Well.. That was deeply unsettling in the most interesting way possible 😭I get why this one is considered such a classic now!

Clarice was such a compelling character to follow. I loved her intelligence, determination, vulnerability.. She navigated a world where she is constantly being watched, scrutinized, underestimated, or made uncomfortable. Yet she absolutely REFUSED to let any of it distract her from what she was trying to accomplish. Her relationship with Hannibal Lecter was so fascinating and deeply unsettling. He's absolutely terrifying. But there's also this strange sense of respect between them. He sees things in Clarice that everyone else overlooks. Their conversations felt kind of like a twisted form of therapy almost? He helps her confront the very things that haunt her while also using those vulnerabilities to get deep inside her head. It was such a disturbing dynamic because you almost forget the monster you're listening to.SUCH incredible acting in this throughout omg.I was absolutely captivated by every single performance the entire time. And that final confrontation? The darkness, the night vision, Clarice being completely unaware of just how close she was to danger... TERRIFYING. But I love that ultimately what saved Clarice was her own instincts and courage. YES GIRL 🔥And then there's Hannibal, still out there, having 'old friends for dinner'...What an ending. What performances. What a film.I'm walking away feeling deeply disturbed but SO impressed and strangely emotional? There was so much more to this than a serial killer thriller. It felt like a story about confronting monsters around us while trying to also navigate our own.Thank you all so much for the recommendations!Next up: The Ring 👀Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/XNV3LjL0lr4I watched this on Amazon Prime

Yes, I have been waiting for this one. Not only a classic, but this is Anthony Hopkins best performance ever, I can see NOBODY else play Hannibal Lecter. This week has been 🔥 Cheers and LETS GET INTO IT!!!🍺

Blackfyre5490

I don't think it will surprise you to know that Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster both won Oscars for their performances. It also won best picture. Absolute classic

Chad Bushue

So excited for this one, Anthony Hopkins role in this terrified me for a long time. First, you’ll know Howard Shore’s previous work from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit 😃 With this you also have to remember that Thomas Harris, the author of the books Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal was an News reporter working covering violent crimes investigated by police and the FBI, using a lot of his expertise and experiences from that to put into those books then ultimately the screen with the movies I highly recommend Red Dragon and Hannibal

William

Oh snap! To be honest, I forgot this was coming. Can’t wait to see THIS reaction. Heh heh. 😈

Howie

Can't wait to watch this as this is one of my favorites! Your write-up is great and completely spot on! In fact, I never thought of Dr. Lecter and Clarice's quid pro quos as a twisted form of therapy; such a great observation! But yes, this was one of the all-time great acting performances by Sir Anthony Hopkins. He was a magnetically charismatic presence, and he steals every scene. So rare when we subconsciously root for the antagonist but that what happens in this movie. Maybe Heath Ledger as Joker comes in as a distant second.

Danny

If the name Scott Glenn (Jack Crawford) sounded familiar, he was in DAREDEVIL as Stick! I don't think it would be all that great for your channel, but one of my favorite shows was HANNIBAL, in which Jack Crawford was played by Laurence Fishburne and Hannibal was played by Mads Mikkelsen. Supremely creepy show. The FBI didn't know who/what Hannibal was so they had him consult on their serial killer cases... and then after they solved a case, Hannibal would have everyone over for dinner!

James Park

Haven't watched this since 1999 I suppose its time for a rewatch, horror isn't my thing but if Kali can do it so can I

Ace Gage

We'll never know what happened to Joe Dirt in that hole.

Chad Bushue

Ohhh and one other thing Kali, if you didn’t catch it Jack Crawford was played by the great Scott Glenn….aka Stick from Daredevil 😃 Great reaction as always

The major theme of metamorphosis--specificially that of the fantasized metamorphosis between male and female, between masculine and feminine--in a horror/thriller where the main character is a woman repeatedly sexualized, gazed upon, and biased against by men might just make this one of the most sophisticated titles ever made. For fuck's sake, the POV shots of males looking directly at Clarice are as contant as they are uncomfortable. And, it's not the very male-centric calm, rational mind (at least according to men) that saves the day here; but, the very female-centric intuitive, empathetic mind (again, according to men) that does. Clarice's ability to understand procedure and psychological method is made all the better by her compassion and empathy--it's kind of her super power, albeit a very real, very human power. That she must battle through the gender politics of her own profession and of society--including from her own mentor, however unintentional--just to be taken seriously, to be seen as an equal, helps to showcase this as not just a her problem, but as an everybody problem. But of course her most important journey is that of her own inner-metamorphosis: from that of a frightened little girl trying to find justice among the lambs to that of a powerful woman able to bring down one of the slaughterers. The fact that Buffalo Bill kills and 'skins' women to make a 'woman-suit', and that Clarice's traumatic memory of childhood involves lambs, regularly sheered for wool and slaughtered for meat, is no accident (the same could be said of Hannibal, who potentially sees everyone as 'meat'). And I'm only brushing the surface here. The layers are deep. Then of course there are the performances: HOLY SHIT. Anthony Hopkins is of course brilliant. But so is Jodie Foster. I think this is where the intense POV shots really pay off, as the two actors emote and hypnotize and command with their eyes. And now...now I'm going to shut the fuck up and watch this with you. Good shit.

Chuckles1004

Such amazing acting. Anthony Hopkins' performance is legendary. Swept the Oscar's. Best Actor, Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Director and Picture. Disturbing, movie in Seven's Genre. Well, have the lambs stopped screaming Kali? HAPPY SPOOKTOBER!! 😀🖤🧡🐈‍⬛

Trevor Go

Hannibal is great. I think it would perform well for the channel; it has a huge fan base, but you don't see it a lot on YouTube since not a lot of reactors watch it.

The ghost of Master Fatman

There's a pretty common misconception that people believe Hopkins doesn't blink at all in that first scene he's in. He does, in fact, when he first looks at Clarice's credentials.

2026-10-18 15:00 It's certainly a product of its time, but "Manhunter" is one of those movies everyone should see at least once. Because "SOTL" is so acclaimed, people either don't know or they forget that another Hannibal Lecter film predates it. Have you watched "Succession"? Brian Cox (who plays Logan Roy) was the original Hannibal.

Though not as widely received as "Silence of the Lambs" I've enjoyed watching "Red Dragon" and "Hannibal" because they still bring something new to the table as well as some very good performances.

Chad Bushue

Hannibal was a bit more hit or miss with me but I love Ridley Scott and Hopkins portrayal as Hannibal Red Dragon on the other hand is a superb cat and mouse thriller in my opinion; Edward Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ralph Fiennes are all great adding to Hopkins.

KamikazeCDN

*during the "Goodbye Horses" scene* Kali "This is disturbing" Me "Just wait..." I feel like you actually had a much more difficult time watching this movie than you did something like The Conjuring. Like yes you were scared during that but I don't know if I've seen you this genuinely uncomfortable. I actually almost feel bad having you watch it...almost (sorry lol, I love this movie). Everyone is brilliant in this movie, they play their roles so well but Anthony Hopkins always shined the brightest for me. Hard to believe that's our MCU Odin honestly. Jodie Foster was actually scared of him on set, she avoided speaking to him between scenes. That hiss/sucking sound he made at her wasn't scripted so her reaction was genuine. Hopkins plays the role two more times in Hannibal (2001) & Red Dragon (2002). There are two more movies based on the books as well, Manhunter (1986) which is based on the same book as the previously mentioned Red Dragon movie and Hannibal Rising (2007) which is like a prequel. There was also two shows as well. I forget who but Hannibal Lecter is inspired by a real person. Buffalo Bill was inspired by Ed Gein (among some others) who also inspired a few other notable characters in other movies you should check out someday (Psycho & The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to list a couple).

mitchhamilton64

over the years i think red dragon is a little overloved. they ruin the dilemma of the main character in that he is so close to being on the edge of going insane, but in red dragon for some reason he has no issues, even puts lector in his place in a battle of wits. just horrible characterization, it would be like if clarice had no flaws or deep personal issues.

mitchhamilton64

really incredible movie and well directed. btw, she didnt know or didnt doubt they had the wrong guy, its just she was furthering along the investigation to help build a case against him when they catch him. she just happened to stumble upon the actual killer, otherwise she wouldve told someone where she was at and what she was doing. i know one fact about this movie and thats that jodie foster suffers from claustrophobia and, idk if its because i know that or she had a hard time hiding it but that early scene where she had to get into the elevator with all those men, she was terrified and you can see her being incredibly tense in that scene because of her phobia.

Bill Bryant

You know, the storyline and production already made this a great movie, but the performances are what made it legendary. It's one of those moves you have to see. It's dark, scary and all too realistic, but it's like a morbid curiosity. And yet I'd still recommend it because of the work Hopkins did.

Richard B

Brooke Smith also played the nurse who greeted Coop and led him to reunite with Murph in Interstellar.

Mister Lou

Another great Anthony Hopkins movie i would highly recommend is called The Edge - 1997. The Night vision scene was my favorite part of this reaction, besides when Hannibal Lecter was on screen. And i think its the voice and cadence of how the "lotion on the skin" line that makes it fun to say..? otherwise I'm just as dumbfounded as you, as to why that line is quoted.

AL b Tross

Red dragon is an excellent watch as well

ITMacPro

Anthony Hopkins won 1992 Best Actor for his role in Silence of the Lambs. Deservedly so.

DarthChef

You mentioned many times during the reaction that the acting, directing and story were good. This is one of three films that won best film, screenplay, director, actor and actress in the same year at the Oscars. The other two "It Happened One Night" 1934, and "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" 1975. Both would be good movies to watch. Once again, great reaction and analysis.

Paul Ark

Another great reaction. Two recommendations based on your viewing of this one: 1) Contact. Another great Jodie Foster film, along with Matthew McConaughey. Sci fi genre, a little bit of an Interstellar feel to it. 2) Copycat. Incredibly underrated serial killer thriller with a little bit of a Silence of the Lambs flavor to it, and incredible performances by Holly Hunter and Sigourney Weaver.

Ron B

I never actually watched Red Dragon, but I did watch Hannibal and left feeling fairly unimpressed...but I also had super high expectations coming from this so maybe I should give Red Dragon a shot some day.

Tony Hofmann

Catherine is gonna take that "fat" dog home, and her cat will never forgive her.

Ron B

This is definitely one of my favorites because Anthony Hopkins is sooo chilling and perfect for the role and is a fantastic actor overall as you have stated throughout the reaction and in your summary Kali! BTW since you didn't spot it but I watched Dumb and Dumber soooo many times as a kid it was a vivid memory for me so when I saw this for the first time as an adult about a decade ago or so..the line of "fava beans and a nice chianti" was a thing Jim Carrey's character said but both him and Jeff Daniels did the slurping sound at the save the Owls event. 🤣🤣

rubberkidney

One of the few movies that I can basically watch anybody react to. Hannibal's got that Tanjiro nose.

Camron

Close to a perfect movie imo.

John Conti

The home used in the film of Buffalo Bill is an air b&b and has props and even a well in the basement made by the same prop person who made the original in the film.

2026-10-19 07:00 The first person I ever saw portray Hannibal Lecter was Brian Cox (much better known for his role in Succession) in the 1986 film Manhunter from Michael Mann. He was a secondary character there, and Cox had a very different take on him. Hopkins takes it, no doubt, but there was something I liked about Cox's more subdued take.

Funs as always .-ˋˏ(•˕ •マ༻❁𝓚𝓪𝓵𝓲𝔀𝓪𝓵𝓲❀༺/ᐠ- ˕ -マˎˊ-! Absolutely, an exceptionally crafted story that they depicted extremely well. Many times in successful visual media the score does some heavy lifting, and this here was no exception. Definitely set the riveting and captivating tone as the eerie mysteries unfold. This is like the second time a creator has mentioned Heavy Rain the game, in the last few reactions I've seen. Doesn't surprise me that you felt some similarities between the two as David Cage seems to tend to do with his games, least the couple I've played, running with inspiration from a successful source. The overwhelming dread any type of media of this ilk is the fact it's based on the true horror that only comes from a real to life possibility. Nothing tends to permeate a sickening feeling through out your soul the closer it is to the dangers of everyday living!

GodlessPrick

It’s so funny that your first association of Hopkins is Odin. So much calmer and less disturbing than this movie. Silence of the Lambs was my first Hopkins movie, when I was a teenager. Hopkins as Hannibal is something you can’t unsee, really. Welcome to the club I guess.

GodlessPrick

I think Mads Mikkelsen made the character justice in the series. But he wasn’t as iconic.

Sonya

Jodie Foster is so talented, and yes also beautiful :) Still beautiful in her 60s. Another movie that's one of my favorites is Contact. Jodie Foster's character is a young scientist on the SETI project. Shares some similarities to Clarice, now that I think about it.

Renato Stojanovic

1:28:28: Many films are shot in Maryland and Ohio bc of the generous tax incentives for film crews offered by these states. Also, Ohio has a lot of old industrial architecture. So, if a film crew wants to replicate new York, they can do it cheaply in places like Ohio or Maryland and not worry about a lot of foot traffic as well.

PaulieXP

I'm going to say something potentially controversial but.. to me, at least, while I adore this movie don't get me wrong, Red Dragon is the better movie. In fact you should do the whole series. Start with Manhunter 1986

James Park

Hey Kali do you have any Halloween costumes for pixel and remmy

PaulieXP

If you want more Ted Levine check out Monk. He's the police captain

pinkdino99

The last movie from Orion. Orion are a fascinating story, their creation from the deaths of the old studios when the marketing companies took over. Orion stepped out of the way of the creative process allowing a near unbelievable string of Oscar nominations and winners culminating in this one. Unfortunately they were not solid enough at accounting and two flops were enough to put them in a debt death spiral which ended the company.

KJ

The more I watch this movie, the more I realise it's about behaviours: how we behave in front of other people and how they perceive our behaviour. We see how the men in this movie behave, but we also see it from the perspective of the women they're interacting with. Especially when we see it from Clarice's perspective, noticing what might otherwise be micro is really heightened to the overt because she's so much smaller than the men she often shares a room with - You really feel their stares and how inappropriate it is, and yet they may not even be aware of what they're doing. And then there's Lecter who, unable to feed on a physical body, he seems to enjoy feeding on the emotional trauma he senses in Clarice. I think that's why this movie is as creepy as it is. We're right there with Clarice and how each situation makes her feel - yet she has the strength to power through and do her job exceptionally well.

pinkdino99

Tastes just like chicken. Apparently... You are watching this at the PERFECT time of year. This is such an October (very grey) movie ! "Three hots and a cot" - three meals and a bed. "That's the Duomo seen from the Belvedere… do you know Florence ?" This is one of the first things Lecter says to Clarice. The final clue she finds to go get Buffalo Bill was the further investigation of his first victim, she that he first "coveted". And where was she ? Right... Belvedere Ohio. There are two versions of the prequel book, Red Dragon which is an Ed Norton more modern version, and a VERY 80s Manhunter which was Michael Mann (Heat) with Brian Cox (Succession) as Hannibal. There is a sequel Hannibal from Ridley Scott with a new Starling. And there is a twisted TV series called Hannibal with Mads Mikelson as Lecter. But best (or worst) of all is a TV show called Mindhunters which is from David Fincher (Se7en), a TV show about the formation of this Behavioural Sciences Division of the FBI, and the first interviews of real world serial killers to build their first profiles. It is BONE CHILLING. Sweet dreams.

Armand Soulliard

Such a good movie. It's a bit of a shame that Buffalo Bill's story is kind of predicated on transphobia (even if they technically say he isn't trans, they kind of try to have their cake and eat it too). The Hannibal TV show is also fantastic, with a different and EXCELLENT portrayal of Hannibal by Mads Mikkelsen. I highly recommend it, but it's a bit gorey and unsettling, so not everyone's cup of tea.

Armand Soulliard

I'd love to see Hannibal here, but it's owned by NBC and I think they're overzealous with copyright claims on YouTube, right? (Or was that Paramount/CBS?)

Christian F

I haven't seen this one since I was a little kid so I forgot most of it. I'm sitting here eating a late breakfast and I come across the scene when she first visits Hannibal and then she goes to leave and that one prisoner flings that in her face lmao. I had to set my plate aside for a while hahaha.

SgtOddity

Brutal! Its been a while since I watched this. I believe theres a sequel?

Glen Roberts

They were giving Lecter the dinners because he was under the Senator's care and they still wanted more information from him. Here's a question for you. Why did the lights turn back on after Clarice shot Bill ? I always found it weird the way they shot the scene where Clarice shook hands with Jack at the grad party. The way they zoomed in on the hands during the handshake and the general awkward feel was quite strange. Not sure but perhaps it had to do with Lecter asking Clarice if Crawford had sexual feelings for her, maybe it was going through her mind at the time.

mitchhamilton64

the lights didnt turn back on, some shots missed and hit a window, making the sun come in.

Glen Roberts

I went back and l looked again and saw the shots knock out some boards/cardboard. Tnx, always wondered about that.

Kirill D.

You need to watch "Contact" (1997), starring Jody Foster and Matthew Mcconaughey, directed by Robert Zemeckis (He also directed Back to the Future trilogy, Cast away, Forrest Gump).

kaliwali

OH I missed that one wow! 🙀 Ty!

kaliwali

OH YEAH! lol I see it now! I think I was so scared and disturbed during this that my mind was in shock 🤣

kaliwali

NBC was horrible with my BSG reactions. The reason why season 4 is still not here :(

kaliwali

LOL nooo! They hate costumes and wearing things 😅 we've tried!

James Park

I saw a cat with a Wednesday wig it didn't look happy

Ari

I recommend reacting to Anthony Hopkins in "The Bounty" (1984) and Jodie Foster in "Contact" (1997).

Chad Bushue

Happy to help! If you’re looking for more of his work I recommend the great 90s firefighter drama Backdraft with Kurt Russell and Robert DeNiro. Courage Under Fire with Denzel Washington, Matt Damon and Meg Ryan(a great Veterans Day watch btw) Vertical Limit(a great winter movie watch) about a failed mountain climbing expedition also starring Bill Paxton and Chris ODonnell.

Liam Harrold

poor precious being fat shamed by kali 🤣🤣🤣

David Trumble

One of my favourite tricks in director Jonathan Demme's film-making style is his unsettling use of point-of-view shots, with characters staring directly into camera during conversations in extreme close up. It's so claustrophobic, trapping the audience in a character's perspective, and I especially love the nuance of when it highlights how Clarice notices the leering attention of all the men around her outside of her dealings with Lecter. Demme uses the same motif in his masterpiece "Philadelphia" but instead to highlight people's bigotry and paranoia during the AIDs crisis, making the audience feel simultaneously prejudicial and prejudiced against. He really is a genius at weaponizing the characters' eyes, and another reason why the film feels so, as you rightly put it, real. Awesome reaction.

Justyn

First time seeing this, and ho-lee-Fuk this film is incredible. The Shining, Jaws, and now this have instantly become some of my favorite movies. What im realizing with these classic horrors is that fear is a remarkably powerful motivation for narrative heroism. We all have our lambs that we hear screaming in our head that keep us up at night. Forcing Clarice to confront her deepest fears and conquer them, while putting the viewer in the drivers seat, allowing us to feel her fear, to feel her motivation to silence the lambs, and to accept that in order to do so, she need to look her fear directly in the face. The scene of her and Dr. Lectors final confrontation, slowly zooming into both of their faces until the cell bars are out of frame. Terrifying, but incredible foreshadowing of how both of them will soon be free of their imprisonments. I am immediately obsessed with this film the character arc for Clarice is absolutely beautiful.

JCR

One of the best films of all time. If you love the Hannibal story, and would like to see more of it... There is a TV show, more modern, called Hannibal. Worth a watch if you have time.

Me

Meet Joe Black is another great Hopkins movie.

Ray

"New fear unlocked"! You keep watching these movies, you are going to have lots of new fears unlocked. LOL! Absolutely do not watch the "Exorcist".

Valerian

if you enjoyed this please give the tv series Hannibal a try

Gustavo Sampaio

This film won 5 Oscars, uncommon for this genre. Although I never liked the flashbacks to her father's memories (too cliche for me), her character was deep and interesting. A strong woman lead portraying a character in a "man's" world (not as common in the early 90s) that launched Jodie Foster into A-list status. Although the performances were stellar, the directing of this film is what really made it shine. The choices of coverage and camera movements, POV shots, and lighting made this truly terrifying. The line about eating liver with fava beans and a nice Chianti has been referenced countless times including in Dumb and Dumber, which I know you watched. Loved watching this reaction!

Ray

kaliwali, I worked 27 years in criminal law and I promise you, you wouldn't want to do 24 hours in jail even if it was a beach day they promised Lecter. Your life is better than somebody who doesn't have freedom.

Ray

3 hots and a cot. 3 hot meals and a bed to sleep in.

Ray

Lecter stole the pen earlier, from Dr. Chilton, during the negotiation scene. The pen on the bed is simply the movie’s way of confirming to the viewer: “Chilton’s pen is missing & Lecter has it.”

Sky Quest Music Official

Brooooo I see what the hype about this movie was all about! This is just on the list of one of those movies that everyone says it's so good but I've never seen, and you watching it gave me the excuse to check it out! It's such a different feeling of uneasy compared to so many other horror films. This one solely relies on the disturbance and the heaviness of what these characters are doing and going through versus relying on jump scares and in your face type of situations. The way that Anthony Hopkins portrays Hannibal Lecter in particular is just incredible. How he talks so precisely, never wasting any words, rather the words he's using he's choosing one by one as he speaks. Freaking Legend dude. Loved this movie! So happy I've seen it now!

Dave M.

"She's really pretty." - John Hinckley, Jr./kaliwali 🤯

Schroecat

This is one of my all time favourite films. Everyone involved took the time to deliver incredible performances, and the terrifying charisma of Anthony Hopkins has (imo) never been rivaled.

M

You should watch the show Westworld.

Dave M.

Can you help me with this furniture, Kali?

vj

Great movie, Amazing reaction! I loved it!
