I'll be honest, I think this movie is mid at best. I like a slow, ponderous movie, but there is *nothing* happening for 70% of this, with literally zero purpose. Aerion Targaryen and his girlfriend exist solely to get killed off, and there is absolutely no character growth (or arcs) for either of the leads. It feels like a 45 minute movie they stretched to 100 minutes. I love liminal horror, but this movie just isn't interesting.

Liked the movie not the choices they chose for the characters to make I understand that sure not everyone makes rational and logical decisions when faced with the unknown, but your telling me the characters don’t know how to make a single rational or logical decision then that’s just poor writing it will frustrate the viewer and throw them out of the flow of the movie, fantastical movies that are not bound by reality are great because they can sell us the idea that they r pushing can be real and make the viewer believe in it even if they know it’s not real, but when I see a movie and I’m constantly seeing characters make decisions that makes no sense in the moment not once or twice but every time, it throws me out of the loop, other than tht I’d say the movie itself was cool in the way how they portrayed the back rooms, and made it felt ominous and mysterious making it a place tht intrigues ppl to keep wanting to come back to it and find the answers to wat it is if there r even answers to wat the back rooms r.

I had the exact opposite reaction. I absolutely dislike stuff like Mandela Catalog. None of that analog horror stuff is scary to me. SCP isn't even creepy. It's all down to the format. This was way better imo. And the parts you said were boring were setting up character, which is important to understand this portrayal of the backrooms. This particular realm is a reflection of their minds.

There's a lot of signs actually that point to him being abusive in some way to his wife, the copy version of his wife (I presume because she's a redhead) literally starts shrieking and running away from the big Pirate Clark version, and his copy is the only one of them that is actually aggressive and violent towards humans and tries to kill them.

re: the final comments about needing the alternative perspective in his marriage issues, I beg to differ. I think it works so much better as is. By only getting Clark's perspective on the relationship we get an understanding that it wouldn't matter what happened in reality or what his wife thinks, because all Clark cares about is what he decided was true. Just like how he yaps about what he's discovered about the backrooms, and how he thinks he's right about the reality he developed for it in his own mind.

I think presentation wise they definitely did a great job bringing the Backrooms to life. Bare in mind that my knowledge on the subject is only limited to the games and few youtube videos of deep dives I've seen. The movie itself is alright and I personally feel as if a movie with something like this wouldn't really fly, especially when trying to tie minor narratives to this, i.e. Clark and Mary and how weakly it was handled. I probably would've preferred a show of this tackling different characters either stumbling across the Backrooms entering willingly or not while we get to experience different entities and sections. With the choice of tying a narrative to the characters, minor or major.

This is the first I have seen in regards to this "Backrooms"... I hate horror (childhood traumatic experience with horror) so I was glad I got to watch it with live commentary to help me break my immersion. This was an amazing movie... wow... now I'm hooked on this style of storytelling!

I have no connection to The Backrooms and for a small indie film by a 20 year old this was pretty decent and the imagery was great. But I didn't really enjoy as much as I wanted. I don't want to say it is "half baked", but I get we are supposed to get that Clark is actually a jerk because of how easy he fell into his "role" in the Backrooms, but it still feels kind of unearned. Like Roshi said, as far as we know he was working hard and just wanted to know why he was paying so much money for energy bills. It's literally "tell, don't show" which is a mortal sin to most film makers. Not to do the internet thing of comparing to popular things, but there is no moment like in "Obsession" where Bear says "what's so wrong being with me". Obviously there are clues all over he is awful, but that makes it clear that the only thing he thinks is wrong is that Nikki is embarrassing him in public. Here we just get the therapist telling us that he whines a lot. Also I was with Sheera the whole time in terms of getting annoyed at stupid decisions.

The fact that Clark was able to communicate with the "Backrooms pirate Clark" means he wasn't being harmed by it UNTIL he was given the "green light" to never evolve and to remain the prrson he is. Never taking accountability, thus never growing. Staying stunted in his trauma, and with him accepting that, the "Backrooms Pirate Clark" eating him and throwing him around was symbolic to his mental illness or his shadow side consuming him. Desecrating what sane parts of him were left because he made the decision to not heal from his past trauma. Theres so much more that could be theorized.

I went to the theather to see Backrooms and I had a fun time, however, I thought "Well, it could've been more". Then I got home, started looking for hidden details on the movie and I was so impressed by the amount of things you can miss on a first watch. That elevated the movie a lot for me. In the case of obsession, that was pure uncomfortable horror, I did like it a lot, but it does miss a lot in a second watch. Both movies are opposites in that matter.

Its not just that he can build his own reality in the Backrooms: the Backrooms is somewhere where Clark can be alone and be as destructive to himself, his surrounding, and the replicas as he wants. He thinks he was born with this instinct to hurt and push away others and the Backrooms is a place where he can do that without anyone judging him or making him feel bad for his actions or decisions. That's why he's so fascinated with the replicas - they dont feel pain and they have no ego so theyre the perfect victims/companions for him. They're like furniture - he can manipulate them and move them around however he wants and when hes done with them (when they break) he can replace them with new ones. Its one giant rage-room for him where can finally be himself.

By the way I think when Clark first entered the room with the purple chair (which IS the one he broke), that's when captain clark was created. we never see him wearing the costume again and we see shoes in the place of where his assistant manager and her boyfriend were standing. they were likely also copied and probably eaten by captain clark, the chair is slightly crooked so it might of copied him mid fall which is why his face has an almost shocked expression and his proportions are so much stranger, it replicated a moving person.

Not gonna lie, im the type where I see some weird illusion in reality id probably investigate out of curiousity. A lot of the things that are self evidently scary in media just aren't in reality. Probably end up in the backrooms immediately.

Definitely like how Kane incorporated his found footage style into the movie and of course the set pieces were great. It is clear that long-form narratives is something he needs to work on as there are huge gaps and leaps in the storytelling. The ending was the weakest part of the film, but Kane has a bright future ahead of him once he gets his narrative chops down for making 2-hour long stories instead of shorter, confined YouTube ones.
