I wasn't ready for the mirror this film held up to the world we currently live in. This movie doesn't whisper its message to us either, it absolutely screams it. Through the flames and the masks. Through the silence of a society that forgot its own history and power. It felt like watching a warning that we somehow missed years ago. One that's now circled back to haunt us, tapping us on the shoulder and asking... are you awake yet?V's rebellion wasn't even the most striking part of this movie, even though yes it was briliantly poetic. It was what he was rebelling against that really got me. This film didn't bother to takes sides. It doesn't care about red or blue, left or right... Because that's not the point. It's about what happens when we get so lost in our side of the argument that we stop seeing the real danger lurking from behind it all. The real monster. When power becomes oppressive, when fear becomes the law of the land, when people start mistaking obedience for peace and security. That's when freedom quietly dies. There was something so haunting about watching this given everything going on in 2025. It feels so familiar. The propaganda, the manipulations, the division. It's not fiction any longer. Somehow this movie managed to be so chillingly ahead of its time. And I'm left wondering if it is a coincidence at all. Because here we are, still shouting over each other instead of standing with each other. So where do we go from here?Maybe that's what makes this story timeless, though. It doesn't just condemn, it calls. It asks us to remember that governments are made of people, and people can choose. We can choose to see through the static, to reject fear, to care about one another again. Actually, deeply, truly care. That's what V stood for. Not vengeance. Not chaos, not really. But awakening. A rebirth. V for Vendetta actually unsettled me. But in the best of ways. It reminded me that freedom isn't a guarantee. And right now, it's begging us to start listening again. Remember, remember the fifth of November. The gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿LINK: https://youtu.be/R0QjD9FJu1cI rented this from Amazon Prime

Hellllll yah, cant wait to get into this one again!

Simon

Love this movie and your summary is spot on. Looking forward to watching along in a couple hours when I finish work.

YoureMrLebowski

"I, like God, do not play with dice and do not believe in coincidence." Next week is November 5th. Nice.

Robert da Spruce

I didn’t want to say too much when you announced this film Kali. But yeah, this film feels particularly relevant in 2025 Really looking forward to watching your reaction!

KJ

And we in the UK mark every November 5th with fireworks and large bonfires. Even though the original plot by Guy Fawkes and Co failed. Glad you loved this movie, looking forward to rewatching alongside your reaction ☺️

Chris

Only one quibble with your write up: I don't think the film would shrink from the idea that standing against oppression may amount to choosing a side. In a fight against authoritarianism, standing for freedom is an inherently political act.

Damon Shaw

I was obsessed with this when it first came out. It took me years to realise the voice of V was acted by Hugo Weaven (Agent Smith from The Matrix Trilogy)! The scene where Natalie Portman's jailed/taken hostage, and that act in its entirety always hits me in the feels. I love that she comes out of it stronger after realising what she's fighting for and why.

Scott S

High on my all time favorite list, such a good film and incredible performances. 10/10 do recommand.

So my comment isn't related to V for Vendetta, hope that's okay, but I just learned a new Andor fun fact and I wanted to share it since you just finished it. Remember near the end of Season 2 Episode 2 when the Maya Pei people are having their little showdown, and all of a sudden a wild animal shows up and starts eating them? Well, one of the Andor writers was on a podcast I just listened to, and he told this little story. Apparently he was at home trying to write the end of the episode, and he couldn't figure out how Cassian was going to escape. While he was struggling to figure it out, his 9 year old daughter asked him what he was doing, and he explained it to her. She then pulled up a Star Wars wikipedia page on Yavin 4 and read the whole entry. It turns out, that some 4,000 years before the events of Andor, there were 2 Sith lords fighting on Yavin. One of them conducted genetic experiments on the Yavin wildlife and created fighting animals. The Sith were later forced out by the Jedi, but the genetic experiments they created remained and became part of the moon's wildlife. When his daughter read this, she suggested that one of the wild animals should show up and start eating everybody. The writer liked this idea so much that he pitched it to the other writers, and it actually ended up in the script. So, that whole scene exists because of the suggestion of the writer's 9 year old daughter :)

Ah, a really good point honestly! I do agree that standing for freedom is inherently political. But I think what I meant (and maybe didn't word the best lol) is that this film reminds me how easily politics can become a distraction from the fight for freedom. How politics can be the fear, the distraction, the way to quietly take our freedoms because we are too busy fighting one another's viewpoints instead of standing up against the bigger picture. The message isn't to avoid choosing a side, but to remember why we are choosing it. When it's about humanity instead of party lines and allegiances, THAT is when the fight really means something.

kaliwali

I was soooo surprised to see Hugo Weaving's name pop up for V during the credits! He really does an incredible job with it all! And yesss that entire scene/sequence was so intense. When it clicked I almost couldn't believe it for a second. The range of emotions that the scene made me feel was amazing! Such a powerful movie

Chris

Maybe a way to refine it even further: politics is the mechanism by which a society makes its collective decisions about the rules by which it will govern itself. Thus, it's a means to an end (at best, a positive end; at worst, authoritarianism), not an end in itself.

Jake Steffen

I absolutely love this movie. Very unsettling, but very good

AttractivePigeon

Ah good ole Hugo Weaving AKA Elrond from Lord of the Rings!

pinkdino99

1980s Thatcher's Conservative Britain. 2000AD weekly writer Alan Moore releases this comic book (and Watchmen which is his seminal piece). The graphic novel is even more messed up. For more Nathalie Portman try Luc Besson's Leon: The Professional. Cracking thriller with amazing acting (Gary Oldman). Also Kali have sent you a package for your birthday and to thank you for your OG Star Wars reviews :)

KJ

Leon is great. Think it was Natalie's first movie role? She must have been about 12 years old.

Fred Aczon

This was my favorite Alan Moore comic. He is arguably the best comic writer of all time. Prior to the MCU, his creations were the most adapted by Hollywood (he co-created John Constantine), with varying degrees of quality, usually poor. To the point he denounced any involvement with them. He also worships a snake god.

Onno Smits

The acting from Natalie Portman in this movie, especially during Evey's panic attack after she learns that it was V that kept her prisoner... It is incredible! That scene wrecks me every time. And then immediately afterwards the cross-cutting montage of Evey on the roof in the rain, and V in Larkhill in the fire, and all the events that led up to that moment, and the powerful music. Very well done filmmaking imho. This movie, and the graphic novel it's based on, were already relevant in 2005. And it's scary that since then, we haven't yet heeded the warnings contained within.

Damon Shaw

Same! This film showed how versatile of an actor he is. I just got done watching your reaction, and thank you for the effort you put into your write-ups/conclusions. It's fascinating to me to see what others take away from films such as this one. For me, with regards to this film in particular, it planted the seed that grew into the conclusion and belief I have today. It's a scary one, but it's the only one that makes sense to me now. What we're all seeing, and what has been going on for decades with regards to the left vs right paradigm - it's all theatre. They're two hands that belong to the same body. It's an intentional show that's designed for the purpose of forcing us all to arrive at the same false-conclusion through fear: give up our want to be free in exchange for saftey and future security. The political stage was hi-jacked a long time ago, and those who were involved in that understand that perception becomes reality. They manufacturing the perception/reality they want us to see. I'm sorry to be so bleak, but I believe we all need to stop buying into the false left-right paradigm, otherwise we're going to sleep-walk into the technocratic subjugation that's around the corner if we don't. We don't need masters. We need to become the masters of ourselves.

Steve Mercier

"People should not be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people." Alan Moore, who wrote the comic book this is based on (illustrated by David Lloyd), absolutely crapped on this movie. But then, he craps on most everything, especially if it's adapted from one of his works. He wrote the graphic novel in response to the extreme right-wing politics of Margaret Thatcher-era England; and, the Wachowski's and James McTeigue updated it for the post-9/11 era under the war machine of George W. Bush and company. There are definitely differences, major and subtle; but, this movie captures the essence of the original material, and Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving both are nothing short of phenomenal here--Hugo Weaving manages to capture something both nuanced and primal all behind a mask. The mirrored scene with her being 'baptized' in the rain (with V in the fire) is one of the most important moments in the comic book, and I remember smiling ear to ear when I first saw it in the theater (because I'm fucking old). Also, that end sequence with everyone in and then out of Guy Fawkes garb--which is not in the comic book--is one of my favorites. Clearly, I love this movie, because I'm rambling. I'm done now. Good shit. Going to watch this while I eat.

KJ

Wonderful reaction. Evey reading Valerie's letter originally sent to V gets me everytime. That with the back drop to Evey's transformation - I never have dry eyes. So powerful. “I hope that the worlds turns, and that things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that, even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you, I love you. With all my heart, I love you. Valerie.” - ❤️‍🩹

Now that you’ve had your unofficial start to the DC comics, I’m hoping Nolan’s Batman trilogy will be on the roadmap at some point.

jimmy2k4o .

Its strange say “even though the plot flailed” we celebrate that it failed . We burn effigies of guy fawkes.

M1 Maz

I remember originally watching this movie as a teen and didn't really get anything out of it, naturally lol. I don't think as a teen I could really grasp the weight, and especially the parallels to the world we live in . So I'm really glad your reaction was an opportunity for me to revisit this, because WOW this one really hit. My thoughts on the way this movie portrayed our world is so similar to yours that I won't restate what was already spoken. I just say.... yes It really did work out so well that you watched this now, on the verge of the 5th of November, and just after finishing Andor. Because the parallels were so there. Thinking about what they said here about how you can't kill an idea, and the power that the belief behind it can have just takes me to Luthen, and so many others in that show. And between this and Constantine, it's been a great start into your journey into DC! The DC world definitely have a darker, grittier feel at times, and I can't wait to see you check out more!

Damon Shaw

I was thinking the same thing, but people often wrongly think it's a celebration of Fawkes. It was created by Parliament in 1606 as a way to denounce what he did, and warn others against trying to follow in his footsteps.

Paul Wright

and Agent Smith from The Matrix.

Robert da Spruce

Excellent reaction Kali! I’m glad you didn’t know anything about the movie going in. Not always possible with pop culture and everything It’s interesting you watching this film and Andor in such close succession. They seem scarily relevant to what’s going on in the world today Unfortunately, these shows weren’t prophetic. They are merely reminding us of the tactics that have been used throughout history by people seeking power I don’t know if you noticed, but the screenplay was by the Wachowski sisters (formerly brothers). Who directed the Matrix trilogy. Which starred Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith 😊 That scene with the letter from Valerie still gets me. Even though I’ve seen this movie many times. Lots of great quotes in this film too. Like “People shouldn’t fear their government. Governments should fear their people” and “Artists use lies to tell the truth. While politicians while politicians use them to cover the truth up” I really enjoyed your reaction!

KJ

We burn effigies of more than just Fawkes.

KJ

And yet we set off explosives to mark an event that didn't explode... 😂

Chris Chatham

I appreciate your desire to remain a-political but it's comforting to know I'm supporting someone with morals. Your empathy is what makes watching along with you fulfilling.

Farbod

Same.

Farbod

This was such a phenomenal reaction. I really enjoyed watching it with you. I’m glad it resonated with you. This and Unbreakable are my two favorite comic book films.

kaliwali

Never hesitate to drop random facts all over lol. Especially when they're Andor related 👀 That is wildly cool! Honestly they should give that child a story credit and a tiny director's chair immediately because WOW! I adore that entire scene even more now lol

kaliwali

I was a bit shook when I saw he played V! Never would have thought!

kaliwali

Ahh, apparently I really need to see that one now! But it sounds like I should do a bit of mental preparation beforehand lol. Going into V for Vendetta completely blind like this felt a bit like whiplash honestly 🤣 Brilliant and honest whiplash. And a package for my birthday!? But it's not even for another month hehe! Thank you so much and I'll be on the lookout 👀✨ Thank you for being so thoughtful

kaliwali

I kind of want to read the comics just to see what it's really all about.. But with the intensity of this one and Constantine I'm not sure if I should! 🤣

kaliwali

Oh man.. I 100% agree. Her panic attack almost made me have one, honestly. She was soooo incredible in this role. Every emotion I felt for myself.. And yes the rain scene with the music just added a whole new power to that entire portion of the movie. Pretty wild to think back to 2005 and how it was little glimpses but still relevant. Now today.. The glimpses aren't as hidden. They're more noticeable than ever. And it's definitely eerie to think that we haven't heeded those warnings still.

kaliwali

Oh wow. Your breakdown seriously makes me appreciate the film on an even deeper level. Apparently, I really need to read the comics as well. And never apologize for rambling! I really enjoyed reading your thoughts and take!

kaliwali

I think you may be excited to see the new version of the "Superhero Odyssey" I plan on dropping tomorrow! 👀✨

kaliwali

🩷🩷🩷 Even reading this quote again... my heart

kaliwali

Sometimes I wonder if the world is getting darker or now that I'm in my 30's I finally see things for how they really are.. I feel like it's a bit of a mix of both. Especially with things since 2020 lol. But it's pretty crazy to look back on this movie from 2005 and see it completely new, for what it really is: a warning we never listened to. It's also wiiiiild coincidence (or is it??? lol) that I'm watching this right after wrapping up Andor. Insane timing! And I also can't wait for the DC universe as you know!!

kaliwali

Might need to add Unbreakable to my watchlist 👀

pinkdino99

You are worth it. Watchmen is quite challenging and very dark, so yeah... be prepared !

Kal

I'm so glad you reacted, so beautifully, to this fantastic movie. subbed just in time to rewatch it with your reaction on November the 5th :)

pinkdino99

and Tick from The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert !

There’s a detail I didn’t notice the first time. I watched this film.. in the doctor journal she talks about how not only are his reflexes and strength are enhanced, but that he’s completely lost his memory that he doesn’t remember who he is his name or anything about his life before the experiment. When he’s talking to Evie, he talks about how he was so filled with hate and anger and it’s all that he knew. Getting that letter from Valerie was the first time he’d ever felt love or affection that he knew of that he remembered so in a way Valley was almost a maternal figure to him, someone that gave him something he’d never experienced being unconditionally loved even though it was just through a letter. It actually makes a lot of sense that he would both be changed by that letter, but also be seeking revenge for them. Killing someone that gave him the ability to feel love.. It also makes sense why he puts Evie through that horrible experience and though I have very mixed feelings about that, for him that was the only way he knew to both lose all fear but his gateway to losing his anger and hate. The opposite of what the government wants all of citizens to feel, fear and hate. Although this is obviously supposed to reflect what Germany was going through in the 30s, there’s so many little pieces of it to apply to other parts of government. You can see hints of them talking about things like the patriot act but then also things that hadn’t even happened yet like Covid.. it’s eerie how much this applies to the past 1930’s and 40’s) to the present or at least the time that this was made (2005)and how even today (2026) those pieces of this that still are highly relevant. The struggle between government power and individual people wanting and needing freedom is something that will always be competing against each other
