She has such a warm positive energy, and her voice follows that perfectly! Beautiful singing here, what song should we check out of hers next? Thanks again Ashley for this one.

Thank you for reacting to IU! She is so big in South Korea. I don't know if it's the best comparison, but I would say she is like the Taylor Swift of South Korea. I really like her Killing Voice because she went through it chronologically. IU debuted in 2008 when she was 15. She became a household name with her very bright, positive image, and as you can see in the killing voice, it starts so cute and colorful. As she moves through her 20s, her lyrics grow up with her, but I would say her singing style will always be unique to her and doesn't change much. I would say, in terms of being "edgy," the song that comes to mind is Coin https://youtu.be/86BST8NIpNM?si=oHzYm92dGKzfiHVj, and another song worth checking out is Love Wins All, which starred V from BTS (didn't sing) in the music video https://youtu.be/JleoAppaxi0?si=-YtS-3mTA1AzHbns . I mention this because you can also see her skills as an actress; she has appeared in many popular Korean dramas. And personally, my favorite song of hers is Palatte, a great song about growing into adulthood https://youtu.be/d9IxdwEFk1c?si=OsiHc6cOATlieLxw and it features G-Dragon who is also a huge name in Kpop

It seems like IU is reverse aging! And let's not forget she is also an acclaimed actress! She won several awards and her dramas are always very successful! And yes, her personality is also just very loveable. She also has a show on her YouTube channel, IU's Palette 🎨, where she invites other groups during their promotions and she is always just the nicest host!

I loved her in Hotel Del Luna. I feel like that whole series was just an excuse to dress her up in cute clothes

One of my favorite IU dramas! I also really liked Mister, which is definitely a bit slower and darker, but I thought her acting was superb.

Love this reaction! Another artist I'm really hearing for the first time here. When you were searching for a word to describe her style "jazzy" came immediately to mind for me and then you said it as well 😂

IU is also like the idol of many kpop idols. A lot of ppl look up to her and there is like a gazillion covers of her song. She is also one of the biggest female solos in SK. She also has her own show, where she invites other artists and she covers a song from the artist and the artist cover her songs or just sing together in general. Regarding skz, they are big and have a lot of fans, so the demand or requests for them will always be high. You will see this in general from the big4 (jyp, sm, yg, hybe). Those are the biggest kpop companies that over time produced the most famous kpop idols and groups. However they also have so many good groups from smaller companies. They just have it harder with promotions and getting bigger and getting more attention. But in my opinion some of those smaller companies and their groups outshine some of those big companies with a lot of money and connections.

Agree! Her show Palette is so chill with great performances, covers, collabs. I could give a zillion recs for that show.

Yes, that is true, she was very cute and sexy.

If you have not yet watched My Mister, then you should urgently do it, it is her drama masterpiece. It is still available in Netflix.

The age thing can be very confusing in Korea because they count it differently than basically any other place in this world. In Korea when you're born, they count it as you're already one year old. So when a Korean says they are 20 for example, most likely they are 19 in international age. They also have this weird thing, where basically everyone turns one year older on New Year's Day no matter when your birthday is. That's why people celebrate adulthood (like turning 18/21 or reaching legal drinking age) on New Year's on not on their actual birthdays.

It's funny you mentioned the little sister vibe that her vocals & energy are giving off, because her nickname in Korea is literally "the nation's little sister".

Love this! I was fortunate to see her live in ATL, and she IS BETTER LIVE. And she’s amazing recorded. She’s also one of the most popular idols that’s popular with the older generations. Hence the nation’s “little sister.” Aside from everything you’ve been told already, she’s also known for being very honest and candid lol. As a vocal coach you’d probably be interested to know she had a cold while filming the killing voice. And she had a bad case of the flu while recording “Love Wins All.” There’s a behind the scenes video on YouTube from her channel if you’re interested. She’s also known to be difficult to cover, due to the ‘edgy’ or distinct cadence with which she pronounces her lyrics
