This movie and the OG Jurassic Park shows why the CGI vs Practical argument is dumb the BEST effects comes from mixing practical WITH CGI. For example a lot of the space scenes were practical sets using CGI to make it look better and the main alien Rocky is a puppet worked by 4 master puppeteers with a little CGI help to make its movements fluid.

I knew this movie was gonna be good when Ryan Gosling did the goat scream in the beginning. That's not a script thing, that's actor having freedom of choice. Also the gold plaque you see when he wakes up, we actually sent similar in space on Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 but gold discs. Containing stuff like Man, Woman, hydrogen bond/ frequency etc etc. Carl Sagan worked on that. In the Store you can tell Carl is copying Grace and works on his experiment as a partner, similar to Rocky. Also Eva (UN official) has hard time understanding sarcasm and her cadance and mannerism is similar to Rocky. That's pretty funny! Also this was first time in a long time i've cried for people i didn't know SO SOON, like the funeral was so good and the score!! 👎🥲 There were 9 puppeteer on Rocky and 1 of them (James Ortiz) was casted on the spot as the voice actor, and his voice acting is talks of oscar nominations.

A really sad thing in the novel that's not really said in the movie is that Rocky waited in Tau Ceti for like? 54 years alone, surrounded by his dead crew. He tried to solve the problem alone for decades, thinking his planet doomed, until the Mary showed up with Grace and they saved both their worlds.

Couple of interesting science things you guys might have not understood. Completely reasonable, relativity is weird. The reason why the ship spinning gives them gravity is the same reason why fighter jet pilots feel excessive g forces. That feeling you get when a plane takes off from the ground, you getting forced back into your seat, same thing when you accelerate your car. This is also the same reason why Grace had gravity before he arrived. The ship was decelerating or "braking" like how you use brakes in a car and you lurch forward a bit in your chair but multiply that by a lot for a long time. This is where things get weird, light speed is essentially time travel. When travelling really really reaaaaaallly fast, something like 99 percent the speed of light, distance in front of you gets shorter. Space squeezes. The reason the trip back to earth takes 4 years instead of 11 is because Grace will be moving really fast, faster than anything else around him. To earth head be traveling for 11 years there and back, totaling 22+ years, meanwhile to him it'd be 8+ years. It would be similar for rocky. Tldr, science is hard. Fast for long time = time travel. Time is relative. Gravity can be manipulated. Blah blah.... I liked your reactions to this movie. I also cried.

May i make a recommendation if you have not seen it already but late to the game I saw Don't Look Up and it is a marvel. That and Project hail Mary are up at the top of my favorites. As always, thanks for being the best reactors in the world!

His decision to stay at the alien planet or not, I only realized later that there's another big factor. Even if he were to go back, I'd assume that it would still be roughly 15-20 years (11 years back to earth from the point they were at, plus however long it took Rocky to go back home from there). Now sure, maybe they made it faster, but I'd also wager that not THAT much better. So at best that's 10 years in a ship. And let's not forget that he also took maybe 10 years to make it to Rocky's world. So he's a let's say 30 year old guy, being generous. He flew there at 11 years. He's 41. He goes to Rocky's world, he's 50ish or more. Going back to earth would mean spending much of the time you have left just alone in space (or maybe with just a few aliens for company if some would make the sacrifice of time). By the time he went back not only would most of the people he know be gone, but also even the earth at that point would've been 30 years later. He's better off sending a message capsule or something, and getting some data of the current world. Or maybe setup long range communication over time. In his place, even with my family back home, I don't think I'd go, it's not worth it. I'd get to earth in my 60s-70s after spending already 20-30 years of my life in space.

This movie is one of my favs of all time!!! I love Andy Weir’s adaptations so far I watch The Martian about 40-50 times at this point. Weir is currently I believe working on another book not necessarily a squeal to this one, but is considering doing a sequel to this book. A few things to note as it wasn’t fully covered in the movie as in the book (small spoiler incase you wanna read the book or not), but Rocky’s planet has an atmosphere so dense it blocks radiation so for them as advance as they are the people of his planet never had a need to worry about radiation sickness as they didn’t have real need to go to space per say until now. With that the reason they had so much extra fuel was because they didn’t go out to space enough to have developed the concepts of Newtonian mechanics which include relativity and time dilation. So they had a lot more Astro phage. Rocky’s people were not on the same level time crunch as Earth effectively. Still wanting to save their star obvi but yeah. And all the numbers and math was converted to human years for us movie wise. Also for those didn’t know this was a passion project Ryan Gosling worked on for 5 years until it was ready for release and all. Space nerd!!! There is also about an hour of time cut and people kinda want a directors cut!

Idk if anyone else told you but apparently in the book they sent them all to space in a coma because if they didn't they would kill eachother, humans need alone time. Without that, they'd go crazy, hate each other, and eventually kill each other. so they put them in comas to completely eliminate that problem.

I'm so glad y'all loved this. It's probably now my favorite movie. I saw it 4 times in theaters and have been watching reactions to it since it came out on streaming. I'm even planning on turning it into a capstone review for my Physics course going forward. As a middle-school science teacher, it just hits different. If you're interested, here's a simple explanation of why the travel time seems confusing in the film: As you approach the speed of light, it takes more and more energy to speed up, so the fuel costs to go faster skyrocket. Additionally, some weird things start to happen as you speed up. Primarily, your perception of time slows down compared to an outside observer as you get closer to the speed of light. The ship travelled at about 75% the speed of light during the journey (accelerating at about 1.5x earth's gravity for half the trip, then decelerating at the same rate for the other half, which creates the illusion of gravity). At that speed the trip takes about 15 years for anyone on Earth, but for the people on the ship it only takes about 5 years (I don't remember the exact number). Rocky's species never discovered this effect (time dilation) so they packed fuel assuming they would be accelerating//decelerating for the entire trip. They didn't realize there was a maximum speed, so they assumed the trip would be shorter in real time, but would burn fuel for much longer. The result is that Rocky arrived "earlier" with a ton of extra fuel, but from the perspective of his planet, he's been gone for much longer than he experienced. When Grace does that fuel calculation at the beginning, he realizes he doesn't have enough to accelerate to the speeds where significant time dilation occurs. He'd basically be coasting at a slow speed for a century before getting back to Earth.

Honestly one of my favorite movies. Definitely movie of the year. Shit had me smiling, then crying, then smiling again. I also reacted basically like Lupa did during that whole "fishing" sequence. Also a little fun fact for you guys: You saw and were confused a bit at it taking him 4 years to get back when we thought it was around ten and apparently both time frames are correct. I don' know all the specifics but the closer you get to the speed of light the more time apparently kind of gets fucky and the Hail Mary was going fairly close to it so when he got to Tau Ceti it had been 10 or so years on earth but only about 4 or 5 for Grace because of him traveling at the speed he was.

The reason why the ship said it would take four years to travel 11 light years is because of how fast the ship is going. The closer you get to the speed of light the less time personally affects you. That means that the ship that Grace is on is traveling extremely fast. To everyone on Earth it takes you 11 years to get there, but to you it’ll feel like less.

He's a professor in the beginning. Doctorate. So he's at LEAST 25 for the degrees, but then to have career, leave it, get another carrer, he's obviously 32 or so. But still, let's say 27. It took him 11 years to get to planet, we're not even going to count the 1-3 years he was studying the cells, let's just say 11. 38. It took a little above a year at least between his studies, and eventually going back to Rocky. 40. The fastest possible for them to get to Rocky's world would be 6 years. But Rocky said "6 years longer", so it's obviously more. But even still. Even if minimum 6 years. 46. So if we ignore all even implied things, and STRICTLY use just the base numbers, he's 46. So rather he looked it to you because of their make up, or technology, or who knows what it doesn't matter. He's at least 46. But if you want the actual number it would be he's 32 in beginning. Studies the cells for 2 years 34. Flies out 11 years and a few months. He's 45. 2 years with Rocky to make all those cells and etc and go back to him. 47. From earth it was 11 years, with Rocky's tech it would've been 4.5 years to go back, so their tech is at least 2 times more powerful/faster. We'll still ignore that Grace said Rocky is really far from home so it's further than earth, let's just go with a conservative 10 years, the 4 to back to earth, plus 6 more years. Grace is 57 at the end. If you think otherwise, you're welcome to show me what math you'd use it to make it so. Grace is a genius and got his doctorate at 16. job career and etc he's 20 years old at the beginning? Ok let's go with that insane concept. 20. He only spent a few months somehow studying it and preparing despite them netioning years... ok... he flies for 11 years... 31. Ok now he's there with Rocky just a year somehow 32. He flies back with Rocky for 10 years. 42... Oh no let's say somehow it's just 8 years to go back to a place that's further. he's 40... From 40 to 10 years to go back to earth. 50. Dude would've been 50 in Earth... having spent 22 years of his life on a ship... And going back to an earth struggling to revive...

What I assumed was the probes would've always taken 11 years, but Rocky either gave him enough astrophage to cut the trip even shorter or it's space-time conversion stuff. Either way, PHM had already factored in the ~20 years into the mission plan, so I don't think it's entirely fair to fault Grace for not potentially cutting the trip short. Like, they did fully expect him to die in space.

Some fun details from the book not in the movie: The earth gets absolutely wrecked in a lot of ways- in order to heat the planet Stratt nukes Antarctica to accelerate global warming, in order to power the production of Astrophage they pave over much of the Sahara Desert to turn it into a solar farm, turning the surrounding nations into energy superpowers. Grace asks Stratt what her twenty year plan is, in the movie it gets interrupted by the explosion. In the book she explains that her retirement plan is once the astrophage problem is solved she expects to spend the rest of her life in jail cells and courtrooms as a scapegoat for all the laws they had to break to make the Hail Mary happen. Also at one point Stratt gets sued for copyright infringement by putting all of human knowledge on the Hail Mary, she basically sits down at the court, tells the judge they have no right nor legal ability to tell her what to do, and leaves. The reason Rocky had so much extra fuel to donate to Grace is because the Eridians never worked out relativity.

This movie is amazing. While the character writing is obviously the strongest element of this movie, I really like the science behind it. This isn't hard sci-fi but even without being that the science makes sense. Rocky's people not knowing about radioactivity- the species processes things via sound not sight so already they are not naturally inclined to go deep into the EM spectrum. They use xenonite as their construction material- this only makes sense if its extremely common on their planet. Similar to how we make a lot of our tech with aluminum as it's the most abundant metal in our crust. Xenonite is made of Xenon which is a noble gas. Noble gases are chemically inert and tie this with it being common- radioactive elements on Erid must be extremely rare. Rocky's people not knowing about relativity- the species is really long lived- Rocky is in a relationship for 186 years. Thus, space travel taking as long as it does is no impediment to them so they wouldn't have to ask the questions that would lead to discovering relativity. Them not knowing about relativity also explains why Rocky's ship has extra fuel. They likely planned for a longer trip but due to time dilation- his ship used less fuel than they planned for.

What's missing in your math is relativity. It would only be around 4-5 years travel time for Grace. Yes it would be another 16 years or so for everyone back on earth, but he'd only experience a fraction of that due to relativity. If you can pull 1.5 Gs of acceleration continuously for the first half of a trip and then same deceleration at the second half of the trip (literally what they did with the astrophage) you can make it pretty much anywhere in the known universe in a human lifetime. The speed only gets infinitesimally closer to lightspeed as you continue to accelerate, but every little bit of extra speed exponentially increases the dilation of time. Traveling at speeds like that mean a 5 light-year trip takes only a little less time than a 10 or 20 light-year trip, for the person moving at those speeds. Everyone else outside that frame of reference experiences the full amount of that time

I think relativity has you confused. Tau ceti is 11 light-years away from earth. The journey would take 11 years regardless. For the thing moving at near lightspeed, it would be 4 years, but for everyone else including earth, it would be 11 years.

You can cut the travel time shorter, PHM doesn't violate the speed of light. Light takes 11 years to travel 11 light-years The extra fuel meant Grace could make the return trip at near lightspeed, which would take 11 years. But for him, due to time dilation from going so fast, he'd only experience 4 years. Everyone on earth would still be waiting that full 11 years either way.

One thing from the book that I wish they had put in the movie was when Grace asks Stratt what she's going to do she tells him that she's going to spend a lot of time in the Hague. There's a bit more emphasis in the book that she's been pressuring and threatening countries to get the resources needed for Project Hail Mary and plans on spending a lot of time in court and behind bars in order to save the planet. I think that detail makes her a little more human.

little fun fact for you guys, in addition to speed, mass can also manipulate time. if you are in open field the time ticks faster, if you are at the bottom of the pyramid lets say, your clock moves slower. this is also why near black hole time gets slower and at one point it stops. there are 2 things that effect time 1. is speed so faster speed = slow time. 2. mass heavy = slow time.

actually i watched authors interview and his science is pretty real. actually in book he had a part where rocky was confused because, he saw tau seti being close so he slowed down and as he slowed the star went far away. so he experienced the relativity while traveling and didnt know what it was. they had to cut these parts from movie because of time contraints
