A little clarification from the light novel: he's not a DIFFERENT person now, he just re-learned to appreciate who he is as a person. His internalized self loathing got reset when he got reset, so he had to relearn the lesson of how to love yourself. The pre-wipe Subaru gained all the memories and experiences of the new Subaru, and they became one again. When that happened Louis Arneb (Gluttony) got kicked out of his body. Because it was never actually Subaru. This whole arc was her in his body, but she THOUGHT she was him. Louis Arneb's plan was to experience death by literally becoming Subaru. The "New" Subaru was always her. She put herself in his body without her own memories. Then she fucked off when she realized he lives in actual hell lol. "You'll regret this" from Subaru was said sorrowfully, because he felt bad for her. He realized what she was going to do and felt bad because he knew what she was about to experience when she "Became" him.

To explain what you were asking in the end as an Anime Only as well: Subaru's Authority is implied to be "Return by Death", but he also has the Authority of Sloth and the Authority of Greed inside him. Gluttony is referring to Subaru's unique Authority. Rui Arnerb split into two so she can simultaneously experience RBD through Subaru, while also guarding the Memory Zone. Rui Arneb 1 was hiding inside Subaru to truly experience RBD, but found out that RBD's toil on mind is actually immensely traumatic. Rui Arneb 2 only has the memories of RBD and wants to experience it, but Rui Arneb 1 tries to (and fails) convince herself that it's not worth it.

rui split herself into two, and one of those went into him after eating his memories. one of them being dormant in his body allowed the other one to ocassionally take over his body (strangling meili, the writing shit on the walls). So you have one rui dormant that has been experiencing all the deaths in the passenger's seats so to speak, and one that controls his body from afar thanks to the former trying to get him to dissociate from "natsuki subaru" so they could eat him again and completely take over his life. obviously the one that actually felt the deaths doesn't want to be him anymore, and the one that is outside still wants to, so disagreement ensues. Btw, an authority is a "law of nature-defying power", in this case return by death, but there have been others (the memory eating, time stopping, invisible hand, emotion tampering and shapeshifting powers the diferent witch cult archbishops have are all authorities).

For some clarification, Gluttony split themselves to consume Subaru’s authority (that was the B&W flashback you saw when Subaru said that they’d regret eating him). The one that did it experienced all of Subaru’s experiences and thus crashed out from it. The other Gluttony that didn’t eat Subaru wanted to experience it so badly it didn’t recognize what its counterpart was going through and took it as them keeping it for itself so they fought at the end.

Just want to preface this by saying I could be way off, but I think Rui essentially got herself into an infinite loop. One Rui has Subaru's memories/authority which is what they want to obtain happiness, the other being without it is driven to want to eat the other but once she obtains it she wants nothing to do with it. The other losing the sensation of the memories/authority then repeats the process.

The Authority Rui was talking about IS Return by Death. The radar thing Subaru has is a different authority just like his Unseen Hand/Invisible Providence. In terms of exactly what Rui did. She basically split herself in two and put one of her inside Subaru and was along for the ride with Amnesia Subaru, which fucked her up, and the one left in the Hall of Memories didn't experience that so she doesn't understand the sudden change in attitude.

Sheera was cooking at the end, but yeah when amnesiac subaru was blacking out killing meili and all that it was one of the Louis Arnebs inside him all along. Her plan was to make the amnesiac subaru hate his old self, distinguishing them as two different people, so she could eat his memories again and get his authority, which is return by death. The LN goes into more detail about her backstory and why she wanted to do this to experience the perfect life, because unlike her brothers she doesn't live in the real world and never had a real life of her own. The authorities are all the different witch powers that the witches/archbishops have. Subaru already had return by death probably given to him by Satella, and he also got the Sloth authority (the purple hands) after killing Betelgeuse, and now the Greed authority (the locating souls thing) after killing Regulus.

Naw y’all about nailed it at the end. The anime passed over this part so you can read all of this. This isn’t spoilers Rui split herself and went into Subaru basically having herself and Amnesia Subaru in him at the same time, where Rui would clock in at random moments and do something horrible and passively be a rider in him, to experience death first hand as y’all concluded (his authority aka RBD). But there’s another piece Remember how Rui said they can’t eat the same person twice? That was part of why Rui would jump in at random times and killed Meili and wrote “natsuki Subaru was here”. That was part of the plan to make Subaru think the old Subaru was still inside him and create a wedge between them so Subaru wouldn’t want to be like the old one anymore and then Rui could eat him again like we saw before Rem appeared and saved him in the hall of memories. From there the only difference between the two Ruis is one experienced death through the stolen memories of Subaru. While the new Rui who appeared after Subaru regained himself, had experienced death first hand inside Subaru in live time. It ruined her and scared her to even look at him. The other Rui who wasn’t inside Subaru now wants to take those memories for herself not knowing it will literally destroy her mind but because she is gluttony she wants it and believes it’ll make her happier. It’s fucked up.

I’m a bit confused about this when thinking about the events of the episode where Rem shows up again. If new Subaru was actually Rui then why the heck did Rui show up when New Subaru tried to read Reid’s book and try to eat his new memories again? She was saying that she wanted him to deny that he’s Natsuki Subaru so she can eat him again, but why would she want to eat Rui there? Was it just because she was down to eat her right then and there like how she did at the end of this episode?

What they meant by his authority was the ability to experience death multiple times and Rui #2 having seen what happens when you talk about it tells Rui #1 to shut up. Rui #1 thinks she’s being selfish and eats Rui #2 by force to see what she’s missing out on and the gag is “We don’t want to die” when it goes black is actually Rui #1 realising she fucked up. It turns her into a different person that helps in future arcs but I won’t say much else because spoilers. Subaru will have to RBD at least once because Emilia got eaten but I’m not sure on that.

Ok to clarify: Louis Arneb split herself into 2 parts. One she kept in the library because that's how her Authority works. The second she put inside of Subaru, who became Subaru. Kind of similar to how Reid is gluttony, but different because he overpowered gluttony. In order to truly experience death, Louis Arneb literally BECAME a new Subaru. It wasn't "Pretending" to be him, it's literally a second him. So it would act just like him, and react like him. She mirrored his literal soul. All the thoughts, experiences, and memories were his. She was just sort of along for the ride so she could experience death. Only when the two fused was the part of Louis that she put in him kicked out.

No, she ate those memories. That's what she based the shell she created (NEW subaru) on. A brief (and 'creatively' localized by me) excerpt from the LN: "A person's soul is made of their memories. A collection of what came before." Sorry JP doesn't always make sense to EN speakers so I did a little localization. Basically, she made an empty shell, dumped the basics of what makes Subaru himself (his soul) into it, then hopped inside. So no, the "real" him was always in the book.

About RBD, the only time he mentioned it to someone was to Emilia in S1 and that ended up killing her. Basically it eludes to the idea that noone must know about this authority which is assumed to be the Authority of Envy. If someone knows, the Witch of Envy will kill these ppl. For example, if u remember the loop in S2 in the Sanctuary, the Witch of Envy materialized to a degree she ended up killing everyone in the village, aswell as Garfiel in front of Subaru. And when it engulfed Subaru that time, he stabbed himself with the handkerchief which turned into a dagger, thanks to Echidna during the witch party. The Witch of Envy appeared in that loop, because Subaru was able to tell Echidna about his RBD and broke down in tears, as she was the first person he managed to tell about it and not end up killing her. And now, in this season, the Witch of Envy materializes again, because it was found out that someone else besides Subaru knows about RBD. And that is most likely because of the gluttonies who ate his memories and understood he has this authority. That's also most likely why she said to not utter those words, because the Witch of Envy will appear.

I'm trying not to get into spoilers bc I'm not sure what the anime will explain, but in this episode did you notice her say that their original goal was to cause a bunch of trouble as Subaru? That was what Louis Arneb was originally going to do, but when she put the mirrored version of Subaru's soul into the shell she got WAY more than she bargained for. That's why she literally became him. Also there's only so much runtime so explaining everything is a little much sometimes XD Also bc the light novels do this thing where they use a bunch of weird ass Kanji that even a native JP speaker like me is like "Wait wtf lemme look that up I dunno what any of these words are"

Also, abit off topic, but now u've just seen that clone Rui was inside Amensia Subaru. If u remember back in episode 3, in the underground tunnel, PreAmnesia Subaru was able to make the 2 huge iron walls dissapear. In episode 9, Amensia Subaru was able to make 3 huge iron walls dissapear. This eludes to the idea that because Rui was inside Amensia Subaru at the time, her gluttony witch factor was inside Amensia Subaru aswell. Therefore, the previous 2 walls were probably opened by the fact that he has both sloth and greed witch factors. Just food for thought.

It was booted out because the "clone" was Subaru 2 at that point in time. Down to it's very soul. So naturally, it made the Subaru choice to combine memories with the Subaru WE know. Gluttony has many abilities but the chief one is the ability to move memories like a physical object. When the memories were given to old Subaru, the clone stopped being him. That's why when they cut back to the arm grab the arm was gone and Louis Arneb was there in it's place

Sadly not the best adaptation. As someone who only reads up to the show. Essentially what they are showing you here is that when Rui split herself she put that half that ate him into Subaru while he was empty to mess with him. Then once he was broken down she planned to eat him again with the part inside and steal return by death from him by latching onto it with her clone. Subaru would then truly fully die no coming back. What she didnt plan on was the clone getting all the memories back using the library and having to experience all of his HORRIBLE deaths in first person down to every sensation. The clone isnt subaru so she could not handle that at all and left him. As for what happened when she ate herself? Idk 🤷‍♂️.

Just a bit of clarification about Return by Death, whether the "penalty" actually happens is very fickle because it's Satella/WoE who decides when to stop him. So it's entirely determined on her judgement (and she's crazy half the time). So Subaru can kind of offhandedly comment on previous loops around people and they'll think he's just spouting nonsense, but if he is intentionally trying to let people know, Satella will stop him. Also damn you guys did a great job sorting out what was happening, outside of some details about the mechanics of how Rui did what she did (which weren't explained in the anime), you basically got it (though maybe I'm forgetting something lol). Rui's plan with possessing him was trying to make it so the new Subaru would separate his identity from the original "Natsuki Subaru," seeing all the terrible things that "he" was doing, which would allow her to eat him again (which she tried to do in the Rem episode), and make him completely empty (since he still had his Earth memories).

Don't forget that Subaru doesn't have just the one authority, RBD, anymore. In season 2 he learned how to use the authority of Sloth that he got from killing Petelguese.

Rui is able to duplicate her authority along with her soul and put it into people. By doing that, the copy of her soul she's created can possess them. The goal of the Rui clone that possessed Subaru three times in this arc was to make Subaru distrust himself and make him never want to regain his memories and eventually turn him into an empty husk that can be fully taken over by the Rui clone. I guess Rui didn't expect that her clone would end up taking so much psychic damage, to the point where the Rui clone separated from him in the hall of memories when Subaru regained his memories. When the Rui clone met back up the original, she felt the same anxiety that amnesia Subaru felt about reuniting with his old memories, therefore losing the new self that he'd become. The original couldn't understand why the clone wouldn't allow her to absorb her, so she thought that the memories of dying and returning must have been pleasant and the clone was hoarding those experiences for herself, leading them to fight. Idk how much this'll actually help because I don't think it's any new information, but hopefully it'll help some people who were confused.
