I was really excited to jump into another Quentin Tarantino film this week after the Pulp Fiction intro I had a few months ago. Especially after hearing that Uma Thurman would be more of a main character here. Once again Quentin Tarantino teleported me into an absolute fever dream. I felt each moment as if I was right there and loved getting lost in the music of it all.The bride will stay with me. Why is her name such a huge secret? 👀 When she woke up from her coma and screamed for the loss of her child, I felt it. And watching her move through this entire story felt like witnessing someone fight their way back to their own soul. It was bloody, wild, outrageous. But also completely devastating.. I found myself rooting for her and feeling the relief of each name she crossed off her list. Now I'm left here, wondering if I should have just hit play on Volume 2 right after this one LOL. I'm loving Quentin Tarantino's vibes. I'll see you all in the next one! Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/b0_CUt4Onw4I watched this on Amazon (Rented)

The Dingo

heheh this will be a fun watch

KJ

Looking for forward to this. And how can you not jump into Volume 2? 😂

Lemurian Jones

There's supposed to be subtitles for the Japanese, but for some reason Amazon Prime has them optional and off by default.

Joe

Oh no. Yeah, there are supposed to be subtitles. That is crazy that they would show a version without. I probably would have thought too that it was Quentin making a choice (like him bleeping out her name) but no. If you get a chance you should go back and watch some of the scenes, especially the ones with Hatori Hanzo and Lucy Liu at the end. Glad you liked it, but seeing those scenes with Quentin’s dialogue will even make you like it more. Hopefully you see Vol 2 next. Then Inglorious Basterds is my absolute favorite Tarantino movie.

Joe

Also, you mentioned the live music played before the big fight at the end. The story with that band (the 5,6,7,8’s) is that Quentin stopped in a clothing store on the way to the Tokyo airport. He heard this on the store speakers and bribed the manger for the CD from their sound system. Then he not only put the song in the movie, but the band itself.

KamikazeCDN

Ah Tarantino, the man with the foot fetish that he loves to display in most of his movies lol. It's kinda funny when you watch his films again after knowing about the fetish...it's just all so obvious all of a sudden. He can also be a bit of an ass on set and in general. I know in this movie Uma Thurman actually got hurt after he pressured her to perform a stunt she didn't want to do. I believe it was a car crash that left her with permanent damage in her knee, neck and a concussion. With that said, he does make some entertaining movies. He has a very particular style that no one else has, you know when you're watching a Tarantino movie. Even when he's not directing and just a writer like with From Dusk till Dawn (1996), his dna is still there. It's not a style for everyone, and some movies are better than others, but I do enjoy the sorta niche film making style he has.

kaliwali

I was seriously contemplating it hahahaha

kaliwali

WHAT!? 🫨😮‍💨😭 Amazon why did you do me like this!? I even turned on Subtitles bc I was suspicious but still nothing

kaliwali

Omg that's WILD amazon did me like that. I even turned subtitles on just to check because I got a little suspicious. A little immersion here and there can be a choice, but it kept going but then even the lack of translation with the subtitles? Amazon whyyyyy lol Definitely need to go back and watch that scene proper

kaliwali

I love that so much!!! (about the band)

The art style your talking about js done by Japanese animation or anime for short. And they are seen as the current best at making animated shows and movies currently. There is a reason I think you'll really enjoy it.

SultanOfSwing

That sucks for Kali that this version didn't have the subtitles.

Fred Aczon

Her putting on Buck's sunglasses after killing him always cracks me up. Having grown up on 70s Hong Kong, Japanese cinema, anime and other grindhouse movies, this movie checks off so many boxes for me. This was such a fun love letter to these genres. Her yellow shoes are Onitsuka Tiger Mexico shoes, a nod to the ones Bruce Lee wore in A Game of Death, complete with the yellow jumpsuit. The soundtrack is the best part, every single choice is iconic and inspired. Who would think to put the disco flamenco cover of "Don't let me be misunderstood" as the final swordfight song, and have it fit so perfectly? So good. Also, don't let the language barrier discourage you from visiting Japan, it's very english accomodating.

Łukasz Jarczewski

You played The Witcher 3, but I don't know if you remember helping an elf in the city of Novigrad reopen his smithy, and then he forges swords for you? CD Projekt Red was inspired by this movie when creating this quest. Even the elf is called Hattori 😉

Chuck Kania

The versions I've watched had subtitles. It is worth reading the Japanese. Need them a little for volume 2

Maerandir Eldar

I just watched it on Amazon Prime with the follow-along, and the Japanese translations were actually integrated into the video, separate from captions or subtitles, and visible without anything turned on. They really are needed to understand what's happening in the story-- much more so for Volume 2. How strange. I'm also watching using Firefox, which can provide a different (and usually better) viewing experience, as the in-browser video handlers aren't as strict when enforcing compliance, but like I said, the captions/subtitles weren't captions/subtitles, they were directly overlays in the video stream, so browser wouldn't have made any difference.

Cindy Clarkson

The Japanese DVD edition was the only one with the battle scene in color. The international version switched to black and white as an homage to old US TV airings of kung fu movies to avoid censorship. In the upcoming cut as a single film titled "Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair", the scene will be in color only...

This movie was such an experience! As I expected going into another Tarantino film, it really was art even more than just a movie. Everything was so deliberate with how it was shot, and with the pacing. Also LOVED the music and how it was integrated into the entire feel of the story. As you know I do, I always love when the music sometimes becomes the main character. Uma Thurman was amazing here too. I really loved her character in Pulp Fiction, so getting to see much more of her in a very intense leading role was really cool! Looking forward to part 2! With the lack of Japanese translation, that's so unfortunate, but what can you do LOL. With any other movie, I feel like it would have been a bigger problem, but honestly the fact that this is a Tarantino film, it kind of worked. 0% understanding, 100% vibes hahaha. I was just taking in the feel and emotions of all those scenes the whole time, despite not being able to tell what was being said

Richard

I always like it when you watch movies with a female protagonist I feel like you can’t help but relate to them a little better than the male protagonists. I liked how in your Q&A you said you’re not worried about running out of popular movies and that was a very smart answer because there are thousands and there are entire genres you haven’t even begun to explore yet. Stuff like westerns, mysteries, classic Hollywood, musicals, tons of rom-cons, anime like you mentioned, etc. You’ve still got a whole world of discovery ahead of you.

Hefty517

One of my favorite movies. Is it the best movie I’ve ever seen? No. But I think it’s the COOLEST movie. And I think you get that, based of your reaction. The whole movie has so much swag. Sorry about the lack of subtitles, hope you were able to find them after the fact.

Scott Lindsey

Very odd you didn't get a version with subtitles as the movie is supposed to have them. I have never heard of a version without them. Amazing movie anyways =)

rubberkidney

if you remember the pilot mia wallace was in it might sound familiar now. no jokes though.

rubberkidney

got me again no blur realized much quicker this time.

Robert da Spruce

Not sure why the Japanese wasn’t automatically translated. Even without the subtitles being turned on, every version I’ve ever seen automatically translates the Japanese I highly recommend going back and watching the whole chapter with Hattori Hanzo with the subtitles turned on. You miss quite a bit if don’t have subtitles Other than that, awesome reaction! Yes, the violence is quite graphic, but it also so over the top it’s almost comical. Making it much more palatable Looking forward to Part 2!

rubberkidney

turn on the subtitles. that easy. this reminds me of the good ol counselor. i can see the subtitles button in the interface you are using. please use for vol 2.

Jonathan D

I have been to Tokyo, Japan, as a member of the military. There is an Army Base called Camp Zama. Beautiful city, and super clean. They are very nice people there. Professional and their decorum is through the roof. Remember, make sure your movie copy is official because some of the versions will not have subtitles. Awesome reaction!!!

Joe Blankenship

Did your version of this not have subtitles? I could've swore there was subtitles for some of the Japanese.

DarthChef

Perfect timing for this. The Whole Bloody Affair is coming out soon in theaters. Both volumes back-to-back. Yes, it's been available on DVD for years, but i need to see it in the theaters again. Also, Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! This watch along format is much better. Also, also, please make sure you have subtitles for the next one.

Dude Longcouch

Watching this movie blind in the theater as a high school kid was wild. It's rare to see a movie with such incredible and gratifying choreography, and such an impeccable OST. I consider every frame from the start of the House of Blue Leaves sequence through the end to be basically perfect. Shame about the subtitle situation. I've seen that happen to other reactors as well. Sorry, I probably should have thought about it and tried to warn you. Ah well, now you'll have something to look forward to on your first rewatch. I would definitely recommend making sure subtitles are on for Volume 2 though.

Armchair Rizzard

This is my favorite Tarantino movie. This one and the second combined. I consider them one piece. As others have said, no doubt.

Steve Mercier

You should very much have subtitles for this film...not sure why you don't (my version on Prime has them automatically).

rSb - Rob Benjamin

I agree with you wholeheartedly. The artistry in this film is impeccable. The Kill Bills are definitely in my Top 20, hands down.

Lastboyscout73

I know plenty of people have commented already, but I honestly have never seen this movie without the subtitled translations. I own the DVD on this one, and they are just .... there. Weird you got a version where they are not. Tarantino is a big fan of old Kung Fu movies and Spaghetti Westerns, so the themes are always over the top plus he likes to make things really graphic. It's so over the top though that I don't cringe, sometimes I almost laugh out the amount of blood. This movie blew me away, I think I rewatched the Crazy 88's fight scene a ton of times.

Mister Lou

The Pussy Wagon made a cameo in Lady Gaga and Beyonce's music video for 'Telephone'

Paul Walker

I know others have said it but I'm pretty sure the subtitles kick in immediately when The Bride gets to Okinawa. If you get the chance you should rewatch the scene where Hattori Hanzō presents her with the Katana he made for her. The dialogue is probably my favorite of the first volume. Also as you noted Uma's acting is not the only thing that's incredible but her stunt work is great too. But she's certainly no Jackie Chan so Zoë Bell her stunt double crushed it to the point QT cast her as the lead in Death Proof a movie in the double feature Grindhouse.

Chris

yaaaaah, a rewatch is probably in order for you at some point with subs. haha the man from okinawa is such an awesome scene.

Paul Walker

She tried it still didn't work.

pinkdino99

This is my #2 QT movie after Pulp Fiction. Quentin Tarantino is an excellent reporter. His knowledge of movies and music is encyclopedic, particular his knowledge of Asian cinema. If you are familiar to a degree of classic cinema, you'll see him echoing shots, moods and styles. Kill Bill is a full on fantasy, the ridiculousness of which is what allows the ultra levels of violence to be accepted, and even laughed at. The introduction in itself is interesting using the cover sheets from 70s Asian cinema releases, and the "Grindhouse" feature presentation from independent cinemas (Grindhouse refers to uber low budget independent cinema in the 80s... think "straight to video" before video existed). Some interesting bits... many have told you about the subs. For next time if in doubt, subs SHOULD always be available for extended monologues. Funnily there is a scene in The Godfather where they switch to Italian for a brief conversation which does not have subs, but that is a misnomer. Nikki's cereal was called "KABOOM !" The cop that investigates the massacre appears as the same character across four movies. Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino are best buds, and make a lot of films together. Rob is even more OTT if you can believe that ! Michael Parks plays the same character in From Dusk Till Dawn, Death Proof and Planet Terror, these two being part of a dual movie presentation from the duo called Grindhouse. The stunt actress for Uma is called Zoe Bell, an Australian actress that is one of QT's close friends and appears in Death Proof and my #3 movie, The Hateful Eight. The actor playing Hatori Hanzo (in my fave scenes of this film) is Sonny Chiba. Sonny is referenced in one of Tarantino's first screenplays called True Romance (RECOMMENDED), an ensemble piece that has the hero Clarence visiting a movie theatre to watch three Sonny Chiba kung-fu movies back to back. Kali, do have Asian ancestry ? It's just your eyes are very almond ! If you are serious about learning Japanese, there is a Steam game called So To Speak which simulates someone with zero knowledge of Japanese being in the country and picking up all of the basics step by step. It's really intuitive !

pinkdino99

Japanese children are given fifteen minutes of every day to clean their classrooms and surroundings. This becomes ingrained behaviour. A Kimono has a pocket specifically to place any of your trash when visiting others so that you can take it home. There is another pocket holding a cloth that you can use to wipe your glass or mug after consuming a beverage in another's home.

Brad

I want you to know that I want you to know that there are subtitles. Amazon just sucks. No idea why such a major streaming service would post this copy of the movie. Weird. Great reaction! Thanks!

KJ

As much as I like the Kill Bills, even I can admit Tarantino is a bit of a creep and a freak for some of the plot points he includes in his movies. Certain things he includes just for shock value and their absence wouldn't hurt the story at all.

Joe Blankenship

This is probably my favorite soundtrack of all of Tarantino's movies. That vibrato effect on the guitar in that "Bang Bang" song is so nice.

PG Modehouse

There are versions of the film that subtitle all the non-English dialogue. I think it may be a streaming platform issue.

PG Modehouse

The Kill Bill films are QT's fanboy letter to Asian cinema. All the sound effects, the stylized action, the blood spurting, are elements found in Asian cinema. The animated Oren origin flashback was done by Production IG, a famous anime studio. Some of the character designs and set pieces and music are from other famous Asian films.

Chris

In your write up you ask "why" on the Bride's name... a general comment on Tarantino, without spoiling if there even IS an answer to that particular question... The best thing and the worst thing about Tarantino is that he's thoroughly postmodern--very conscious of the text as a text. If you read his book, he makes it very clear that his goal as a filmmaker is to provoke a particular experience in the movie theater--a kind of bonkers "wtf this is awesome"/hands on head/cheering/laughing in disbelief feeling. And the choices he makes are all geared toward trying to create that feeling. Which... yeah, it can succeed, and be awesome. At times though, I think it can feel like a prioritization of surface level emotion/reaction over deep emotion or storytelling. Personally, I like Kill Bill (both volumes) best of all his stuff because I think it's the most successful at also having that deeper, more resonant storytelling (Basterds does it pretty well too--Pulp Fiction doesn't really, but it's SO cool it kinda doesn't matter). So... a long answer that's not really an answer--other than to say that, with Tarantino, 9 times out of 10 the answer to a "why" question is "because it's effing cool."

McShades

on my version of kill bill there are subtitles that appear when they speak Japanese, you probably had to turn them on manually. Not a problem though, I just switched to the Sync Along Version...

kaliwali

So sad that it happened that way! But yeah, I guess it's good that I provided the Sync Along even though I'm not really reacting to that dialogue lol

kaliwali

I think he definitely portrays those feelings VERY well in his movies! I knew it had to be intentional, but yeah. I honestly really enjoy his vibe even if some of the scenes are hard to swallow lol

kaliwali

That's really neat!! I had no idea but it makes a lot of sense

kaliwali

Yeah it was a platform issues. I used Amazon but rented it through Moviesphere+ subscription which apparently I need to cancel and ask for a refund 😅

kaliwali

YES! It's very beautiful and lit something in my soul lol

kaliwali

It was so unfortunate! I rented it through Amazon but through their Moviesphere+ subscription so I'm cancelling that and never using that sub again 😭 I'll be re-watching the proper way before I jump into Vol 2 tho

kaliwali

I noticed the KABOOM! cereal but thought it was just so they didn't have product placement. Then the gun happened and yeah. LOL loved it. And no I don't have any Asian ancestry! At least not that I know of. My Mom's side is German mainly and my Dad's parents came to America from Italy before he was born. But awesome suggestions to learn Japanese! I'll look into it, thank you! And as always, thanks for the very cool facts about the behind the scenes on this one. I really loved it and I'll be going back to rewatch with proper subtitles before I jump into Vol 2

kaliwali

Definitely going to rewatch with proper subtitles before I jump into Vol 2! So unfortunate that happened to me on my first watch 😭

kaliwali

Definitely going to rewatch with proper subtitles before I jump into Vol 2! So unfortunate that happened to me on my first watch 😭

kaliwali

LOL I'm going to check that out

kaliwali

Laughing about the amount of blood is how I started to feel during the sprays and spillage began LOL. Interesting to me that they made part of that fight scene black and white to stay in the R rating tho! I asked my editors if they could do the same for YouTube to keep it within ad guidelines and I've never really thought of that before lol

kaliwali

I think after this first watch it definitely shoots up there with a top 20 of mine as well! It was so well done!

kaliwali

I won't be reuploading since I don't really have a reaction to that part LOL and I comment about it being immersive before I try to attempt to turn the subtitles on (which my version apparently they were just broken unfortunately!) But I will be rewatching the proper way before I jump into Vol 2 so I'll let you all know in my intro how that went :) Very unfortunate it happened that way.

kaliwali

I tried to turn them on and still, nothing happened.

kaliwali

Out of the two I watched so far, SAME lol

kaliwali

I'm so sad about the subtitles! But I'll have to rewatch it proper before jumping into Vol 2 which I'm honestly not mad about. This movie was SO beautifully done.

kaliwali

It didn't! I even tried to turn it on.. It was just a messed up version through Amazon unfortunately.

kaliwali

Definitely not going to trust that subscription service through Amazon ever again! I'm asking for a refund as well. Very unfortunate!

kaliwali

I'd love, love loveee to visit Tokyo someday! Glad you enjoyed this one with me! It's definitely my favorite of Tarantino's so far and I can't wait for Vol 2!

kaliwali

It was the Amazon version I used. I attempted to turn them on, but they didn't work. I'm asking for a refund. I'll be using a proper version for Vol 2. Sorry

kaliwali

Very unfortunate but I'll be going back for a proper rewatch before I jump into Vol 2! ✨ I agree about the violence as well. It was so much I couldn't help but just laugh after a certain point lol Which made it much easier to swallow Looking forward to part 2 also!

kaliwali

It was so unfortunate! I've asked Amazon for a refund lol

kaliwali

I remember this now that you're bringing it up! His name WAS Hattori! Very cool

Steve Mercier

I just hope--for you--that you get a chance to watch it again with subtitles (it's sooooooo much better that way). And you'll need them for Vol 2 as well!

McShades

Yeah, i hate it when Studios use soft Subtitles where you have to turn them on yourself instead of hardcoding them right into the movie. I think they do it so they can release one version of the movie and then have people choose which subtitle language they want, but most movies hardcode them into the movie.

rubberkidney

you better or im going to send you to the counselor

Bringo

lots of weirdos in these comments. great content Kali, looking forward to the upcoming stuff

Fettmatic

The outfit that Uma has on is Quentin's Fandom for years for Bruce Lee and Bruce wore the outfit in Game of Death. The fight on the stage with Crazy 88's is homage to Bruce Lee's fight in Japanese dojo in Fist of Fury.

Taithos

That's weird I don't think I have ever seen a version of this movie where it didn't have subtitles for the Japanese parts.

Ian Bailey

The katana the O-Ren is carrying is a different type of mounting than what you are used to seeing, that's why it looks so sleek. It is called a Zatachi mounting. It was developed in the mid-to-late 1800's as a way to carry a sword that didn't look like a sword. They were often used as walking canes in the late 1800's and early 1900's. They are based on an older design for mounting smaller blades.

Schroecat

Not sure why it wasn't giving you subtitles. The movie has always had them.

Jacob

It's very unfortunate the subtitles aren't showing, the interaction in Japan's between father and son is hilarious. If you're in amazon prime video you might have to turn on closed captions to get it to show the subtitles, ive had that problem before.

Jacob

Her yellow outfit is a nod to Bruce Lee, he wore a similar one in one of his movies

rian

i actually never seen this movie, and the only thing i know about it is the “Pussywagon” 😂😂

Ray

I love your empathy, compassion and your solid understanding of the feature you are reacting too.

Ray

Tarintino directs and writes all his movies.

Tommy

I saw this movie when it was first released in theaters and this elderly couple was seated in front of me. when she kills Vernita Green in the kitchen by throwing the knife into her chest the couple got up and left. which I thought ok fair, that was violent but also why would you come to watch this movie if you weren't ready for a bloodbath
