My understanding. Adam who confronted Jonas and Martha before the apocalypse, has traveled to the future (after the apocalypse) and is telling alternate universe Martha that he was always gulliable. Older Jonas that traveled with the young cast before the apocalypse got stuck in the 1800s until alternate reality Martha left the nuke juice that they kept working on. Eventually, that got figured out, Jonas got disfigured and became Adam. Why he became Adam and took on that moniker is still a mystery.
