This movie felt like stepping into a perfectly constructed magic trick. I was completely hooked by the very first scene and line. "Are you watching closely???" 👀 This movie felt like an entire experience designed to keep me watching closely, guessing, second-guessing, and still somehow ending up completely surprised. The layers, the rivalry, the heartbreak... and the end? Just wow. Thank you so much to Nick for suggesting this for his Movie Ticket pick! This was the kind of movie that reminds me why I love storytelling soooo much in the first place. And there goes Samwise Gamgee in my brain again 🤣🤍 This movie also happened to be an awesome deeper dive into the world of magic and mystery after The Illusionist.

Yes 🙌 Let’s go! This was one had a stellar cast, you had Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson and Andy Serkis! The ending was crazy, I’ve seen this movie a-bunch of times, and the ending was was just wild 😱

kaliwali

Omg yes! The cast was absolutely staaaacked. I saw Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman on the cover lol. But then Scarlett Johansson and Andy Serkis and Michael Caine showed up!! 👀🔥 Great follow up to your pick, too! enjoy :)

Chase

Thank you 🙏🏽 😊 Kali and Michael Kaine is literally like in every Christopher Nolan movie 😂

Scott S

Nolan rarely disappoints, looking forward you seeing more from the Director.

rubberkidney

the idea that i made you smile irl makes my day.

Omg what a great fracking movie!! You MUST watch Memento now after seeing The Prestige. It will blow your fuzzy little mind into pieces! It’s one of my favorite Christoper Nolan films. Edit: Memento also stars Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) and Joe Pantoliano (Cypher) from the Matrix in it.

kaliwali

Memento has been recommended before, but I had no idea it was a similar experience! Very cool definitely excited to see that one eventually!

Russell Rutigliano

Most Nolan films (Outside his Batman films) are all fuck with your head movies. Every single one of them. He loves to make you think and pay attention to the tiniest little details while watching one of his movies. He’s one of the greatest* filmmakers of our time.

It's a really well done movie with a crazy twist. My problem is, every time I see Hugh Jackman in a movie, I can only think about him as "The Wolverine" That character in the comics has been my favorite since I was 10 years old and he kills in that role. I even drink out of a Wolverine coffee mug every morning. #fanboy

I watched this movie for the first time last week with no expectations. And throughout I found myself having to pay attention twice as hard to keep following along compared to a normal movie... and then I saw Christopher Nolan's name in the credits and it all made perfect sense LOL. What a wild and amazing ride this one was. What really stood out for me was all the reversals. Every time one of them thinks they got the upper hand on the other, it's actually the opposite and they got tricked. And I mean EVERY time, down to the final moment. The way he says "abra kadabra" right as he got hung... it was so eerie, and so perfect right before the big twin reveal. The ultimate "I got you" This is one of those movies that I got an even better appreciation for a couple days after I watched it. After more of it sank in, and I looked back and realized all the things I missed. So to watch this with you now, it's funny that it all seems so obvious now that we know their secrets, but it was so mindbending the first time through. Just like a good magic trick haha. This was a very fun reaction! And was super cool seeing you put the pieces together and figure everything out in real time!

.

What an amazing movie hugh never disappoints in a single movie ive watched of his yeah call me a fanboy lol even bale was really good in this all the performances were great. Are you planning on watching the other nolan movies after this? My biggest recommendation would be inception another eff with your mind type movie and an amazing performance from dicaprio as usual. Also a thriller with crazy reveals is prisoners if you want to watch that.

The most popular theory as to why Borden doesn't seem to know what knot he tied is that each time Angier asks him the question, he's asking the brother who wasn't on the stage that night; making it plausible that Borden actually "didn't know". As is the case with most of Nolan's masterpieces, he seldom gives you ALL the answers. Keep up the great reactions!

Robin Holmes

The tesla machine kind of ruined the theme to me. But the whole premise of "committing your life to one trick" and also how they allude to how the obvious answer is so simple no one will believe it. My first watch I was blown away and never thought of twins. But everytime you rewatch is staring you in the face it's so blatantly obvious. It's also soul-crushing when you hear Sarah say "Not today" because she's with the wrong brother. Also, the foreshadowing where he meets her and her nephew says "Where's his brother?" Considering what happens to the brothers.

Other Chris

I think its read from his diary that part of Borden believed it was the wrong knot and part of Borden believed it wasn’t. It alludes to the fact that there was conflict between the brothers on the truth of it. I believe objectively that it was the hard knot, but the brothers appear to have argued about it. Watching this movie the second time feels like a different movie. Once you know the trick the magic is gone, but it lets you see the characters in a different light having a behind the scenes look. This movie takes you through the emotional process of learning how a trick is performed and the fact that the movie loses and gains something once you know the truth and it’s experienced differently by knowing or not knowing. The movie utilizes the pledge, the turn and the prestige both in context and in the storytelling which is very on brand and meta in a Christopher Nolan sort of way.

Other Chris

You don’t catch it on the first watch, but the movie lays down countless hints throughout that upon seeing it again you wonder how you were ever fooled to begin with! Much like after learning the secret of a trick, you just feel silly when you see it performed again and you aren’t sure how you could have seen it another way.

Scott S

Curious if the explanation of not knowing which knot was used is because he was asking the guy that wasn't there... So he really didn't know.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” - Arthur C. Clarke. This is honestly one of the best films I've seen that deals with rivalry, ego and obsession. Borden & Fallon's obsession with maintaining the illusion (as foreshadowed by their observation of Chung Ling Soo), Angier's ego in not only wanting to be The Prestige and center of attention to receive the applause but his denial Borden wouldn't want the same, and of course the rivalry - reflected in the parallel of the rivalry between Eddison & Tesla. Borden & Fallon are still cruel and callous for emotionally wrecking Sarah & Olivia; Angier is cruel framing Borden for murder and trying to take his daughter away (unbeknownst to him it was Fallon in prison). Going back to Tesla (played by, amazingly, David Bowie) - there's a couple of general Sci Fi theories to how teleportation works. One theory is you dematerialise and some how this disassembled matter travels to its destination where it's reassembled. The other theory is the much darker concept of being perfectly copied and produced at the destination, and destroyed and disintegrated at the point of origin. I think it might even be mentioned a few times in Star Trek and the uneasiness some characters have with it: you die, but now an absolute perfect copy exists - memories and all - that never experienced that death. Tesla did indeed create a teleporter based on this Sci Fi theory - he just never came to the conclusion that death & destruction might be needed to resolve the 'issue' of multiples. Awesome reaction, I really enjoyed the watchalong.

kaliwali

LOL I can totally see why! I've only seen a few movie covers with him on it as Wolverine, so I don't see him as that in this role! But I am like that with a few other actors/actresses and just can't unsee them in their role. Captain America is that way for me, for sure hahaha

kaliwali

YES. Honestly, my brain was feeling super heavy after this watch. Same experience with Interstellar haha. Like a "what just happened to my mind???" kind of experience that you can only feel with a great director and a deep storyline! I definitely loved this movie for that and definitely for the ultimate "I got you" moment that everything boiled up to. There were soooo many things to miss and not pick up on the first time around that definitely make a rewatch of this an absolute must! And I love how you described their tricks as so obvious the second time around because YES. That's why you must never give away your secrets when it comes to magic 😂🤯

kaliwali

Tooootally okay to be a fanboy, especially over Hugh and Bale! They were incredible in this. The fact that I went in with one view and out with a completely different one speaks volumes to the story and acting! I will 100% be jumping into more Nolan films and eventually get to all of them!!

kaliwali

Ahh! YES. I love that theory and it makes complete sense thinking about it now.

kaliwali

I looooove that you explained that watching a second time around makes everything seem blatantly obvious because I feel like that is the entire theme of this movie. "Are you watching closely?" and once a trick is revealed, it loses it's magic and wonder entirely. Another Nolan masterpiece, for sure!

kaliwali

Ahhh, that makes SO much more sense now thinking back to why Borden truly didn't remember which knot he tied. I completely get how watching this a second time around would seem like a completely different movie. Much like going to a magic show and already knowing the big reveal. And even better, knowing the real mechanism behind the big reveal. And honestly, that makes this film such a full circle masterpiece because Nolan gave us the mystery and then told us the secret, so now rewatching it we are watching more closely and paying attention! Genius writing... Wow. Totally loved this movie for just that. Thank you!

kaliwali

Yeah! Someone in the comments mentioned that could be a possibility. That the twin that didn't tie the knot was always the one being asked. There is another theory in the comments that maybe there was conflict between the brothers on which knot was actually tied, so it was just chalked up to not truly knowing!

kaliwali

You laid this out beautifully! And I totally agree that this film is a masterclass in storytelling- Honestly not surprised with Nolan at this point. I walked away with the same heavy brain feeling that I did with Interstellar in all the best ways. Totally agree about Borden & Fallon. They may have been "better" magicians, but they definitely weren't saints either. The way they compartmentalized their lives- literally and emotionally- was pretty devastating to everyone around them and even drove Sarah to her end... Angier's arc was definitely just as brutal, too. His need and ache for applause became his ultimate downfall. It's haunting how he never quite grasps that Borden's devotion wasn't about fame but the actual craft of it. The last line, "You just want to be fooled" hits way different when you realize how much both men sacrificed for an audience's brief moment of wonder. Your breakdown of teleportation theories is so on point. That second one- the idea that a copy lives on while the original dies gives me chills to think about. It makes Angier's trick super tragic. AND YES David Bowie as Tesla? Absolute galaxy-brain casting.

Beat Conductor

I see a lot of people pointing out how many hints are dropped through-out the movie as to what's really happening, but the scene where Borden meets Sarah for the first time gives away the plot of the entire movie. They kill the bird, and the little boy asks "But what about his *brother*". Still Nolan's best movie imo.

Joel P

This film and Whiplash are about the same theme: obsession with being the best and the sacrifice required to achieve it. For Neiman and Fletcher, it was jazz music; for Borden and Angier, it was magic. Both are rivals who hate each other yet drive each other to greatness, regardless of the cost. Great reaction.

kaliwali

Yes! Awesome and true comparison between the two films and their characters. Thank you for sharing that thought!

kaliwali

Going back now to that scene, I see it soooo differently. And I think that's what makes this film actually incredible and genius. Because we, as the audience, try to look closely and pick up on those things but can't just yet. Maybe because we want to be tricked, maybe because we want to wait for the big reveal. But then once the reveal happens, watching the movie again makes it an entirely different experience! Just like sitting at a magic show and already knowing all the tricks. It changes everything.

DarthChef

Bale, Jackman, Johannson, Serkis, and Rebecca Hall...all in the MCU.

This is my idea about the knot. It’s never explicitly stated in the movie, but I believe that one of the Bordens was the one that took bigger risks. He was the one that tied the different knot.. the other Borden was the one that showed up to the funeral so when Angier asked him which not did you tie, he actually didn’t know because he wasn’t the one that did the trick. Once he had committed to that statement that he didn’t know he may have gone and asked the other Borden which knot did you tie but he then couldn’t go back to Angier and say oh I tied this knot because he already told him he didn’t remember.. this is obviously never stated in the movie. It’s just my theory. You see throughout the film how one of the Bordens is a lot less sensitive like he yelling at Sarah in front of Jess. He’s much colder. He’s more obsessed with Angier. The other Borden seems a lot more reasonable. He is the one that keeps advising, Let’s leave Angier alone. He’s the one that’s more loving towards the daughter and even when he deals with Olivia, he’s not mean to her he’s just has boundaries. Whereas you see the other Borden in the restaurant being obnoxious and rude to Sarah. I love how this is set up like a magic trick when Borden is teaching Sarah about the bullet catch she doesn’t understand how it works. It doesn’t quite make sense. She sees it but she doesn’t understand it. Then once he explains it she’s like oh it’s really obvious this movie is just like that the first time you watch it you see all these pieces, but they don’t quite make sense until the end and then you look back and you go oh now I see the whole trick. Really amazing writing by the Nolan Brothers.

mitchhamilton64

i think youre right about the knot but i also think the one who tied the knot, the more agressive one never told his brother which knot he tied out of guilt. i believe the bordon who was shot was the innocent bordon and the more angry one wanted revenge for what he did to his brother, so he sabotaged that one act.

Andriss

months old but, in the movie the one who has shown more compassion, the one who loved sarah said to angier that he has argued with 'himself' over that question but could never get an answer theres one brother, the one who loved sarah that is the more reasonable one and didnt get his hands as dirty, then theres the aggressive magic obsessed one who was in love with olivia. figuring out which one is on screen makes the movie so fun to rewatch and pick up on the hints
