The mom definitely wanted the best for Kousei but because of her illness she couldn't afford to teach him gradually the things he needed. She got desperate towards the end and tried to forcefully drill those lessons into him thinking it would help him later on.

Spot on analysis. Him choosing to remember his mom from before she got sick says so much about him. Also this show did a great job having a character you really hate to understand and even sympathize with is great writing

"Joy is the greatest friend, Love is an intimate confidante but Sorrow is the wisest of teachers". This is why Arima's mom always played Love's Sorrow and not Love's Joy. Friendship with a loved one shelters you from the real world, but teachings from a loved one always helps you in real world. This is also the difference between Kaori's Love and Tsubaki's(jock friend) Love for Arima. Kaori taught him to face his trauma head-on, but Tsubaki sheltered him from it. Both of their actions came from the place of love but had a vastly different impact on Arima.
