*PROMISED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Look, I've been a Tartah fan since Day 1, but THIS week? I am stanning, I am shipping, and I am head over heels for the story and themes that are becoming more and more complex! Coco is sick and Tartah wants to help while Qifrey is called away...but can a "Non-Witch" help heal a Witch?

We did get some info on the tower the first time we were in Kahln, it’s used to protect the city from Molewyrms that live in the woods on the far bank Qifery calls it a Watchtower so it’s seemingly just used to watch out for Molewyrms in advance before they can get close

This episode definitely got me on the Tartah x Coco ship too! I can see the appeal of her with Agott but these two are just so wholesome and sweet already! Absolutely agree with you about the lack of labels! I get that it had to happen for us to get the sweet conclusion of this part of the story, but that could be so dangerous! I used to have a job where I was responsible for giving medication to people and they drilled it into us that EVERYTHING got labeled AND that you triple checked that you were giving the right medication to the right person at the right time. And even with us doing all that people still made mistakes on the rare occasion. Mistakes are definitely going to be made with a no label system! The invisible witch made me think of something. I’ve been reading the manga alongside the show, and one of the earliest chapters has a bit of extra art giving a few more details about Coco’s equipment. When it labels her hat, it mentions that witch’s hats are designed like this specifically so that witches can’t hide their face. So this guy having a brimmed cap plus being totally invisible is quite the double whammy to both that rule and the one about alternating bodies. Makes me wonder what he’s so desperate to hide, or hide from. Thanks for the video!

Was fun to hear the trust issues with the witches, the show really has a clear divide in generations, and while most of our young witches seem like they want to use magic for happiness, whether they take to being part of the elitist magic circle or not remains to be seen. I'm all for the magic for everyone camp! Interesting to hear you point out the ONLY difference between Qifrey and the people begging for his help with the fire, is that Qifrey was told the truth about magic and the others have been lied to (or deceived if you prefer) about magic. There's nothing magical about Qifrey and the other witches, in the sense which they would have everyone believe there is. Contrast this to Frieren I guess, where Frieren, Stark, Fern and all the rest of the characters follow a more traditional hero system, where the heroes are actually super-powerful and almost godlike beings, which normal people could never compare to. The way Stark can be eaten by a dragon and take no damage, or fall hundreds of feet from the sky and smash into rocks on the ground and take no damage, the way Frieren has more mana than probably the entire population of every city they pass through, things normal people could never possess. It definitely creates quite a different hierarchy between our heroes/protagonists in Witch Hat who are repressing and keeping knowledge from the ones they are saving... you can actually end up feeling slightly annoyed at the witches and sorry for the regular people being left in the dark! And why? For what reason? World peace? It really doesn't feel like that, and at what price? So many lives could be saved if magic was not kept under lock and key!

Before this episode, while I could understand why some people liked Tartah and Coco together I wasn't the biggest shipper of it, much prefering Coco and Agott. After this episode, however, I have boarded the ship and I'm ready to set sail. Goodness, these two are extremely cute, I swear. See, this episode just makes me really not understand how Tartah is inpaired in creating magic. From what I understand the issue is that he wouldn't be able to use magic dyes. Okay, that's true; however, that's also a really easy fix? Like, just put the different dyes in different vials so he can know which one is which, or tie a different length ribbon for it. It certainly doesn't seem to me an issue that would completely stop him, just something that he would need to be a bit more creative to circumvent. And it's such a shame, because Tartah is such a brilliant kid. We see it in this episode, how he and Coco deconstructed the spell to make it do what they needed to do. So, honestly, them not letting him study as an apprentice does irk me. Yeah, Qifrey is actually really selfish, isn't he? He is ready, eager to help those he cares about, to do questionable things for them, for his own goals, but he seems to need to be convinced to help others when that conflicts with his desires. It's a lot of fun, because he isn't the perfect teacher, but rather somoene that can guide as much with wise words as with things to avoid by seeing them in his own behavior, once the kids start to recognize his faults. Speaking of which, Tartah seems like he'll start seeing the truth soon enough with his curiosity about that bright light. Even if Qifrey is a terrific actor and has managed to confuse him. Honestly, though, he just needs to ask Coco about it to confirm that the light wasn't something he made up, because she was there as well; and that's the fault in Qifrey's perfect plan, because I don't think Coco will be so easily convinced that she didn't really see any flash of light that day. As for Qifrey recognizing the eye mask brim hat, I always took it as something he could do because Coco described them to him. I don't remember if it happened exactly, but I'm pretty sure in the episode that she sees them outside Nolnoa's shop she mentioned that they had an eye mask; and didn't Tartah describe them like that as well? I would need to check, I might be wrong.

I love love love the few snippets we get where we see the world how Tartah sees it. I adore Tartah as a character, I'll always be rooting for him to 'prove the system wrong' and become a great witch despite the Silverwash. Because I still maintain that the Silverwash would not hold him back as much as everyone in witch society thinks it would. It just once again brings up what Qifrey said in episode 8 - witch society is unaccommodating. And that's what is so frustrating to me about witch society, but also so neat to pick apart narratively! I do like that they have it that there were still doctors at the hospital, because it really would make NO sense if there weren't. We still let Tartah have his moment of realization that the world is still open and available to him, while gently chiding him for not checking for any adults around. That said, PLEASE START LABELING THE STUFF IN THE HOSPITAL???? Someone is going to mess up one day even if they are well-versed in medicine!!!! It's crazy that we're in the end stretch of all this!!! It's going to be torture waiting for season 2!!

Ahhh, okay, that is right! It's still very ominous, but I appreciate you bringing that back up! Thanks for that and the comment!

Yessss, Tartah is SUCH a great character and I love him so much already! I definitely am rooting for him as well! I definitely agree that the Witch Society being unaccommodating is really problematic. It’s been a lot of fun to pick apart, indeed! Yeah, I agree about the doctors and with Tartah realizing he has some accessibility in that world! But yeah, labeling things would be HELPFUL at the least! XD I’m not ready for us to be at the end of this season! At least we’ll have WHA Kitchen to keep us tuned in until then! Thank you for the comment!

Yesss, I am on the Tartah x Coco ship as well! Yes, the appeal with Agott is still there, but I’m also rooting for TarCo! 😛 Yeahhh, the lack of labels is SO dangerous! Especially in an emergency if someone is panicked and trying to figure something out very quickly. You bring up an excellent point about this! Thank you for that personal connection with your story and for the comment!

Yessss, I love the possibility of the younger generation and if they would join the Witch Society or pursue their own way and what that perhaps says about the current generation, maybe? I’m currently team “Magic for everyone” but of course, it’s layered and complicated – I just keep waiting to see if we see a “corrupted” pointed hat witch and THEN I’ll basically be a Brimmed Cap, hahaha!! And wow, that is a great comparison to Frieren and her “entourage.” There is a similar “vibe” and mood, but this series puts things in a different perspective with the systems in place in the worldbuilding. I agree with you! So many questions with the Witch Society and I cannot wait to see where the story takes us with that! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

I’m currently straddling both ships, one foot with Tartah, one foot with Agott, and Coco in the middle with me! Hahaha! They were so cute this episode, though, I agree! I feel that this episode proves that despite the Witch Society putting an immediate stop to anyone with a potential accommodation from being a full-fledged Witch, Tartah shows through his prowess and ingenuity that he can be just as comparable as a “regular” witch. I’m with you; not letting him participate and be an apprentice is annoying and irks me as well. Ohhh yes, Qifrey is selfish - I like that he’s not perfect and is flawed, but it is a bit scary when you realize that he’s willing to do WHATEVER means are necessary to either protect those he cares about or get what he wants – it’s just a matter of which takes precedence in the moment. I am surprised Coco wasn’t asked about the light, but she was sick this episode, so maybe Tartah just didn’t want to bother her more, but yeah, Tartah is smart – I think it’s only a matter of time until he realizes something is up. And yes, I think I noted that about Qifrey recognizing the Eye Mask either in the discussion for this week or the intro for episode 11. Thank you so much for the comment!!
