I didn't know how to feel going into this next episode after the last one. But I actually loved it and, apparently, really needed it. It felt like such beautiful closure for Joel. It made his loss feel even more personal and heavy, but in all the good ways. Not in the Abby horror show ways. I was honestly taken back by the council's decision. They still cling to order and rules even when chaos demands flexibility. I feel like this kinda highlights how sometimes systems can fail the people they're meant to protect. I'm glad that Ellie and Dina have each other and still chose to honor Joel, even though their path ahead is clearly dangerous. The WLF's sheer size and strength was intense. It's very clear that the fight ahead for justice and love won't be easy. But it never really is, is it? 2026-09-07 13:00 This is a reaction I was waiting on! This episode is a really good one and is definitely starting to deviate from the second game by a lot of different decisions, but I am loving it. I also agree with you that it was a beautiful send-off for Joel as a character, and I can't wait to watch your reaction!

Dude Longcouch

I can't believe how quickly you get these posted! Early enough that I can squeeze it in tonight and still not be a complete zombie at work tomorrow 😭😂 Thanks for all your hard work!

I’m torn on liking the TV show version of this game. It’s interesting getting your perspective since you didn’t play the game yet. I think your opinion might change when/if you do play the game.

Robert da Spruce

Not sure I’m ready for this Still a little upset from last week

I absolutely LOVED this episode! It honored Joel, addressed gray areas, and brought us into a whole new world of WLF 👀 I'm really glad to hear it deviates from the game so much! It makes me really excited to play it when I can get to it eventually :)

God what an episode this was! I felt the weight of what Ellie went through in the last episode throughout this entire 3rd episode. Dina is an amazing friend! She is ride or die and I LOVE that about her! Ellie’s speech to the council was so powerful and I can’t believe 8 people voted against her after that amazing speech, Bella Ramsey could read a fucking phone book and I’d be intrigued by it. The scene where Ellie (Bella) breaks down and cries into Joel’s (Pedro’s) jacket fucking BROKE ME! Seeing Ellie have to mourn at Joel’s grave really got to me and her putting Coffee Beans on his grave made me ball! The conversation inside the tent with Ellie and Dina was so funny and sweet in an episode that needed it. The WLF seems so scary at the end of this episode with how many damn people they have!

kaliwali

Let's go! Glad I could get it out in enough time for you to hang out here for it! ✨

It's funny you say this because my opinion about the game vs. show definitely changed a lot after watching Season 1 first and then playing Part I of the game! There were bits and parts that I loved more about the game, and same went for the show. If I had to guess, it may go that way again? Haha So far I'm really loving the show, though. I wasn't too sure after last episode.. But this next episode really brought it back together and even honored Joel in so many beautiful, quiet ways which I appreciated and loved so much.

kaliwali

I feel you on this 100000%. It was honestly really difficult to muster up the desire to sit down and watch this episode after what happened last weekend.. But I did, and wow I'm really glad I did. I think you'll find this episode as a pleasant surprise, or at least I hope so! :)

Kali, Joel may be dead, but Pedro Pascal isn't

JeRon Washington

Kali, whenever you play The Last Of Us 2, your gonna love it, it's very intense and emotional

kaliwali

It's crazy. I think I was so shocked by Joel's death last weekend that I literally COULD NOT cry. And you know me hahaha. I cry when the wind blows the right way 🤣 And I signed off after recording and thought maybe I was broken. Maybe I'd seen too much sad stuff and that was that. But wow- This episode made me realize that I was just feeling that Denial phase of grief. Because when Ellie walked quietly around Joel's house for the first time since he wasn't there, I broke down too. And I felt such a bittersweet release from it, which I didn't even realize I needed until it happened. I loved this episode so much for that. This show is so good and nobody can tell me otherwise hahaha I'm glad you've been loving it, too!

kaliwali

I can't wait to see more with Pedro Pascal in it! He was so good in this show.

JeRon Washington

I know Ellie lost her father figure, I lost my father almost 3 years ago

Robert da Spruce

Just finished watching the episode along with your reaction. I agree with you Kali. Took a little extra effort to muster up the energy to watch. But I’m glad I did Although very sad in some parts, got a little closure with Joel. And the new quest has got me anticipating next weeks’ episode The WLF is much larger than I anticipated. And it’s unknown if they are “good” or not. Also, not sure how the Enigo Montoya/Joker Cult fit into this. If they were just a plot device. Or if they’ll play a role in future episodes. Anyways, I’m intrigued. Excellent reaction Kali!

DirtySteve

I don't know if you noticed but the opening title sequence was slightly different. It usually ends with two figures representing Jole and Elie. This time there was only one. 😭😭

Robin Holmes

I love your stuff Kali but your sync was so far off I just gave up.

KJ

I think it depends on your source. I watch via Sky Atlantic and I think it must be broadcast in a different frame rate to HBO which I assume Kali used. Which means what I'm watching falls out of sync with Kali's episode. So I end up having to pause mine to catch up or her to catch up. But it's not Kali's fault. The only thing thing I suggest Kali does do is maybe record herself at the same frame rate as the HBO broadcast, or produce the reaction at the same frame rate.

KJ

Good episode with some deviations from the game but hopefully nothing major yet. I'll always prefer the game because you get to experience grief as Ellie in your own time, and not the constraints of a TV show. I love that there's some themes and vibes shared with Westerns in this season too.

M1 Maz

This was such a much needed episode that just eased us down gently from the trauma of the previous one. Not just what happened to Joel, but even Jackson, still reeling from the attack. I also LOVE how slowly paced this episode was. I thought we were just gonna get right up and head out for Seattle right away, but we really got so much time to reflect. And see everyone's perspectives, and truly understand the weight of the decisions that were made, and the ones that weren't I absolutely love Dina's character in this! I had never heard of her actress prior to this show, but she's doing amazing. She plays Dina very well, and is so expressive without even having to say much. Also, on just Dina's character in general, she's so perfect for Ellie. She's the type of person who tells you what you *need* to hear, not what you *want* to hear. Even if it's unpleasant at the time. Those types of people, when they support you, you just know it's real ALSO, I missed it the first time, but noticed on this second watch with you, that in the scene in Ellie's room where she's boxing with Jesse, that there's a Matrix poster on her wall! LOL

M1 Maz

No sync issues on my end. If it's the frame rate difference that KJ's talking about, there's unfortunately nothing she can do about it. If you're watching on Max like me, yeah there's about a minute and a half difference with her timer because she skipped the ads. But you honestly don't need the timer. With the sync point at the beginning before the video gets blurred, just line it up there and you're good to go

Giancarlo Gasparin

Could’ve done without the council scene. Whether you played the game or not, you know Ellie’s going after Abby. Would’ve preferred they used that time with a Joel flashback to keep the audience engaged in the backstory of how we got to where we are.

kaliwali

Omg the Matrix poster catch!! This is one of those scenes where if I wasn't recording myself I would pause and just kinda take in the atmosphere haha. On my rewatches of LoTR I paused so many times in Bilbo's house because there's so much to look at! Same with some parts of Firefly lol. Definitely need to go back and do that for Ellie's room because all of the references and posters were so cool to see! I totally agree that we NEEDED this episode. It was like an, "I'm sorry, yeah that sucked" love letter to the viewer. And I was 100000% here for it. We even got to see Joel's grave and mourn for a bit. This entire episode felt like a goodbye, but the best one. One that honored him in the quiet moments. And I appreciate the heck out of it for that! It honestly made me fall even deeper in love with the entire show! I also 100% agree about Dina's character! I love her so much! And she is totally the person to just tell it to you straight, even if it sucks, even if it's harsh. She does it with your best interest in mind, too. Any qualms I had with Ellie's character because of the deviation from the game's Ellie (Game Ellie- Sweet, Show Ellie- A real whipper snapper haha), I completely forgot about because Dina balances her character out SO well.

kaliwali

Yeah, for sure, I knew Ellie wouldn't just sit around the town and wait for that help. But I think the speeches and differing opinions from the people in the town really helped build up the world so much more. We see that even though the world has gone to hell, there are still people that would watch your back and that means A LOT in this messed up place.

Michael Keefer

Facts. Also would have liked if they stuck with the game and had Tommy tell Ellie he was gonna go with her and then sneak off before her. Im not feeling the way theyre rewriting Tommy. I get switching him up for dena because he was needed in the raid storyline. Even tho that wasnt in the game but then they make him curl up and close his eyes with the bloater and now make him out to be a Politician rather than a fighter which hes always been. Whether it was going to war or joining the fireflies hes always been about action. Now hes just writtwn up to be a bit of a chump.

TheGuy

I think it's kind of twisted to think Joel had it coming. He stopped them from murdering a child. No matter the motivation, that is what they were going to do, murder her. If you have to kill someone to stop them from murdering a kid, it's ok for the kid murderers' relatives to come and murder you? The thing that is "just fucking wrong" is the vengeful killing of Joel. Joel wasn't being vengeful; he was protecting a kid from murderers. Her father was a POS and deserved to die.
