Book 2 is already feeling so different!

I don't know if it's because the stakes are getting heavier or because the themes feel more mature, but these first four episodes were AMAZING. This wasn't just about learning earthbending. It's about learning to see the world differently. One of my favorite things so far in this series has been the parallels between Aang and Zuko. They're on completely opposite sides yet they're both carrying impossible expectations. Aang is constantly being told he needs to become the Avatar, while Zuko has lost his one purpose that has driven him his entire life. One is trying to figure out how to live up to destiny, while the other is trying to figure out who he is without the destiny he's been chasing. I LOVE the character writing so much. The Cave of Two Lovers was an interesting surprise lol. It had that silly avatar vibe to it that I loved from Book One but underneath we got some of the deepest lore. The original earthbenders. The badgermoles straight up earthbending. It made the world feel even richer (if that's even possible at this point lol). The story of Omashu was honestly beautiful. And it reminded me that Avatar never really presents love as weakness. And I love that so much. Love is powerful enough to change the course of history. And we got to see King Bumi again already! I don't think I've seen a character make 'doing nothing' sound so wise lol. His lesson about natural jing completely changed the way I look at earthbending. Every element up to this point has felt like a fighting style. But earth... It feels more like a philosophy. Standing your ground. Waiting. Being patient enough to strike at exactly the right moment. It also made me appreciate why Aang is struggling to learn it.Everything about his personality is movement, freedom, escaping.Earth asks him to do the exact opposite. And the swamp episode. I actually LOVED this one.The idea that everything is connected. The Spirit World, nature, people, memories, even people you haven't even met yet. It might be one of my favorite concepts Avatar has introduced so far. The swamp felt like it was showing each person exactly what their heart was holding onto.So now I'm wondering.. Who is Aang's mystery girl??!I'm also officially terrified of Azula LOL.The way she carries herself. Calm, cool, calculating. And bringing Mai and Ty Lee onto her team instantly made me sweat.I have a feeling the three of them are going to be a huge problem going forward.Overall, I'M OBSESSED with Book 2.It feels more philosophical, more character-driven, more spiritually connected.I am so excited to watch more already!Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/4Nbl--wEuK4I watched this on Netflix

Hey Kali have you got a Halloween watch list already or are you doing some polls for it

FrenchTantan

Hi Kali, I dunno if someone told you already, but since you're set to watch four episodes each time (which is amazing), I think you should know that episode 12 and 13 are lumped together on Netflix and labeled as "episode 12". Given that you're going to go 1-4, then 5-8, then 9-12, then 13-16, this means that your current schedule will have you pause in the middle of the "episode" for that part. The title card for episode 13 still shows up, so you'll know when the separation is. It's worth mentioning that it's not necessary to watch 12 and 13 together, it's not a real two-parter. I think Netflix lumping them together is a remnant of how the season was separated in BlueRay format. Regardless, just know that you'll be fine pausing halfway, if you understandably don't want to restructure your watching order. You just won't get the recap at the beginning aha! This also means that what's labeled as episodes 13 through 17 on Netflix are in actuality episodes 14 through 18. The one labeled "episode 18" on Netflix is episodes 19 and 20 combined. I've seen some reactors get confused about the numbering, so hopefully knowing in advance, you'll be fine aha!

Through the mountain!!!

Dude Longcouch

Good info. I really hate the way Netflix did this, makes it so unnecessarily confusing.

rubberkidney

So glad we found the time for four episodes a week. It's absolutely worth it.

Azula commanding the ship in despite the tides being against them really reminds me of Zukos former arrogance at the start of book 1. The difference is that he had Uncle Irohs moderating influence wearing away at him. I think Azula is what he would have become, at least personality wise, if not for Iroh.

About what you said regarding Katara being a bit too push and pull while Sokka supports Aang's decisions, I think you're misremembering. I'm assuming you were referring to the episode when Aang hid a map to Katara and Sokka's father because he thought they'd leave him, and then they did when he confessed. If so, it's worth noting that in that episode, it was Sokka who yelled at Aang saying, and I quote, "You can go to the North Pole on your own. I'm going to find dad". Katara was the one who hesitated, but then followed Sokka out of family loyalty. In the first episode of this batch, when Katara said "I'm not coming tomorrow", she didn't mean she was leaving the group. Case in point, they both said "goodnight" to each other, and not "goodbye". Then, she was shown just chilling in her room the next day. She only meant that if Aang truly wanted to rush things, and force the Avatar state, she wouldn't help him do so. She'd absolutely be there still if it worked. All that to say, I don't think it's fair to make "not always sticking by Aang" a defining trait of Katara's.

Yes animals can earth bend lol that's how Appa flies

S McCarthy

We've already seen some animals bending, namely the big man Appa airbending :)

TChang23

Thanks for the reaction! The write ups are always fun to read, especially when I can’t watch the reaction until a few hours after it’s uploaded. The story really picks up from here now I can’t wait for you to expirience it!

kaliwali

Interesting! I didn't know about this, so thank you for explaining & letting me know!

kaliwali

I feel dumb bc I didn't realize this until book 2 LOL

kaliwali

I'll def be doing some polls again like I did last year! We'll prob start in Septemberish 🎃

Dont be, I got to almost the end of the last chapter of avatar before I realized Appa was using airbending to fly lmao.

I'm glad that you stopped to look up how impactful the scene of zuko and iroh cutting their hair is meant to be. In some of the books (which you should absolutely read or listen to once you've finished the shows) they really go into detail about how important the top knot and hair in general is to fire nation citizens. It makes that scene mean so much more knowing that it's a complete and total severance from their position and life they had in the fire nation.

Ron B

Azula is definitely so twisted and antagonistic for sure but I freaking LOVE that speech she has about the tides. Her whole squad is a lot of fun to watch, I really just love all the characters in here 😅. Oh and as others have said, if you haven't figured it out by now it's a common meme amongst the ATLA community.....SECRET TUNNEL! 🕺🎵

Ben

Book 2 is so fantastic :))

Luii

The Moon, Badger-Moles, and the Bisons were the original benders of their respective element. We learned how to bend the elements thanks to them. Eventually, we also learn who the original Fire Benders are as well.

mitchhamilton64

here we go! book two is amazing. whats interesting with the avatar state is originally aang would intentionally throw himself into danger to go into the avatar state. but the creators felt that the stakes wouldnt be high if he could just switch it on and off. tbf about katara it wasnt easy to go "im not following you". shes seen what aang is like in the avatar state. hes basically shut down and it happens when theres strong emotions involved, its out of aang's control and to see him become someone else with that much power, its scary to watch a love one like that. i always took the cutting of the ponytail as them not rejecting the fire nation because they want to, its to survive, to further hide who they are. theres no doubt zuko hasnt let go of the fire nation ways that easily, even as a fugitive. its just he cant be known as a fire nation citizen while on the run, same with iroh. theres is symbolism as well of course of it, that theyre now fugitives and no longer apart of their own nation and they know that. im surprised you never heard of the secret tunnel song. its funny watching people see the show for the first time and hear the song and go "THATS WHERE ITS FROM!?" performed by the talented dee bradley btw. "the two lovers learned earthbending from the badgermoles" not long after, badgermoles show up. "animals can earthbend!?" 😂 also about jing, jing isnt just for bending. bumi says that when it comes to fighting there is jing. im not sure what jing is tbh, i think its like a state of mind-ish? and i dont think it can be applied to only fighting either. thats why bumi talks about momo mastering some jing, which i think is mostly just to make a joke since he likes momo. NEXT FOUR EPISODES! i think i speak for most watcherss when i say CANT WAIT!

choerrim

honestly I think I could've sat through watching the entirety of book 2 😭

PhoenixVoyager

Kali, you have just been witness to an amazing display of earthbending by Aang... He managed to earthbend himself into a hole so deep while in the caves with Katara 😅😅 Ohhh Aang, you sweet boi...just...nooo 😅

TChang23

Also I don’t know if anyone has mentioned but the lead nomad guy with the guitar is voiced by Dee Bradley baker who voices appa and momo and most other animals in the show!

J M

this is good info and correct ! i think they got bundled together because it originally aired as a 2-part event also worth noting that this is the only episode that's like this. the rest of the multi-part episodes are in book 3 and they're all "proper" multi-parters, just like the season 1 finale. and i think they mostly line up neatly with both 3-episode and 4-episode batches

Kase

They didn’t explicitly show it, but Aang and Katara did indeed kiss in the tunnel. That’s why Aang smiled and Katara blushed at the end.

Josue

Book 1 is mostly just episodic adventures that serve to introduce you to the world and many characters in it. Books 2 and 3 are definitely more focused and story-driven. Nothing but greatness ahead of you.

hinaru

Book 2 starts off strong and it only gets better from here! Ty Lee's ability to suppress someone's bending is pretty OP Next week is gonna be awesome

Justyn

As many times is ive rewatched this show, every episode still makes me teary-eyed This story is so beautiful i cant. SECRET TUNNEL!!!!

SECRET TUNNELLLLL

All 3 volumes of ATLA are amazing. In my opinion volume 2 is SLIGHTLY better than the rest though... but that's tough. Volume 3 is SO good.

Always enjoy your reaction and thoughts-ˋˏ ༻❁𝓚𝓪𝓵𝓲𝔀𝓪𝓵𝓲❀༺ ˎˊ- , you stay fun and upbeat yet understanding the hardships of life. Generally, much like myself, more on that front in a bit. Any great story can do multiple things at once, feeling seamless while maintaining continuity as the story ramps up to it's climax then tying up the story ends nice and concisely as it gently embeds itself into your heart and soul. Specifically, having fleshed out complicated characters each receiving time to bask in the story's sunlight. Though, the story might be centered around a particular "main" character, Aang in this case, a great story blurs this hierarchy giving more credence to the totality of a philosophical outlook that everyone is equally important. Complex themes for the necessary unconditional love for the world's tranquil indivisibility, across the astral spiritual plane unifying not only the nations but the very essence of abundant perpetual sentience! This ultimately transcends mere self importance that breathes life into any fictional story creating a realism that is easily relatable. I know its easy to paint people or characters with a broad stroke. This constant urge we all must diligently focus to eradicate using thoughtful inner self reflection. Knowing we ourselves can choose to learn and grow to understand the human condition from within as well as for those around us. Katara is hopeful and a bit idealistic. It's not that Katara isn't supportative of Aang, -ˋˏ ༻❁𝓚𝓪𝓵𝓲𝔀𝓪𝓵𝓲❀༺ ˎˊ-, its more of the fact she has a strong moral compass holding on to what she believes even in the face of her friends and family scrutiny. Katara only wants the best for them but not going to side with them on goals she feels don't make sense or put her loved ones in danger. Sokka is more cup is half empty than full, not totally pessimistic but leans more of a realistic outlook.. a cautious and evidentiary one. Taking risks only if all else fails or calculated ones. Aang is carefree and happy, wanting to embrace a fun outlook never wanting the responsibility of being the Avatar, yet is dutiful knowing the world is counting on him to bring balance to the world in chaos. Zuko fueled by anger, resentment, bitter from unfair treatment by his Father who see's weakness in him simply for having a heart and not a gifted prodigy. Traumatized causing a lot mental health havoc. Azula, is everything Zuko is not, ruthless, cold, articulate, precise and gifted. Also, traumatized from a spoiled upbringing. I, too, was severely traumatized by my "lovely" life experiences and contending with mental health woes as a child throughout my adult life. I walked through my young life always fearful of going home, growing bitter and spiteful, once I got into my teen years was full of malice for the world, physical pain no longer affected me as it once did. Studied Martial Arts and had a grueling exercise routine lasting hours and hours for many, many years to help give me endorphins to offset my mental struggles that I never received any mental health medicine for most of my life. Constantly had a sempiternal scowl on my face. Walked with a fevered tempo that parted the high school masses, when people saw me coming they moved as if I was in the Matrix and willing it to be so. Unfortunately, this caused me a lot of mental stress and started to gain physical negative affects causing extremely migraines, etc. What we all have in common is the realization our dispositions are simply stages in a constantly evolving life that we can adapt from and surmount them. Allowing us the capabilities to forge ourselves for the better or worse depending on how we decide to evaluate, cope, and proceed with the consequences of our actions. So I made a conscious decision, to let go of the pent up rage, smiled every time looking into the eyes of anyone I passed by, greeting, and acknowledging them by name. Despite how I was treated and the attempted to instill a killer instinct inside me, which it did. I never lost who I was keeping my love for non violence, only using so when absolutely had no choice after saying I had no desire for conflict but would defend myself as if my life depended on it. Habitually,.siding on mercy whenever I took control of the person confronting me. I understand both Katara’s concerns and Sokka’s nonchalance toward the Avatar State situation, but you describing Katara’s behavior as “push and pull” stood out to me immediately. And I can’t help but wonder if that was mere coincidence or subconscious influence from the finale. Cause the whole finale was how waterbending relies on both the Moon and Ocean spirits, Tui and La (literally Push and Pull). As you mentioned in your post, bending is as much of a philosophy as a form of fighting. People tend to be greater benders when their spirits/personalities are aligned with the essence of their bending, which can manifest in their actual behavior. Hence Bumi’s advice to Aang on the behaviors he needs to look for in a proper Earthbending teacher. And also why Aang (an airbender) is a nomad like the people from the second episode who are “Happy to go wherever the wind takes us.” (Side note: also why Appa hates being underground; the air is stifled, limited, and contained. he can’t airbend underground). And that also doesn’t always mean positive personality traits like with the difference between Zhao and Jeong Jeong. So you saying “the push and pull from Katara is a lot…” struck me as lowkey hilarious (and I love it) because of how perfectly on the nose that is as something to complain about from a Waterbender. P.S. cool that you saw the Blue Spirit mask on the cart and noticed the music. Also in the first episode of the season, when Zuko pulls out the knife for him and Iroh to chop off their hair more music from the Blue Spirit episode starts playing. Except it’s the music from the end of the episode, that’s starts when Zuko wakes up after Aang carried him to safety, tells him about his old friend, and continues until the end of the episode when the both go to sleep (and is also revealed to be Iroh playing the instrument I have no idea how to spell [Sugi horn?]). Once they drop their hair in the water it switches back to Fire Nation music tho.

Gated

I'm hyped for next week. Insane stack of episodes incoming!

Yolanda Castillo

Katara just has good boundaries for herself lol

Yolanda Castillo

Fire nation culture is heavily inspired by Japan. Top knots were an important symbol to those of high status in Japan, so Zuko and Iroh cutting off their top knots was both a way to show their loss of status and denouncing their rank in the fire nation.

Yolanda Castillo

Animals can earth bend! Appa (the skybisons) are the original air benders, it's how Appa flys in the first place! The badger moles are the original earth benders and who the lovers learned earth bending from in the story. No animals for water benders tho, the original water benders were literally the moon and the ocean having a gravitational pull on each other lol.

UTU49

You should be able to count on the on-screen labeling at the beginning of each episode. Netflix screwed up a little bit. I believe the episodes are listed sensibly on the DVDs, so you don't have an episode (or pair of episodes) called by a number that is not its actual number. That was hard to say.

Manny

I love you said love isn’t a weakness
