ALIEN (1979) - Full Watch Along - THEATRICAL CUT

Alien is a 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O'Bannon, based on a story by O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett. It follows a commercial starship crew who investigate a derelict space vessel and are hunted by a deadly extraterrestrial creature. The film stars Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. It was produced by Gordon Carroll, David Giler, and Walter Hill through their company Brandywine Productions and was distributed by 20th Century-Fox. Giler and Hill revised and made additions to the script; Shusett was the executive producer. The alien creatures and environments were designed by the Swiss artist H. R. Giger, while the concept artists Ron Cobb and Chris Foss designed the other sets.

That’s awesome! Please try the special edition of Aliens. Ever since I first saw that version 25 years ago, I haven’t gone back to the theatrical version since then. It has sooo many important details.

Hey, that the same outfit you were wearing in your live steam! (LOL! you told us to watch for it!) The guy you couldn't place is Ian Holm. He plays Bilbo in the Lord of the Rings movies (which you haven't seen yet) but you may also have recognized him from The Fifth Element, Chariots of Fire, the Day after Tomorrow, or a slew of other things.

Coby! When I get home from my shift, I’m showering, settling, and starting my version of Alien along side this, and it’s gonna be a virtual movie night! Thank you for doing one of my favourite movies ever!!

Dave Beth

Coby: Maybe I'll make this my new sleep movie! Coby 10 minutes later: This is so gross and terrifying!!!

Terry In the UK

This might sound a little heartless, but I was always more concerned that Jonesy the cat survived more than I was the humans.

Mark Knight

Hope you’re doing well Coby. Looking forward to seeing this tonight.

Havent watched yet, but I assume its going to be great and I hope you liked how they made it in 1970s. Hope you dont get jump scared to much.

The more distinguished, silver-haired version of Tom Skerritt you were thinking of is mostly like as David Drumlin from your Contact reaction. Loved your reaction to Alien. I can't wait for Aliens. They are very different in tone but equally brilliant.

That was a great reaction Coby! One of the best sci fi thriller films to have been made thus far, in my opinion. I would definitely recommend watching Aliens, the sequel, ad THEN just stop. All the alien films that come after 2 are CRAP and not worth your time. One of the things you see in the directors cut is that the xenomorph had cocooned 3 of the crew members in preparation to impregnate them. Basically the xenomorph takes a human and using some biomechanical voodoo, it morphs them INTO an egg/facehugger. I know you watched the first predator for criminal content. Any chance predator 2 might be on the menu (so to speak) for this channel?

Copy, yes, I can never unsee it once I noticed it. The Alien does indeed give Dalllas the jazz hands when it runs into him.

I love coming home after a long day and finding a great movie reaction waiting for me. I would have bet anything that you had already seen this. Next, you'll be saying you've never seen The Exorcist. This was great! Thanks, Coby. I'm looking forward to Aliens.

Good job picking out the fact that the alien ship looks very much like ribs, and you are absolutely right it is supposed to. I think the lack of lighting in the rest of ship is because the ship is old and the company is cheap, and only the lights that are absolutely necessary to work are working. Ripley sings “You Are My Lucky Star” which is from the 1952 classic “Singin’ in the Rain” and it cost the company a lot of money to license it and they were not happy about it but Scott refused to change it. You definitely need to watch the sequel Aliens by James Frickin Cameron. This movie was greenlit because of the extremely unimportant movie Star Wars, but was written before it. Ridley Scott has come out to say that he prefers the theatrical version of this movie. However, you need to watch the Special Edition of Aliens, it has additional scenes that clarify some plot points. Bill Paxton isn’t in this movie, he is in the sequel. In Aliens, it is mentioned on a screen during Ripley’s hearing that Lambert is a trans woman, born male but has changed to female. I saw in an interview that the crew believed that gender and sexuality will be more fluid in the future. In an early draft of the script had Captain Dallas and Ripley hooking up, but this idea was dropped. The very obvious sexual overtones to the design of the Alien plays to the theme of rape that plays an important part of the franchise. They have greatly expanded the lore of the Alien franchise with books and comic.

This may just be an urban legend, but supposedly this was the pitch meeting for the sequel: 1) James Cameron walks into the board room and writes "ALIEN" on a white board, then looks back at the executives for a long, dramatic pause. 2) He then adds an "S" to the end of the word, and again a pregnant pause. 3) Then he draws a vertical line, drops the marker and walks out of the room without saying a word, leaving only the word "ALIEN$" on the board.

Still one of the greatest Sci-fi horror movies of all time. Along with The Thing (1982). Regarding the end where the Alien did not attach Ripley, not sure if it is true, but heard that Ridley Scott said it was looking for a place to die since he originally wanted them to have a short lifespan

Nick Christensen

That was fun! And im glad you stopped before the end credit scene where Jonesy scratches her so she chucks him out the air lock. I thought it was in poor taste and unnecessary.

Chicks make me laugh... innocent men and women killed no issues, but heaven forbid your hurt an animal. 🙄🤣 Much like there are only 2 Terminator movies, there are only 2 Alien movies. Interestingly, there are a lot more similarities between the two IPs than that but I will leave it there. You probably recognize Ian Holm from "Lord of the Rings" and/or "The Fifth Element". My favorite roll for Harry has always been Howard from "Down Periscope".

Good reaction!
