I'll just stay up a bit more. Not exactly flying, just not landing.

Monica Gallagher

Coming into (well deserved) money and then spending it on maintenance is SO relatable, I LOVE YOU (also hope you get all the treats you want!)

Alenka Figa

My first library job was teaching people to use computers, so I know hamburger menu from teaching/making tech glossaries!

Mia Jaeggli

I've had to spend way too much time considering hamburger menus lately. Even considered running a usability test. Ugh. Life of a UI designer. But, I'm really into the idea of a plant that absorbs people's hair.

William Cole

I first heard the term maybe a dozen years ago in design circles. It was used disparagingly: UX people considered it bad practice to shove all your "extra" options & actions behind an icon so unintuitive. I guess they lost that war because the name stuck and the menus became ubiquitous.

David Neale-Lorello

Do you actually put “WTF” in your searches? 😍💕 I HAVE to start doing that, if only as an act of rebellion.

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Wisdom is also not turning the tap on FULL BLAST EVERY DANG TIME when you only need a trickle of water anyway

Minzoku Bokumetsu

also I'm having the LOVELIEST WEEKEND bc I have ALL OF NEXT WEEK AND SOME CHANGE off from work!

Sherri French

I know the 3 lines are called a hamburger, but I come from the world of computer programming. I wouldn't expect everyone to know what it's called. It definitely seems silly the first time you hear it!

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

It only should double-tapping on reality automatically move us to the tapped location, but we should also get our steps when doing so

Margreet de Heer

Love 'em! Especially the dental floss adventures. That's actually how my husband and I met! (well not exactly, but a mirror and dental grooming were involved)

Jessica Bernard

Me too! Mine was kinda like Hitchhiker's Guide where you miss the ground? I kinda just kept falling instead of landing, but not necessarily flying.

Summer Lander

I would love to geek out over brushes and screen mirroring

Tracy

Love all of these! I would love a video with your spiffy new computer set up and brushes!

Laura Kolker

Re hamburger menu - I only ever hear my developer colleagues call it that. Also one of them clued me into the three dots one being called a kebab menu. I think I heard that for the first time a whole two years ago. Seems like inside baseball to me, even being a dev. I guess it needed a name tho. I can't think of them as anything else now.

dcorsetto

I DO!! I figure it'll come out with about the same results anyway, so why not get the frustration out of my system while I'm at it. ;)

dcorsetto

Oooo that's some good dream shit!

dcorsetto

Hahaha thank you I LOVE YOU TOO and I love that my teeth are finally getting DEEP CLEANED!! <- adult treats!!

dcorsetto

Oh shiiiiit nice!! I hope you sleep in every single day (if you want to).

Steve Boyko

I've heard it called a hamburger menu, but I don't like it. One bit.

Leslie Carter

Yow, Photoshop?? Its mere mention makes me wanna cry and hide behind my ol' pencils and eraser! Congrats on taming that dragon in your laptop!

Paul Bonser

I've done web development for like 20 years and it was embarrassingly recently that I found out it was called a hamburger menu. Ok, maybe like 6 years ago. Also I think the kebab menu should be called a "dango menu" instead. Those actually have three circular things most of the time, whereas a kebab with only 3 round things on it would be weird.

Paul Bonser

I usually just call it "the three dots menu" or "the three lines menu" because that's much more obvious if someone hasn't heard the name.

Cathi Andrews

I'm up for anything you want to share, so I'd defs be reading/viewing a post on your new setup.

Laura Kolker

It feels more like an affectionate nickname than a proper name really.

Pete Jordan

Just "menu" or "menu icon" for me; I've heard the term, but never felt the need to use it… #GrumpyOldDev

Pete Jordan

Grown up Hazel? *Grown up* Hazel??? 😄

will davison

I only learned of “hamburger menu” in the last year. Also, an ellipsis button is also called a meatball menu. Who forgot to feed the GUI designers?! Edit: someone else pointed out Grown-Up Hazel and I followed your link. 50 pages of GWS and I think you hooked me into another read through.

NJGR

I call it a hamburger menu, but I used to do web design so I cheated. I also know the meatball, kebab, Döner, and bento (or chocolate box) menus. 🫠

Sarah Hale

I'd love to watch a demo of the brushes and how screen mirroring works!

dcorsetto

Photoshop is like my third hand, I can't quit it just yet! (Also, while it takes a LOT of time, it's possible to set it back to all legacy settings, which is what I spent all week doing!)

H

I had very nearly this exact experience of learning the phrase "hamburger menu" like two years ago, and I ostensibly make software for a living 😬
