This felt like slipping right back into the familiar magical sky from the first Superman! The tone, the warmth, the epic theme song while recapping all of our favorite moments from the first. It all hit me the same exact way immediately! Bringing back the villains from Krypton was brilliant. It made everything feel heavier, grander, and more terrifying in the best ways. How is one gentle soul supposed to face three beings with his own godlike strength!?But I gotta admit to you all though, I wasn't happy with the romance side of things in this one :( I wanted Clark to hold onto love so badly. I wanted him to be allowed that small, human miracle of a feeling. For a small moment, I thought he could have it all! But when he gave Lois that memory wipe of a kiss, it honestly felt like someone quietly closed a door we had spent two movies walking towards. It felt like Lois' entire journey of curiosity, wonder, bravery, and love swept away in a single moment. Like their love and growth and honesty was written in the sand and then washed away by one sweeping wave. And maybe that's what hurt the most. Superman can save the world over and over again, but he can't save the love he longs for. There's something poetic about that. A feeling I am starting to know all too well with these superhero films, so I should have seen it coming. But for once I just want a superhero to be loved as both the man and the symbol. To break the rules. I still loved this movie for its heart and its soaring spirit. The ending left me floating somewhere between the stars and a broken heart, but maybe the Donner Cut will hurt less? Or more? I guess I'll find out soon enough 👀 Thank you all for joining me in another Superman! Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/K2uQjVdMclkI watched this on HBO Max

So happy you watched this Kali....as far as the last two movies in Christopher Reeve's Superman, #3 is ok..not great but worth watching for Richard Pryor....#4 don't, just don't.. it's awful..... Hope you and your family are all having a wonderous week...xx ♥️

Richard

I was really looking forward to your reaction to this one!! Such a human story at its heart, and a different take on the whole "superhero must give up crimefighting to be with the one they love". He LITERALLY had to give up his powers, and I remember watching this the first time thinking: how is he possibly going to get out of this situation? I loved how you described his struggle in your write-up, regarding that struggle but also how to somehow be with the one he loves. Very well written. But that was a very intriguing take, and typical of how deeply you think, that what happened at the end "invalidated" the whole love story. I had never thought about it that way before, but it makes sense. It's such a compelling deep dive, regarding did Lois love Clark and/or Superman? Clark realized what he concluded the answer was when she was talking about the man she loves and he said "I wish he were here" (you were very tuned in to that moment!) Yes that is sad. It's a fascinating psychological exercise irl, does someone love the "whole person" or just a specific or dominant aspect of their persona? Or the person they're pretending to be? Do they love the best parts, and ignore the rest? Love can very complicated. We went to Niagara Falls for our ?th anniversary, and they made that drop look waaaaay further than it is 😂. They made it look thousands of feet, but it's only about 150. That kid fell a looooong time lol. I'm happy that you didn't put his movie off for too long. A thing that's impressive about you is how patient you are. I'm always getting into trouble for not having enough patience, but you can really enjoy a good movie and be like "I'll watch part 2 next year". That's incredible self control! Since you re-edited your Endgame reaction, I definitely didn't watch that again last night. No I definitely didn't do that . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 🤣

Good Lord, I had forgotten how long that recap/opening credit sequence is! 🤦

It’s been a long time since I’ve sat down and actually watched this one Looking forward to watching your reaction Kali!

Back in the old comic books, Superman would always change in a full size phone booth, they were having a little fun by showing the open area phone booth of the 70's..

You should still watch the Donner cut, and then maybe publish a short video describing your thoughts on both. both have pluses and minuses and are worth watching. A big problem is that Superman and Superman 2 were filmed simultaneously. The Donner cut restores an emotionally powerful scene that must be watched, at least in its YouTube fragment

Awesome reaction Kali!!!

This project was beset with problems, hence the change of direction. But it was still one of my fave movies when I saw this as a kid in the 1980s. One thing I really dislike is Clark returning to the diner to beat up the bully. Revenge should not be a part of his mandate. This leads directly into Superman Returns, the Brian Singer update with Brandon Routh. Superman III is OK, but mainly a Richard Pryor movie. It does have a few interesting moments. Zod was played by legendary British actor Terance Stamp. Stamp goes full on drag with Aussies Hugo Weaving (Smith from The Matrix) and Guy Pearce in the simply fabulous Priscilla Queen of the Desert. He is also in the cult 80s Brat Pack Western Young Guns. Non was played by ex-boxer Jack O'Halloran who's father was a real life gangster and hitman in The Godfather's true life events. He and Reeves famously did not get on. One time he was told that Reeves had been talking about O'Halloran's family in a bar. Jack called Christopher into a quiet corridor and lifted him up with one hand by the scruff of his neck and told him in no uncertain terms not to talk about his family again. As I said the movie hit financial trouble, and word got to O'Halloran that the crew were not being paid on time. He went into the HR dept and demanded the people got paid their fair share. When they refused Jack lifed up a desk and threw it against a wall. The people were paid the next day. It was O'Halloran's idea that Non be mute.

The Donner cut restores what you asked to see

Personally I dont think the next two films are worth watching. I do think Superman Returns is good though its not a fan fav

Whenever you get around to Man of Steel, I think you’ll enjoy the cinematography, music (Hans Zimmer of course) , and action. I think these are better “Super Man movies” because they’re classics, but Man of Steel just makes it all look amazing

I'll try not to repeat what's already been said here, but as Superman 1 and 2 were filmed back-to-back, that was, for example, why you noticed Margot Kidder looking different. Richard Donner completed the first film, and had completed the majority of 2 when he was fired by the studio because, in addition to going over-budget, they wanted the sequel to have a lighter tone with more gags, which Donner didn't want to do. Richard Lester was brought in after the firing to complete shooting, but also lighten the tone. That's why, for example, in the downtown hurricane sequence, it's elongated to include the wig gag, the roller-skater, the ice-cream in the face, the phone booth, etc. It's the only part of this movie I don't care for, because I can't imagine anyone casually continuing to have a jovial conversation while being blown over at a pay-phone in 100+ mph winds. Donner felt moments like this would cheapen the gravity of the drama. Most of the gags were filmed after Donner was fired. But this also explains why Margot Kidder looked different, because some of Kidder's scenes were filmed after Donner was fired, so a fair amount of time had passed, and she was noticeably thinner, because in addition to shooting what still had yet to be shot, Lester reshot some of Donner's scenes, meaning everyone was working non-stop and no one was eating or resting well. It's also pretty remarkable that the studio decided to film two Superman movies at the same time, since this was the first big-budget major studio superhero film. That's why the first one was called Superman: The Movie, because it was such a huge deal that there was an actual movie of Superman (or any superhero) that had a budget and was treated seriously. So for the studio to bankroll and produce not just the first major superhero movie, but a sequel before the first even came out, is even more mind-boggling and impressive. His "laser-beam eyes" (I love that name) are called heat-vision, and they do come from the comics, so he's always had them, he just didn't use it in the first film. This also includes his super-breath, which funnily has the most scientific basis among his powers. There's something called the Joule-Thomson Effect, which states essentially that the temperature of a gas (or liquid) changes depending on its flow restriction: the wider the opening, the warmer it will be, and the smaller, the cooler, and you can test this effect easily by changing the size of your mouth while you blow on your hands - a larger "ahh" shape will make your breath warmer, and a smaller "ooh" shape will make it cooler. Superman's base up north is called the Fortress of Solitude, which is what Jor-el called it in the first film, and also comes from the comics. And Ursa got her first badge from one of the astronauts they ran into on the Moon. Also, before there was a such thing as a home video market, sequels would usually have recaps at the beginning since audiences would've had no way to just watch the previous film anytime they wanted, and Superman II was an example of this, making sure that the audience was caught up. I think they'd still be beneficial, because for some people, a sequel is, for whatever reason, their first one. Some people don't care for how Superman gets back at Rocky, the bully in the diner, but I think it works fine: I think some form of justice and humility was necessary for him, and it showed that, unlike Zod and friends, Superman can use his powers against bullies without going overboard, that he has self-control. Also, it shows that even Superman's not perfect, and has human impulses like everyone else, which in turn shows that his sincerity, hope and kindness are things even he has to work to uphold sometimes, that it's not always easy just because it's his nature. You also saw the actor who played Zod, Terence Stamp (who we lost just last year), as Chancellor Valorum in The Phantom Menace, who Palpatine overthrows to take control of the Senate. I think the amnesia kiss is supposed to be as heartbreaking and upsetting as you took it. We learn that humans are his weakness, meaning they can be exploited to compromise him (because caring for others is obviously not an actual weakness), and Superman realizes as long as she knows that Clark Kent is Superman, she is by far more vulnerable to danger. He does it for her, not for him, because as long as she's ignorant of his identity, she's much safer. And he also knows everyone else is more in danger if he's not Superman, and he can't live with being able to help innocent people and choosing not to. I've always thought that the Christopher Reeve Superman films are the quintessential example of how to do an "OP" superhero with real stakes and tension. He does have a handful of physical vulnerabilities, but more importantly, he's sincere and capable of forming true connections to people that can be used against him, and doesn't believe his physical strength makes him superior or cool. It's not his muscles that make him strong, but his heart. Superman III & IV are at least not as good as I & II, but I think you can go straight on to the DCEU and Henry Cavill, because III and IV both had potential, you can see what they were trying to do: III was taking a risk, and IV had its heart in the right place, but they just don't approach the first two, and Superman Returns tries to continue the Donner story, and I like it better than most, but despite the advent of CGI in the intervening years making his powers look more realistic, all it did was remind me that it wasn't Christopher Reeve. But then, no one is. Although Henry Cavill and David Corenswet (the new Superman) are both terrific! Great reaction, as always, Kali. Cheers!

Kali, if you haven't seen Somewhere In Time, it's worth checking out. Christopher Reeve turning back time for true love. Romance turned up to 11...

Andy Jordan

That's so awesome John Williams inspiring you that way, and I'm so happy for you that you got to become a professional musician. My degree's in Music Education myself, and it's such a joy to be able to give that gift. I wonder if you noticed that both the Indy themes and Superman are in C major. Also, my instrument at university was classical guitar, so I'm a fan of both John Williamses. :-) Thank you for sharing!

Andy Jordan

Did you know that Terence Stamp was able to film all his scenes for Priscilla 2 just before he died, and that Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce are returning, as well? And also, Young Guns 3 is in the works, with Emilio Estevez and Lou Diamond Phillips attached.

Andrew Thompson

All I can say is that getting to see these movies for the first time, in the theatre, surrounded by people was life changing! Kali, I'm so glad you are getting a chance to enjoy them now with all of us! *hugs*

As people have commented already 3 and 4 are not amazing. Superman Returns, is a good film and i loved it (being the first Superman movies i watched in the cinemar), but not loved by many. The story set after Reeves Superman 2. (i think it ignores 3&4). Routh was good as Clark/Superman. But in my opinion, his downfall was that he was literally stepping into Reeves shoes and not making his own origin story. I would recommend watching Returns before moving to Cavill's Superman

James Park

Still get chills from the music

McShades

The Next one you might want to consider to watch is Superman Returns, I wasn't a fan of Superman Returns when it first came out but as time has past it has grown on me.. It does continue the story after Superman 2 by pretending that Superman 3 & 4 doesn't exist lol. Sadly the writing for Superman 3 & 4 was really bad and definitely felt like cash grabs for the Studio.... James Gunn Superman that just came out gives homage to Christopher Reeves Superman movies, Gunn did a great job of keeping it kind of realistic but also giving it a comic book feel to the movie, I have no doubt Kali will like it... Man of Steel movie was initially started by Christopher Nolan who did Batman Begins and the Dark Knight movies which you've already watched, so it has a more serious and darker tone to the Superman story. He handed it off to Zack Snyder to finish because Nolan wanted to start on the Interstellar movie and didn't want to spend the next 10+ years making superhero movies...

pinkdino99

Yes, very sad. he was a lovely cockney gent by all accounts.

I liked the shift in this one from Superman feeling like the 'perfect hero' in the first film, to much more flawed and conflicted in this one. As we've pretty much come to expect in a lot of second films in a superhero franchise after getting that initial origin story (Tobey Spider-Man definitely comes to mind). That not only do they have to fight evil, but those internal struggles at the same time too. But at the same time, it also felt like the film was pulling its punches emotionally. That it could have gone further and hit his deeper, and make things even more meaningful. But left it at all slightly light-hearted and shallower. Made Lois' memory wipe feel a lot more silly and just like an "oh well" and just walked away haha. Maybe something the Donner cut fixes? I've never seen it so will have to check it out sometime! Also, I was trying to figure out all movie why Superman's flying looks so good on screen, but the villains look all wonky... and it finally clicked that it's Superman's cape always blowing! LOL

Liam Harrold

I really liked your reaction to Superman II. What stood out to me is how Lois wasn’t just upset about Clark losing his powers, but completely shocked by his decision to become human. Even if it was a selfish choice, it felt deeply human — Clark just wanted one piece of happiness he’d never truly had, and in the end, he doesn’t even get to keep it. Lois wanting the man she fell in love with makes perfect sense, and I think she was overwhelmed by the weight of his choice. On top of that, Clark knew she was in pain knowing who he really was and realizing she could never fully be with him, which is why he ultimately mind-wiped her — not out of cruelty, but to spare her that constant torment. As for the diner scene, I don’t see it as petty revenge. Rocky is clearly a bully who terrorizes people, and Clark stepping in feels like him righting wrongs before leaving. Some fans also read it as Clark briefly letting his human emotions get the better of him — anger, pride, hurt — but even then he shows restraint. He puts Rocky in his place without killing him, showing that while he may feel human impulses, he still chooses responsibility.

Liam Harrold

i honestly didn't mind superman 3 tbh :)

Liam Harrold

i do also recommend when you decide to finish the christopher reeve side to check out or react to super/man christopher reeve story it's breathtaking and helps you understand his side of the man of steel

Black_TYGR

thanks Kali for the Superman II reaction! you never disappoint. 🤍

SmooothE🚔🚔

Love Ned Beatty and Gene Hackman in their supporting. roles. Terence Stamp also as Zod great villain and comic relief.

SmooothE🚔🚔

agree on most biggest thing I love about Christopher Reeves is his settle things and what he doesn't do as Clark as much as what he does when switching to son of JorEL

James Park

I haven't seen 3 and 4 since I was a kid but I remember liking them, I'd like to see what Kali thinks of them

Bruce Steve

I think the love story you seek is in last years James Gunn’s Superman.

Liam Harrold

Forgot to note it will have superman 3 and 4 spoilers just to prepare you 😅🤭🤭

POTUS: “Oh God…” Zod: “Zod.”

Jose Morales

This movie is probably my favorite of the 4 Christopher Reeve Superman movies. If you do all 4 of the movies, I'd recommend a documentary movie called Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.

Robert da Spruce

Yeah, superheroes have a long tradition of not having relationships ☹️ Usually for one of two reasons. The demands of being a hero leave little, to no time for a relationship. Or, they end the relationship to protect the other person because a villain may try to use them against the hero Either way, the life of a hero can be a lonely one The only exception seems to be when they’re both superheroes

Evert Jethoe

Hi Kali, Going to stream it today to my tv😇👍🏽

Ruben Daniel

On your badge confusion, if you are refering to the red badge, I believe it was the patch Ursa took from the astronaut.

kaliwali

Ooooh maybe! It was the one on her right boob the entire time. I think the space one was down lower lol

kaliwali

Someone else mentioned that documentary and even tho it sounds like it'll break my heart, I really want to see it!

kaliwali

👀 I guess I should have watched that one!

Matt Rowland

I'm a few weeks late to the party, but wanted to ask: Kali, have you watched the Donner cut of the film yet? It IS different, some prefer it outright, the narrative is more tightly focused, but it's biggest issue is that he never got to finish it, so it has holes in it that are filled in with things from 1 (or left undone completely). Superman Returns is technically a sequel to Superman 2, but it doesn't map 100% to either cut. No spoilers so I can't go into detail, but a significant plot point in Returns has logical holes with scenes in Lester's cut as well as Donner's. What i can say is that, had Donner been allowed to finish his movie, how he PLANNED to finish it would have tied into the 2006 Bryan Singer version so much better. But alas, what we have is what we have. FWIW, Superman Returns ignores the events of Superman 3 and 4. I'll never tell you not to watch a movie under any circumstance. Superman 3 and 4 have their own unique charm, but I understand why many reactors skip them.
