Day 21 of asking yall to react to berserk 1997

So, Taryon is Sam’s character, Scanlan left the group for a bit and this is that season. Also, Sam had throat surgery for cancer when they were recording for this season, so they also wrote around his recovery. Scanlan is coming, but it’s mostly a Scanlan-lite season by design.

Ok I was wrong in the last comment section regarding the show. But in the campaign, Scanlan and Taryon was played by the same guy so Tary is the Scanlan stand-in for now.

Tary was Sam's character in the campaign that replaced scanlan for a bit because Sam's had scanlan leave but they decided to have someone else voice Tary because Sam didn't thought he could do a voice that was different enough from Scanlan. Not much Scan man this season but I think next season he'll be back full force

If I remember correctly, Vax calls Vex “Stubby” because she stepped in lava once and hobbled around for a bit. Stub for a foot.

Two factors - during their first campaign, Sam did leave Scanlan behind for a while and played a new character which was Taryon for a while. It should be explained. But also during the recording of this season Sam was recovering from throat cancer, I don’t think he was ever gonna voice Taryon anyways but they got Wayne Brady.

I doubt Scanlan will be much of a presence this season, but don't quote me on that. In-universe, Scanlan was fully gone at this point and his player Sam replaced him with Taryon. In terms of the actual production of this show, S4 was recorded when Sam was diagnosed with/recovering from throat cancer, so they wrote around him for the most part.

2 things. Every DM campaign has one of these: a encounter where they hard lock you into either fighting completely unarmed or starting unarmed. Second thing; I was laughing when that fire Ashari was getting sight deprived and Vox machina is just standing there and I'm like, "yup, welcome to DnD unskippable cutscences." Every Campaign has them. Roshi might be asking why're they just standing there and i'm here crying "they can't Roshi, it's a cutscene T_T."

So Scanlan actually played Taryon for this part of the campaign but he sadly couldn't voice his character because he was getting surgery for his throat cancer (which is a DIABOLICAL thing for a voice actor to get) So Wayne Brady is taking over as the voice for Taryon

Y'all need to remember this is D&D, shit happens in turns. You can't keep getting upset if people aren't acting quickly enough because that's just not how it worked at the table. Yeah maybe they could and should they have adjusted for that when they turned it into a cartoon, but a lot of the dramatic moments throughout the narrative are hinged on this core idea of everyone getting to take their go. Its like "talking is a free action," you just have to live with it.

That's not actually why they cast Wayne! They've passed off a lot of NPCs and such to other voice actors in general, mostly for representation reasons and I presume so Matt doesn't have to voice every other character lmao, but since they always planned to keep Scanlan around in the show (if split from the rest of the party, similar to Pike and Yasha), it wouldn't make a ton of sense for Sam to voice two main (your mileage may vary re: Tary, but you know what I mean) characters.

But he did voice BOTH of them during the campaign. . . Even once at the same time during a short one off if I remember correctly. Also I'm guessing you mean why specifically WAYNE was chosen, and not denying the fact Sam literally got cancer cause' if you are, shame on you

Hahaha, I get it, Scanlan is my favourite too. We'll get more of him later, for reasons that others have already mentioned. You do heavily feel the absence of ScanMan though, 100%, imo

I know they wanted to go in a different direction than the campaign and needed to skip some stuff for time, but scanlan's temporary exit from the show made so much sense and was more interesting in the og campaign because he blows up at vox machina for not taking him seriously, not bothering to learn anything about him, and them endangering his new relationship with his daughter so he leaves with her. I think that if they kept it dramatic then it would also make it more believable that he misses keyleth's coronation. scanlan's departure was just SO well done in the campaign. sam is a really great actor and storyteller.

...Why the fuck would I deny that Sam got cancer? The cancer he filmed an entire PSA announcement about? What kind of random ass word-twisting even prompted something to "shame" me for? 😭 If Sam is already present in a show as Scanlan, who they are still including rather frequently (in comparison), it would be redundant and confusing for him to voice two characters at the same time -- as opposed to the campaign, where Scanlan was fully gone from the table and the two PCs rarely shared a scene in the same room together. Especially for show-only watchers. He openly says that he didn't think he could do two voices that were distinct enough for each PC.
