PEAK CINEMAAA

Noah

There's a saying: "If Batman died, Joker would be the one who would've stayed at his grave the longest". In Batman: The Animated Series, there's an episode where Batman fakes his death and Joker loses his purpose and becomes lost, and in the comic-series "The Dark Knight Returns", Bruce's been retired for like 15 years and when he returns, we see a nonresponsive mental patient staring at the TV with a blank expression, when Batman shows up on the screen, he breaks into a smile. The Dark Knight is the 4th highest rated movie of all time on IMDB with a 9/10, and is in my personal opinion the best movie ever made. The way it handles corruption, how it handles the Joker and it's message about people is second to none. I mean The Joker was proven right throughout the whole movie, except for the ferries. My only issue is the feel. As someone who's into the comics, the Arkham-games and almost all available Batman-content, it's too polished. Gotham has a certain vibe to it and Nolan grounded it and turned it into Chicago. The choreography and the gadgets doesn't give me that feel because everything is grounded in realism. I think Matt Reeves does a much better job at conveying the distinct feeling, while keeping it grounded. The grounded take is, as I commented on Batman Begins, something that kinda ruined the perception of DC and something Snyder heavily incorporated in his two movies, even though it wasn't the only issue with his movies. This movie was actually released a few months after Iron-Man. Robert Downey Jr has said that when Iron-Man released, he was told "this will do, until The Dark Knight releases". It blew Iron-Man to bits at the box-office. 2025 was a big year for us DC-fans since it was the first time since The Dark Knight where DC beat Marvel at the box-office. Superman grossed more than Fantastic 4, Thunderbolts and Captain America 4.

Dark Knight is probably the best movie of the trilogy. This movie was inspired by the Batman: The Long Halloween storyline and the Killing Joke graphic novel. Skyhook ( the code name for the Fulton surface to air recovery system) is a real thing that was used by the U.S. military and intelligence agency to get agents out of hot spots. The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act( RICO) is an extremely important and effective tool that the U.S. used to combat the Mafia. In the comics Jim Gordon’s wife is also named Barbara, which is also the name of his daughter which makes it very confusing. The Major Crimes Unit(MCU)is a squad within the Gotham Police Department that is headed by Gordon. Rachel’s death was extremely unexpected and shockingly tragic because it was a major blow to Bruce. I should tell you that it is similar to the death of the second Robin, Jason Todd. In the infamous “Death in the Family” story, the Joker nearly beats Jason to death with a crowbar. Then DC decided to let the audience vote to decide on if Jason should live or die by calling one of two 900 numbers. The result was 5,343 for death and 5,271 for survival, so he died, however there is more to the story if you are interested. I am mostly going to focus on the new characters. The Joker is one of the most infamous and iconic characters of the Batman franchise. Heath Ledgers performance is amazing because he captures the essence of Joker, he is an agent of chaos and he relishes in it. In most versions, his backstory is left ambiguous, he says it best himself “ If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice”( Killing Joke). In “The Killing Joke” graphic novel we got a backstory that has became standard. He was a failed comedian who turned to a life of crime due to having to support a pregnant wife, who died. During a job in the Ace Chemical Plant, he was force to be the Red Hood( a persona that used to hided the real head of the gang) and he is confronted by Batman which terrified him so much that he fell in a vat of chemicals which caused him to transform into the Joker we know. He contends that all you need is “one bad day” to make you lose all grip on reality. He has caused so much pain for Batman, Gordon and Gotham; He killed Jason Todd, he shot and crippled Barbara Gordon then stripped her naked and took pictures of her, then he psychologically tortured Jim Gordon with pictures of his daughter, he murdered Gordon’s wife ( in Batman: No Man’s Land storyline), and abused Harley Quinn who loved him , among other things. He is always put in Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane, a psychiatric hospital where most of Batman rogue gallery are put after Batman captured them. One thing that is missing from this movie is his trademark Joker Gas, which causes uncontrollable laughter then death with a wide smile on the corpse. Harvey Dent is one of the more tragic characters in the Batman franchise. His transformation is different than what is in the movie. He is always a good man who is trying to make Gotham a better place legally, however he was subject to abuse by his father in his childhood that causing him to develop dissociative identity disorder. During a trial of mobster Carmine Falcone, one of his lieutenants Sal Maroni throws acid on him in open court causing his trademark scars, his second personality to come out and his obsession with duality. He is constantly at war with himself and his MO is that his crimes always center around the number two. He now makes every decision with a coin flip, the coin is a double headed coin: one side is clean( usually a good result), the other side is scarred( usually means death). An interesting portrayal of him in 1989’s “Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth”( which influenced the Batman Arkham Asylum video game), the doctors their decided as a therapy to replace his coin(which has two choices) with a die( which has six) then a tarot card deck( which greatly increased the number of choices), however instead of curing him of his dependence instead leaving him unable to make the simplest decisions like going to the bathroom. In the end of the story, Batman returns the coin and lets him decide if Batman should live or die, he decides to ignore the coin’s outcome. He became a major crime boss in Gotham and is rivals with the Oswald Cobblepot( aka the Penguin). His wife Gilda usually survives and wants him back and hopes that he can be cured and the good man she loved will come back. He often has a friendly relationship with Bruce Wayne. Bruce supports Harvey before his transformation and works to find a cure for his friend. Batman treats Harvey a little differently because he is not a brutal with his takedowns.

Just also one thing. Harvey blames Gordon because throughout the movie, he constantly tells Gordon that his men are corrupt but Gordon just throws away his claims and ignores it. When they discuss that Lau went to Hong Kong, Harvey litterally says: "you're sitting down there scum like Wuertz and Ramirez" who were litteraly the two cops who abducted him and Rachel. When Gordon visits him at the hospital and asks which of his men that are corrupt, Harvey even asks Gordon why he would listen to him now when he didn't do it before. If you had a rommate and a baby brother who was visiting and you constantly told your rommate to close the frontdoor. If she still ignored you and left it open so your baby brother got out and got ran over by a drunk driver. Your rommate wouldn't have been the one who killed him but her ignorance led to his death. That's how Harvey felt. And he blamed Batman for choosing to let Rachel die (he wasn't aware that Joker lied and swapped their adresses). He would've gladly accept death if it meant that Rachel survived. He even tried to encourage her that they were coming for her and said "no not me, you are you coming for me" when Batman saved him.

Anyone else having trouble syncing. It’s like hers is a millisecond or 2 faster. Every time I sync up after about 30 seconds later hers is ahead.

Noah

Seems like HBO is a bit faster. I usually use a VPN and another site to stream but I had the same problem. Switched to HBO and it disappeared

Abby Jane

It seems to be an issue with HBO, it should work if you watch it on there, unfortunately I don’t know what else to suggest :/

Love your look for this review.

Katie Holmes passed on the role as Rachel prior to Dark Knight going into production. It was her choice and they had to recast her with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Harvey blames Gordon because through the movie, he keep telling Gordon his people are corrupt (as does the Joker), but he just ignores it. In the end, it's Gordon's people who are part and responsible of Rachel's death. Harvey blames Batman because he doesn't know the Joker switched the adress, it's more of a "why did you save me, should have saved her"-hate
