Lol when I first watched the series, I didn't expect shirley to be connected to the fighting but this was a pretty good twist. how lelouch's actions, no matter how many of us cheer for him, this was a grim reminder that there were consequences. and some of these consequences can hit home. only then will we realize the damage we do. not saying he should or should not have used that mud slide but this was definitely the reality check that lelouch needed in order for him to proceed on. he needed to realize his actions do cause pain, even if his goal is "just". and this is perfect moment for him to choose: whether to stop what he was doing or steel himself to continue down this path of blood he told kirihara even if it meant killing innocents.

So one thing this series has really gotten me contemplating is how fascinating the conflict between Suzaku's "work within the system" vs Lelouch's "dismantle the system from the outside by any means" is veeery reflective of real life issues. You see it with things like the BLM and corrupt governments. And I think it's fascinating that a lot of people who would cheer for Zero sticking it to an oppressive colonial government regime, would simultaneously be "Not all cops are bad". Which I think is part of why they showed us the whole Shirley's dad dying thing, because sure he was a "good guy" and "nice" to his daughter and his people but he was still part of an authoritarian military government violently subjugating a country. He was "just following orders", but if those orders are evil then can he truly be "good"? And while we feel sympathy for Shirley, I mean yeah for all we know her dad was part of the group that was killing the 11's a couple episodes ago.
