This was an INSANE ending to such a haunting story 👀

I spent this whole season looking through the darkness alongside Rust and Marty.Trying to make sense of the ugliness people are capable of and trying to still see good after. And even tho we didn't get every answer and they didn't find every monster..I think that's what makes this story even more painfully human. The world isn't fair. The truth isn't always enough. Sometimes doing the right thing doesn't mean everything will turn out right in the end.But we don't need to stop trying either.. And I love that this is what this show left me with.Rust Cohle became one of my favorite characters to unpack, ever. For someone that spent so much time believing human existence was meaningless, he somehow ended up discovering the very things he lost faith in. Humanity. Love. Meaning. That conversation about almost dying, letting go, seeing his daughter & pop again, the light slowly winning against the dark?? Omg. Matthew McConaughey's performance was incredible in every way. And Wood Harrelson was equally amazing. He had me RAGING lol. He brought so much complexity to a man who was so frustrated, deeply flawed, but only human. And their chemistry WAS this story. And that's what I'm taking away from this amazing season of True Detective. That goodness doesn't always have to be perfect to mean something. You just have to choose to keep searching, keep caring, keep fighting for that little bit of light. Even if the world gives us reasons not to. Especially when the world gives us reasons not to.Thank you for being here and for letting me unravel this insane story with you all!I'm tempted to check out Season 2 of this but maybe on my own? Unless you'd all be interested in bringing this back here for another reaction 👀Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/tW9YKWLIbHkI watched this on HBO Max

Last week talking about time is a circle blew my mind because ive been thinking that for years now, I get the most vivid dejavu they're almost like memories as im having them. 20 years ago I went to a psychic and after a few little reads she got right she said she can see me taking off the roof of my house. I thought she was crazy because thats a very ranfom thing to say but 2 years ago I started an extension on my house and took the roof off and put a second story on I've done it all myself, mind blown. Now im thinking can psychics see parts of our life loops, is that what dejavu is remembering past loops am I going to be born exactly the same again. Gotta try and remember to invest in bitcoin

Renato Stojanovic

Finally! Been waiting on this reaction. The rest of your reactions this week have been "meh" for my taste. Back to serious reaction time. 😁

kaliwali

YES! It's so crazy to think about. I used to get pretty intense deja vu. I haven't gotten it in quite awhile now tho so I wonder if I'm in a new circle or something 😅 And that's interesting about psychics! I haven't had a great experience with one in the past so I never tried again. But I read tarot every now and then myself and it's pretty interesting the cards I've pulled and seen mean something a few months later! Also really awesome that you did the upgrades yourself! 😱 That's amazing

ITMacPro

This series is a great alternative to Conjuring 2. LOL. But boy I can't wait until next year. Hahaha.

James Park

Thanks Kali its long and stressful process doubling the size of your house on your own but it was needed with my wife and 3 daughters in the house another 3 years to go fingers crossed. Ive never been back to a psychic since i thought she was nuts clearly not ive never done tarot cards I'll have to look into them. You could be branching off your previous loop keep it up you're doing great

Renato Stojanovic

Yeah. Not really for me. I don't really care for Halloween movies and anime. True Detective and HG Catching Fire and the movie reactions I'm here to see this week.

Trevor Go

I'm going to suggest probably an unpopular opinion. Check out seasons 2 and 3 after you've given this time to breathe. Per IMDb, S1 episode avg rating was 9.2; S2 episode avg rating was 7.8, and S3 episode avg was 8.2. This is quite strong across the board. I was surprised S2 was rated that high; I wasn't a fan at the time of release. It unfortunately followed something incredible and was possibly overly penalized. I'd be down for a reaction rewatch.

Trashboat

It’s funny the police work Marty does in these episodes is the best we him do the whole season. And it’s post retirement of course.

Clay F

I liked S2. Rachel McAdams is raw. When I watched S2 as it aired, that's when I realized that Rachel McAdams is not just a pretty face but a damn good actor.

Naj

The rest of the seasons of True Detective do not give you what you want from them. Season 3 is decent but still doesn't hit the mark. I would say if you haven't checked it out the Fargo anthology series seasons 1 and 2 would be more worth your attention.

Steve Mercier

Might I suggest, if you haven't already, give that closing song ('The Angry River' by The Hat [featuring Father John Misty and S.I. Istwa]) a good listen to--it's a damn good one. As for the season: one of the best ever. Simply put. Really enjoyed watching this again with you.

Kavishka Malitha

Once Marty started paying attention, he turned out to be a pretty good detective after all.

KamikazeCDN

Just a quick note on future seasons of the show, yes they do decline in quality but if you check them out I'd still watch along with you. They're not bad per se, it's just that season 1 is so good. I will say do not save season 2 or 3 for October next year. Season 1 is adjacent enough it sorta works for spooky time, season 2 and 3 are a very different vibe that really aren't horror, more noir and gritty. Season 4 does go back to more horror of a different type compared to season 1 though. Seeing your reaction to these final two episodes (combined with all the movies), I think I regret mentioning shows by Mike Flanagan for a spooky season show. I'm not so sure you'd be able to make it through them. That's not a knock on you either, just genuine concern for you. I'd love to watch them again via your reactions but I now have concerns without maybe more horror tolerance built up...though even then I'm not sure lol. Wood Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are both such great actors, they were perfectly cast for their roles in this show. I don't know if any one else could've done it as well as they did. I do hope you maybe mix in a few more live-action shows. I know you have the comic ones and those are all well and good but I mean stuff away from comics since there are SO many great shows I think you'd enjoy. Some have more seasons and are longer but I'd totally be down to watch them (Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, The Expanse, so on and so on)

Tom

Good god I love this reaction. Lmao that finale was priceless.

Kase

The reason why season 1 was so incredible is because it had only 1 writer and 1 director for all eight episodes. You know what they say about too many cooks in the kitchen …

J Lawrence

40:35 You're 100% right here!

Clay F

+1 for live-action, e.g., Breaking Bad, The Expanse, and shorter stuff like The Queen's Gambit, etc.

Clay F

"If you ask me, the light is winning." Like you, I love that for Rust. And I like it for the show. The show arguably ended with a sense of hope. I’ve been in that hospital (Lafayette General Hospital) a couple of times. Stellar TV. The depiction of the Marty and Rust connection (as friends) at the end was cool. I thought Marty was a good person to ultimately put aside that Rust had sex w/his wife – to work with Rust and b/c Marty cared about Rust.

James Park

I think he means all Kali's reactions are good but if you're not into horror or anime then that limits it, if you're into gaming check out her gaming channel awesome play throughs and reactions over there

Mister Lou

The last line "once there was ONLY dark!.. if you ask me, the Light's winning!" Always sticks with me! Even the stars, most of which are exploding gas giants that leave a lasting finger print that stay longer than their life? OK im not entirely sure about my astronomy knowledge..

Renato Stojanovic

Makes sense. I do enjoy her reactions. I imagine the gaming reactions would be pretty amusing as well. I might check those out. Thx for the suggestion.

Darazanjoll

Loved these reactions. I will not watch the other seasons thou.

Me

Not a popular option but i feel the ending was a let down. The whole conspiracy theme went no where and all we got was, "well, yer' know some times things dont work out the way you want". Well, don't make a frickin' TV show about it, then! Annoyed me, a lot. MM definitely deserved his awards though. Masterful performance.

kaliwali

True! I think that's the main point tho in a way. You can't catch every monster out there. The evil runs deep & there were obviously many people involved with the video tape and all the masked figures and the sweeping of missing persons under the rug through officials... But at least they got THEIR monster & could put their mind at ease with that. It's a pretty dark way to end it, which is also fitting.

Robert da Spruce

Very disturbing subject matter. But also such a great season! I enjoyed watching along with you Kali! I wouldn’t be opposed to you watching season 2. Completely different vibe. But I’d watch your reactions Even though you kinda celebrated Halloween on Thursday, I hope you and the family have a great day! 🎃

iMarks

A fun little easter egg, when the killer first was shown on screen in episode 3, the camera was scrolling in front of the school with its sign "Schools closed until further notice gods working it out". The way it was written on there and the fence poles sometimes blocking some of the letters and if you paused at the right time it would only say "Notice King" as he appears on the screen mowing the lawn.

TheJoeKerr

Loved watching TD S1 again with ya. If you wanted to post the other seasons I would watch. I admit I didn’t like them as much but it takes A LOT to live up to the performances of Matthew and Wood 😜

mads

Hnestly have no words for this show and your reaction itself. Felt it the same way I did when I first saw it. One of the best things to ever appear on TV period. Would love for you to possibly get into Mindhunter. It follows similar themes of understanding a criminal psyche. Thought its more of a study analysis approach vs Detective work/working on like this.

Greg

The expanse would be 🔥

M

The Expanse would be a great show to watch

Geoff Futch

I'm going to disagree partly on the Flanagan stance; I think she's ready for his stuff. Generally speaking, the darker elements of Mike Flanagan's shows aren't as grisly, gruesome, or deeply horrifying (looking at you, CSA crimes) as they are in this season of TD. Stuff can be scary, yes, but the very deep, human elements of the show are SO worth experiencing. I think Kali would be happy to have watched (certainly Hill House, maybe Bly Manor... a couple others are a bit more gruesome, so it's a coin flip in my opinion).

Geoff Futch

It was wild seeing the Lafayette General logo pop up when I first watched this show, as I've been in and out of the real one many times (they used a different hospital for filming, perhaps because the real LG would have been too busy or too expensive for the production).

KamikazeCDN

Kali maybe skip this reply. I'm keeping it spoiler free but still don't want to hurt future reactions with hints or something. While it's hard to speak openly as to not spoil, the reason I question myself bringing up the Flanagan shows is because of how much The Ring got to her and the fact she just couldn't get to The Conjuring 2 this year (no shade towards you Kali). It's not the gruesome nature I am mainly worried about. I can't say more since I don't want to spoil so I'll just have to trust you can see the connection I am making and why I feel like 10 or so episodes of that theme plus other movies may be to much still. Again, unless she builds up a bit of a tolerance to horror stuff over the year.

Ray

Rust is so based. Much respect.

Ray

Marty was a destructive force in his family's life. All the trauma his daughters and ex wife have is all due to him being a complete A-HOLE.

Jamie Mckechnie

Who would've thought that True Detective S1 was kind of a bromance after all. A reminder if you wanted learn more about the mythology and folklore about season one that Novum has a great video on YouTube. For a recommendation I'd through the Fargo TV show out there, season one and two was amazing.

Eric Capretta

Super concerning when you started a story like "It reminds me of Indiana when we would blindfold someone and drive them way out to the middle of nowhere...." Girl what?? lol I'm glad you finished the story hahaha
