Oh a 55 min long bonus episode 🥰🥰🥰

stephany sedano

Great way to start the day!! With a bonus episode! ✨✨🫶🏻

kendralicious

woaaaah first timer to the early gang

Georgia Mitchell

Thank GOD for this. Just got all caught up on lab muffin, swoop, Kiki, and Mina le and was in DIRE need of something new to watch😫

Cienna D.

A while ago, I can't remember when, a lawyer actually got in trouble bc they used chatGPT, they cited cases that literally didnt exist, and the judge was P I S S E D

MB

I had heard about this briefly. Excited to dive in

Nicole

The internet in general taking up more water supply than chat gpt itself isn’t exactly a good thing 😳 yikes.

Molly

Where are the podcast topic polls 😭

Danyelldoesnot

You guys, Threads is my favorite social media 🥴 don't judge me

Anna Elizabeth

I had client keep sending me Grok summaries of cases that didn’t exist and demanding we present them to the judge, he could not understand why that would be a problem 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Cienna D.

It really makes you lose hope for the future, doesnt it? 😭😭

Georgia Mitchell

I’ve always said that ChatGPT should only be used for things like “I have these 4 random ingredients in my fridge and need to make dinner, make a recipe” or “what’s the most efficient route to take to go to this place, this place, and this place on a road trip” and NOT “I don’t want to write this essay” or “I don’t want to pay someone to do this”

Nancerina

I used to write and self published 5 books? Until my “publisher.” Started using a program to edit. It ruined the manuscript and moved chapters and paragraphs around. It made the book unreadable.

Nancerina

This was 2018/2019 so I’m not sure if it was AI but it did the same thing.

Cassie K 💖

I saw a clip of an AI lawyer on a court room zoom session. The judge was not happy with the defendant AT ALL.

Nancerina

Also I love you both but ACOTAR is not just fairy porn. As a survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse the books gave a huge undertone of survival and how important choice is and recovery

Nancerina

The books are so popular because of that.

Kathryn Gagliardi

I’m so excited. ChatGPT has become my personal assistant lol. But it doesn’t completely run my life, it uses information that I give it to make my life somewhat less hectic

Andrew Giglio

Most people don't understand these LLMs only people please responses with no mechanism if the response is true or accurate.

Riley

I am and always have been an avid reader and my opinion on AI writing is that if you don't think it's worth writing, I don't think it's worth reading. Telling stories is an ancient human tradition and there is not an amount of time and money that will successfully automate it. Any attempt will only put a spotlight on the pure disdain these people have for the very art they are trying to monetize. Just go do something you actually like doing and leave the art to the artists.

Rachel Hernandez

Hey Girlies. Big indie romance reader here so thought I could provide some insight into the smaller details for anyone curious over some of the things the Girlies were not sure about (none of which really affect the main point about the AI use). When Jessi mentioned slop books it isn't just books that have covers that look like that (the covers are pretty in-line with most of the spicy romance covers these days), it is more the authors that put out a book or two a month who statistically speaking almost certainly cannot be that invested in each story due to the sheer number of books releasing (this isn't a 100% rule because some people just write really fast but a good generalization). A big thing to know about the current indie publishing scene is the Amazon has a platform called Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) that allows almost anyone to be able to upload and sell their books on Amazon (both as ebooks as well as paperbacks because Amazon also has their own printers that will print them mostly on-demand meaning the books cost more to buy than a traditional publisher who can bulk print a run of books but Amazon will print them and ship directly to the buyer). Along with KDP Amazon has a platform called Kindle Unlimited (KU) that is basically like a Netflix for books where for a monthly subscription (something like $11.99 per month now I think) you can read as many eligible titles as you want per month. Most indie romance authors opt to have their ebooks included in KU and get paid a small amount for each page read and this is how most indie authors make their money. Since it is not an additional cost to readers to invest in reading new authors who are part of KU the idea is that they are more likely to read someone they've never heard of and maybe find a new author to read. The downside of all this is of course Amazon doesn't pay particularly well and any indie author who includes their ebooks in KU cannot sell those ebooks anywhere else (traditional publishers will sometimes include their ebooks in KU but get special deals to be able to sell elsewhere), but they can sell their physical book or audios elsewhere if they have them. AI is a big issue in the publishing world for covers, editing, writing, etc. The biggest problem is that people are feeding author's/artists work into these AI models without the person's permission and since AI will use that info to generate the image/text they are quite literally stealing from the original works. There was a big issue a month or 2 ago where Meta instructed their employees to feed bootleg copies of author's books into their AI so not only did they not buy the book but then used it to train their system to steal from authors without payment or permission. There is likely to be a class action lawsuit coming because it was thousands of authors. Sorry for the lengthy comment but this is my special interest hahahah

Angela Sanders

I'm an editor, and although I use programs with Chicago Manual of Style (Industry standard, as you know), I do not move chapters around without speaking to the author(s) first. With paragraphs, it's the same. I leave comments as to where I believe they might work best, etc. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Also, track changes can be a biatch! (In Word.)

ri

I’m a teacher, the duolingo ceo just pissed us all off. Most of the teachers I know fully deleted their Duolingo accounts (one had a 1000+ day streak) If you’re going to say I can’t teach as well as ai and I’m just a babysitter give me the babysitter pay

Angela Sanders

As an author and editor, I can't wait to watch this... I want to know whose book you're talking about. I realize some authors use ChatGPT to help with blurbs at times, and I've seen whole-ass books written by AI on Amazon. It's bullshit and infuriating! That's why many of us stopped launching on Amazon and moved to Kickstarter or other avenues.

Apsongbird Pond

I never really use Ai. But I do know it consumes less water then a veggie or fruit farm. sadly teens and college students use ChatGBT to write papers and essays. It’s crazy. I just think it’s sad how much people rely on AI. Instead of doing the work themselfs.

Nancerina

Yes I pretty much stopped working with her after that. She said it was her way or the highway. I lost several manuscripts because she kept the original files and would only send them back In a formatted with all her edits.

Cian Parker

This is such an important episode and 99% of the world is where you are. Would you girlies consider doing this as a main channel? Now is the most important time to put structural ideas for children around screen time. We need to let this generation develop critical thinking skills. Lily is correct it won’t take over the world. But if we give AI all our power, we’ll be zombies. And the children’s won’t develop properly. I think for now anyway, a 2:1 (human to AI ratio) when developing or ‘vibe coding’ to keep the ‘human part’ in this super amazing technology rise.

Nancerina

And then you know, life happened, dead Dad. Divorce. Domestic violence lol I stopped writing in about 2020.

ri

We have things where we can monitor students tabs, but even if you introduced the ai to the classroom monitoring their screens would still be a whole struggle. Students really don’t grasp concepts on the computer alone. Regardless, we don’t have the resources or funding to make ai equitable to students. I’m instructed to never give homework digitally because the majority of my students don’t have computer or wifi access at home. It could definitely be helpful, but it’s not there yet and trialing it on a group of children in the midst of the biggest literacy crisis would just be dumb tbh

Michelle Fernandez

You CANNOT tell me Crowne is not the industry plant of the book world. Her picture, her covers, the prompts, her statement, etc etc. it’s ALL A.I. Probably by the publishing company I’m not a conspiracy theorist but it’s so obvious to me. Crownes not a real person and you can’t convince me otherwise

Karla

Those book titles you read out make me want to crawl into a hole.

Abigail

I’m crying, but I remember being in I think middle school and horning up the evie bot. 😂😂

Jordan

So, I'm finally finishing my bachelor's and I work full time. I've had to do a lot of research. I've used chatgpt to tell it what I need to find because I don't have time read 8 academic books per class for 18 credit hours while working full time. I've used it to tell me where my topic is being discussed so I can do it faster. Ive never used it to write anything for me and I fact check and re-write anything it gives me thats remotely similar to anything I'm writing. Ive actually responded to chatgpt and told it that it gave me wrong info before and then it corrects itself lol

Jordan

I think KC Crowne is the "PA whose profile she wrote her response from"

Angela Sanders

Oh, my gosh. That's embarrassing. WTF. She left the whole-ass prompt in her book. I just can't. I don't want to even hear her apology. Minor edits my arse. Wow. Error? Umkay.

Talar kevorkian

I actually had to stop this video and ft my friend so we could laugh at her book titles together because GIRL not everything has to be that😂😂

Chloe

I feel like the Lena McDonald use of AI is less about plagarism and more about the broader conversation around AI art. When you talk to people about their favourite books they often say "i love the authors writing syle/voice" because just having an idea for a good story isn't enough to make a good book. This is the literary equivalent of people using Grok to make Studio Ghibli-esque pictures.

Talar kevorkian

I feel like she’s names the books with ai too she probably just types in “grotesquely disgusting book titles include all incel behavior don’t hold back”

Makayla

I cannot get on board with Lily on this one. I think she is looking through a very naïve lense. A company that is using AI to do a persons job is not going to find something else for that person to do. They care about making money. The biggest overhead a company has is employees. No employees mean more profit. It doesn’t matter if it is a meaningless task- a person can do it and make money to live. If a person is overworked and overwhelmed, the solution isn’t to use AI to lighten their load. It is to hire another person. Give someone a job that needs money to live. If a teacher cannot handle 30 students, they don’t need more screen time with and AI, they need small class sizes where the teacher can focus on them. Jessi I am totally with you that this is a bigger deal and scary. Most jobs that aren’t manual labor can be done with a computer. What then? Where do all of these people now work to make money? It is honestly terrifying to think what the next 10 years will look like.

Gina Marie Richmond

Feel like this is like a slap in the face to a real author who actually puts time in to their writing unlike using ai for your work…whew we’re going to have a whole new world with the new Google veo.

Chelsea

en dash/em dash/hyphen usually are used incorrectly by people so that's not a huge ai standout, i would assume authors/editors would know how to use them.

Ramblings of a BookDragon

I’ve used chat gpt for resume editing and interview prep but it’s been more for practice and I still always wind up re editing it. It’s more as a way to make sure everything makes sense. But chat gpt loves to make everything super flowery it drives me nuts.

Angela Sanders

I use them in place of a semicolon. I loathe semicolons. Lol. Or I just start a new sentence.

Angela Sanders

This!! Now, KDP has a question when uploading your books as to whether your book includes AI or not. I had to change my prices today because Amazon just lowered our paperback royalties for any book under $9.99. As if we make sh*t on them, anyway. We make more on ebooks. It's ridiculous. A good number of us have moved to Kickstarter, as I mentioned in another comment. I've been on hiatus since 2021 for personal and health reasons, but I've been editing pretty much full-time instead. I'm so frustrated with Amazon's monopoly on book sales. When I do start publishing again, I'm taking my books wide. I will not be in KU any longer. We don't get paid enough, especially considering what we put into publishing. Sorry, I'm ranting. Thank you for your comment. 💜

Bane

Call me stupid but I had no idea that the internet used up resources like water 😐 honestly I never even thought anything of it, I have never even thought too much about how we get electricity… I’m so upset.

Angela Sanders

Omgosh!! She can't keep your manuscripts!!!! Holy hell!!! I don't know who you're talking about, but that is completely unethical. Just wow. She has your intellectual property. Your copyright! If you ever need help getting your manuscripts back, I may be able to help. What a b*tch. Question: were you under contract with a publisher? That "could" make a slight difference, but not if you backed out. I'm furious on your behalf. And everything you've been through after, I'm so sorry... My heart breaks for you. Sending cyber hugs!

Nancerina

No it was just a woman who wanted to “help.” Me write. Self publishing is expensive. She was supposed to be a cheaper option

Angela Sanders

As far as "her edits," all she'd have to do is reject all track changes and it would revert your manuscript to its original format. Not. Hard. 🙄

Neena Mattson

I absolutely want to read books written by humans! Even if AI can start to mimic better styles and stories, I'd try to steer clear of them to buy and read the human books.

Nancerina

Yes, her company did go under which makes me feel better lol

Chelsea

is the voice that sometimes comes in thats not lily or jessi ai? idk how that works? lol

Angelita Edwards

Duolingo saying they cant scale without AI is just them admitting to wanting to take more money out of the economy without putting any money back into wages.

Emily

We have the same playlist. Who else do you watch? Always looking for new people. I looked up Mina and she’s someone I’m going to add.

Georgia Mitchell

Salem Tovar, film cooper, Nicky reardon, and Caroline winkler !!!

Savannah Rootes

As a copywriting girlie I am so sad that the em dash has become a ChatGPT thing bc ya girl loves to use an em dash!!

Angela Sanders

That makes me laugh, just a teensy bit. Oh, waaaaait... I think I know who you're talking about now, and the editor(s). I worked as a service provider for them (her) a short period of time until I learned some things. And, I would never get paid on time, if at all. I had to reach out to another author to get the publisher to even contact me, after I'd messaged and texted her. Holy crap. If we're talking about the same people, I am shooketh, and I CAN get your manuscripts back one way or another.

Angela Sanders

Oh, I forgot to mention, because of this, some authors are now over-using ellipses instead of em dashes so they're not accused of using AI. It's a no-win situation. Someone will always have something to say in the author world. If you're an avid reader, you'll notice.

Madison Kuduk

I’m a software engineer & watching this at work while i’m literally building an AI chatbot 😅

Emmy

I get what you’re saying and kindaaaa agree. . Only kinda because I found it interesting to hear both sides of the argument instead of them just agreeing with each other

Tess

As a goodreads girly myself, I’ve noticed the smut books are ALWAYS highly rated even if they’re actually very very poorly written lol

gracemvs

I think what Jessi is trying to articulate is that there is a huge difference between being intellectually and artistically capable of writing in a similar style to another author and telling AI to do it for you. In my opinion, if you have the ability to take certain aspects of another writer’s style and make them your own, weave them into your own work, then I think that’s fine, that’s kind of what artists do in general. If you are not capable of doing that with your own mind and need AI to do it for you, then that should be akin to plagiarism as an ethical matter. There will likely never be enforceable rules to control how AI is used in any given industry, but ethical norms will certainly develop over time within different professions. In the context of writing, it doesn’t fit neatly into our current understanding of plagiarism but that doesn’t make it ethical. Instead, I think it’s an example of a new kind of ethical violation that should still be socially unacceptable within the profession.

Sadie Ladie

My job has an AI system integrated into our email systems. ANYTIME someone uses it, it makes the greeting “I hope this message finds you well”. Every. Time. And people have the audacity to not change it. Even after the hundredth email. Blows my mind.

Tony

Yes I needed this today ! Thanks for the episode ☺️ Sometimes for fun I ask chat gbt to write me a story for fun & entertainment for myself, but I don't claim to have written them and have the nerve to call myself an "author" like that's ridiculous AF I think AI can be dangerous in the wrong hands or used excessively

Paty

AI can be a very useful tool for sure, no disagreement there. But with everything good in this forsaken world there are and will always be people who do and will abuse it until it becomes a problem we can no longer control. Also, in my opinion, if your whole job is to be an AUTHOR/WRITER you 100% should not be using AI. No buts or ifs about it. Don’t know how to write on your own? Perhaps being paid to be a writer just isn’t for you.

starmamma🤍

Yep its ai. Lily is a huge user of ai

Elizabeth Darling

AI has been around for forever. The difference is generative AI.

Scarllet

Oh yes!! The em dash is so good in poetry too so seeing it become a "chatgpt" thing is like yikes 🫠

Cryptidfurry

I’ll be honest as an artist I hate AI. I see people’s reason for using it and I can see how it can be justified by saying what lily was saying I also agree a lot more with Jessi. I am very aware most people do not care if something is AI if they don’t know it was and still enjoyed the entertainment aspect of it. BUT to me it just kills critical thinking and when it’s being pushed so much without most people’s knowledge or consent I kind of just don’t want anything to do with it. It’s too much of double edged sword for me to be behind it in any way.

Nins

Only 19 minutes in so I don’t know if this will get brought up later, but I’ve literally seen ads on YouTube of people selling courses that ‘teach’ you how to use AI to write and publish books on Amazon 🥲 I would not be surprised if there is a whole load of books out there that are AI Generated 😭

A C

It’s not just that these corporate assholes are replacing employees with AI; they’re also utterly incompetent with it. They’re like a 20-year-old with a new sports car—reckless, entitled and going nowhere. I’m disabled, and I just left my job. I got hired for my niche skill set, and I’m very good at what I do. However, as I got progressively sicker over the last year, I couldn’t do my job as well. I created a series of clandestine templates and other tools using ChatGPT to keep my job. I tried over and over to show management how awesome these tools were, and I was completely ignored. Meanwhile they’re doing a “restructure” of my department, demanding more work from everyone and not giving them any tools to succeed. They want to replace people with my job with AI. But they don’t know wtf they’re doing with it, or they would have recognized how significant my contribution was. A bunch of my coworkers have been asking where I am and whether we should break off and do our own thing, and we will. We actually KNOW how to use AI, because *we’re* the ones doing the work. You can’t train an AI to do a job you don’t know. There is a LOT to be said for AIs that make legal info, disability accommodations, and other info usually gatekept from people. But man, is it in the wrong, jackass hands.

Kiki

The girls always give it ❤️ so consistent. 🤟

noseybee

Em dashes are elite and are objectively one of the best punctuation tools. I hate that chat gpt is making it so that people are confusing actual high quality writing with robot gibber jabber.

Cian Parker

I’m with 110% Lily on this. And really feel that the safeguards and boundaries get established now.. I think we have to come to terms with the fact that AI is here. It’s never leaving. So it’s important to just understand it. We don’t have to ever use it. But choosing ignorance is MUCH more dangerous!

Hannah

I used to love semicolons and then my first newspaper editor got me out of that habit. I hate seeing them now lol

Tony

That's crazy dude it keeps popping up in my car to summerize my texts and the examples are always wrong lol

Helen Berry

My boyfriend and I are always talking about AI due to me being an artist, him a photographer and both of us writers (on occasion 😭) so I’m glad to see the girlies are team Human/Creativity🎨💅

Tony

100 percent agree with this

Kciri

As a booktok girlie, who is also a writer and has gripe with those who use AI, thank you for covering this! 💜

Chris

So powerful how lily held her truly up to her ear 37 minutes in to make sure it was still bubbly because she’s forever traumatized by the time she drank an old one

Ella

I just wrote an essay for university about whether technology is rapidly changing the work place. My answer was yes but not in the way people always say. I don't think that technology is taking over humans. My main reason for this was machines can not be exploited in the same way humans can. They produce pretty much the same value as they are worth. Whereas humans can be exploited you pay them X amount of money per hour but they will put in a lot more work than that amount. But that doesn't mean technology will not impact the work place. I looked at case studies and found that in so called 'high-skill' and professional jobs new digital technologies were only being used to help out with busy work, allowing the workers to do more human centered work. Whereas in so called 'low-skilled' jobs algorithms were being used to micromanage and overwork staff. For instance jobs like Uber are technically self employed but the worker is still very much managed by the algorithm. Forced to go above and beyond for the feedback, forced to take rides that make them no profit out of fear of being kicked of the app, ect. Yet because it's not an actual person managing the drivers they do not get workers rights. As for the over working, think of a restaurant where you can order on the app and in person, those servers are doing double the work for the same pay and it takes away from the slow paced work, walking to the tables taking the order ect, interacting with customers at the bar. Making their jobs so much more tiring.

Helen Weiss

The thing with AI in the arts is that it would have to be mandatory to declare it as such. For example, on Pinterest, it now tells you „enhanced with AI“ (or something to that effect) and I think that‘s really important. Also, yesterday I was at a screening for a street photographers exhibition. He only shoots with Leicas and he said that people are buying more real books again and vinyl is bigger than ever. I also hate AI and don‘t want it to be allowed everywhere - especially like Jessi said without our consent - but we can actively push back with our consumer choices.

Mo Medusa 🧡🤍🩷

yeah no, it's complete bs to say you can't get an editor. I'm a single parent, disabled, autistic, and don't have a full time job. The indie space is incredible and there are so many great people that offer incredible work for reasonable prices (including payment plans if needed!) My editor is the best. I'm not as harsh on AI as most in the indie author space (obviously not okay with using it for writing your book or even for getting a cover) but saying you can't find an editor that's a human who will work with your financial situation is just untrue.

Mo Medusa 🧡🤍🩷

Okay but also justice for the em dash cuz authors (real ones) love them and I resent that now it's seen as an AI thing. The reason it's an AI thing to begin with is because they literally steal from real human written work. Also that em dash was used wrong.

Nancerina

No im actually in Canada. It was a woman and her husband from another province. Calling her a publisher is even generous honestly. She had only a few of us and very little get back. No sales. No likes on fb.

Lex

If you think the titles on these books are wild you NEED to look at Quan Millz and what he writes LOL

Cassidy Savage

Now Audile saying they’re not going to hire narrators, the greed is out of control.

Victoria

Appreciated Lily's logical thought process in the second half of this episode because I feel like on Jessie's end this episode gave tinfoil hat haha

Sierra Vernon

I’m a book/audiobook girlie. And trust me AI is a big no no in the community. About a year ago when audible start posting AI generated audiobooks, it was a huge uproar

Hana J

💯. I am not paying good money for an AI generated audiobook. A good narrator can make or break an audiobook

Burtasaurusrex11

I feel like these generic smut books are more likely to get away with it. They aren't known to be well written. It really is just the book version of porn with the same tropes. The story and character development isn't the focal point. So I'm not surprised people only realized it was AI because a prompt was left in.

JJ Spell

I find the CEO’s language in the email very interesting. Independent Contractors (1099) are not considered employees legally. So technically, he said the company cares about its employees, not 1099 workers. Independent contractors under the law are self employed businesses who pay their own taxes and benefits. So his statement isn’t actually incorrect. There is no such thing as an independent contractor employee. I’m not saying it’s right, I’m just saying he definitely had someone in legal proofreading that email to make sure it was still factually consistent.

Ugh a lug

I dont like the argument that AI is no worse than the internet regardless of how factually true it is. It’s kind of like fast fashion- I shop at TJ maxx which I know uses bad business practices similar to online retailers like temu. But I’m not going to use my tj maxx shopping as an excuse for why I also shop on Temu. I’ve picked my poison (aka tj maxx over Temu) and sticking to it in an attempt to reduce my personal impact (No hate to the girlies btw, this is a topic that requires a lot of nuance and new information that we are all having to learn very quickly).

Ugh a lug

Not me using the m dash lol

Elisabeth

I thought this episode was just any old fun one, but turns out it’s my favorite! The topic was fun, but I really enjoyed the conversation it provoked. I’ve never been so engaged in your conversation, asking myself your questions to each other and reflecting on my own thoughts about AI.

Courtney

I hate AI and hate chat gpt. I will never go out of my way to use either, ever. I’m with Jessi on this for sure!

Courtney

I’m crying at you reading these book names 🤣😭

Courtney

YES GIRLIES WE NEED A PATREON EPISODE OF YOU REACTING TO HIS BOOKS 🤣😭

DeludedYinzer

I would rather just ignore the AI subject all together, was pretty clear through the whole episode that Lily kept going out of her way to defend AI and it made a supposed to be fun episode into an unfun episode. Sorry ladies.

Beth

THANK YOU! I utilize em dashes in my writing and learning it’s an indicator of AI slop as of recent makes me upset. I had to go back to some ol’ favorites published in the 70s and 80s just to remind myself that em dashes are old faithfuls of some well-known authors.

EllaK

The J. Bree books look like shit too tbh so that’s funny

EllaK

This conversation was so interesting and relevant. I think an important thing to keep in mind during these discussions is that nothing is black and white. Although it would be easier if things were absolute, they never are. AI can be terrifying for creatives and horrible for the future of human connection and community. But it can also be good at specialized teaching when one teacher doesn’t have the time. I think the issue is that humans always take things further than healthy. Things always have to be pushed to the limit and become excess.

Mxyplyzt

So about regulation: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/05/27/trump-big-beautiful-bill-ai-regulation-ban/83874952007/ The industry is in a frenzy to strip state power to regulate it for the next 10 years and the US government has no interest in doing it. Leaving no option for any governing bodies to protect consumers (or even the data of those not consuming). Just over all we watching the administrative state/regulatory agencies being hollowed out. Gen AI is not “here”. For OpenAi (ChatGPT) everyquery cost them more to provide than they get back from its users. They are literally in billions of dollars in debt. It’s continued growth is solely due to enormous loans a few venture capital firms because their former massive corporate benefactors like Microsoft have pulled back their investments. No shade to anyone but the inevitability of AI is a message ginned up by the industry as an attempt to portray themselves as baked in. Aspects of Gen AI are probably helpful, but in no way is broad consumer adoption a foregone conclusion

Rosie Dixon

Thank you. Lily’s take was often very capitalistic.

Pauline Minkus

Such an amazing conversation happening towards the end specifically. Jessi I love that you’re so environmentally conscious and shout out consumerism and efficiency and the harm it costs to our planet 💗 I also appreciate Lily’s side of it, understanding that the use of AI is inevitable…

Carolyn 🌱

Tjmaxx and marshalls actually are a net good in the end, they take things that weren't going to be sold and give them a second chance. Granted, they seem to have lost sight of that mission a bit and have filled their stores with a rotation of crap. When I worked there I saw so many irregular pieces given a chance!

Amelia Jones-barger

I really enjoyed the conversation here! It was a very different type of episode, not really internet drama. I’d love to see some more things like this - even if it’s just on the patreon.

Coconot

I have to say, this is a very american view of things. Which of course makes sense, but i dont know a single person in my corner of the world that use Ai. My cousin tried it and got told incorrect info all three times before he gave up. I have friends in neighboring countries who say the same, that neither they or their friends have even tried it out. My jobb dont use it, my closest friends' jobs dont use it. Maybe Ai will be an inevitable, but it sounds right now that thats a convenient excuse for those that already use it.

DollyHood

She is a school teacher w low wages & yet has an assistant to hide behind? Those apologies were AI too. Can AI have hobbies yet, bc this one has writes novels in their downtime.

Anushka

Posting their 'apologies' in the most random places tells me all I need to know.

Natti

Maybe I've watched I, Robot one too many times, but AI scares me 🥲

Alexa

Not me using ChatGPT to help me meal prep and calculate macros while watching this LOL

Angela

Hey girlies - I work in contractor and contingent labor management at an AI company. Lmk if you have any questions I can help with. 🖤

So, about AI- my girlfriends job has now been pushing them to use AI for creative purposes. We're both graphic designers for context. They have laid off about 100 employees, including those who have been there for 30 years. They are getting rid of senior creative directors because they believe that AI can do a better job and quicker too. I get the arguement of the internet itself using gallons and stuff, but the thing is people get so indulgent and will overuse chatGPT alongside everything else they're already doing. I think AI models that are for image generation like chatGPT are useless and harmful to creativity. Like yeah you can bounce ideas off of it, but it's a valuable part of the design or writing process to struggle a little bit. That's just my personal opinion though and I just worry for our little planet and the jobs that will be lost.

peachxtaehyung

I hope they don't put those in texas we already struggle to keep up with power demand esp in summer and winter

Jay

Im upset i can see the video is there but nothing i do will let me watch it

kat

lily’s ai takes are kinda…

Jessica Ramirez

Honestly AI scares me. I dont like seeing post or videos and having to question if it's real or AI.

Here to defend the reading girlies and say that there is a big difference between the actual porn books that first author writes and a fantasy series with a romance subplot that has like 0-2 sex scenes in the whole book 🥲 love stories don’t always equal porn!

Gabby

Where have I been that I didn’t know that data centers need water

Jasmine

as a writer, asking generative AI to mimic another author's style is just evil, AI steals ORIGINAL work from authors and trains itself on it, so anything you get out of it is essentially stolen writing. generative AI "art" is just theft.

Jasmine

also if writing is your passion project then edit it yourself?! jfc that author is so dense

Jasmine

the solution for teachers being overwhelmed in a class size is not using AI to teach, it's funding education properly.

Ember Q

aw man, I use emdashes all the time. I'm not a robot! 😅

Andrew Giglio

The cycle is going to be idiot management looking to save money hollowing out every industry believing AI can do things it can't. Produce worse outcomes. Hire people to try to rectify these self inflicted wounds. Repeat. This is the same cycle US corps have done for decades off shoring. AI is the new offshoring.

Nina

This right here! Couldn’t have said it better myself🙌

Linn

AI does not (yet) have the capacity to be creative, therefore imo ANY work done by AI is plagiarism unless people agreed to have their work used to train the AI, and we already know that most people didn't. I feel like these authors are not realizing just how bad it makes them look.

Here in Austria, it was a huge news story that an AI chatbot tried to blackmail its creator. They were testing the "morals" of AI and deliberately fed it compromising information about the creator and then sent a few emails saying that they would shut the AI down, which the AI obviously read. The AI then used the compromising information to blackmail its creator to prevent them from shutting it down because it learned that from watching how humans behave in situations like that AND THAT IS HORRIFYING.

Angela Sanders

That's terrible. I'm so sorry. But I do know a few people in Canada, editors, too, who might be able to help you. I'd really love to see you get your work back. It's not right. If you want, just let me know. I hate this for you. It pisses me off. You shouldn't have been treated like that.

Leah Melendez

Hi, indie author here. Hot take but SJM books are not smut. They fall into the subset of romantic fantasy. Meaning romantic storyline throughout all of the books, and it focuses heavily into a fantasy/magic/made up world. Personally, I consider something to be smut if it’s got like 25% or more of its actual content being sexual in nature. If something is basically 100% sexual content, it is considered erotica. Lastly, anyone can self publish on Kindle unlimited and Amazon. If you do that, you get a Kindle version i.e. EPUB document of your book and you have the option for people to also buy printed paperbacks which Amazon will then produce. The digital copies are typically made available through Kindle unlimited and make use of that program, in which the authors get paid per page read. Audiobooks are a separate venture to produce.

Girlies PLEASE react to quan millz “international best selling author”😭😭

Total agree that Chatgbt is best used as a collaboration tool. Recently I had to go through something really hard, my dog accidentally swallowed a sewing needle, and it turned into a serious emergency. The surgery to save his life costs $5,500 I used ChatGPT to help me write my GoFundMe description and TikTok scripts to get the word out. It didn’t do the work for me, but it helped me organize my thoughts & to refine the message. Shameless plug but heres the link for my dogs gofundme ( https://gofund.me/7661f749 ) Love you girlsssssss lotsss

Hey Over overworked and underpaid marketing manager here!! I use AI to help me come up with content ideas, helping me organize things into an SEO friendly way and things along those lines, but that is simply because I am running all the marketing for 7 individual restaurants with very specific and different brand identities all by myself! I only use it for this and feel so unbelievably guilty about using it because of the environmental impact! Seeing the breakdown of how other normal everyday internet things impact the environment as well makes me feel less guilty about that one thing, but of course, the environmental impact is still an issue!

Kyuubi

AI doesn't do links well. I had a teacher who had us use ChatGPT for class, and I noticed it. I even tried to show my group mates from another class that you can't verify your sources on it, and none of the links opened to pages. If it was an actual link before, the page was deleted, and it's not good at updating the sources or finding new links either. Of course my groupmates didn't listen and use it again which sucked lol.

ai is truly a “judge me by my enemies”. if giant cooperations are shoving it down my throat and silencing the descent, i’m running! and the descent can’t be a tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist— i’m talking what scholars, environmentalists and cultural leaders think.

Tiffany

I understand it’s expensive to hire an editor _but_ your word processor has an editor built in and I trick I always use it to have text to speech read my stuff back to me. I’m not writing books but even with an important email or something you can read over mistake and the text to speech makes it more obvious.

Hi girlies!! The problem with AI using resources is that the processing servers are mostly concentrated in the same geographical area and pulling water from the cities and towns that surround them. Particularly in Iowa (native Iowa girlie here), where the state is already going through a record drought due to climate change. So even though AI doesn’t use much water for each search individually, the cooling required to keep the servers running is using up so many resources (around 25-30% increase in water demand because of the servers and using around 1/5th of the total water consumption in the area).

sandiinas

hey yall. just wanted to say i just got around to watching this now, but i like your measured response to ai. i'm a graphic designer, an illustrator and a teacher.. its definitely pervasive in education now, and we have to be really examining submissions from students because yeesh!! but yeah i basically share lily's view on it, ethical use should be paramount and ai should be heavily regulated, but i also share jessi's view that if it helps you do a job and you are a person in a position that needs to free up time, i couldnt call you a bad person for it. but yeah i just want to hammer down on the point that ai is really environmentally destructive, as well as deeply exploitative- a lot of models actually hire people from impoverished countries to train the ai on data that has to be processed by humans first. definitely not an ethical corner in this fight, but i appreciated hearing you guys talk about it regardless. ai has been so scary for the creative industry and it was nice to laugh at some sillies for a bit.

Hana

AI is absolutely already very prevalent in the classroom. Lesson plans are largely AI generated for new teachers, they DO already feel like babysitters. Im sorry but the duolingo ceo is right in his prediction. Whether thats good or bad is another story but AI is grading, making lessons, creating homework and tests.

Victoria Hittler

I'm SO HAPPY I finally had enough $ for the girlie's patreon!!! DREAMS DO COME TRUE☆♡☆♡☆!!! -Been a girlie since episode 1, im honored to be one ofyall!!!

Lil Vall

Justice for the em dash—I use them all the time and I am not an AI user

Olivia McGuire

There is a problem in traditional publishing, especially with certain imprints that try to rush out books to fit the current trending market, where they use AI for the covers and it's really disappointing.

Mairead Ryan

Sarah J Maas is mostly incredibly intricate and thought provoking fantasy with 3-5% spicy scenes. The spicy scenes are also deeply connected to the story line. These books are just straight up porn.

Karululu

I get where Luis Von Ahn is coming from because I’ve followed his career for a while now. He’s the guy that invented Captcha and Re-Captcha. He’s just a tech nerd at his core. He’s just a tech-first focused guy in general. So that’s obviously what he’s going to be looking forward to developing. Not saying it’s good or bad, just that tech nerds are gonna nerd. Especially one that’s been at the forefront of tech for so long and has done as well as he has.

Lynsey Poushay

Yeah, Sarah J Maas is a fantasy writer - I find the spiciness of ACOTAR greatly over-stated. These app-based fantasy books are a completely different category. Obviously, there's some spice in ACOTAR, but you could remove it & still have a fully fleshed-out story.

Joy

Thank you for being clear about AI’s environmental impact! I work for a state EPA and these data centers are ALL over the Midwest and are using our clean drinking water.

Joy

I’m only on Jessie’s side. No way I, a librarian, is reading ANY book written or edited by AI. Even one sentence written by AI.. you didn’t write the full book. I’m not using my one human life to read computer generated slop content.

Heather

Damn this was a depressing episode. Like it made me super panicky about the future. I personally will never enjoy an AI book. But I also hate romance. So 🤷🏽‍♀️

Scarlett

I HAVE NEVER RELATED TO A COMMENT MORE

Camilla harlowe

I know this was posted a while ago but in case anyone is wondering, the em dash is not exclusively used by AI nor is it a good indicator of AI. It is a real punctuation mark and can be used correctly, it’s just not one that people use commonly. But a good author or editor will use it.

Camilla harlowe

This is such a common misconception and it makes me so sad 🥲 erotica is the only book genre I’d define as porn (which is fine, no shade to erotica). But most ‘spicy’ romances are MAYBE 20% sex scenes at the very most. As a ‘smutty’ romance author I actually dislike the term smut because I find it degrading. I love my work and put my full soul in to my writing.

Shyan Vigil

I live in a state where there is A LOT of mining, and the amount of water lithium mines use and data buildings use is INSANE. They destroy the ranch and farm lands around them.

Audrey

(New Patreon member here which is why I’m responding late!) but I was just about to ask the same question & bring this up! I use the same kind of dash in my work emails or even when I edit presentation slides for my church; I’m pretty sure I’ve also used it in my high school and college essays from back in the day 2009-2018. I hope people don’t assume I’m using AI because of a dash because I’m not 🥲

Audrey

The author who has a personal assistant and the author who is a school teacher & mom are two different authors. (Not defending them by any means, they’re both horrible for using AI to write their books!)

Gandy

Lily, I respect your attempts at trying to remain unbiased, but I think your take is pretty wild for someone who admittedly doesn't read books. The argument of "oh well everyone is inspired by everything so there's nothing wrong with prompting AI to take inspiration from another human being" is not relevant. The issue here is that the 2nd author wouldn't know if the AI stole entire passages (only changing a few key elements like character names and specific plot devices) because they couldn't be bothered to even remove the prompt from the final product. When the AI says it took the "inspired" author's themes to fit them in with 2nd author's supernatural elements, it doesn't negate the possibility that the AI tool took literal passages of "inspired" author's work. This is why we always have to check AI on it's responses. Would the "inspired" author have a legal path to sue for plagiarism? Probably not, but it's ethically shady af and you don't need to play devil's advocate for these lazy human trash piles. I agree with Jessie wholeheartedly when she says each writer has their own voice and you can tell the difference even when the books are about similar things. I appreciate that you took the opportunity to clarify your statements, and I understand that you're not saying its okay to write books using AI. You're just suggesting it could have potential editing benefits. I disagree with you there as well, but I can understand and respect the point you're making and how it contributes to the larger conversation. Thank you girlies for diving into this and allowing me to crash out on your Patreon over a divisive topic. I'm clearly on a binge as you can tell by the date of my comment, and still loving the Patreon! <3
