I'm officially in the WHAT IS HAPPENING?? portion of this series lol.

These two episodes pulled me even deeper into this insane mystery. The atmosphere is so dark and haunting, the storytelling is incredible, and the ACTING omg. I don't think I was breathing during that entire undercover sequence in Episode 4 😭I think what fascinates me the most is HOW this mystery is being told. Why is there such a hard focus on the detectives? Rust is becoming one of the most compelling characters I've watched in a long time. He's a man that seems to believe life is meaningless yet he continues to desperately search for answers. His thoughts about monsters and the darkness within humanity was tough to swallow. So is everything he says about religion lol.For someone who claims there's no meaning to existence, he seems dead set determined to give his own life purpose. I wonder if his nihilism is less about what he truly believes and more about protecting himself and his heart from what he's already gone through, you know? Then there's Marty lol. SIR. Constantly judging Rust while his own life is absolutely falling apart. He wants so badly to believe that he's a good husband and father. Yet he's incapable of confronting his own flaws and looking at himself in the mirror. The Locked Room was such a fitting title.. How we can become prisoners of our own minds, our own beliefs, the stories we tell ourselves about who we are.Meanwhile, there's this mystery going on and SO many names and connections. Dora Lange, Marie Fontenot, Rianne Olivier, devil nets, spiral symbols, burned down church, Reverend Tuttle, Reggie Ledoux, the Yellow King, CARCOSA. My head is spinning. And the two timelines makes everything even more interesting because we are seeing some differences in what happened in 1995 and what's being told in 2012. Where is the truth? How much is memory? How much is being deliberately hidden and why?I can't wait to see where the rest of this season goes 👀Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/qS0YdF6MU6gI watched this on HBO Max

So good!!! Your commentary on this series is so fun to watch.

Dude Longcouch

The 6 minute continuous, unbroken shot at the end of episode 4 won the series an Emmy for "Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series." Looking back, it feels like that episode really kicked off the trend of long, unbroken shots that they do in many shows now. Not to say it never existed at all before True Detective (Serenity did it in 2005) but this was the first time I can remember people being really amazed about it, and then you started seeing it everywhere. Haunting of Hill House also has a really good one :D

Pls ignore the guys who think Marty doesn't do anything wrong . If the situation was reversed I promise you they would never give the same understanding to the wife . I can sadly name multiple pupular series, shows and movies where the wife or girlfriend is not given nearly the same consideration.

Why It

I always thought Rust had planned to stay for dinner (maybe) but he knows Marty well enough by now that he could tell he was pissed when he got home so he decided to leave

James Park

Im waiting for more then I'll binge it

Adar Malik

How would you know if that's a lot of coke?

KamikazeCDN

I couldn't stop watching the cat at the start. Watching them go nuts, attacking your hair gave me a good laugh. I don't know what these other guys in comments were saying but as a man that's been cheated on, Marty deserves any shit you give him over that - more so considering he has a dang family. Like sure he's a detective and sees some messed up stuff, no doubt that wears on you but running around on your partner isn't the way you deal with that if you need to. Seeing the biker gang stuff just really made me want you to get into Sons of Anarchy at some point. It's a really great crime, drama, thriller about an outlaw motorcycle club (biker gang).

Naj

No one should be defending past Marty in the comments that's wild: straight to jail.

Michael

I actually was so close to watching it on my own, but I'm glad I waited for your reaction to release!

Robin Holmes

No disrespect meant, but I think you meant to say you watched this on HBO Max.

Nina

'Marty did nothing wrong'. Who said that?

Eric Capretta

1. Your kitty was not taking no for an answer lol 2. You looked confused when the guy at the school said "Andrew blew it out." He was referring to Hurricane Andrew. It was a devastating hurricane. I may have misread your facial expression though so I'm sorry if you already knew that. 3. Holy crap this show makes me want some cajun food. 4. Great Reaction :) I'm really loving this series!

rian

oh my gosh halloween is my favorite holiday, i count all of october as halloween lol, and like pls watch “sinister” this month lmao 🤣 it’s my second favorite behind “the exorcist” :p

Mister Lou

I really enjoy your back and forth thoughts on this story.. and i refuse to project my own thoughts on you, just happy to see where this concludes. Let's go!

Yoav Cohen

That last scene in this episode is one of my favourites when it’s all been filmed in one shot. Absolute cinema.

Kase

It should have won so many more Emmys, but they didn’t submit as a limited series, and unfortunately for True Detective, Breaking Bad’s last season was that year too.

kaliwali

Yep! I just copy/paste that end there and sometimes I forget to change it. My mistake, ty for pointing that out!

kaliwali

someone who gets it! I love all the comments but i'd love it if people who have already watched the show fully could refrain from character development sharing. it's fun to go back/forth with these characters & see how they change over time without opinions from ppl that have already seen the end lol. it's a really subtle way to spoil things honestly

Kavishka Malitha

I watched the first two episodes with you for the first time last week, but I couldn’t wait, so I ended up finishing the rest of the series. Now I can’t wait to watch you unravel this mystery because honestly rewatching it makes it even better. I can’t believe how many little details and bits of foreshadowing I missed, and you seem to be doing a much better job at picking up on them than I did

Soopa

Cohle is right.

kaliwali

oooo that makes me even more excited to see what's to come! 👀 I love shows that have you looking at it completely differently during a rewatch. the best kind of writing imo!

kaliwali

LOL idk just seemed like a whole scoop!

pinkdino99

People are not saying that Marty did "nothing wrong", but there was criticism of Kali being "too hard on him".

Episode 4 is easily a top 5 episode all time. I remember the first time I saw that I though I was on drugs (I wasn't !) I'm sorry, but if you love someone you don't turn up at their place drunk, kick their door down and assault the person that she's with. That TERRIFIED her. You should not terrify someone you love. She summed it up perfectly before... "you want your cake and to eat it." And why did Rust leave the house when Marty came home ? He sensed that Marty thought Rust would make his wife cheat, because he is cheating himself. If he would have shown up, cracked open a beer and started chatting, Rust would have probably stayed, but Marty is incapable of trusting his wife due to his own failures at being faithful. I understand that some people will bend over backwards to make excuses for abusive men. Heck... some people will even elect them.

If the position was reversed no one would care pinkdino99

Ray

Marty doesn't love his wife. It's not what you say but what you do that defines you.

Ray

Rust isn't hurting anybody as he is isolated when not at work. Marty is destroying his little girls and wife. He is his daughter's role model & his actions are only teaching them to marry losers like him. Again, it's not what you say but what you do that defines you.

Whether Rust or Marty, no one is perfect. Agree show is so well written. I think Marty knew all along his affair (and denial/rationalizations) was wrong. He crapped on his marital commitment and jeopardized stability for his kids. Further, while Alexandra Daddario is pretty (and nice body), I would rather have the beauty Michelle Monaghan. People who have an affair (unfaithful to their spouse) can have good in them. Rarely is a person 100% bad or 100% good. I think Marty has some good in him. With that said, Marty had hideous behavior in his betrayal of his wife.

2026-10-18 15:00 Great reaction. I am from Beaumont area. Marty had nothing to do w/the helicopter. Beaumont police (or Louisiana police) had no idea that Marty and Rust were in Beaumont. The helicopter was Beaumont police. Not the greatest area of Beaumont. "No one is going to be splitting the atom here." When I was a kid In SE Texas close to the Louisiana border, I was subjected to that type of fundamentalist religion.

This is my first time watching this and honestly, I think you had the soul read on Marty the first time around. He's a stereotypical cop, sleeping around, abusing his power, lying to get out of trouble. Even Rust fell into that trap, going to see his wife to smooth things over for him, like a good cop buddy. I understand he lost his kid, so he feels like "you still have your children, so put everything else aside for them" but it's funny how he had so much more chat for the mans wife than the man himself. All he did was point out he knew about the affair, there was no grand moral speech about the kids and it ruining their lives then. If *anything* rusts speech to her is even worse because "we're only here to make babies" could be read as "well men have to have sex you know" even though that's not my read on it. Also I feel like anyone who has watched you a while, would know that you "love love" so it obviously stands to reason you're not gonna like a cheating dirtbag. And with kids involved? He stood no chance!

yeah I dont get it sometimes, but people really seem not understand that when they get antsy about a character they either like or changed their mind on as they develop that sharing it leaves an impression on whoever is reacting or watching. It is no different than a spoiler. You see this on any show though. A character in something random like GoT can start off as a very blatant villain, but when a reactor calls it out people lose it since they have the foresight of where that character eventually ends up.

I hadn’t even had *True Detective* on my watchlist until now. I’m giving it a watch for the time being—looks interesting! :D
