*ABILITY-ACCEPTING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

This movie I have wanted to watch for a few years now, so I was so excited to have it commissioned; definitely a nuanced take on the Rom Com with characters to love (and loathe) and adaptation aspects to talk about, with a pretty relevant premise! Frank Acevedo aka FrankAce22 has commissioned such a great movie and I have a LOT I want to talk about with it, so let's GO!

Loved the reaction and discussion! This was great motivation to finally watch a film that’s been on my to-watch list for years now. 🥰 This film is so beautifully animated and I especially loved all the deep colours. Also, the ENG dub was excellent and I would highly recommend it! I really appreciated your perspective in the discussion and you deconstructed the issues with its overall narrative (nevermind the live action version 😭) in a great way. I personally and specifically had an issue with the overall centring of Tsuneo and his development above everything else: he is the one who “discovers” Josee’s depth, in a sense, and is shown as finally understanding her “plight” through his own (temporary!) injury and rehabilitation. Ok. Great. Except that Josee should have and could have been the total and complete protagonist of this story! 😭 That is what the film should have been. Instead, this is less about Josee’s re-claiming of her autonomy than it is about Tsuneo’s professional and ethical coming of age. Now, themes of resistance?! 😆 Of course present! Mostly I love the way they are shown through Josee’s personality: her refusal to be purely “fragile,” or invisible, and the focus on her attempts to gain and retain her own creativity. And especially the imagery of the tiger! As her own fear (which she faces in the latter parts of the films) but probably also the hostility of the outside world. Those kiddos who were present for the read-along were the most adorable and so invested! 😆 Thank you to FrankAce22 for an amazing commission! 🥰 Looking forward to the next entry! 💙

Thank you so much! This film has been on my watch list for a WHILE and I’m so glad to finally be getting to it! It’s so lovely in its animation, yes! Annnnnd good to know there’s another dub watch to add to the list! 😀 The live action version just makes me grab my head, hahaha!! But yes, it was interesting from a perspective looking at the story. NOW, like you said, I do think that Tsuneo kind of has the same role as the lead of 500 Days of Summer in that he gets the “credit” as discovering Josee’s depth – I totally agree, I would have liked Josee to have been the lead and I thought that was where it was going, but then it didn’t. It definitely became Tsuneo’s story - where’s my “Midnight Sun” version of this? I would love to see a sequel of Josee being the protagonist while Tsuneo is off chasing orange fish. 😛 And yessss, themes of resistance! I love Josee’s character and how real she is and you feel her frustration – and yes, I originally thought SHE would be the representation of the tiger in the film, and she sort of is, as a fighting fire with fire with her own tenacity against the odds against her. I really loved the child portrayal in this as well; agreed! And that FrankAce22 did a great job picking this commission! Thank you so much for the comment!!
