Amazing first ep! Pacing is kinda quick but looking forward to experiencing this for the first time

Giyuu

I figured :) man I grew up watching this show and the movies so I was skeptical with watching this but I here it’s a lot more lighthearted / funnier than the original which was kinda dark and serious for the most part

Zee

Woahhhh. Early as heck upload

Rhys Varkaidies

Bro I haven't watched but this is the OG, right? It's so good and it gets waaaaaay better in Stand Alone Complex

SakuraBlossom

Good lord why are the subtitles so fast??? Lmao

Raymond Terry

That's how it was on Amazon. I was temporarily worried.

Maserati

Watch the ending song

Helpy

Soundtrack and animation goes hard but it's moving too quick for me, no character introductions or nothing just thrown into chaos 😭

Badsos123

Hopefully they can watch the OG 1995 movie Ghost in the shell. I still have it on VHS!! LOL

Sare

This is based on the manga, every other adaptation was basically a new story like Full Metal Alchemist 2003.

Sare

This was kind of hard to follow.

Itanna

Wish you guys would've watched the ending, it featured Daniel Caesar

L S

me when im LARPing lol... i love GITS but its not the OG by definition of OG- akiras manga came out well a decade before the GITS manga, same as blade runner. theres plenty of other works that are also accredited founding this genre that precede GITS.

Badman

As a sub watcher, I don't know what it is about Ghost In The Shell subtitles, but I do know that every time I watch, those subtitles be whooping my ass. Sometimes I gotta rewind or pause just to get what was said 🤣.

L S

yeah they are ass, can't wait to enjoy the dub

J Man

It's interesting watching this after most of us all watched the Stand Alone Complex series

J Man

While we've been getting a lot of modern remakes in recent years, It's also very interesting seeing old school animation styles with modern animation. The biggest thing that always stand out is the 80s style anime haircuts everyone be having

Rhys Varkaidies

Its been a while, but the manga had different versions too, no?

Seibahhh

roshi pleeeaaasseeeeeee fix the aspect ratio like damn

Prince

This episode felt like a fever dream lol

Professor00

My phone won’t do airplay to my TV but it’s only for your stuff. Other people’s Patreon doesn’t do that. Is there a fix you can suggest?

Lucius Reinhard

I’m so excited to see them all again years after watching Stand Alone Complex

Baby Sasuke

Y'all should definitely check out the og 1995 movie at some point I got it in 4k and it's absolutely beautiful

Joseph C Gdaniec

yeah but those were made back when manga was not well known or accessible in the west. This art style and tone for the characters is how the mangaka wrote the story as well.

King Castle

Idk growing up in the early 2000s this was my first and many others first interaction with this genre

Grelk

Gonna drop this because its too fast for them in ep 3 smh

WillGlacier

Fuck I love when they take old art styles but animate it as a modern anime. Especially the hair styles

WillGlacier

I've actually seen this get a lot of hate BECAUSE it wasn't as moody as the older version, which is crazy since THIS is the tone the manga had. Like people be complaining like they can't just rewatch all the old shit that already exists Also I feel like the THE REASON why it was so fast paced is the same reason FMAB was so fast paced during the early episodes, because they QUICKLY wanna get past the stuff people who have watched the older stuff already know

Rustyshackleford

Stand alone complex is my favorite idk why they kept trying to remake the series vs just giving us more stand alone complex, but this version looks promising

Danger Tomato

Coulda been mr robot but yall signing autographs for people who like going outside ew

LaTesha

I haven't watched ghost in the shell in a looong time. I'm with lupa i don't remember much either lol. Now I want to watch .hack//sign again too

Delinda Arts

We're a long way from Stand Alone Complex thank god lmao. I can always put my trust in Science Saru. This looks so damn good.

Teejay

Fr I like modern anime a lot but the 80s style haircuts and aesthetics/character designs are always so pleasing

JD

Careful with that abbreviation big bro 😭

DIOR

Do NOT abbreviate cyberpunk NOOOOOOO

Cassidy

Don't know if you guys know this but it's only 1 volume I was wondering why it was so fast too

ShaquanVirse

Them subtitles went by so fast I caught a headache

woahmikey

I thought yall were gonna say yall seen the ghost in the shell movie with Scarlet Johansson lol

woahmikey

Also where could you watch this anime? Crunchyroll?

Sare

Oh I don't know, I haven't read it myself.

Aye Jaye

I mean they did try to give us more Standalone Complex with 2045, it kinda sucked.

Mike A

It wouldn't be as 'fun' as a watch, but they should be watching Stand Alone Complex instead. That show is the GOAT

Slim

same i used to play the trilogy of .hack//gu alot

Tancho24

Chat is it worth it?

LaTesha

I need to look it up and see if lupa is correct about either a new series or a reanimation of the older .hack//sign series 🤔

Xenasta

You guys need to switch to the dub, it’s pretty good.

Eric

Bruh, Cyberpunk the actual tabletop game predates it by like a decade, let alone the genre

MrOuijaII

I definitely would not have expected ya’ll to not have seen the 95’ GitS, i figured that was required viewing along with Akira and Ninja Scroll for older anime fans, but no time like the present. Would love a reaction to the original, it’s a classic for a reason, although I’ve liked every incarnation of the story minus ScarJo live action

FortuneFavors

You guys might need to adjust the aspect ratio, all the top subtitles are being cut off. Also heard dub might be the way to go on this one, the subs were lowkey giving Lord of the Mysteries for how fast they were going.

Saphthings

The way roshi said 2029 is 2 years from now and no one corrected him had me counting on my fingers to make sure I'm not crazy lol

PJ Rivera

Man what a blast from the past its been so long since I watched anything ghost in the shell related

steviemoe

Yeah when I watched , that threw me all the way off 😂

Prime

It’s on Amazon

Yoru

Please never use that abbreviation for cyberpunk ever again.

Lucius Reinhard

I haven’t read the original manga so I’m not sure when they’ll introduce the basic concepts, so I’ll try a rough one based on what i saw in Stand Alone Complex (forgive me if things aren’t 100%): those ports on the neck are a basic input/output implant most people have to connect to PCs and other electronics in GITS; a lot of people also have cyberbrains, another implant that lets them connect to the Internet in their own head, surf the net, talk without using their minds (functionally telepathy); last thing is the brain dive, which lets people poke around in your head, Motoko does this a lot to gather info, evidence, etc. but others can do it too, also having a cyberbrain makes it vulnerable to hacking, though in the case of GITS the benefits of a cyberbrain are probably like when mobile phones became mainstream and then almost a necessity for daily life

Tbdovan

Folks just love abusing the word larper 🤣 for most people the idea of a futuristic world like cyberpunk started with GiTH. So it isn't larping, and honestly not even how you use the phrase.

GormleyPeach

Liking this so far. I always found the OG to be so incredibly boring. I tried to watch it a couple of different times through the years and just can't get through it. Want to see how this plays out

J Man

Always love King Gnu openings (King Gnu is the person that did the openings to Ranking of Kings and Banana Fish. He also played Eric Tomizawa in Yakuza 8)

J Man

I like this version of The Major compared to Stand Alone Complex too. SAC's was more of your stoic Trinity type. Here she's a quirky and badass tomboy. As Lupa mentioned, Stand Alone Complex was very moody.

Michael Kaiser

This show is beautiful I’m loving it

Jason Marbach

Genuinely not sure what the beef anyone has is, I kinda fcked with it. Yeah it’s different from previous GITS shows/movies, but why on earth is that considered bad? Bring on ep 2

Jason Marbach

Sorry, but actual cyberpunk started with moebius in metal hurlant. One of the biggest influence (in his own words, look it up) on Katsuhiro Otomo, who wrote the genre redifining Akira under that influence well before GITS was a thing. Also, the first truly cyberpunk aesthetic in cinema (also influence by moebius) is widely considered to be the OG Bladerunner movie, which released in theaters ~6 months before Akira began, both in 1982. GITS didn’t come along until 1989. Just wanted to jump in with the receipts for anyone who cares

Jason Marbach

Sorry, I see someone above mentioned the same thing I did, just in less detail. GITS was born out of the craze that Bladerunner and Akira kicked off in film media, thanks to the influence of Moebius. Was my main point.

Jason Marbach

I don’t know if I’d personally say boring so much as it’s very, VERY dry. I love seeing the major and batou and the rest with a real personality

Zachary Provenzano

i actually tried dub out because amazon prime is doodoo with subtitles the english dub was actually really good i think

Jason Marbach

Having watched both now, I’m surprised to find that I agree. Dub wins on this one

SnailSpray

lupa saying its been "years" then sayin it came out in "90 somethin" no brohterman its been *decades unc

Kenny vo

I dont know but i also want to see dot hack to come back

Stephen D

Personally I still prefer the Stand Alone Complex universe, but I am excited to see how the series will unfold as it was originally intended in animated form since I never read the manga.

L S

im praying they dont turn this into shonen... the tonality seems very antithetical... one moment is kids being brainwashed and then the next is a robot with a cute UWU :3 cat face??? damn if thats accurate to the manga, then the movie was just infinitely better at picking a tonality that actually works with the setting... also the pacing was horrific here, i cant lie. but it was only one episode and i dont want to jump the gun yet and compare a series to a movie so im willing to give it the benefit of the doubt even if its very very goofy which is antithetical to the very genre its set in... i'm quickly understanding and respecting the changes made in the movie like with the goofy cat face robots being cut, even in SAC they were eventually put on pause... waiting for the seinen part cause thats what it should be... also ima just say that while its usually true, it isnt a universal basic fact that in every single case the original work is the best and this might be one of these cases

L S

i would not say its bad its just that this fun loving adventure park vibe doesnt suit the setting at all and the movie did exactly that very well... like common even if you like it you should be able to see why some people dont like this jumping around from kidnapped kids being brainwashed by the government to oh look here cute cat smile robot and ISNT IT TOO FUNNY that when something breaks the major just hits it over and over... like please i beg they dont keep rinse and repeating this joke... feels like its wearing the seinen / cyberpunk things only as aesthetic. but im judging off of this first episode although i doubt we will see a big shift in tonality, anime almost never does that. another point is sexualization. the 1995 movie did it in a mature, non lusty gooner way. this here is much more that and its giving shonen vibes where shes standing in the most obnoxious poses and camera angles but theyre not showing nudity... while the 1995 movie did the opposite, it showed nudity but just not in this insanely implicit way.

Speedy

Yall should watch that Devil May Cry anime on Netflix. Just finished the second season and its fire.

N.L H

GTO next?

Balenseeks

idk whats goin on but the intros slaps im in

Edwin Melendez

Favorite part of any of the iterations! The Tachikoma Tanks!!!!

Rin Okumura

The character design back then was so sexy. literally timeless beauty. Nowadays leaned more over the cute/ moe side.

Lucius Reinhard

Also at 17:50 Batou calling them a ghostless puppet is just the longform way of calling it an AI, its not an actual person

hypokokoro

It might seem crazy what I'm bout to say

Ergo Somnium

Absolutely love Ghost In The Shell. When I was younger I simply could not appreciate how awesome it was. About 10 years ago, I really saw how good it was. Also how ahead of its time it truly is. It's like the Matrix mixed with Edgerunner, except humans are the ones with cybernetics.

Ergo Somnium

Lol I remember last year some time I was talking with my niece about this Lil girl that my mom babysits occasionally. I called her "hidden forbidden niece" on account of the fact that my brother used to date the mother, so its quite possible thats his secret love child, though no one in the family will confirm or deny. Then I had to go back and explain the reference to her 🙄 man I miss .hack 🤣

Ergo Somnium

Ghost in this case means soul, "Ghost In The Shell", kinda describes us all to be fair.

meguminis.

Same thing with Magic Knight Rayearth. The 90s art style is throwing me off with this new quality.

David James

Ghost in the Shell was a classic anime movie and series (and manga not many people in the west read). There's a reason The Matrix got its inspiration from that.

Dalton Skaggs

A lot of the characters in this series are actually cyborgs. They've placed their human brains (which is essentially their ghosts or human souls) into mechanical bodies; brain dives are essentially the where their mechanical bodies are on auto-pilot while their brains are connected together via the net. There are actual robots in this series that don't have 'ghosts' and are used for different purposes. But many of the characters that you'll see are mostly humans with mechanical bodies, the majority of the time some of the characters will still retain their functional human bodies with cyborg variations to them; Major Kusanagi is an exception in that her entire body is mechanical while only her human brain remains.

Indifferent Denji

Can we get a devilman crybaby reaction sometime? I really want more older anime or at least reboots of older series. Yaiba and now GITS really are making me hopeful for a gantz reboot someday

Honored one

I'm dying omgoshhhh I read about the subtitles moving fast but now I'm seeing it and this is atrocious 🤣🤣 Lupa got me crying dawg

SuperioRios

I watched GitS movie starring Scarlett Johansson. It was pretty good 😁

Martin

Larp Alert :(

Lauren B.

I used to watch Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex on Adult Swim. It was probably one of my first exposures to more mature anime themes

Blackest Knight

Why they turn the Major into a character from Gunsmith Cats?😭 TBH...I had fun! I just think it's gonna be a mid series. It's not gonna be anything like SAC, and I'm okay with that. It gave me VERY cowboy bebop vibes and I just don't know enough yet to say if this is gonna be JUST a fun ride or if it will carry any real weight. This kinda felt like Rick and Morty: Funny at it's core, but unhinged action and about 5 minutes of "real stakes". I can see some one off stories each episode that might hit the feels or hit the brain differently, but it's too early to tell. All in all, I'm HERE FOR THE MAJOR 🍑

MBA

While I still prefer Oshii’s ‘95 take on gits, I’m still really interested in this one

Robert Smith

Not to mention, Neuromancer came out well before Ghost in the Shell. Same as "Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep"

Gilthwixt

Like Roshi said, this is actually closer to the original source material than 1995 movie. I think they can both exist, and if anything Roshi and them can just watch the movie if they feel the need.

Lauren B.

Apparently I read fast because I didn't even realize the text was moving fast until Lupa started freaking out 🤣🤣

‎ ‎ ‎

Watch Fear street all 3 of them . You will not regret it they are amazing movies

L S

Oh sure. But, closer to the source material doesnt mean good tho, it was one good looking but horribly paced to the point where it misses opportunities, questionable tonality thats all over the place, the music seemed completely off like way closer to something like james bond... Doesn't really seem to be sure what it wants to be. Hopefully it'll find its footing but with only 10 episodes each misstep costs...

L S

@tbdovan so blade runner doesn't exist? akira did not release 7 years before the movie? you only call out the larping point because you clearly felt spoken to. larping is live action roleplaying and yall clearly seem to want to roleplay a fan who knows what theyre talking about. you evidently don't since you just ignore works that are as popular if not even more, that preceed Gits by a decade... so how did i not use the phrase right... this dude gotta be a bot lmao

Charlie baker

Can be good can be bad, og ranma looks way better then the remake

Charlie baker

Nah 2000s dmc the animated series clears

Mxri

Just watched the movie last night for the first time and holy shit.. what a different vibe.

General Grevious

Do I need to watch the original to understand what’s going on😭?

Krype

Is this a remake or a sequel or something?

Sky

Looks like the new .hack project that Lupa is thinking of is an RPG that got announced not too long ago. Sounds like it might be a restarting of the series as a whole and, like GitS, it's a Bandai Namco property, so maybe they're gonna start developing more of the stuff they control into anime. After how successful Infinity Castle was financially, I bet a lot of companies are are starting to recognize the financial potential of high quality anime/animated series.

King of New York

I've been loving the Ranma 1/2 remake. I really want them to react to it. I think they'll really enjoy it.

King of New York

I thought the majority of people liked SAC more than the original 2 movies?

King of New York

Their reaction to the fucked subtitles at the beginning got me💀

J Man

Ranma 1/2 might be the best of the old school revivals. I've been loving it as well!

Teejay

That’s odd….this is the original vibe of manga, if anything the movie deviated in a lot of ways. But then again no one’s stopping anyone from watching the movie, if you prefer the movie then go for it

Woah cool!

I half like this art style, but also the movie's art style is so beautiful that I just can't but find this kinda bad to watch.

Coatl45

I just wish Amazon put that much effort into all their dubs. Tonbo’s dub was straight ass.

Coatl45

So they’re cyborgs, not androids. That’s what I thought when Makoto was talking about that bot that blew up being “just a speaker”.

Jaelyn Mcgee

it's on tubi so hopefully they'll be able to watch it.

GigaDirt

This show putting my literacy to the absolute test. God damn

GigaDirt

If you consult with the magical wizard Google, they might be able to tell you the answers you seek

GigaDirt

I wish LMAO. I thought I read fast but apparently not.

lilllllllllil

We gotta get that Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002) reaction now

Didier

I hate to be that guy, and I know my response is probably gonna sound annoying and unnecessarily dragging and nitpicky, so I'm truly sorry for that, but "the original" is not Mamoru Oshii's adaptation. It is Masamune Shirow's 1989 manga, which this anime actually finally aims to cover. So, in an ironic turn of events, this is closer to being "the original" than the popular movies that impacted the late 90's. And I know that the movies are more famous than the manga, and that not everybody have actually read it, but I personally grew up reading it, so I feel like it's finally being done justice here.

MrOuijaII

Well.. your certainly right about one thing haha Your technically correct obviously but you have to look at it in the context of most Americans around that time. I’ve been watching anime since way before I ever should of been allowed to, and GitS along with other anime movies and OVA like Akira, Ninja Scroll, Bubblegum Crisis, Guyver, M.D. Geist, Slayers etc were generally all we had, renting from tower video, blockbuster, finding niche VHS with that MANGA logo not even really knowing what a Manga was, just new it meant cool violent adult cartoons. Most of us did not know these came from comic books and it is certainly not something that was readily available. If you were reading GitS in 89 that’s dope and your also probably much older than me lol But for most people, the 95 adaption is the ‘original’, even if not technically correct.

Didier

My childhood favorite manga, along with 3x3 Eyes, Gunsmith Cats, Crying Freeman, Vampire Princess Miyû, GUNNM, Bastard!!, You're Under Arrest, etc. Maybe I'm just a boomer boomering, but I feel like old school mangas had a much more "mature" feel to them that you rarely get from popular works anymore. Now most manga/anime characters are infantile and emotionally volatile, and are almost always 16 years old by default, as if being older than 25 years old was enough to automatically send them into the "ossan" realm. I don't know if it's related to the explosion of the shônen genre, but the 2000s-2010s felt like it was mostly kiddy characters going on journeys of self-discovery. Now that Japan's demographics is dropping like moths from a burning lightbulb, it feels like the maturity is back again.

Alex

Doesn't matter Lupa =)

kai. 🩶

i felt like i was watching this in 2x speed 😭

sol jam

I see why all the previous adaptations adapted it the way they did. The comedy are a bit too slapstick for me but The world is very intriguing and it seems that the comedy exists to soften the dark parts

Rei Zero

Let’s goooo

Legion

where ep 2 at?

Gate

kind of interesting how different she is in here (more faithful to the manga) versus the movie where she's so serious. She's so cute and moe here.

Courtney Anne Thomas

@ L S no offence man but calm down why you sound so triggered to a simple comment he never discredit it in other projects. He was just given props to one of the OG‘s.
