sooo edward saying "why does he have to suffer the same fate as me" is kind of a callback to season 1. when they introduced him, it was explained that he was once an ascendant in the tower. he was even considered to become one of the next magia vander in his time in the tower. unfortunately, he was defeated by another candidate, so he came back to teach at rigarden. basically, he just has trauma from failing to ascend the tower all the way and doesn't want will to experience the same thing. in his mind, he thinks it's unfair for someone like will, who "has no magic," to be given the chance to ascend (because he thinks will is destined to fail).

Professor Edward is the closest to being a Magia Vander. They dont really explain it in the show, but essentially he not only made it to the tower but made it to the top. Gaining the right to challenge another ascendant to be the Magia Vander. But was totally outclassed and crushed. He then decided to train the next generation and protect his students(who want to be a MV) by stopping people who he deemed had no chance allowing them to live normal lives. Also Workner in his character profile card has a bunch of nicknames he's earned from students etc. Demon teacher, Remedial demon etc. But he is also called "immortal workner" Or in this translation "Workner the immortal" Episode 2 commerical break charcter card .

Yo, they really pulled a Snape with his character. He seemed like an asshole but he's maybe not. In all seriousness, though, seeing his reaction to Will being granted permission to ascend the tower is showing me that Edward has a tremendous amount of trauma associated with his experiences there. They really need to be expressed to a professional licensed therapist.

Ppl giving Edward so much shit. Ppl keep forgetting he was very close to becoming a Magia Vander , but failed in the end. The guy knows best out of everyone what it means to ascend the tower, so obviously he became a strict teacher because he knows that those who pass via the credit system but don't have the potential will become fodder. In his eyes, even if Will is very competent in close combat, that doesn't mean he will gain the upper hand against mages who know how to counter these kind of enemies. Plus Will's success here will alter the school system and give hope to others who want to ascend the tower but obviously they are not chosen ones with powers to save the world. Was Edward being a dick at times? Yes, but despite him not keeping his feelings in check, there is legit sound reasoning to his decisions.

Something can be just a cartoon and still have a message or touch on themes. Almost every type of story has some message because fiction exists in parallel to reality. The point is that the vast majority of anime is way more shallow in its exploration of human nature and similar topics compared to most forms of media. Just accept it's mostly mindless entertainment outside of the rare profound show instead of trying to make it more than it is. 'Peer pressure exists and it's 'courageous' to stand against it" isn't exactly some deep or revolutionary topic. You could watch an episode of Spongebob and find an equivalent 'fraction of the human heart.' I like anime because I like fantasy stories. I like magic and monsters and cool fight scenes. Whether or not other people think it's childish or 'just cartoons' has no effect on anything I do and I don't try to cope about it.

Big facts Ren, I think a lot of it has to do with empathy & being true to yourself. There’s a consistent theme of emotional intelligence across a lot of different anime I’ve seen. I feel like since they repress a lot as a society, more of how they really feel is expressed through art mediums like anime. The feelings they can’t always express, they entrust to the viewer

Basically every story in existence seeks to form some memory or to convey an emotion or ideal. It's nearly impossible to write any story and not touch on those concepts unless it's completely weird and experimental. This is in the comment section for Wistoria, by the way, where you're trying to defend its supposed depth as you're reading Dostoevsky. Even weirder to try and act condescending about the media I consume, when this is the most generic possible battle shounen of all time and you're trying to gas up a shallow trope about an unrealistically underestimated/unappreciated MC after they've demonstrated how powerful they are and have saved the day.
